Dr. J. Howard Goddard
Dr. J. Howard Goddard died May 1, 2003, in Daytona Beach, Fla., following a fall at home which led to complications and pneumonia.
Dr. Goddard was born July 17, 1910, in Pittsburgh, Pa. His wife of 62 years is Dr. Hazel Goddard. His children are David Goddard and wife, Linda, Colorado Springs and Joan Maute and husband, Mark, Naperville, Ill. He is also survived by six grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
He graduated from Dallas Theological Seminary where he received his doctorate of theology. He was founder and president of Mid South Bible College (renamed Creighton College) in Memphis, Tenn.
The Goddards relocated to Wheaton, Ill., where Dr. Goddard was Bible professor at Wheaton College.
Before retirement, he was a consultant for David C. Cook Publishing Co.
He served on the board of directors for Christian Counseling Ministry of which his wife, Hazel, is founder and president. Dr. Goddard served as Chaplain of Premier Designs, Inc., Dallas, Texas, in his later years.
He continued to mentor pastors and peers through correspondence, sharing his love of scripture and Christian literature.
Dr. Goddard’s interment at the cemetery in Buena Vista will be a private family ceremony.
The public is invited to his memorial service at 1:30 p.m. May 24 at First Baptist Church of Buena Vista. Chaplain Bill Bryan of Dallas Theological Seminary will speak.
Dr. Goddard’s wishes are that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Christian Counseling Ministries, P.O. Box 789, Buena Vista, CO 81211.
Jerry Gunkel
Jerry Gunkel, 60, died of natural causes May 4, 2003, at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center in Salida.
He was born March 17, 1943, in Salida, to Louis G. Gunkel and Blanche C. Miles Gunkel.
Mr. Gunkel graduated from Salida High School in 1961 and joined the Navy, serving in Key West, Fla. during the Cuban crisis.
After completing his service career he moved to St. Louis, Mo., and worked at McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Corp. as an aviation mechanic. His love of airplanes led him to take flying lessons and he became a commercial pilot.
He spent most of his 20 years in the St. Louis area as a corporate pilot and manager of Thunderbird Aviation.
After retirement from flying, he followed a dream he had as an adolescent and returned to Salida to develop the Gunkel property above Maysville.
He started Monarch Spur Campground the summer of 1998 and it now has 30 recreational vehicle sites, two cabins and numerous tent sites.
Mr. Gunkel is survived by his sister, Elsie Porter, Laramie, Wyo.; nephews, David and Jerry Porter, Greeley; stepson, Kevin Handley, Tennessee and various relatives in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Honorary pallbearers will be Calvin “Slick” Evans, Bob Kraemer, Bob McBride, Dennis McCarger, Al “Skip” Procter, John Sterle and Kenneth “Chico” Wertsbaugh.
Priscilla Lane, Mr. Gunkel’s general manager and sweetheart of two-and-one-half years, invites friends and family to a celebration of his life at 3 p.m. Friday at Monarch Spur Campground.
There will be a service led by brother Kenneth Covey of Anchorage, Alaska, and music by Jim and Jeanne Martin of the Z Bar Wranglers. A potluck, with area people bringing dishes to share, will follow.
Contributions may be made to the local humane society or to Salida Mental Retardation Developmental Opportunities.
John Andrew Williams
John Andrew Williams, 80, Salida, died May 4, 2003, at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Williams was born March 30, 1923, in Nebraska City, Neb., to Abraham and Jessie Mae (Sharpe) Williams. He grew up in Idaho Springs.
After graduating from high school he joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served for three years. Mr. Williams served on the USS Basboro as a machinist’s mate 2nd Class in the Asiatic-Pacific area.
He worked for Mountain Bell as a repairman and retired in 1979.
He moved to Salida in 1980.
Mr. Williams was a life-time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
His interests included hunting, fishing and the mountains.
He is survived by his wife, Verna Culp Williams, Salida; granddaughter, Jessica Strickland, Lakewood; brothers, George Gress, Battle Mountain, Nev. and Earl Williams, Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; step-children, Charles (Tamara) Culp, Karen (Jesse) Purdy and David Culp. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Williams was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Williams; daughters, Mary Louise Hankins and Patricia Marie Strickland.
It was at his request that cremation take place and no services be held.
Arrangements were with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Robert Harold Lippert
Robert Harold Lippert, 65, Salida, died May 3, 2003, at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Lippert was born June 16, 1937, in Detroit, Mich., to Martin and Agnes (Smith) Lippert.
He married Anne Camilleri in 1964 in Detroit.
Mr. and Mrs. Lippert moved to Salida one-and-a-half years ago from Denver.
He worked for United Airlines for 44 years.
He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed flying, golf and hockey.
Mr. Lippert was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Anne, Salida; sons, Stephen (Colleen) Lippert, Germany; Timothy (Lena) Lippert, Highlands Ranch and Jeffrey (Terri) Lippert, Lakewood; brother, Barry (Sunny) Lippert, Atwater, Calif.; sister, Dolly Paul, Inkster, Mich.; grandchildren, Cortney and Savannah Lippert, Germany and Lauren Lippert, Highlands Ranch.
Mass of the Christian Burial is scheduled for noon Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Robert Harold Lippert
Mass of the Christian Burial for Robert Harold Lippert was held at noon Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Fr. Henry Grodecki, C.M., officiated. Organist was DiAnn Bourget and Soloist was Jeanne Kostelic.
Musical selections were “Jesus Remember Me,” “On Eagles Wings,” “May The Angels Welcome You To Paradise” and “Lord of the Dance.”
The eulogy was delivered by Mr. Lippert’s sons, Steve, Timothy and Jeff.
Pallbearers were Barry Lippert, Sandy Lippert, James Minor Sr., James Minor Jr., Terrance Camilleri and Katie Minor. Honorary pallbearers were James Camilleri and Gerald Meis.
Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery.
Arrangements were with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Shane Bart Berry
Funeral services for Shane Bart Berry were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Rev. Jim Jennings officiated.
Several musical selections were played on CD.
Pallbearers were Evan Cook, Travis Williams, Sam Williams, Tyler Berry, Buck Sage and Thadeus Wolff.
Honorary pallbearers were Wes Sage, Scott Taylor and Shawn Cline.
Interment was at Fairview Cemetery.
Arrangements were with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Judy Owens
Funeral services for Judy Owens were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Rev. Rick Gregory officiated.
The following musical selections were played on CD: “One Day At A Time,” “Life’s Railway To Heaven” and “Softly And Tenderly.”
Pallbearers were Tim Denison, Kameron Simon, Alan Owen, Steve Wait, Rob Collins and Bill Hayes.
Honorary pallbearers were Kyle New, Kody Simon and Devin Collins.
Interment was at Fairview Cemetery.

Wyvne Z. Kennedy
Wyvne Z. Kennedy, 80, died May 25, 2003, in Amarillo, Texas.
Mrs. Kennedy was born Dec. 27, 1922, to Albert and Mary (Parker) Brewer in Grayburg, Texas.
She married Cletus Kennedy Sr., in Beaumont, Texas, in 1945 and moved to Salida in 1955 from Dumas, Texas.
Mrs. Kennedy was a member of Temple Baptist Church. She loved crocheting, knitting, movies, reading and all sports. She was a member of the Salida Women’s Softball League.
Mrs. Kennedy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Cletus and brothers, Henry, Malcom, Charlie and Albert Brewer.
She is survived by sons, Cletus (Faye) Kennedy Jr., Cañon City and Robert (Nita) Kennedy, Amarillo, Texas; daughter, Sharon Rust, Amarillo, Texas; grandchildren, John Kennedy, Wyvne Post, Chris Rust, Shawna Rust, Amy Rust, Chris Kennedy, Stephen Kennedy, Chris Pilgrim, Shera Pitt and Holly Vanderbush and great-grandchildren, Tyler Kennedy, Sammuel Pitt, Marshal Pitt, Aden Vanderbush, Abigail Vanderbush, Dean Vanderbush, Cole Pilgrim and Drake Pilgrim.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1-4 p.m. Thursday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home. Services are set for 9 a.m. Friday at Temple Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
