Anna M. Ogden

Anna M. Ogden, 26, formerly of Salida, died Feb. 1, 2004, in Pensacola, Fla.

Ms. Ogden was born Aug. 18, 1977, in Salida to Clayton and Debra (Mason) Ogden.

She is survived by her father, Clayton Ogden, Buena Vista; mother, Debra Thorpe, Salida; son, Isaiah Waite, Salida; brother, Clay (Kasey) Ogden, Salida; sister, Christina Ogden, Salida; grandparents, Emma Ogden, Salida and Don and Margaret Mason, Florence and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Joyce Goldenberg Hospice Inpatient Residence or to the Angel of Shavano Hospice through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

James E. Epp

James E. Epp, 84, Salida, died Jan. 8, 2004, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home.

He was born Oct. 22, 1919, in Kansas City, Kan., to Henry Martin and Ida Mae (Schnell) Epp.

Mr. Epp graduated from Kemper Military School and attended Kansas City Kansas Junior College until 1939.

He worked for the Rock Island Railroad as a switchman from 1940-41 before enlisting in the Army where he served in the Aleutian Islands Campaign.

Mr. Epp received a Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, one Bronze Service Star and an American Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and returned to the Rock Island Railroad until his retirement in 1970.

He married Evelyn Faye Rogers July 22, 1945, in Cheyenne, Wyo.

In 1970 the Epps purchased Monarch Motor Lodge in Salida and operated the business until their retirement in 1981.

Mr. Epp was a life member of the Sertoma Club and in 1986 was Sertoman of the year. He served on the board of directors for the Salida Chamber of Commerce.

His Masonic affiliations include Salida Lodge No. 57, A.F. & A.M. (Past Master, 1985); Salida Chapter No. 17, Royal Arch Masons (Past High Priest, 1984-85); Salida Council No. 20, Cryptic Masons (Past Illustrious Master, 1982-83); Salida Commandery No. 17, Knights Templar (Past Commander, 1983); Salida Mon-Ark Shrine Club (Past President, 1989) and Al Kaly Shrine, Pueblo.

He enjoyed fishing, 4-wheeling, traveling and spending time with his family.

Mr. Epp is survived by his wife, Evelyn Epp, Salida; son, John Martin (Linda) Epp, Salida; daughter, Jean (Mick) McCormac, Swissvale; grandchildren, Justin (Kristy) Watts, Howard; Brennon (Jennie) Watts, Pueblo West; Derek McCormac, Pueblo; Corinne Stasco, Boulder and Madison Cassels, Salida; great-grandchildren, Kaylee Watts and Brady Watts, both of Pueblo.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1-4 p.m. today at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners’ Children’s Hospital through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

James E. Epp

Funeral services for James E. Epp were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Rev. Rick Casteel officiated. Georgianna Smith was organist and Brenda Heckel was soloist.

The musical selections were “Ivory Palaces” and “Old Rugged Cross.”

Pallbearers were Justin Watts, Brennon Watts, Derek McCormac, Bob McCormick, Dave Ingraham and Dave Salberg.

Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery. At the cemetery, Masonic Lodge members held their service and members of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars held their flag presentation ceremonies.

Arrangements were with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Pearl Christine Adamich

Pearl Christine Adamich, 78, Front Royal, Va., formerly of Salida, died Jan. 8, 2004, at Royal Haven Rest Home in Front Royal.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Adamich was born May 22, 1925, in Salida, daughter of the late Frank and Lena Paquette Lindquist.

She retired as a nurse’s aide and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salida. She was married to the late Louis Adamich.

Surviving are son, Louis Adamich, Burke, Va.; daughter, Mary Harris, Alexandria, Va.; sister, Barbara Jackson, Deerlodge, Mont.; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are by Maddox Funeral Home in Front Royal, Va.

Kenneth L. Kerrigan

Kenneth L. Kerrigan, 71, Howard, died Jan. 11, 2004, at his home.

He was born July 27, 1932, in Victor, to Edward L. and Rose (Thompson) Kerrigan.

Mr. Kerrigan was a lifelong resident of Howard and a veteran of the Army.

He had many friends and affiliations in the local construction field.

Mr. Kerrigan was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Shirley (Failing) Kerrigan; sons, Gary (Rose) Kerrigan, Ohio; Ken (Anita) Kerrigan, Howard; Eric (Genny) Kerrigan, Howard and Kendell (Carol) Kerrigan, Howard; daughter, Roxanne Nickerson, Salida; brothers, Ed (Mary) Kerrigan, Cañon City and Doug (Caroline) Kerrigan, Cañon City; sister, Betty (Sid) Proctor, North Carolina and numerous grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Kenneth L. Kerrigan

A memorial service for Kenneth L. Kerrigan was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Rev. Rick Casteel officiated. Eric Kerrigan shared memories of his father.

Members of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars held their flag presentation ceremonies at the chapel.

Arrangements were with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Gladys Heister Parke

Salida native Gladys Heister Parke, 85, died Jan. 7, 2004, in Corvallis, Ore.

She was born March 2, 1918, in Salida, in a log cabin built by her father, Gil Heister, on Oak Street. He was a cowboy, hunter and contractor who settled in Colorado in 1881.

Her mother, Lena Purdom Heister, died when Gladys was 3 years old, and Gil devoted himself to raising their seven children: Hollis, Clyde, Dolores, Cleo, Elwood, Bunny and Gladys, the youngest.

The seven children, beginning with Hollis, born in 1900, were all raised in Salida and played a part in Salida’s history through the 1900s. Many of their offspring live in the Salida area. Family members still live in the Oak Street log cabin, now covered with brick, and the original Gil Heister homestead, east of Salida, remains in the family.

Mrs. Parke graduated from Salida High School in 1936.

She was a member of the Twiddle Twaddle Twelve, a group of 12 girls who sponsored high school social functions and have remained friends through the years.

After high school, she worked as society editor at the Salida Mountain Mail and as an usherette at the movie theater.

She entered nursing school in Pueblo, graduating in 1940. While working at Denver General Hospital, she fell in love with a young doctor, Fred Parke, whom she married Dec. 31, 1941.

Together they raised five children as they moved to Rochester, Minn., Longview, Wash. and San Bernardino, Calif. They retired to Escondido, Calif. in 1985.

Gladys and Fred spent 53 years together until his death in 1995. She moved to Corvallis in 1998.

Wherever Mrs. Parke lived, she was involved in community organizations including PTA, the Women’s Medical Auxiliary, YMCA, World Affairs Council, church groups and charities.

She was an avid gardener, a rescuer of injured wildlife and world traveler.

Mrs. Parke is survived by her children, Bonny Parke and Pam Parke of Palo Alto, Calif.; David Parke of San Bernardino, Calif.; Jennifer Parke of Corvallis, Ore. and Jesse Parke of Clatskanie, Ore. and nine grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Fairview Cemetery.

A celebration of her life will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Corvallis, Ore.

Her niece, Jackie Gann of Salida, is assisting with local arrangements.

Arrangements are with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Gladys Parke

Graveside funeral services for Gladys Parke were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Fairview Cemetery.

The service was conducted by Ken Brandon, Andrew Lemmon and Jackie Gann.

The taped musical selections were “Nearer My God To Thee” and “God Be With You Till We Meet Again.”

Jackie Gann read a poem and a recorded poem was played that was read by Gil Heister.

Memories were shared by those in attendance.

Pallbearers were Jess Parke, Rick Gann, Ken Brandon, Andrew Lemmon, Jeff Graf and Randy Amettis.

Arrangements were with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Walter D. Broom

Senior Master Sgt. Walter D. Broom, United States Air Force (Ret.) of Dauphin Island, Ala., formerly of Salida, died Jan. 3, 2004.

He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Marla L. Broom; her son and daughter with her family and also, two sisters and their families.

He was born in Emerson, Ark. in 1930.

He served more than 25 years in the Air Force becoming a superintendent of dental services.

After his service retirement, he worked with the departments of corrections in Colorado and Louisiana, attaining the rank of captain.

He and his wife have been residents of Dauphin Island, Ala. for 8 years.

He enjoyed deep-sea fishing and holds the current record in the Conde Cavalier Fishing Rodeo for the Spanish mackerel he caught in 1998, which weighed 7.3 pounds.

An open house to celebrate his life was held Jan. 7 at their home on Dauphin Island.
