Julian M. Maestas
Julian M. Maestas died July 18, 2003, because of complications of pneumonia.
He was born Jan. 28, 1924, in Salida, to John and Laura Maestas.
Mr. Maestas married his sweetheart, Betty Hudson Bates July 9, 1950 and they were inseparable for 53 years.
He enjoyed family gatherings, trips back home to Salida, gardening and baking cakes with Mom.
Mr. Maestas served in the Navy during World War II.
He was a member of Laborer’s Local Union No. 295.
Mr. Maestas was preceded in death by sons, Jimmy and Mike and his father.
He is survived by the love of his life, Betty; daughters, Barbara Lenning, Jackie (James) Hayes, Sherry Maestas (Joe); grandchildren, Jamie, Mark (Isabel), Tara (David), Tiffany (Terry), Sharnae; great-grandchildren, Chandler, Tyler, Braedon, Brooklynn, Bailee, Derek; brother, Jake (Theresa) Maestas; sisters, Betty (George) Roybal, Viola (Ben) Martinez, Dorothy (Ray) Maez, Gloria (Bel) Archuleta, Donna (George) Rendon and Juanita (Juan) Serna and mother, Laura Maestas.
Services were held at 11 a.m. July 22 at 32nd LDS Ward Chapel, 1145 W. 500 S, Salt Lake City, Utah. Interment was at Salt Lake City Cemetery.
John G. Struna
John G. Struna, 83, died July 28, 2003, in Denver.
He was born May 18, 1920, in Salida.
Mr. Struna was preceded in death by his wife, Justine, and daughter, Jeannie (Robert) Johnson.
He is survived by daughters, Kathy (Gordon) Wennen, Colorado Springs and Susan (Eugene) Capolungo, Littleton; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Salida, with burial following at Fairview Cemetery, Salida.
Memorial contributions may be made to Porter Hospice, 2379 S. High St., Denver, CO 80210.

David John Switalski
David John “Skeeter” Switalski, 43, died July 13, 2003, in Saguache County as the result of a work-related accident.
He was born Oct. 1, 1959, in Flint, Mich., to Donald and Arlene (Gorsalitz) Switalski.
He served in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Switalski owned S&H Excavation, Buena Vista.
He lived and worked in Park and Chaffee counties for the last 20 years.
Mr. Switalski was a highly skilled excavator and took pride in the work he did. He had an enthusiasm and passion for life.
He is survived by his daughter, Linsey Ann Hoyt Switalski; son, David James Hoyt Switalski, Buena Vista; brothers, Daniel and Donald and sisters, Sheryl and Teresa.
Mr. Switalski was preceded in death by a brother.
Private cremation was held. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Buena Vista.
Donations to the David J. Switalski Memorial Account to benefit Linsey and David may be made in care of Collegiate Peaks Bank, PO Box 3009, Buena Vista, CO 81211.

Cole Walker
Cole Walker died at his home in Saguache on July 17, 2003, surrounded by friends and family.
He was born in Cañon City and was reared by Merl and Viola Ogden of Salida.
Mr. Walker was a successful horseman throughout his life and spent the last 20 years in Saguache.
He served in the U.S. Navy, was a Chaffee County Deputy Sheriff and was the Undersheriff in Saguache.
Mr. Walker is survived by his sister, Barbara Kwiek; children, Twyla Ann Livings of Howard and Coleman Bill Walker of Del Notre and grandchildren, Jessica Collins, Saguache; Jamie Livings, Howard and Jeremiah Walker, Del Norte.
Ruby Calvano
Ruby Calvano, 72, died July 19, 2003, at her home.
She was born Aug. 19, 1930, in Mogote, to Fidel and Olivama Roybal.
Mrs. Calvano was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Phillip Arthur Roybal.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Tony Calvano, Salida; children, Don (Irene) Calvano, Donna (Tom) Musgrove, Sherry (Francis) Dere, Beverly MacKinon and Louis Calvano; brothers, Waldo (Vonnie) Roybal, Raymond (Sadie) Roybal and Gene Roybal; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was cremated and memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Upper Arkansas Valley Hospice through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Daniel S. Chavez
Daniel S. Chavez, 93, long-time Salida resident, died June 10, 2003, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home.
Mr. Chavez was born March 14, 1910, in Saguache, to Sabino and Carolina (Manchego) Chavez.
He married Lucy Garcia Feb. 13, 1933, in Saguache.
Mr. Chavez was preceded in death by his parents; son, Zeke Chavez; brothers, Zeke and Manuel Chavez; sisters, Eva Chavez, Alici Lucero and grandson, Don Beauchamp.
He is survived by his wife, Lucy Chavez; sons, Dan (Helen) Chavez, Larry (Fede) Chavez and Sam (Helen) Chavez; daughters, Alberta (Ralph) DeLeo, Louise (John) Callison, Cecilia (Mel) Baker, Diana Lawson and Darlene (Jim) Williams; 16 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 10 a.m. Friday, with Mass of the Christian Burial to follow at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery.

Anita (Valerio) Marques
Anita (Valerio) Marques, former Salida resident, died June 4, 2003, in Farmington, N.M.
She was born in Salida Feb. 13, 1926. She was the daughter of Roque and Antonia Valerio.
After moving from Salida she lived many years in New Mexico and Texas.
Mrs. Marques was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Claude Marques; children, Claudette and Ronald Marques and sisters, Alvina Maestas and Isabelle Strickland.
She is survived by her children, Richard Marques (Linda), Claudette Gabel (Alden), Darrell Marques (Barbara), Leonard Marques (Rose); five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and two brothers, Steven and Dennis Valerio.
Beatrice ‘Bea’ R. Cato
Beatrice “Bea” R. Cato died Sept. 26, 2003, in Fort Collins.
She was born Dec. 14, 1907, in Fort Steele, Wyo., to John H. Roberts and Ella Mae Roberts. She was raised in Grass Creek and Coalville, Utah.
Mrs. Cato graduated from the University of Utah in 1927 with a bachelor’s degree in education. She taught school in North Summit County, Utah; Leadville and Sterling, and retired from teaching in the Salida School District in 1972.
She married Vernon Cato June 1, 1931. He preceded her in death in 1981.
Mrs. Cato is survived by her children, Pat Hogan, Moreno Valley, Calif.; Lyz Lockwood, Fort Collins; Robert H. Cato, Ogden, Utah; grandchildren, Verna Watkins, Moreno Valley, Calif.; Steve Lockwood, Fort Collins; Susan Sullivan, Modesto, Calif. and Leslie Smith, Fort Collins; 13 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Her family wants to thank the staff at Columbine Care Center West and Hospice of Larimer County for their love, support and help.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Christ United Methodist Church, 301 E. Drake Rd., Fort Collins.
A family graveside service will be conducted at Fairview Cemetery in Salida at a later date.

Beatrice “Bea” R. Cato
Graveside funeral services for Beatrice “Bea” R. Cato will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Fairview Cemetery.

Claudia M. Witcher
Claudia M. Witcher died Sept. 23, 2003, at her home in Greeley from prolonged medical complications.
She was born Feb. 23, 1954, in Lander, Wyo., to Bill and Faith Witcher and was the granddaughter of the late Merle Wall, Salida.
Ms. Witcher grew up in Denver and attended public schools. She later married Don Burkle of Denver and had two children.
She was an avid crocheter and enjoyed sewing.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Don.
Ms. Witcher is survived by her children, Casey Burkle, Boise, Idaho and Alicia Condiff, San Diego, Calif.; two granddaughters; sisters, Sue (Dan) Gutierrez, Salida and Wyola (Dave) Robitalle, Fairplay; brothers, Clyde Witcher, Casper, Wyo.; Clint Witcher, Casper, Wyo. and Arlo Witcher, Denver and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and a longtime companion, Bernard Lybeck, Denver.
Cremation will take place and a private memorial service is planned for the family later this week.
