Loree Cooley

Sept. 10, 1912 - July 26, 2006

Loree Cooley, of Boulder, died of natural causes Wednesday, July 26, 2006, at Lakewood Meridian Nursing Home. She was 93.

The daughter of Ray C. Hinkhouse and Mary Edith Truesdell Hinkhouse, she was born Sept. 10, 1912, in Palco, Kan. She married Wayne Cooley in 1952 in Boulder.

Mrs. Cooley moved to Boulder in the early 1950s.

She was a teacher and homemaker.

Survivors include one daughter, Kathryn Craig, of New Castle; a sister, Olive Deapen, of St. Helena, Calif.; and two granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother.

Services have been held. Interment is at Wildhorse Township Cemetery in Bogue, Kan.

Contributions in Mrs. Cooley's name may be made to Fort Hays State University's Department of English or the Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University, and sent care of Stinemetz Funeral Home, 522 N. Pomeroy Ave., Hill City, KS 67642.

Isabel E. Beck

Nov. 14, 1910 - June 18, 2006

Isabel E. Beck, of Aurora, formerly of Boulder, died of natural causes Sunday, June 18, 2006, at Garden Terrace Alzheimer's Center in Aurora. She was 95.

The daughter of Thomas O'Brien and Margaret Harrold, she was born Nov. 14, 1910, in Palmer, Iowa. She married Raymond C. Beck on Aug. 30, 1935, in Pocahontas, Iowa. He died in 1973.

Mrs. Beck lived in Boulder from 1954 to 2002.

An Iowa College of Cosmetology graduate, she owned and operated Broadway Beauty Salon in Boulder.

She was a member of the Elks Ladies, Sacred Heart of Jesus Altar & Rosary Society and the Newcomers Club.

She enjoyed playing bridge, cooking, traveling, bowling and dancing.

Survivors include one daughter, Linda R. Miller, of Denver; and a brother, Matt O'Brien, of Warwick, N.Y.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Lucille Anderson, of Arizona, and Gen McCarten, of Kansas.

A private family service has been held.

Joan Marie Lowry Willson

May 3, 1940 - July 24, 2006

Joan Marie Lowry Willson, of Longmont, died of cancer Monday, July 24, 2006, at the Life Care Center of Longmont. She was 66.

The daughter of Hersey Largent and Evelyn Smith Largent, she was born May 3, 1940, in Paw Paw, W.Va. She married Charles Lowry. They divorced. She married Kenneth Willson Jr. in 1981 in Boulder.

Mrs. Willson moved to Longmont in 1986.

A high school graduate and homemaker, she started a career as a secretary after her children grew up. She became an office manager and corporate secretary before opening her home-based business as a bookkeeper.

She was a member of Faith Community Lutheran Church in Longmont and enjoyed taking care of her family, reading and working in her rose garden.

Throughout the 1970s, Mrs. Willson was a facilitator for the PM (previously married) Group at Mount St. Francis in Colorado Springs.

"She maintains great friendships with some of the people she met there and considers those years of helping others some of the most memorable of her life, " her family said.

Survivors include her husband, of Longmont; two daughters, Dawn Elliott, of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Kelly Corbett, of Ventura, Calif.; five sons, Chuck Lowry, of Costa Mesa, Calif., Jeff Lowry, of Walls, Miss., Patrick Lowry, of Creston, Iowa, Mike Lowry, of Fort Worth, Texas, and Shawn Lowry, of Earlville, Ill.; one stepdaughter, Cindy Pierce, of Mead; two stepsons, David Willson and Mark Willson, both of Longmont; a brother, Max Largent, of Fairbanks, Alaska; a sister, Shirley Netzer, of Pasadena, Md.; 18 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ron Largent and Ken Largent; and a sister, Margaret "Peggy" Horvath.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Faith Community Lutheran Church, 9775 Ute Highway, Longmont. Pastor Dan Hansen will officiate.

Private inurnment will be at Mountain View Memorial Park in Boulder.

Elberta Rebecca Chase Harkins

March 9, 1909 - July 23, 2006

Elberta Rebecca Chase Harkins, of Boulder, died of natural causes Sunday, July 23, 2006, in Boulder. She was 97.

The daughter of Frank E. Chase and Julia Conrad Chase, she was born March 9, 1909, in Clifton. She married Glenn Bennie Harkins on Feb. 22, 1930, in Des Moines, Iowa.

Mrs. Harkins moved to Boulder in 1989.

A graduate of Guthrie Center High School in Iowa, she attended Drake University in Des Moines and taught elementary school for 48 years. She started at one-room country schools in Guthrie County, Iowa, before going to Guthrie Center Elementary.

Mrs. Harkins was a Noble Grand in the Rebecca Lodge, president of the American Legion Auxiliary and head of the Methodist Youth Fellowship and choir in Guthrie Center. She was also a member of a ladies' bridge club and the Do Your Own Thing club.

An author and storyteller, she enjoyed arts and crafts, painting, poetry, flowers, nature, music, shopping and garage sales.

"Elberta, named after the peach, was creative and colorful in her personality, choice of clothes, jewelry and décor, " her family said. "Her vibrant smile and gentle, loving nature drew young and old to her. She loved the hard-to-love, bringing out the best in those around her."

Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn Harkins, of Boulder; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Robert Harkins; two granddaughters, Tracey Harkins and Vanessa Izzolena; and four siblings.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at LifeBridge Christian Church, 10345 Ute Highway, Longmont. David Bradshaw will officiate.

Richard Strong, of Boulder, died Friday, June 9, 2006, at Boulder Community Hospital. He was 77. Arrangements are pending under the direction of M.P. Murphy & Associates Funeral Directors in Boulder.

Robert D. Sneddon

April 2, 1934 - June 10, 2006

Robert D. Sneddon, a lifelong resident of Louisville, died of lung disease Saturday, June 10, 2006, in Louisville. He was 72.

The son of James M. Sneddon and Olive R. Clark Sneddon, he was born April 2, 1934, in Louisville. He married Margaret Dover on July 19, 1958, in Louisville. They divorced.

He worked for Public Service Company of Colorado for 32 years. Mr. Sneddon enjoyed fishing, hunting, sports and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include two daughters, Alyson Sneddon and Heather Sargent, both of Encampment, Wyo., and two granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Emajane Enrietto.

A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at Louisville Cemetery, Colo. 42 and Empire Road, Louisville.

Lois Regina Wescott

Aug. 21, 1916 - May 29, 2006

Lois Regina Wescott, of Boulder, died of pulmonary disease Monday, May 29, 2006, in Boulder. She was 89.

The daughter of Roy Russell Wescott and Geneva Evangeline Moolick Wescott, she was born Aug. 21, 1916, in Hampton, Iowa.

Ms. Wescott moved to Boulder in 1958.

She earned a bachelor's degree in geology from the University of Iowa in 1941, and did master's work in geology at the University of Denver.

She worked as a geology graduate assistant at DU from 1941 to 1943, a geologist for Atlantic Refining Co. in the southwest United States from 1943 to 1948, a geologist for Mini Grande Oil Co. in Venezuela from 1948 to 1950, a geologist in New Orleans from 1950 to 1953, geologic editor for the U.S. Geological Survey in Japan from 1953 to 1955, a science editor for the Colorado School of Mines from 1955 to 1958 and a science technician at the National Bureau of Science and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration from 1958 to 1980.

A member of the Boulder Genealogical Society and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Ms. Wescott earned awards for volunteer work in early Boulder genealogical records and for publishing the "Canyon Pointe Chronicles."

She enjoyed genealogy, geology, the English language, humor and traveling.

"She was tolerant and had a witty sense of humor, " her family said. "She was a woman pioneer in geology and traveled extensively."

Survivors include one daughter, Thyria Kathleen Wilson, of Denver; and a brother, Eugene M. Wescott, of Fairbanks, Alaska.

Leon C. Colard

Aug. 18, 1931 - July 28, 2006

Leon C. Colard, of Lyons, died of natural causes Friday, July 28, 2006, at his home. He was 74.

The son of Arthur Colard and Annie Haug Colard, he was born Aug. 18, 1931, in Longmont. He married Mary Louise Kehm on Nov. 1, 1952, in Lafayette.

Mr. Colard spent most of his life on the family ranch near Lyons, and he attended school in Lyons.

A decorated veteran, he served in Korea with the U.S. Army's 92nd Armed Field Artillery Battalion from 1952 to 1955.

Mr. Colard had several careers, including ranching, real estate development and agricultural and residential water well development. His projects included Spring Gulch Ranch Estates, Lyons Pump, Beech Hill Water District and the Yarmouth development in Boulder.

He enjoyed horses, hunting and working. He also enjoyed visiting with people, and telling stories and jokes.

"Leon had a great sense of humor and loved to play, " the family said. "The love of his life was his beautiful bride Mary Lou and his family. He was a born leader, a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a wonderful friend to many."

Survivors include his wife, of Lyons; three daughters, Terry Johnson, of Milliken, and Cindy Tilson and Rhonda Hirschfeld, both of Lyons; two brothers, Bob Colard, of Lyons, and Ray Colard, of Fort Collins; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Howe Mortuary, 439 Coffman St., Longmont.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the mortuary chapel, with David Bradshaw officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Lyons Cemetery.

Mabel Adel D'Angelo

March 3, 1918 - July 23, 2006

Mabel Adel D'Angelo, of Louisville, died of natural causes Sunday, July 23, 2006, in Broomfield. She was 84.

The daughter of John Winfelt and Rose Wertig, she was born March 3, 1918, in Marshfield, Wis. She married Leonard D'Angelo on Feb. 3, 1940, in New York City.

Mrs. D'Angelo lived in Louisville from 2000 until her death.

"She was a devoted Catholic, " her family said. "She was dearly loved and will be missed."

Survivors include a son, Alan D'Angelo, of Louisville; a daughter, Suzanne Shaughnessy, of Wisconsin; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a sister, Velma Pryse; and a son, Lenny D'Angelo.

No services are planned, and interment will be private.

Avalon Funeral Home in Lafayette is handling arrangements.
