Evelyn Miller

Evelyn (Mary Evelyn) Miller, formerly of Salida, died June 20, 2001, in Springfield.
She was born Sept. 4, 1909, in Balko, Okla. She was the second of eight children born to David and Jemima (Abbott) Stagner. They lived in a dugout with dirt floors on a small farm. They raised cows, pigs and chickens to feed the family.
October 1917, the family headed west in a covered wagon with six children. They homesteaded on a farm about 11 miles east and one mile north of Campo.
Mrs. Miller went one year to school in Oklahoma and the rest at the Grandview school in Colorado, through the eighth grade.
She was married to Monroe Miller Feb. 2, 1930.
In 1944 the family bought a farm 11 miles east of Campo. They raised cattle, pigs, chickens, turkeys and pet rabbits and had a large garden.
In 1957, Monroe and Evelyn separated and Evelyn moved to Springfield. She worked at various cafes and did house cleaning. In July 1970, Evelyn moved to Salida to enjoy the mountains. In June of 1991 she moved back to Springfield.
Mrs. Miller was a member of the Royal Rebekah Lodge of Springfield. She enjoyed crocheting and made many afghans and lap throws. She enjoyed watching baseball games on TV or listening to them on the radio. She also enjoyed playing cards at the senior center.
Mrs. Miller is survived by sons, Lyle (Barbara), Louisiana, Gene (Yvonda), Texas, Vergil (Dorothy), California, Ralph (Ellen), Salida; daughter, Beulah Mae, Springfield; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brothers, Harrison (Uda), Colorado and Andrew (Grace) of Oklahoma; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by daughter, Della; sister, Eleanor; brothers, Melvin, Bert, Paul and Howard; and her parents.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. today at Rich’s Funeral Chapel in Springfield. Interment will be at Campo Cemetery.

Ollie W. Jackson

Ollie W. Jackson, 87, longtime Salida resident, died June 25, 2001, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home.
Mr. Jackson was born Aug. 13, 1913, to Fleetwood and Roseline (Berard) Jackson, in Fairview, Mont.
He moved to Salida in 1959. Mr. Jackson worked for many years as a truck driver. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Salida since 1971.
He was preceded in death his wife, Leotta Jackson; step-son, Darcy L. Battles; and his parents.
Mr. Jackson is survived by his son, Ronald L. (Cheryl) Jackson, Salida; step-daughter, Arlene K. Martin, Fort Collins; half sister, Doris Turner, Great Falls, Mont.; grandchild, Jennifer Martin; and lifelong friends, Edward and Helen Powell and Phyllis and Bill Griffith, Ada, Ohio.
Services are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Salida.
Memorial contributions may be made to either Angelview Therapeutic Horsemanship Center or United Methodist Church through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Fred Paquette

Fred Paquette, a lifetime Chaffee County resident, died April 21, 2001, at St. Anthony Central Hospital.
He suffered a heart attack while he was working in his yard April 16.
He was born at Centerville, Feb. 16, 1915. His parents, Rosa (Hepp) and Omer Paquette, were from pioneer Chaffee County families.
Paquette spent his childhood in Buena Vista and graduated from Buena Vista High School in 1931.
He married Buena Vista resident, Ruth Mosher, July 10, 1937, who survives him after almost 64 years of marriage.
Fred worked primarily as a meat cutter from an early age. With George Daniel and Moritz Kerndt, Paquette owned and operated the Salida Boys’ Market until his retirement in 1971.
Soon after, he started his second career with the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Department as a dispatcher. He became a deputy sheriff and continued in that position until 1974, when he retired to spend the rest of his life devoting his time to his family, the outdoors, gardening, and a wide variety of crafts and hobbies.
Paquette enjoyed and was skilled in the art of making doll house furniture.
He was a Marine during World War II and was a member of the American Legion. He was a member of Salida Elks Lodge No. 808 for more than 50 years and was a member of Salida Masonic Lodge No. 57 AF&AM.;
In the early 1960s, he was a founding member of Chaffee County Jeep Patrol Search and Rescue.
He continued to take part in every search and rescue mission in some capacity until his health prevented it.
In addition to his wife, Ruth, he is survived by son, Fred “Fritz” Paquette, a physician in Denver; daughter, Judy (Harold) Starbuck, Salida; granddaughters, Melissa Starbuck, Chicago, Ill. and Amy Starbuck (Jeremiah) Bennett, Golden.
A celebration of his life will be held at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Betty Moir Reeves

Betty Moir Reeves, died June 30, 2001, in a car accident.
She was born in St. Louis, Mo., Jan. 9, 1918.
Mrs. Reeves graduated from Webster Groves High School in 1936 and from the University of Missouri in 1940, with a bachelor of science degree in education with a major in public school music.
She married William Nicholas Reeves June 11, 1941. They had three children.
Mrs. Reeves first lived in Glens Falls, N.Y., and then Boulder. She taught elementary music in Boulder for 21 years, retiring in 1982. In her retirement, she worked at Boulder’s Dinner Theater.
She is survived by her children, Becky Reeves (Richard) Bishop, Stevensville, Mont., Bill (Dr. Mary) Reeves, Salida, Barb Reeves (Kip) Kuepper, Boulder; brother, Robert (Susan) Moir; 13 grandchildren and five nieces and nephews.
A memorial service celebration will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Boulder.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Foundation for the Boulder Valley Schools, P.O. Box 9011, Boulder, CO, 80301.

Susan Loafman

Susan “Susie” Marie Loafman, 71, Silver Cliff, died July 11, 2001, at her home.
She was born May 19, 1930, in Westcliffe, to the late Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Sanchez.
Mrs. Loafman graduated from Custer County High School in 1950.
She opened Susie’s Cafe and Bar in downtown Westcliffe in 1964. For decades, the restaurant was the center of activity in the business district and attracted visiting politicians, movie stars, summer residents, tourists and a steady stream of regular customers. The restaurant’s motto for many years was “If you haven’t been to Susie’s, you haven’t been to Westcliffe.”
Mrs. Loafman was active in numerous civic organizations, including the Chamber of Commerce, the Merchants Association, the Altar and Rosary Society, Custer County Cattle Women, the Womens Club, Silver Cliff Club and was a member of the cemetery committee.
Mrs. Loafman and her family lived on a small ranch south of Westcliffe for a number of years before moving to Silver Cliff several years ago. She was a foster mother to more than 30 children. She was always willing to help anyone in need.
Mrs. Loafman is survived by her husband, Danny Loafman, Silver Cliff; children, Danny (Vera) Diaz, Westcliffe, Steve (Denise) Loafman, Pueblo, Dannette Loafman (Donnie) Pike, Westcliffe, Martha Flower (Doug) Dailey, Pueblo and Johnnie (Lawrence) Grisham, Arizona; brothers; Raymond Sanchez, Westcliffe, Arthur Sanchez, Layton, Utah and Luz (Connie) Sanchez, Salida; sister, Belinda (Oliver) Gettel, Westcliffe; 18 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Jon Crowell; sister-in-law, Bernice Sanchez and brother, Steve Sanchez.
Visitation was Friday at Florence Mortuary, 120 N. Pikes Peak, Florence.
Mass was at 1 p.m. Saturday at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church in Westcliffe.

Norma T. Clare

Norma T. Clare died April 25, 2001, at Integrated Health Services, Pueblo.
She was born in Westcliffe, Oct. 21, 1906, to Will Heisterburg.
A graduate of Mt. St. Scholastica in 1924, she went on to train in nursing at St. Joseph Hospital. After graduating from college she moved to Salida, where she secured her first job with the Red Cross Hospital.
After a few years she began to work for the D&RG; Hospital, which later became the Salida Hospital. After 40 years of service and a promotion to superintendent of nursing, she retired.
In 1980, she moved to Denver to live with her son, Bill, and daughter-in-law, Marylyn. She lived with them for 15 years in Broomfield, then moved with them to Pueblo.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward (Frosty) Clare; cousin, William Kettle; aunt and uncle, Margret (Harry) Kettle; and granddaughter, Tiffany Hoyt.
Clare is survived by a son, William A. (Marylyn) Clare; grandchildren, Norma (Stephen) Knudsen, Maureen (Michael) Cook, Patrick (Kelly) Clare, Karen (Brad) Hoyt, William Clare II and Michael (Roxy) Clare; great-grandchildren, Jordon, Jason, Jessica, Nicole, Jordyn, Marie, Natalie, Brittanie and Cole.
A memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Ascension Episcopal Church, Salida.
Inurnment will be at Fairview Cemetery, Salida.

Laura Perri

Laura Perri, 85, Salida, died July 14, 2001, at Anna Marie’s Personal Care Center, Salida.
Mrs. Perri was born Nov. 8, 1915, in Bucita, Cosenza, Italy, to Emilio and Adelina (Luchetta) Alessandrini.
Her interests were gardening, cooking and canning. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Mrs. Perri is survived by her sons, Bill Perri, Pueblo and Frank Perri, Salida; grandchildren, Frank (Lori) Perri, Tina (Jim) Perri Mundy, Mike Perri, Lisa Perri, Kevin Perri, Danny (Cindy) Perri and Laurie (Barry) Sherman; six great-grandchildren; in-laws, Marie Perri, Thornton, Frank (Erma) Perri, Salida and Bill (Eleanor) Perri, Denver; and many other relatives in Italy and many cousins in Salida.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Pete Perri; son, Sam Perri and brothers and sisters.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Mass of the Christian Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. Interment will take place at Fairview Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church though Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Dennis W. Heckel

Dennis W. Heckel, 60, Salida, died Feb. 6, 2001, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home.
He was born Aug. 4, 1940, in Denver, to William and Valerie (Walsh) Heckel.
He married Deanna Schlenz May 20, 1961, in Castle Rock.
Heckel served in the Army as an electronics technician from 1957-1960. He worked for KVRH Radio and Mountain Bell. He owned and operated his own business, Custom 2-Way Radio.
His interests included hunting, the mountains, model rocketry, four-wheel driving, and he was known for his knowledge of local history of the area.
Heckel is survived by his wife, Deanna Heckel, Salida; sons, Dennis (Brenda) Heckel II, Salida and Clint (Teresa) Heckel, Colorado Springs; daughters, Debra (Dennis) Crosser, Colorado Springs and Tina (Richard) Umbel, Burlington, Wis.; grandchildren, April Heckel, Benjamin Heckel, Christian Heckel, Alyssa Heckel, Samantha Murray, Tierney Crosser, Travis Umbel and Jessica Umbel.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Leon Heckel.
Visitation will be from 1-4:30 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m.-noon Friday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Temple Baptist Church.
Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association through Lewis and Glenn Mortuary.
