Edward Steven Hall
Edward Steven Hall, 63, Salida, died April 26, 2003, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home.
Mr. Hall was born Aug. 1, 1939, in Denver, to Edward S. and Ruth (Spicer) Hall.
He married Kathy Doughten on June 28, 1979, in Nevada.
Mr. Hall was a member of Elks Lodge No. 808, National Rifle Association, American Bowling Congress and a life member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. He owned and operated the Super Bowl Lanes for 30 years.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid archer and bowler. In recent years, he enjoyed ranching and playing with his dog.
Mr. Hall was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Julie Ann Veltrie.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy Hall of Howard; sons, Edward Steven (Michele) Hall II, Fort Collins; Mitchell Mount, Jeffrey Mount and Robert (Celest) Mount, all of Fremont, Calif.; sisters, Louella Nash, Sun City West, Ariz. and Loretta Cornell, Lakewood and grandchildren, Brittany Veltrie of Howard, Barry Hall, Fort Collins, Tawny Mount, Ryan Mount and Coleana Mount, all of Fremont, Calif.
Services are planned for a later date.
Friends who desire may make memorial contributions to the NRA, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation or the American Diabetes Association through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Leslie Baumer
Leslie Baumer, 82, died April 24, 2003, at his home in Salida.
He was born June 15, 1920, in Breckenridge, Minn., to Joseph B. Baumer and Sophia (Bates) Baumer.
Mr. Baumer served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1945 with the 87th Calvary. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, was in the Harley Davidson Motorized Infantry and received an American Theater Service Medal, a European African Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal and one Overseas Service Bar.
He married Shirley (McBride) Engel May 3, 1975, in Longmont. They moved to Salida 18 years ago from Rochester, Minn.
He retired from IBM in 1984 as a design engineer.
Mr. Baumer was a member of Elks Lodge No. 808, Veterans of Foreign Wars, flew with the Civil Air Patrol for 23 years, and was a former member of the American Legion and Sertoma Club.
He enjoyed flying, computers, motorcycles, fishing, skiing, roller skating, ice skating and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Mr. Baumer was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Audrey Tehrene.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley of Salida; brother, Kenneth (Betty) Baumer, Ottertail, Minn.; sons, Walter (Liz) Engel, Federal Heights; David (Toni) Engel, Pahrump, Nev.; Donald (Kay) Engel, Surprise, Ariz.; Eric (Nicole) Engel, Lehi, Utah; Michael (Cheryl) Baumer, New Providence, N.J.; Robert (Maureen) Baumer, Westminster and Richard (Stacy) Baumer, Englewood. Also surviving are daughters, Pamela (Jeff) Alvis, Aurora and Joyce Rehn, Greeley and 24 grandchildren.
Mass of the Christian Burial will begin at noon Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Interment will be at 1 p.m. May 5 at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either the ALS Foundation “Lou Gehrig’s” or the family of Leslie Baumer through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Ann L. Sweeney
Ann L. Sweeney, 84, longtime Salida resident, died April 21, 2003, after a short illness at the Wheat Ridge home of her daughter and son-in-law.
She was born July 30, 1918, in Leadville and moved to Salida at age 10.
She was employed for many years at Salida Drug, retiring in 1981. She was also a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
An avid gardener, she actively worked in and enjoyed her yard. Her greatest love though was her family. Since her retirement, she split her time between Salida and Denver, never missing birthdays or holidays.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Anna and John; sister, Margaret (Paul) Salerno; brother, Bob (Dorothy); grandson, Michael (Jerrilyn) and niece, Jami.
She is survived by her daughter, Georgia (Ken); grandchildren, Renee (Dan) Raisch and Lori (Mitch) Reneau; grandchildren, Ryan Ann and Dane Raisch and Austen and Logan Reneau; brother, Jim (Pauline) and many nieces, nephews, and longtime friend, CeCe Baker.
A memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. May 5 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Salida.

Joseph G. ‘Joe’ Gerk
Joseph G. “Joe” Gerk, 76, died May 12, 2003, at his home in Iliff.
He was born May 9, 1927, at the home of his parents, Jake Gerk and Margaret Sommer, in Iliff.
Mr. Gerk graduated from Iliff High School in 1945.
He married Corinne DeSoto June 5, 1948.
Mr. Gerk was a self-employed auto mechanic in Iliff since 1948.
He was a lifetime member of St. Catherine Catholic Church, a lifetime member of the Sterling Elks Lodge No. 1336, a charter member of the Iliff Lions Club, initial board member of the Iliff Community Center and longtime Mayor of Iliff.
Mr. Gerk loved spending time with his grandchildren, hunting, fishing, gardening and reading. He liked wine-making and was an avid Colorado Rockies fan.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Corinne Gerk, Iliff; children, Ken and Peggy Gerk, Greeley; Peggy (Jim) Lueck, Iliff; Jim and Mary Gerk, Fort Morgan; Chas and Debbie Gerk, Greeley; Geoff and Peggy Gerk, Howard; David “Dewey” Gerk, Greeley and Richard and Dena Gerk, Haxtun.
Surviving grandchildren are Beth Gerk, Kelly and Jason Bush, Kendra Gerk, Nicholas Lueck, Alison Lueck, Paul Gerk, Adam Gerk, Matthew Gerk, Tony Gerk, Andy Gerk, Ashley Gerk, Tyler Gerk, Sam Gerk, Mitch Gerk, Jake Gerk, Megan Gerk and Joey Gerk.
Other survivors are great-grandchild Mackenzie Bush; brothers and sisters, Lawrence Gerk, RoseMary Rizzolo, Marge Schmitt, Stan Gerk, Dorothy Fehringer, Regina Sande, Agnes Gerk, Rita Fehringer, Herman Gerk, Loretta Gerk, OSF and Bill Gerk.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jake and Margaret Gerk.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today, with a Vigil and Rosary service at 7 p.m. at Tennant Funeral Home, 330 S. Second St., Sterling.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Iliff. Officiant will be Fr. James Baird. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Catherine building fund or to Hospice of the Plains in care of Tennant Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1547, Sterling, CO 80751.
Sheree Ann Ogrodnik
Sheree Ann Ogrodnik, 47, Buena Vista, died May 8, 2003, at her home in Buena Vista.
Ms. Ogrodnik was born Aug. 22, 1955, in Fort Worth, Texas, to Charles Garrett and Amanda Alene (Talley) Kosler.
She enjoyed crafts and gardening. She also enjoyed doing missionary work with the 700 Club and the Second Baptist Church in Houston, Texas.
Ms. Ogrodnik was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her fiancé, Mike Pitcock, Buena Vista; son, Brandon Ogrodnik, Houston, Texas and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Memorial services are planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at Mountain Heights Baptist Church, Buena Vista.

Helen Ora Davey
Helen Ora Davey, 81, died May 9, 2003, in Salida.
She was born west of Saguache at Spruce Springs on Dec. 2, 1921, to Wilbur Herman Johnson and Margaret Jane Keller Johnson.
She was married to John Lester Davey on Sept. 29, 1946, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Alamosa.
Her passions were caring for her family, cooking breads on her wood burning stove, gathering wood in the mountains and visiting with neighbors and friends.
Mrs. Davey grew up northwest of Saguache on Jacks Creek, with her parents who were in the lumber business.
She was educated in Saguache schools and attended Adams State College. She visited their Jacks Creek property at nearly every opportunity throughout her life, where she received great comfort.
During her life with Mr. Davey she provided loving care and support while he operated the family ranch located approximately 8 miles south of Saguache.
Mrs. Davey was involved in public and community organizations including Columbine Girl Scouts, Friday Evening Club, Saguache Study Club and Manitou Foundation.
From 1960-1977, Mr. and Mrs. Davey cared for a total of 72 foster children. Sharon Tweedy, a foster daughter, has remained very close to Mrs. Davey.
She is survived by her children, Allen (Marilyn) Davey, Del Norte, Eric (Faye) Davey, Saguache, Jane Whitten, Center; Everett Davey, Saguache, Sandra (Karl) Foerster, Colorado Springs, Carol (Brian) Saeugling, Littleton and Douglas (Cindy) Davey, Saguache; sisters, Marjorie Pier, Constance Schmittel and Merelyn Schmittel as well as 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Her husband, parents and two brothers preceded her in death.
Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hillside Cemetery, Saguache.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Saguache County Ambulance Service.
Arrangements were with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Daniel S. Chavez
Mass of the Christian Burial for Daniel S. Chavez was held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Fr. Henry Grodecki C.M., officiated. The organist was DiAnn Bourget and the soloist was Dave Sommerhauser.
Musical selections were “Morning Has Broken,” “How Great Thou Art” and “Be Not Afraid.”
Pallbearers were John Callison, Mel Baker, Ron Baker, Worth Baker, Jim Williams and William Archuletta.
Honorary pallbearers were Rocky DeLeo, Ralph DeLeo and Daryl Salazar.
Interment was at Fairview Cemetery.
Arrangements were with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Mildred Hillyer
Mildred Hillyer, 82, Buena Vista, died June 16, 2003, in the Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center, Salida.
She was born Jan. 20, 1921, in Fleming, to Joseph A. and Anna (Shelley) Stephens.
She married Wilbur S. Hillyer of Sterling, Sept. 6, 1941.
They lived in Sterling until Oct. 1, 1941, at which time the family moved to the Climax-Leadville area where they lived until Mr. Hillyer’s retirement Aug. 1, 1977.
On that date they moved to Buena Vista, spending several months each year in Phoenix, Ariz.
She was a member of the Leadville Assembly of God Church and Buena Vista Cornerstone Church.
Mrs. Hillyer is survived by her husband, Wilbur Hillyer, Buena Vista; daughter-in-law, Betty Hillyer, Buena Vista; daughter, Sharon (John) Stonehocker, Littleton; son, Bob (Debbie) Hillyer, Cedaredge; daughter, Judy (Frank) Centanino, Casper, Wyo.; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Cornerstone Church, Buena Vista.
Donations may be made to the missions at the Cornerstone Church of Buena Vista.
