1950 - 2008

Cary C. Lacklen, 57, died Saturday, June 21, 2008 at his residence in Boulder.

Cary was born June 24, 1950 to Jesse & Mary Jane (Comley) Lacklen in Washington, D.C.

He graduated from high school in Arlington, VA in 1968, Duke University in Durham, NC in 1971. Between graduation from Duke Univ. and starting Law School, he was a bailiff for the D.C. court system. He graduated from Georgetown University Law School in Washington, D.C. in 1975.

Cary was a Public Defender in Greeley for 2 years before coming to Boulder where he was a Public Defender for 30 years. He defended a privacy case in front of the U.S. Supreme Court at age 36.

He is survived by his loving mother, Mary Jane Lacklen of Arlington, VA; son, David Lacklen of San Francisco, CA; two sisters, Patrice Ashcroft of Tallahassee, FL and Diane McCurdy of Bridgewater, VA and three nieces, Arin and Brittany Caricofe and Jody McCurdy, Bridgewater, VA.

Memorial Services will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, June 26th at Chautauqua on the Greens, 900 Baseline, Boulder, CO. Immediately following the memorial, there will be a gathering at the Williams’ residence, 2441 Briarwood Dr., Boulder, CO 80305.

John Fraser Konjevod

1967 - 2008

John Fraser Konjevod, 41 of Broomfield, Colorado passed away suddenly on August 15, 2008 at his home in Broomfield.

He was born on May 5, 1967 in Los Angeles, California to Marko and Margaret Konjevod. He married Rebecca Tetlow in Lafayette, Colorado on October 1, 2004. John graduated from the University of Colorado in 1989 with a BA in Economics. His most recent employment was the Senior Manager for Charles Schwab.

John leaves behind his grieving family; wife, Rebecca Konjevod and his 2 children, Mara Jane (age 2) and Ana Elizabeth (age 10 months) John and Beckey recently shared their excitement at the news that their third child will be born in the spring of 2009. His parents, Marko and Margaret Konjevod, brother Mark Konjevod and nieces, Katharine and Alexandra, Sister, Joanna Konjevod and nephew, Jackson. They will miss him immensely.

John enjoyed skiing, running, cycling, photography, and was a lover of music.

He will be dearly missed by his family and friends and his extended family throughout Croatia and Canada. John was a supportive, unselfish, humble father, husband, son, brother and friend, with a very quick wit.

A Celebration of John's life will be on Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at 9:00 am, Bethlehem Lutheran Church 1000 15th Ave., Longmont, Colorado 80501.

Rose M. Lehndorff, Boulder, CO

1916 - 2008

Mrs. Rose M. Lehndorff, 91, passed away peacefully July 22, 2008 at Boulder Community Hospital. She was a 10-year resident at Boulder's Atrium senior residence. Daily Camera readers came to know Mrs. Lehndorff (and her potato-Italian sausage turkey stuffing) through the columns of her son, former Camera food editor, John Lehndorff.

She was born October 2, 1916 in Willimantic, Conn., daughter of Sicilian immigrants, Michael and Vincenza Mazzola. She graduated from St. Raphael's School of Nursing in New Haven where she met her loving husband, Peter G. Lehndorff, M.D. They were married August 12, 1940 in Willimantic, Conn. She raised her family in Fitchburg, Mass. from 1951-1998. She loved being a mom, growing flowers, tanning by the pool, playing bingo and eating prime rib.

She is survived (and deeply missed) by her sister, Josephine Koval of Columbia, Conn; children: Lisa Lehndorff of Lafayette; Barbara King of Reno, Nevada; Peter (Kathy) Lehndorff of Hampden, Mass. John (Betsy) Lehndorff of Boulder; Paul (Kathleen) Lehndorff of Clifton, Tenn.; grandchildren Hans, Azalea and Sarah Lehndorff and Nicole (Tim Wietzel) and Morgan (Leah) King; and great-grandchildren Nate Wietzel and Frida King.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter.

A celebration of Mrs. Lehndorff's life will take place 2 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2008 at the Atrium, 3350 30th St., Boulder.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to support the extraordinary mission of the Boulder County Hospice.

A few days before she passed away, Mrs. Lehndorff came out of her deepening slumber long enough to say to her son: "Goodbye world. I've had a wonderful life."

Josephine Margaret Studebaker, Boulder

1911 - 2008

Josephine Margaret Studebaker was born in Sioux City, Iowa on June 9, 1911 to Elias and Jamely Rizk. She died June 27th 2008 at the age of 97.

She was, married and had 6 children before moving to Boulder in 1953. Josephine lived in her home in Boulder at 1537 North St. for 55 years and was a member of Sacred Heart Church.

She is survived by 2 brothers and 2 sisters and all her children: Jerald, Thomas, Richard, William and Edward Studebaker who all live in Colorado and Sally Knight her daughter who lives in South Carolina and who cared for her in her final 9 months of her life. Josephine had 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

She had a degree in Journalism and worked for Sacred Heart and St. Martin de Porres churches, NeoData, and retired from Social Services in 1981.

A memorial mass will be held at Scared Heart of Jesus Church 1318 Mapleton, Boulder on Tuesday August 5th at 12:10 pm. A Rosary will precede mass at 11:30 am and a reception will fellow in Jubilee Hall.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice Care of Boulder or Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Margaret Starkey, Lafayette, CO

Margaret Starkey, of Lafayette passed away Monday, June 30, 2008. She was 93. Darrell Howe Mortuary of Lafayette is handling arrangements.

Velma Evelyn (DeWalt) Gould, Boulder

1913 - 2008

Velma Evelyn (DeWalt) Gould died June 10, 2008, at her home north of Boulder, Colorado. She was born June 18, 1913, southwest of Longmont, Colorado. Her parents were Elbert Wilson DeWalt and Edith Mary (Trevarton) DeWalt.

Velma was preceded in death by her husband Frank. Survivors include one son, Gerald (Sheryl) Gould, Loveland, CO; two daughters, Nancy (Larry) Nolte, Blue Rapids, KS; and Judith (Ronnie) Dayhoff, Boulder, CO; six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and sister-in-law, Helen (Gould) Wallace, Denver, CO.

A memorial service will be held at United Methodist Church of Hygiene, 7542 Hygiene Road, at 10:30 AM, Friday, July 25. A luncheon will be served in the Fellowship Hall immediately following the service. Inurnment at Ryssby Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Family Hospice in Boulder or United Methodist Church of Hygiene can be sent in care of Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, 326 Terry Street, Longmont, Colorado 80501.

Carl E. Lutz, 86, of Longmont died July 16, 2008 husband of Mary. Carl worked for Flatirons Paving retiring in 1987.

Sammy G. Applegate, 75, entered eternal rest on September 4, 2008.

Survived by his wife, Nina; son, Fred (Paulette) Lakewood; Cindy of Arvada; Stepson, Eric Johnson of Arlee, MT; grandchildren, Robert, Thomas, Steven and Matthew Applegate, Joshua and Kyndra Johnson; great-grandson, Ozzie and sister, Lorna Humphries of Pamona, CA.

Preceded in death by grandson Michael Dougherty.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 1-3 pm with services to follow at 3 pm. Both at Crown Hill Chapel of peace at 29th and Wadsworth, Wheat Ridge. Burial to follow at Crown Hill cemetery.

Nathan Peter Hrkman, Boulder, CO

Nathan Hrkman, 31, of Boulder, formerly of Pittsburgh, passed away Thursday, September 4, 2008.

Beloved son of Nicholas Hrkman and Karen Russo; stepson of Tom Connolly; dear brother of Nick, Sarah and Nicole Hrkman and his niece, Jordan Grace; and nephew of Tony (Becky) Russo.

A recent graduate of the University of Colorado, Nathan was a true friend to many people.

Visitation Wednesday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. William Slater II Funeral Service, 1650 Greentree Rd., Scott Twp. Mass of Christian burial Thursday 10 am St. Bernard Church.

Reverend Fr. Nicholas Dotson, Longmont, CO

Reverend Fr. Nicholas Dotson, 55, fell asleep in the Lord on September 12, 2008.

Born Scott Dotson, son of Scott and Nancy Dotson in Cañon City, CO, he obtained a M. Div. from St. Tikhon’s Seminary (1995) and took the name Nicholas upon ordination. He served for 17 years in the OCA and Greek Orthodox Archdiocese.

Fr. Nicholas loved baseball, Diet Coke, Starbucks coffee, and a good joke, and he will be remembered for his sense of humor and service to the Holy Orthodox Church.

He is survived by his wife Kedrann, sons Ryan and Nicholas, daughter Rebecca (Landon) Stewart, granddaughters Anastacia and Emily, mother Nancy Goulet, and brother Matthew.

Services: Wed. Sept. 17, viewing beginning at 4pm, Trisagion 7pm. Thurs. Sept. 18 Orthros 9am, Divine Liturgy 10am, then funeral service, followed by luncheon.

All services at Sts. Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church (5640 Jay Road, Boulder, CO 80301). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Sts. Peter and Paul. Arrangements by Crist Mortuary.

Eddie "Coach" Crowder

1931 - 2008

Born: August 26, 1931 (Arkansas City, Kansas)
Raised in Muskogee, Okla. (Muskogee Central High School graduate)
Resident of Boulder for 45-plus years (1963 until his death on Sept. 9, 2008)

Eddie spent four years at the University of Oklahoma with his time there producing a degree in Geology, a national championship in football and being named an All-America quarterback. After a season of professional football in Canada, he spent two years as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army. The second year of duty was as quarterbacks coach at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.

Upon completing his tour of duty, he returned to the University of Oklahoma as an assistant coach under his college head coach, the legendary Bud Wilkinson. After seven years and two more national championships at OU, Eddie was named head coach at the University of Colorado at the age of 31 on January 3, 1963. Two years later, the university added the job of athletic director in addition to his duties as coach. He soon would be named the Coach of the Year in the Big Eight Conference and Sportsman of the Year in Colorado. He was inducted into the State of Colorado Sports Hall of Fame, the state of Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame and the University of Colorado Athletic Hall of Fame.

Eddie passed away from complications due to leukemia. He was 77.

He is survived by his wife, Kate Crowder, his daughter, Carol Crowder, his granddaughters Stephanie D’Angelo, Julie D’Angelo, grandson Trevor James, his son, Mike Crowder, stepchildren Rebecca and David Roman, and daughter-in-law Janice Coen.

His parents, two brothers and his son Robert preceded him in death.

A celebration of Coach Ed’s life will be held this afternoon at 2 p.m. at Folsom Field, on the club level on the east side of the stadium (take the elevators between gates 8 and 9 to the Fifth Floor. Parking will be available around the stadium and in Lot 436 near Colorado Avenue and Regent Drive.

In lieu of flowers, the family has established the Eddie Crowder Football Scholarship Fund at both his beloved universities, Colorado and Oklahoma.

James Patrick Ryan, Longmont, CO

1933 - 2008

James Patrick Ryan, of Longmont, died Saturday, September 6, 2008 at his home. He was 75.

Mr. Ryan was born March 3, 1933 in Buffalo, New York, the son of Patrick and Margaret (Quinn) Ryan. Jim married Myra Fleming and they later divorced. On July 29, 1972 he married Dawn Lankow Pascarella in Buffalo. They moved to Longmont in 2000.

Jim was a foreman for National Fuel Gas where he worked for most of his career. He retired in 1994. Jim served two terms of active duty in the United States Navy during the Korean conflict.

Jim was a member of the Niwot United Methodist Church and belonged to the IBEW. After his retirement, Jim spent as much time as he could with his family and grandchildren. He was a fan of the Buffalo Bills, enjoyed the mountains, camping, woodworking, and playing all sports. He also enjoyed his faithful companion dog, Lucy.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife Dawn; three sons: Jim Ryan and his wife Lisa of Sparta, New Jersey, Mike Ryan of Boulder and Eric Horan of Denver; four daughters: Julie Gorlewski and her husband Dave of Buffalo, New York, Kathy Grieble and her husband Scott of Lafayette, Vicki Hankey and her husband Pete of Erie, and Zoeann Ryan of Lancaster, New York; 14 grandchildren: Jeff, Jake, Jon and Jennie Heisler, Keegan, Wyatt, and Riley Grieble, Becka and Allie Hankey, Maggie and Katie Ryan, Alex, Mason, and Michael Ryan; and one sister, Katherine Ertel of Buffalo, New York.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, September 13 at 4:00 p.m. at the Niwot United Methodist Church. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Howe Mortuary and Cremation Services.

Mary Domenica Perrella, Louisville, CO

1907 - 2008

Mary Domenica Perrella, 100, of Louisville died September 7, 2008.

She was born December 29, 1907 to James Forte and Carmella Massaro Forte of Lafayette. On June 13, 1939 she married Anthony V. Perrella. After high school she attended Colorado Teachers College in Greeley, teaching 9 years in Louisville and 2 years in Boulder Public School. While living in Cheyenne, Wyoming she was head of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine for 15 years.

Survivors include her son Anthony J. Perrella, daughter in law Pamela, granddaughter Kathleen Pistolesi and husband Jim, and great grandson Dante Pistolesi of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Visitation will be Thursday September 11 from 5-7pm at Darrell Howe Mortuary, 1701 W South Boulder Road, Lafayette, with Rosary at 7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said on Friday September 12 at 10am at St. Louis Catholic Church in Louisville. Internment with her husband will be in Sacred Heart of Mary Cemetery.
