Velma L. Read
Velma L. Read, 74, a longtime Salida resident, died March 4, 2004, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Read was born July 22, 1929, in Center, to James and Pearl (Whited) Pannell.
She grew up in the San Luis Valley.
Mrs. Read married Stanley D. Read on May 22, 1949, in Ouray.
She graduated from Western State College in 1951.
While living in Gunnison, she assisted her husband, Stanley, as a rural route mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.
Mrs. Read had a great love for animals, cooking, hiking and jeeping in the mountains.
Mrs. Read also had a great sense of humor and always greeted someone with a smile.
She is survived by her daughters, Lisa (Marcus) Davis, Colorado Springs and Leanne P. Read, Salida; brothers, James Pannell, Durango and Norman Pannell, Casa Grande, Ariz.; sister, Zelda Slater, Marthaville, La. and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Stanley D. Read and brother, Frank Pannell.

Hollis D. Heister
Hollis D. Heister, 78, died Feb. 29, 2004, at his home in Salida.
He was born Dec. 13, 1925, in Salida, to Hollis Glenn and Iverne F. (Haus) Heister.
Mr. Heister married Opal Thompson Feb. 14, 1948, in Cañon City.
He served in the Army during World War II.
He worked for the Salida post office for 35 years, was a member of the American Legion and loved to fish and be in the outdoors.
Mr. Heister was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Lynn Bell.
He is survived by his wife, Opal Heister, Salida; son, Dean (Katherine) Heister, The Woodlands, Texas; sisters, Arlen (Calvin) Carothers and Readon Magnuson of Salida; sister-in-law, Ruth Lankford, Cañon City; brother-in-law, Roy Thompson, Salida; granddaughter, Jenny Heister, The Woodlands, Texas and Charles Bell, Cañon City and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services are set for 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church.
Arrangements are with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Hollis Duane Heister
A memorial service for Hollis Duane Heister was held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church.
Rev. Mike Orrill officiated. The musicians were Frank Lanaghen and Rev. Mike Orrill.
Honorary pallbearers were Chuck Jay, Scott Ashley, Dan Ashley, Paul Nelson, Kedric Smith, Jim Nance, Brad Sherman and Lynn Stotler.
At the church, members of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars held their flag presentation ceremonies.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Parkinson’s Disease Association through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Viva Elaine Garritson
A memorial service for Viva Elaine Garritson was held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Rev. Rick Casteel officiated.
Laura Hendrie of Angel of Shavano Hospice was asked by the Garritson family to read family memories. Katie Garritson read two poems.
The Four Fathers Quartet sang “Amazing Grace” and “God Is Love.”

Margaret L. Covey
A memorial service for Margaret L. Covey was held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Living Waters Assembly of God Church. Rev. Ed Soules officiated.
The organist was Lois Soules and the vocalist was Susan Machado.
The musical selections were “How Great Thou Art” and “In The Garden.”
Memories were shared by those in attendance.

Gabrielle Chick
Gabrielle Chick, 92 of Salida, died March 6, 2004, at her home.
She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., to Frank and Tan-Tan Hopkinson-Evans Oct. 24, 1911.
She was schooled in England, France and Pennsylvania. She graduated from Bryn Mawr Finishing School.
With all her refined education she moved to the West and became “thoroughly Western.” Salida became the end of her western journey and she enjoyed its wonderful beauty and the relaxed and friendly culture.
She is survived by her dog, Nikki; daughters, Barbara Chick, Daphne Chick and Bonnie Spurr and son, Richard Chick.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Ascension Episcopal Church. A reception will follow at her home at 22B Silver Spruce Dr., Salida.
Her children welcome all her friends to come and share in the celebration of her life.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Neighbor-to-Neighbor Volunteer Center, 205 E. Third St., Salida, CO 81201. All contributions will be given to local charities.

Zelma Mae Gordon
Zelma Mae Gordon, 89, died March 5, 2004, at Desert View Manor, Crane, Texas.
She was born Jan. 19, 1915, in Fairfield, Neb., to Jessee and Osa Moore.
She married Hy Gordon Nov. 21, 1933, in Sterling.
Mrs. Gordon was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers; two sisters; daughter, Joyce Kostelc and granddaughters, Roxan Palmer, Salida and Lori Haanstad, Kansas City, Mo.
She is survived by daughters, Barbara (Pete) Reynolds, Salida and Ann (Newt) Williams, Crane, Texas; sons, Waldo (Marge) Gordon, Castle Rock and Forrest Gordon, Lakewood; 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Friday at the First Baptist Church, Crane, Texas.
Karmen Joyce ‘Joy’ Rose
Karmen Joyce “Joy” Rose, 61, Salida, died March 7, 2004, at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
She was born Aug. 13, 1942, in New Castle, to Carmen and Margaret (Blue) Manuppella. She grew up in Rifle.
Joy married Melvin Rose on Nov. 13, 1962, in Rifle.
Her interests included reading, walking and whale watching in Hawaii.
Joy is survived by her husband, Melvin Rose, Salida; daughters, Shanna (Bryan) Clark, Monument; Kaveen Rose, Salida and Dodie (Dan) Ferrante, Colorado Springs; brother, Bill Manuppella, Arvada and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A gathering of family and friends in remembrance of Joy will take place from 1-5 p.m. Friday at the Rose residence, 1303 G St., Salida.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Angelview Therapeutic Center or to Angel of Shavano Hospice through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Edith G. Logan
Edith G. Logan, 88, Nathrop, died Jan. 26, 2004, at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Logan was born July 17, 1915, in Bridgeport, Conn., to George and Lulu Belle (Brookman) Godburn.
She was an avid reader and a master bridge player.
Mrs. Logan is survived by her sons, Kurt (Carol) Logan, Nathrop and Brian Logan, Washington, D.C.; granddaughter, Bronwyn (Duston) Woodward, Colorado Springs and great-grandchildren, Amber and Tyler Woodward, both of Colorado Springs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Logan.
There are no services planned at this time.
