Olive C. Graham, Boulder, CO

1914 - 2008

Olive C. Graham, 94, died July 20, 2008 at the Frasier Meadows Health Care Center.

Olive was born on June 11, 1914 in Ottawa, IL to William and Gurlie (Anderson) Carlstrom. She graduated from Falconer Grade School, and Schurz High School in Chicago. She also attended the Art Institute of Chicago. On December 21, 1931 she married Barclay McCouch Graham in Chicago, IL.

She was a homemaker, a profession she relished with all her heart, unfailingly devoted to caring for her family. Her greatest personal pleasures were found in creating works of art, cooking, and gardening.

Olive became an avid watercolorist, later trained herself in Japanese brush-painting, and ultimately brought those talents to a focus in creating original needlepoint art works, winning several national awards. She traveled extensively and made many long-term friends touring the globe. Family motor trips, to almost every state in the country, made up the 1950’s trips; then trips to Europe with her sons the 60’s; and eventually several trips to the orient and a grand-tour around the world. She loved to share the joys of her trips with new friends, even to her last days. The Park Ridge Country Club had been one of her favorite places to savor friendships, fine meals, and beautiful surroundings.

She moved to Boulder and Frasier Meadows in 1996, where for 12 years she greeted new neighbors with love and freshly baked muffins. Olive had an abiding faith in God and in serving others. She was an active member of the Park Ridge Community Church where she formed many dear friendships and contributed many of her works to the Christmas bazaars. In earlier years, her giving spirit found expression in hours of service to the needy through participation in the Chicago Infant Welfare Society.

Margaret "Margie" Hawkins Sugar, Boulder, CO

1926 - 2008

Margaret “Margie” Hawkins Sugar, known for her love of life, family and friends, died of cancer on October 14th, 2008 at age 82 in her Boulder, Colorado home.

Mother of four children, Margie had three grandchildren, was married three times and a good friend to hundreds of people – relationships filled her life. An adventuresome and inveterate traveler, Margie visited over 48 countries. For her, “going to a new place, walking on the land and getting to know its people are one of my greatest joys”.

Margaret Sugar was born Margaret Eleanor Hawkins, August 22, 1926 in Washington, PA and lived for the first 4 years of her life in a Venezuelan oil exploration camp where her father Glenn DeWayne Hawkins worked. Her family settled in Tulsa, OK where she grew up with her sister Elisabeth (Libby) and brother William (Bill). The family spent summers in Wyoming’s Teton Mountains.

Like her mother Isabel Lambie Hawkins, Margaret attended Wells College in Wells, NY, graduating in 1948 with a degree in Political Science. At a meeting of The One World Foreign Relations Club in 1947 she met Richard (Dick) Cornelison from Salt Lake.

They married in 1949 and raised their four children in Chagrin Falls and Hudson, OH. Margie was active in the American Field Service, Girl Scouts and did bonsai as a Master Gardener. Margie & Dick shared their love of the outdoors on family ski trips to their western NY cabin.

With her children mostly grown, Margie worked as a travel agent and international tour guide. She married Eldon Ferguson in 1978, bringing her to Boulder – coincidentally the same month her son John entered Colorado College. Her daughter Anne also settled in Boulder and had three children. These grandchildren brought Margie a great source of joy.

In 1981, Margie met George Sugar at a Unitarian Universalist Church event. George and Margie married in 1985 and had 23 loving years together, the earlier ones with George’s sons, David and Robert (Bob) at home. As Margie’s brother and sister had also moved to the region, Margie hosted many grand family gatherings!

Active with civic organizations such as HospiceCare and the Boulder Police, as well as Copper’s Over the Hill Ski Gang, the Unitarian Church and a vibrant Trident Coffee group, Margie thrived on socializing and bringing people together from her diverse social networks. She traveled to learn of other’s cultures and befriended many wonderful characters. Margie’s warmth and vivacious personality touched many worldwide. Her intellect, interest in art, architecture, politics and culture made for engaging discussions.

Two years ago, Hugh (Mac) McGinty lit up her life. They were dear friends and frequently danced and socialized. Just three days before her death they went to a coffee klatch and attended both an opera and chamber music performance!

In her last months, Margie was content with her fate. She continued to focus on others. Never afraid to ask a frank question, she truly cared about those she came in contact with.

Margie is survived by sons Peter Cornelison of Hood River OR, John Cornelison of Vashon WA, and daughters Elizabeth Humphreys of La Clarita, CA, and Anne Donovan of Boulder and three grandchildren. Her stepsons David and Robert (Bob) Sugar are of Longmont and Boulder respectively. Her sister Elizabeth (Libby) lives in Boulder and her brother William (Bill) in Evergreen.

A celebration of Margie’s life will be at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Boulder at 5100 Pennsylvania Ave. at 3 PM, Sunday, November 2nd. More on Margie’s life can be found at www.MSugar.com.

She continued her involvement with both Hospice and the Unitarian church in Florida and in Colorado.

Showing incredible courage in 1943, she drove alone with her 6-week-old daughter, cross country from Portsmouth, Virginia, to Whidby Island, Washington, so that her husband, then a Navy lieutenant, could meet his first child before shipping out to the Pacific theater. This was in a time of strict war rationing, but across the country, people gave her gasoline, oil, and tires so that she could complete her journey of over 3, 000 miles.

Now the journey of her life here on Earth is completed. The family is deeply grateful to those at Golden West Assisted Living in Boulder, Colorado, Calco’s Assisted Living in Quantico, Maryland, and Coastal Hospice who helped to make her final years ones of peace and comfort.
