Vera Margaret West
Vera Margaret West, 77, Poncha Springs, died Oct. 28, 2003, at her residence.
Mrs. West was born Oct. 19, 1926, in Beggs, Okla., to Charles and Maude (Mercer) Gonseth.
She married Charles West April 8, 1946, in Wichita, Kan.
Mrs. West was a resident of the Salida area since 1961.
She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary.
Mrs. West is survived by her daughter, Beverly Ann (Louie) Fish, Poncha Springs; sisters, Pearl Dowland, Beggs, Okla.; Gladys Culbert, Beggs, Okla. and Hazel Laffoon, Tulsa, Okla.; grandchildren, Ralph C. (Ricki) Fish, Poncha Springs and Louie F. (Flor) Fish Jr., Land O’ Lakes, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Ralph Fish Jr., Poncha Springs; Kristina Fish, Poncha Springs; Erika and Janet Fish, Land O’ Lakes, Fla. and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles West; brother, Clarence Gonseth and sisters, Violet Gonseth and Opal Gentry.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Angel of Shavano Hospice through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Nora Elizabeth Arevalo
Nora Elizabeth Arevalo died Oct. 24, 2003, at her home in Vancouver, Wash., after a long illness.
She lived with her daughter, Frances Robinette, who cared for her the last several years of her life.
She was born Sept. 25, 1915, in Arizona to William F. Owens and Belle Owens.
Ms. Arevalo was of the Catholic faith. She was an honorary member of the Monarch Quilters and was a seamstress.
Survivors include son, William L. Pruitt (Marlene), Crestone; daughter, Frances Robinette (William), Vancouver; stepmother, Mary E. Owens, Salida; sister, Mary A. Moore (Jim), Villa Grove; grandchildren, Cindy, Dorinda, Holly and Frankie and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Minnie; ex-husband, Frank Arevalo and niece, Barscha Richey.
Cremation was chosen and her ashes will rest in Villa Grove Cemetery.
Elmer Richard Fowler
Elmer Richard Fowler, 89, Salida, died Nov. 9, 2003, at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Fowler was born on Jan. 29, 1914, in Lamar, to Harvey and Laura Bell (Amrine) Fowler.
He has been a resident of Salida since 1957 and a resident of Chaffee County most of his life.
Mr. Fowler married Florence Marie Webb Jan. 29, 1941, in Kansas.
He served from 1942-45 during World War II and earned the Bronze Star and Good Conduct Medal while serving in North Africa and Europe.
Mr. Fowler was a heavy equipment operator most of his life and retired in 1977. He was instrumental in the development of the county including the airport, fairgrounds and forest service access roads.
He was involved in building Sky Valley Ranch and numerous log homes in the area.
Mr. Fowler was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars for more than 40 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, carpentry, four-wheeling and traveling.
Mr. Fowler was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Chester Fowler and sisters, Crystal Rabben and Rosemary Fowler.
He is survived by his wife, Florence Fowler, Salida; sons, Richard Fowler, Ouray; Leonard (Anna Lee) Fowler, Loveland; Jim Fowler, Salida; Marty Fowler, Denver and Harry (Sue) Fowler, Loveland; daughters, Marie (Larry) LaVassauer, Southgate, Mich.; Maurine Irwin, Salida and Linda (Rick) Martinez, Loveland; brothers, Clarence (Bonnie) Fowler, Salida; George (Mary) Fowler, Craig; Don (Mary) Fowler, Pueblo and Kenneth (Nola) Fowler, Pueblo; sisters, Ellen Hoffman, Denver; Agnes Gingery, Kalispell, Mont.; Ada Bell Manpel, Grand Junction and Margaret Nolan, Littleton; sister-in-law, Donna Fowler, Poncha Springs; 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to noon today at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home. Services are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Friends who desire may make memorial contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association through the funeral home.

Richard E. ‘Dick’ Werner
Richard E. “Dick” Werner died Nov. 8, 2003, in the Hospice of St. John in Denver, from brain cancer.
He was born to Talt and Viola Werner Jan. 9, 1928, in Saguache County.
Mr. Werner was a water well driller and excavating contractor in the Buena Vista and Fairplay area for more than 30 years.
He served in the Army in Korea from 1950-52.
Mr. Werner is survived by his wife of 49 years, Pat; children, Alicia Werner, Fort Collins; Kevin Werner, Centerville, Mass. and Peter Werner, Fairplay; grandchildren, Dustin Boyer, Kristin Werner, Curtis Werner, Will Werner, Hanna Werner and Graham Werner; sisters, Elizabeth Hazard, Saguache and Elvira Telinde, Monte Vista; brother, Jack Werner of Farmington, N.M.; nephew, John Werner, Moffat and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Charles and Edward Werner and Loyal Morgan and sister, Easter Dickinson.
Mr. Werner will be buried Wednesday in Buena Vista.
It is the wish of Mr. Werner’s family that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of St. John, 1320 Everett Court, Lakewood, CO 80215.
Wayne Gilleland
Wayne Gilleland, 57, died Nov.13, 2003, in Beverly Hills, Calif. He was born Jan. 5, 1946, in Norfolk, Va.
He is survived by his mother, Marjorie D. Gilleland, father John E. Gilleland, sister, Jane Newman and her husband, Ron Newman, all of Nathrop; his children, Leabeth Gilleland, of Mankato, Minn.; Carly Gilleland, Haysen Gilleland and Zak Gilleland, all of Chapel Hill, N. C.; grandson Gabe Gilleland of Mankato, Minn., and niece, Ashley Mosely, Little Rock, Ark.
Mr. Gilleland was a 1963 graduate of Hall High School in Little Rock, Ark., and a 1967 graduate of Hendrix College in Conway, Ark.
He served in the Air Force assigned to Clark Air Force Base in the Philippine Islands and later as a radio communications technician for Air Force I. He was honorably discharged in 1972.
Mr. Gilleland moved to Monticello, Ark. where he opened Mr. G Men’s Clothing Store. He operated the store until 1985 when he entered the investment business in Little Rock, with E.F. Hutton Co.
He worked in other states in the investment business and was living in Beverly Hills when he died.
Mr. Gilleland was a member of Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church and was a leader in Boy Scout Troop 12. As a Boy Scout, he was an Eagle Scout and received the “God and Country Award.”
He was an avid golfer and sports fan and was active in coaching his children in sports activities. Gilleland cherished the time he spent with his children and grandson.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church, Little Rock, Ark., followed by a reception at the church.

Della M. (Rendon) Coscarella
Mrs. Della M. (Rendon) Coscarella, a native of Salida, died at Columbine Manor Care Center Nov. 15, 2003.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Coscarella; son, Eddie and daughter, Molly.
Survivors include her brothers, Bibian Rendon and Manuel Rendon and their families of Salt Lake City, Utah; son, James, and daughter, Alice, of Salida; son-in-law, Bob Diggins, Salt Lake City and numerous grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Memorial Estates in Salt Lake City.
Local arrangements were handled by Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Eva L. Kelley Epperson
Eva L. Kelley Epperson, 82, Howard, died Nov. 15, 2003, in Denver.
She was born Sept. 5, 1921, in Sapulpa, Okla., a daughter of the late James and Ruth (Osborne) Eldredge.
Mrs. Epperson was a homemaker and mother. She loved to read, garden and crochet and enjoyed making afghans as Christmas presents for her family.
Survivors include her husband, Olan H. Epperson, of the family home; children, Patrick Kelley of Howard, Karen (Jim) Foster of Howard, Michael (Rebecca) Kelley of Iron Mountain, Jim Epperson of Howard and Janelle (Jim) Wiley, Port Orchard, Wash.; grandchildren, Jeff Harris, Sean Kelley, Erin Kelley, Brennan Kelley, Jolene Ervin, Myra (Jeremey) Foster Smith, Johnna (Maury) Miller and Jim (Chelsea) Goodwin and great-grandchildren, Madison and Ryan Smith, Keldyn Miller, Dustin Harris, Ryanne and Brandon Ervin, Willow Mize and Bradley and Gavin Kelley.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lewis Kelley in 1975; two sisters and three brothers.
Visitation will be from 2-7 p.m. today at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home in Salida. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home Chapel and interment will follow at Howard Cemetery, Howard.
Arrangements are through Holt Family Funeral Home, Cañon City.
Michael J. Bogert
Michael J. Bogert, 47, Salida, died Nov. 14, 2003, in Penrose Hospital.
He moved to Salida in 1997 to be in the mountains to be close to fishing and camping, which he loved.
Mr. Bogert was preceded in death by his parents, Bob Bogert and Evelyn Lowe.
He is survived by a sister, Patty Apple, Thornton; step-brothers, William R. Graves Sr., Salida; Robert L. Graves Sr., Del Norte; Larry D. Graves Sr., Pagosa Springs; Jim Block, Commerce City and Terry Taylor, Pagosa Springs; stepsister, Brenda Bird, Denver and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Bogert was cremated and a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 6 at 622 Vine St., Salida.
