Patsy was entering beauty contests by the time she reached high school, and was named first runner-up in the Miss Teenage West Virginia contest while a sophomore at Parkersburg High. In 1977, she was crowned Miss West Virginia.

Competing in the Miss America pageant, Patsy won one of eight non-finalist talent awards and a $2, 000 scholarship, which she used while attending West Virginia University.

As a senior there, she headed the Student Services Committee, was membership chairman for Alpha Xi Delta sorority and made the dean's list. She graduated with a degree in journalism, with a concentration in advertising.

Patsy met John Ramsey in Atlanta, and the two were married Nov. 15, 1980. They had two children: Burke, born in 1987, and JonBenet, born in 1990.

Friends say after being reared in the South, Patsy had difficulty adapting to Boulder when the family moved to Colorado in 1991. But she was known for lavish parties and showing off the family's 15-room home in the Chautauqua neighborhood.

In 1993, Patsy was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and became deeply religious when the disease went into remission. Her mother says Patsy believed she was cured by divine healing.

The family moved to Atlanta in 1997, several months after JonBenet was slain in their Boulder home.

Patsy's cancer recurred in 2002, and again in March 2005. She died Saturday at her father's home in Roswell, Ga., with her husband at her side.

She will be buried next to JonBenet in St. James Cemetery at Marietta, Ga. Services are scheduled for Thursday.
