Frank ‘Wat’ Watson Burnham Jr.
Frank “Wat” Watson Burnham Jr., 100, of Bloomfield, Conn., husband of the late Hazel (Smith) Burnham, died March 18, 2004, at a local convalescent home.
Born in Bloomfield, son of the late Frank Watson and Isabel (Miller) Burnham, he lived in Bloomfield for many years and moved to Buena Vista, in 1949, returning to Bloomfield in 2000.
Mr. Burnham started Burnham’s Garage in Bloomfield and owned the business for 55 years. During his time in Colorado, he worked for a power company.
A longtime resident of Bloomfield, he served as Fire Chief for the Bloomfield Volunteer Fire Department for many years and was a member of Hiram Lodge No. 98, A.F.&A.M. Mr. Burnham was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed spending time outdoors.
He leaves a son, Robert W. Burnham and his wife Earldine of Bloomfield; a daughter, Margaret B. Merski of Hartford, Conn.; a brother, Thomas R. Burnham of Bloomfield; a sister, Alice B. Ellsworth of Canton; seven grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and a great great granddaughter.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a son, Dwight A. Burnham; two brothers, Kenneth Burnham and Dwight Burnham and two sisters, Myrtle B. Curtis and Ruth Stewart.
Funeral services will be announced at a later date.

Margaret A. Frankenbery
Margaret A. Frankenbery, 91, formerly of Salida, died March 14, 2004.
She was born Jan. 27, 1913, in Salida.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Armyn Jay Frankenbery.
Survivors include son, A.E. “Rocky” (Pat) Frankenbery; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Frankenbery retired from the Denver Public School System after 33 years.
She was a charter member of Foothills Christian Church, a member of the Colorado Association of Educational Secretaries, Denver Association of Educational Office Personnel, Beta Phi, OES Friendship Chapter, Denver Senior Citizens Inc. board of trustees, Order of the DeMolay State Chaplain, recipient of Outstanding Volunteer for RSVP, Exceptional Volunteer for Denver Chapter of the American Red Cross, Honored Volunteer of Jefferson County Social Services Volunteer Connection, Citizen of the Year by International Civitan Club, and Mother of Mountair Christian Church, Lakewood.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Olinger Crown Hill Mortuary and Cemetery, Wheat Ridge.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of personal choice.
Richard Fredrick Stone
Richard Fredrick Stone, 69, Braddyville, Iowa, died Feb. 14, 2004, at Westridge Care and Rehab Center, Clarinda, Iowa, where he had resided for five days.
Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 p.m., Thursday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with Rev. Bob Thompson officiating. Burial will be in Shearer Cemetery, Braddyville, Iowa. A memorial will be established.
Mr. Stone was born May 20, 1934, in Omaha, Neb., to Horace Stone and Thelma (Wolf) Stone.
He was a graduate of Clarinda High School.
He served in the Army during the Korean War.
Mr. Stone married Donna Mingus in 1963 and she preceded him in death in 2000.
He was a truck driver and mechanic for Midwest Viking Trucking Co.
Mr. Stone enjoyed working on cars and old tractors.
Preceding him in death were his parents and brothers, Tarol Stone and Danny in infancy.
Survivors include his children, Daniel F. Stone, Shambaugh, Iowa; Christine Nicholson and husband, Bill, Nodaway, Iowa; John D. Stone, Rockwell City, Iowa and Tamara Brown and husband, Doug, Corning, Iowa; grandchildren, Candice Nicholson, Derek Nicholson, Lucas Nicholson, Carly Nicholson and David Allen Stone and sister, LaDonna Stone, Braddyville, Iowa.
Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
Velma Hixenbaugh
Velma Hixenbaugh died Feb. 16, 2004.
She was born in Memphis, Mo., on May 9, 1904.
Mrs. Hixenbaugh began teaching in a country school at the age of 17.
After her family moved to Cheyenne, Wyo. in 1922, she was able to graduate from high school and attend the teacher’s college in Greeley. She taught in rural schools for many years, was a gifted teacher and had a lifelong love of working with children.
In 1926 she married Carl Hixenbaugh. In 1929 the couple moved to Salem, Ore., and later to San Francisco, Calif.
They both graduated from Glad Tidings Bible Institute and were ordained as ministers of the Assemblies of God Church. They pastored churches in Gillette, Wyo. and in Calhan.
The Hixenbaughs accepted a missionary appointment to Africa in 1941. In Liberia they lived in jungle country, where they taught in English language schools and worked at the health clinic, in addition to their ministry.
Although they had no children of their own, they raised a number of orphaned African children.
The couple worked together in Africa for 14 years. After the death of her husband in 1955, Mrs. Hixenbaugh returned to Liberia for another 16 years. Mrs. Hixenbaugh served as instructor and principal of the Bible school, training young men to pastor their own native churches.
After 30 years of missionary service, she retired in 1971, living in Cheyenne, Wyo., where she continued to be active in church and community life, volunteering in local senior programs and conducting a Bible study class at the Burke center, where she lived.
In May 2000 she moved to Columbine Manor to be closer to her nephew and family.
Survivors include her closest relatives, nephew, Bill (Edie) Einspahr, Buena Vista; sister-in-law, Katherine Hixenbaugh, Cheyenne, Wyo.; Ken and Diane Hixenbaugh, Cheyenne, Wyo. and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Hixenbaugh was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Hixenbaugh; parents, Ed and Sadie Farley; brothers, Gale, Wayne and Glen and sisters, Opal and Edith.
Services are set for 2 p.m. Monday in Cheyenne, Wyo.
William R. Graves Sr.
William R. Graves Sr., 47, Salida, died Feb. 10, 2004, at St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver.
He died of complications from a fall sustained Feb. 5, 2004.
He is survived by his wife, Debra L. Wood-Graves, Salida; son, William R. Graves, Jr.; parents, Charles and Virginia Bird, Commerce City; brothers, Robert Graves, Del Norte; Larry Graves, Terry Taylor and Jimmy Block and sister, Brenda Bird, all of Commerce City and numerous nieces and nephews, including a very special nephew, Ryver Don Kallstrom, Salida.
He is also survived by very special friends, Jan Nay, Annette Woener and Mary and Ed Lopez, all of Salida, who are like family members to him.
Mr. Graves enjoyed camping, rodeoing and being a CNA for Alzheimer’s.
He also enjoyed taking trips to Arkansas to see his Grandma Bird.
He served his country during the Viet Nam War.
A memorial fund has been established at Pueblo Bank and Trust in Salida in the name of Debra L. Wood to help defray burial costs.
Services will be held at a later date.
William R. Graves Sr.
Viewing for William R. Graves Sr., 47, Salida, who died Feb. 10, 2004, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Bear Valley Christian Church, 6800 W. Hampden, Denver.
A graveside service will be held at noon Friday at Fort Logan Cemetery, Denver.
A memorial fund has been established at Pueblo Bank and Trust in Salida in the name of Debra L. Wood to help defray burial costs.
John Elvis Burch
John Elvis Burch, 94, a longtime rancher in Salida, died Feb. 18, 2004, at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 17, 1910, in Castro County, Texas, to George and Stella (Turner) Burch.
Mr. Burch, along with his father, owned and operated a ranch in the panhandle of Texas for many years. They were well known for their showing of registered Hereford cattle in Texas.
Mr. Burch moved to Salida in 1962 and ranched here until 1975. From 1975-1983 he was employed at Hughes Oil and Implement.
He was a member and a lifetime Deacon of Temple Baptist Church. He held several positions with the Continental Divide Baptist Association.
Mr. Burch enjoyed traveling in his motor home during his retirement.
He is survived by a brother, George Aubrey Burch, Edmonds, Wash.; grandson, Bill Burch of California; granddaughter, Brittany Burch, St. Louis, Mo.; daughter-in-law, Diane Savard of California; step-daughter, Betsy Lewis of Salida; many nieces and nephews and numerous close friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jennie of 54 years and wife, Vivian and a son, Jess Burch.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Temple Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Temple Baptist Church Memorial Fund.
Arrangements are with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
John Elvis Burch
Funeral services for John Elvis Burch were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Temple Baptist Church. Rev. C. Ray Adkins and Rev. Richard Adams officiated.
Tommie Hughes was the pianist, Brenda Heckel was the vocalist and Walt Harder was the guitarist.
Musical selections were “How Great Thou Art” and “It Is Well With My Soul.”
Pallbearers were Larry Hughes, Britt Hughes, Leonard Post, Jeff Post, Bruce Thomas and John Scanga.
Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery.
Arrangements were with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
