Kathleen Cantonwine-Masters

Kathleen A. (Truitt) Cantonwine-Masters, 72, Salida, formerly of Sterling, died May 5, 2001, at her residence in Salida.
She was born Nov. 27, 1928, in Sterling, to William and Helen (Brown) Truitt.
She is survived by her sons, Fred (Gloria) Cantonwine, Las Cruces, N.M., Mike (Sherry) Cantonwine, Greeley, Gerry Cantonwine, Fort Collins, Doug (Anne) Cantonwine, Salida; four step-children; brothers, William “Bay” Truitt, Sterling, John Barton, Sterling and Bob Truitt, El Paso, Texas; sister, Shirley (Wilbur) Johnson, San Diego, Calif.; grandchildren, Greg, Lisa, John, Michelle, Jeremiah, Pam and Marisa.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Alfred Cantonwine and Glenn Masters.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date in Sterling.
Memorial contributions may be made to Angel Flight West, 3237 Donald Douglas Loop South, Santa Monica, Calif., 90405.
Arrangements for cremation were made through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Ralph L. Scanga Sr.

Ralph L. Scanga Sr., 93, longtime Salida resident, died May 7, 2001, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home.
He was born Nov. 6, 1907, in Poncha Springs, to Joseph and Jennie (Posteraro) Scanga.
He was educated in Poncha Springs. In 1923 he moved with his parents to Lago, Italy where he attended the Italian-American Institute of Clothing Design, graduating in 1925.
After graduation, he returned to the United States and worked as a tailor in Pittsburgh, Pa., and as an apprentice machinist. In 1937, he moved to Pueblo and worked as a machinist with Gobatti Engineering.
In addition, he tailored and sold garments for Gibson and Co.
In 1941, he was inducted by the Navy as a precision machinist on Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, Calif. He was honorably discharged in 1947 — the year he met his wife of many years, Jane Turano and they were wed in January 1948. The couple first lived in Vallejo, Calif.
In 1950, they returned to Salida and in 1951, built a home on his ranch in Poncha Springs. In 1952, he and his wife bought a ranch in Sand Park, two miles west of Salida and founded Scanga Meat Co. He resided at the ranch until his death.
Scanga loved Salida and was an outspoken promoter of the area. He was a supporter of many local institutions — in particular, Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
He and his wife, Jane, square danced for more than 20 years with the Shavano Shufflers and the Monarch Mavericks.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and was a member of the Salida Elks Lodge No. 808 for 25 years. He was an active Rotarian for five years and was a member of the Chaffee County Cattlemen’s Association.
Scanga’s passing marks the end of the first generation of descendants of the early pioneer Italian families who settled and ranched in the Upper Arkansas Valley in the late 1800s.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Scanga, Salida; sons, Bill (Garnet) Scanga, Las Vegas, Nev., Ralph “Terry” (Beverly) Scanga Jr., Salida, James (Holly) Scanga, Salida and David (Pennie) Scanga, Grand Junction; daughter, Eileen Horan, Hellam, Pa.; 26 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Jim, Bruno, Greg, Emilo and Dominic Scanga; sisters, Nettie Post and Mary Scanga.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4:30 p.m. at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Mass of the Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. and interment will be at Fairview Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center Kidney Dialysis Fund, through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Donald Jack Swallow

Donald Jack Swallow, 68, longtime Salida resident, died May 27, 2001, at his home.
He was born July 5, 1932, in Johnstown, Pa., to Mildred (Sanderson) and Donald Swallow.
Mr. Swallow served in the Navy and was honorably discharged in 1951.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Swallow is survived by his cousins, Elizabeth and Susan Shuman, Johnstown, Pa. and George Shuman, Nantucket, Mass.
Graveside services at will be at 2 p.m. today at Fairview Cemetery.
Arrangements are with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

John Michael Quinn Jr.

John Michael Quinn Jr., 78, Salida, died June 8, 2001, at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Quinn was born Dec. 11, 1922, to John Michael and Jesse (Stone) Quinn.
He moved to Salida about five years ago from Wheatridge. Mr. Quinn worked for many years as a manager for the Bureau of Land Management. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, a skier and enjoyed hiking in the mountains.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Quinn is survived by his wife, Wilma Quinn, Wheatridge; son, John M. Quinn III (Sue Milovina-Quinn), Durham, N.H.; daughter, Joan Quinn, Albuquerque, N.M.; sister, Jane Kapherman, Casper, Wyo.; and two grandchildren.
There are no services planned at this time.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Nature Conservancy Association through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home, P.O. Box 925, Salida, 81201.

DeAun Winfield

DeAun Winfield, 75, Salida, died June 5, 2001.
She was born in Clovis, N.M. June 21, 1925, to Ben Hubby and Ollie (Duke) Hubby.
She married Kenneth Carl Winfield May 9, 1955, in Clovis, N.M.
Kenneth and DeAun moved to Villa Grove in 1955 where they co-owned and operated the Villa Grove Turquoise Mine. In 1957 they moved to Salida, where they made their home for the next 43 years.
Mrs. Winfield was a homemaker and enjoyed spending numerous hours in her garden and taking care of her yard and flower beds. She was an active member of the Temple Baptist church and was a Sunday School teacher for many years.
Mrs. Winfield is survived by her son, David Winfield, Salida; daughters, Bonnie Gitto, Wilmington, N.C., Lonnie Drobnick, Golden, Becky (Lupe) Flores, Denver and Patsy (Paul) McDowell, Mesa, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Ben Freddie Hubby, Memphis, Tenn. and sister, Linda Sehorn, Clovis, N.M.
She was preceded in death by her parents; spouse; brother, James Hubby; sister, Patsy Lytle and sons-in-law, James Drobnick and Anthony Gitto.
Services are to be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Temple Baptist Church.
Mrs. Winfield will be interred beside her husband, Kenneth, at Fairview Cemetery.
Arrangements are with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Naomi White

Naomi White, 88, a resident of Buena Vista for the past 19 years, died June 4, 2001, at her residence in Buena Vista.
Mrs. White was born Nov. 25, 1912, in Herrin, Ill. to Paul and Lora (Menier) McNeill.
She married Basil White April 12, 1936, in Royalton, Ill.
Mrs. White’s interests were the mountains, walking around Buena Vista and taking care of her grandsons.
She is survived by her sons, Paul (Marilyn) White, Largo, Fla. and Timothy (Barbara) White, Glendale Heights, Ill.; daughter, Kathy (Dennis) Norman, Buena Vista; brothers, Larry (Kathryn) McNeill, Wheaton, Ill. and Jerry (Bonnie) McNeill, Wheaton, Ill.; sister, Murcille McNeill, Downers Grove, Ill.; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Basil White; son, Gary White; brother, Clarence McNeill; sisters, Eva Duncan, Thelma Kepple, Velma Prough and Betty McNeill.
Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. today at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Buena Vista.
Arrangements are with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

William McCarl

William McCarl, 73, Salida, died June 5, 2001, at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
Mr. McCarl was born April 28, 1928, in Winner, S.D., to Joseph and Helen (Arneson) Schuller.
He married Laverna Paulson Sept. 20, 1949. They moved to Salida in 1965.
Mr. McCarl was an active member of Salida Elks Lodge 808, a Past Exalted Ruler and a charter member. He enjoyed life playing golf and enjoyed being involved with the Elks charity and youth programs.
Mr. McCarl was a past Boy Scout leader and especially enjoyed Babe Ruth Baseball.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. McCarl is survived by his wife, Laverna McCarl, Salida; sons, David (Dianna) McCarl, Littleton and Thomas (Kim) McCarl, South Fork; daughter, Connie McClure, Snellville, Ga. and cousin, Dr. John Arneson, Rapid City, S.D.; grandchildren, Alicia McClure, Tami McCarl, Landon McCarl, Sara McCarl and Kevin McCarl.
Memorial services are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Salida Elks Lodge 808.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salida Babe Ruth League through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Pauline Schneiter

Pauline Schneiter, 101, died Feb. 1, 2001, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home.
Pauline was born in New Philadelphia, Ohio, Sept. 11, 1899, to John and Anna Wallick.
She married Carl Schneiter June 20, 1918.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1950 and daughter, Geraldine in 1961.
Pauline and Carl moved to Buena Vista in 1945. They owned and operated Schneiter Service Station, Grocery and Liquor store (now Little Daisy).
After selling the businesses, she managed the Sterling Trailer Court for 17 years. After that was sold, she lived with her daughter, Ruth Linke and grandchildren Cal and Carle in Buena Vista.
For many years, Pauline was active in the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She loved to crochet and do embroidery and gave most her work away through the Legion.
Schneiter is survived by daughter, Ruth; grandchildren, Cal and Carle Linke, Buena Vista, and Larry (Becky) Schneiter; great-grandchildren, Andrea (Greg) Allen, Troy Schneiter and wife, all of Farmington, N. M.; grandson, Dan Schneiter, Clearlake, Calif., and his children, Clifford, David and wife, Michelle, of Buena Vista.
Pauline’s son, Carl (Elva) Schneiter Jr., Leadville, and their children Gail (Eric) Gunnerson, Logan, Utah, Kay (Bob) Hartzell, Leadville, Debbie (Steve) Pace, Rifle and Jim (Dawna) Schneiter, Leadville.
Pauline will be buried with her husband at Dover Burial Park in Dover, Ohio. Memorial services are pending.
Donations may be sent to the American Legion Post 55, Buena Vista, 81211.
