Maxcine Ruth McDowell
Maxcine Ruth McDowell, 94, died June 19, 2003, at Columbine Manor where she lived for about a year.
She was born Nov. 27, 1908, in La Junta to John and Myrtie (McCollum) Jewell, as the fifth of seven children.
The family moved to Delta, where she graduated from high school. She attended Western State College and graduated with a degree in teaching in 1928.
She taught for two years in Ouray, for one year in Crawford and for six years in Cedaredge, before marrying Theodore I. McDowell June 29, 1938, in a double ceremony with her sister, Genevieve.
After a honeymoon at Niagara Falls, N.Y., they packed all their belongings onto a D&RGW train and moved them over Marshall Pass to Salida. In 1946, their only child, Marcia Mae, was born. The family lived in Salida since 1938.
Mrs. McDowell taught fifth grade at Longfellow Elementary School for 11 years where she was loved by her students. She loved her students and especially loved teaching music and to sing harmony. She finished her teaching career by teaching one year in Vona, at the age of 73.
She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a sewing club, and Salida First Baptist Church. She was active in her church, teaching Sunday School, playing the piano and serving on various committees and boards.
Her greatest expertise and love was being a homemaker. She was a fantastic cook and loved to have guests in her home.
Mrs. McDowell was preceded in death by her parents; all of her brothers and sisters; her husband and her grandson, Tim Vance.
She is survived by her daughter, Marcia (Harold) Vance, Salida; grandson, John (Amy) Vance, Lakewood; great-grandson, Luke Vance and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1-4 p.m. today at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Salida. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery.

Maxcine Ruth McDowell: funeral notice
Funeral services for Maxcine Ruth McDowell were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Salida.
Pastor Harold Vance officiated. The pianist was LaDonna Abbadusky and soloists were John and Amy Vance, Charles and Carol LaRue and Russ and Lynn Purcell.
Musical selections were “The Old Rugged Cross,” “I Believe In A Hill Called Mt. Calvary” and “Cornerstone.”
Pallbearers were Dick Murphy, Ron Anderson, John Vance, Ron Stowell, Paul Vance and Jim Minor.
Honorary pallbearers were Herb Cole and Don Coffey.
Interment was in Fairview Cemetery.
Arrangements were with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Harry Cullen Auld
Harry Cullen Auld died June 18, 2003.
Mr. Auld was born Dec. 22, 1905, in a small town in southern Illinois.
He spent his adult life as an aircraft mechanic in the Air Force. He was one of the fortunate people who love their work so much, it seemed like playing.
After 30 years he retired in Arcola, Ill., where he was active with his church.
Mr. Auld moved to Colorado after his wife, Mary, died in 1994.
He kept active with his hobby of beading angels and was proud that his angels went all over the world.
Mr. Auld is survived by his son, Harry (Jo Ann), Howard; granddaughters, Kathy Prewett (Larry) and Kimberly Miner (Tim) and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran Church in Salida.
Harry Clyde Walker Jr.
Harry Clyde Walker, Jr., 81, Buena Vista, died May 13, 2003, in his home in Buena Vista, among family members.
Mr. Walker was born Nov. 21, 1921, in Ulysses, Kan., to Harrison (Harry) Walker and Anna Myrtle Josanna Jarvis.
He grew up in Grant County, Kan., where he graduated from the Ulysses school system and attended Garden City Junior College.
Mr. Walker married his high school sweetheart, E. Virginia Hampton, Aug. 5, 1945. They began their family and enjoyed many productive years working in agriculture.
Retaining their farmland in Kansas, the Walker family moved to Coaldale in 1961, where they bought a ranch on Cottonwood Creek. As his family grew, Mr. Walker worked for Ryan & Sons Construction Co. at Climax Mine, Leadville.
After neck and back surgeries, he devoted many years to the development and management of Hidden Valley & Campground, Coaldale.
Mr. and Mrs. Walker returned to Ulysses, Kan. in 1985 after selling their home and business to pursue family and farming interests. He returned to Colorado in 1995, after Mrs. Walker’s death, living in Buena Vista his remaining years.
In Buena Vista, he enjoyed special luncheon friends at Jan’s Restaurant and frequent visits to Cripple Creek casinos with his friends.
Mr. Walker loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, farming and ranching; but above all else, spending time with his family.
He was a member and former deacon of the First Baptist Church in Ulysses, Kan. He was a 4-H leader in Kansas and Coaldale.
Mr. Walker is survived by son, Terry P. Walker, Manhattan, Kan.; daughter, Marcia L. Walker, Montrose; son, Mark (Charlotte) Walker, Fairplay; daughters, Tonya (James L.) Heiny, Montrose; Beth L. (Roger) Short, Torrington, Wyo. and Brenda K. Walker, Ulysses, Kan.; 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; daughter-in-law and five brothers.
Private cremation was held. Graveside service will be at 5 p.m. Saturday at Grant County Cemetery, Ulysses, Kan.
Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Edward Lee Sigmier
Edward Lee Sigmier, 84, formerly of Poncha Springs, died May 20, 2003, in The Woodlands, Texas.
He was born Oct. 11, 1918, in Tulsa, Okla.
Mr. Sigmier was a retired American Airlines captain with 35 years service and was an accomplished chromatic harmonica player.
His first wife, Jimmie, preceded him in death.
Mr. Sigmier is survived by his second wife, Joan of The Woodlands, Texas; daughters, Cheryl Sigmier, Susan O’Quinn and husband, Dale and Ashley Wolf and husband, Rick; step-children, Valerie and Jeff Bohl and Russell Phifer; brother, Robert Sigmier and wife, Pat; grandchildren, Brad Burnett, Tracey Bailey, Brooke Rhodes, Tiffany O’Quinn, Lindsey O’Quinn, Jamie Sweigart, Aaron Wolf, Jared Wolf, Kalian Sweigart, Leah Wolf, Joel Wolf, Mark Wolf, Hannah Wolf, and Brad Wolf; step-grandchildren, Kelle Bohl, Cassi Bohl and Jessica Phifer and great-grandchildren, Kira Burnett and Marissa Burnett.
Visitation is scheduled from 5-9 p.m. today at Cashner Funeral Home, Conroe, Texas, and from 5-9 p.m. Thursday at Moore Funeral Home, Arlington, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Moore Funeral Home, 1219 N. Davis, Arlington, Texas. Interment will follow in Moore Cemetery, Arlington, Texas.

William ‘Bill’ Keith Jr.
William “Bill” Keith Jr., 43, died May 7, 2003.
He was born in Denver in 1959.
He is survived by his mother, Jeannine Chelf (Frank), Salida; father, Bill Keith, Sr., (A.J.), Denver; brother, Jeff Keith (Denise) and nephews of Lakewood.
Private services were held.

Ruth Elizabeth Wareham
Ruth Elizabeth Wareham, 99, Salida, died May 20, 2003, at Anna Marie’s Personal Care Boarding Home.
Mrs. Wareham was born Sept. 28, 1903, in Mt. Ayr, Iowa, to John and Linnie (Todd) Cooper.
She married Frank Wareham July 10, 1935, in Price, Utah.
Mrs. Wareham was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by her step-son, Harry (Ruth) Wareham, Colorado Springs; step-daughter, Clara (Kenneth) Devlin, Bloomer, Wisc.; brothers, Coleman (Mollie) Cooper, Coaldale and Noel Cooper, Salida; sisters, Cora (Paul) Van Dyke, Coaldale; Catherine Smith, Evansville, Wyo. and Margory Broome, Coaldale and four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Wareham was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Wareham; brother, Main Cooper and sister, Bertha Campbell.
It was Mrs. Wareham’s request that cremation take place and no services be held.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Brian Elwood Heister
Brian Elwood Heister, Romeo, died at home May 19, 2003.
He was born July 21, 1945.
Mr. Heister lived in Salida until the late 1950s. He moved to Grand Junction and later to Romeo.
He was involved in the construction business and for the last years he had Valley Feed and Hardware in Romeo.
He is survived by his wife, Debbie, Romeo; daughters, Carmen Taylor and Chantel Heister; son, Kurt Heister, all of Grand Junction; sister, Judy Martinez, Trinidad; sister, Karen Binkley, Grand Junction and numerous relatives in Salida.
No services are planned at this time.
