Kiley Laine Duran

Funeral services for Kiley Laine Duran, 12, will be held Tuesday, March 21, at the Mancos Performance Center beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Rev. Jerry Boles of the Dove Creek United Methodist Church will officiate.

Kiley was born in Durango, on Feb. 14, 1988. She is the daughter of Sherri Lynett (Trevino) Duran and Bert Eugene Sanders. Kiley passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Friday, March 17, 2000 as the result of an accident.

A student at Mancos Middle School, Kiley was very involved in school life. She was a cheerleader, played soccer, basketball, and participated in track events. She played the flute and loved to read. Kiley loved fashion and dressing in her own special way.

Kiley leaves behind her mother, Sherri Duran, of Mancos; her dad, Johnnie Robert Duran, of Cortez; stepmother, Misti Duran, of Cortez; her brother, Corey Robert Duran, of Mancos; grandparents, Mr. andMrs. Johnny E. Duran, of Cortez, Mr. & Mrs. Jerry Trevino, of Mancos, and Mr. & Mrs. Jim Lane, of Dallas, Texas; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Kiley Duran at the Mancos Valley Bank for the construction of a pedestrian overpass on U.S. Highway 160 in Mancos.

Services will be under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.

Lisa Clarredge

Private family services will be held at a later date for Lisa Lee Clarridge, a resident of Mancos.

Mrs. Clarridge passed away at her home on Thursday, March 16, 2000. She was born in Long Beach, Calif., on Aug. 9, 1966, to Larry Cozart and Barbara (Gaines) Cozart. Lisa was 33 years old at the time of her death.

Lisa gave her time as a volunteer at the Mancos Community Center and at the Mancos Elementary School.

Surviving Lisa is her husband, Bob Clarridge, of Mancos; her daughter, Charise "CeCe" Clarridge, of Mancos; and her son, Garret Clarridge, also of Mancos. Her parents, Larry and Barbara Cozart, of Anaheim, Calif., also survive Lisa, as do her sister, Annett Cozart, of Anaheim, Calif.; her brother, Luke Cozart, of Huntington Beach, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Arrangements are being handled through the Ertel Funeral Home.

Levi Fewel "L.F." Garrett, Jr.

Memorial services for Levi Fewel "L.F." Garrett, Jr., a longtime Mancos resident, will be held Friday, March 17, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 2:00 p.m. Reverends Bud Rousset and Ora Dailey will officiate.

Levi was born in Kansas City, Kans., to Levi Fewel Garrett and Edna Pearl (Stevenson) Garrett on June 8, 1921. He passed away at the Vista Grande Nursing Home in Cortez on Tues., March 14, 2000. Levi was 78 years old.

On March 19, 1941, Levi married Margaret Ann Sigler in Kansas City, Mo. Levi and Marge were days short of celebrating their 59th anniversary. After moving to the Mancos Valley 20 years ago, Levi became very active in community affairs both in Mancos and Cortez. He was very active in the Mancos VFW, Shriners, Pueblo Community College, the Montezuma County Economic Development committee, and the Senior Center, to name just a few of the activities that Levi gave his energies to.

Surviving Levi is his wife, Marge, of Mancos; his son, Curtis Fewel Garrett, of Denver; and his daughter and son-in-law, Sheryl and Vic Bruce, of Dolores; four grandchildren, Stacey Baxter, of Portland, Ore., Brian Bruce, of Phoenix, Ariz., Heather Garrett, of Mississippi, and Heidi Garrett, of Grand Junction, Colo.; two great-grandchildren, Cole and Leah Baxter, of Portland, Ore.; and a sister, Helen Deyen, of Colorado Springs, Colo. A sister, Dolores Overhelman, preceded Levi in death.

Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Levi Garrett with the Citizens State Bank of Cortez to benefit the Shriners Children's Hospital. Ertel Funeral Home will be conducting the services.

Anna Mehesy

Anna Mehesy, a resident of Cortez, passed away on March 15, 2000, at Southwest Memorial Hospital at the age of 87. Graveside services are scheduled at the Cortez Cemetery on Friday, March 17, at 1 p.m. Pastor Kent Slyter of Arriola Bible church will officiate. All friends are invited to attend.

Anna was born on Sept. 22, 1912, in Hopelawn, N.J., and has lived in Cortez the past five years. She was retired from Woolworth’s Department Store. She is survived by three sons: Robert of New Jersey, Jacob of California, and Joseph of Dolores. She has eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Anna enjoyed her friends at the Cortez Park Apartments, the Senior Center and the ladies "Love Fellowship" at the Arriola Bible Church. Her vitality and zest for life will be remembered and missed by all. Memorial donations may be made in her honor to the Christian Discipleship Center, 24826 Road L, Cortez.

The Cortez Four Corners Funeral Chapel, Hale and Gerken Funeral Directors, are serving the family.

Donna Joy Dodson

Donna Joy Dodson was born Sept. 15, 1949 in Lubbock, Texas. She passed away March 14, 2000 in Greeley, Colo. Memorial services will be held on Friday, March 17 at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 515 N. Park Street, Cortez.

Donna was a member of the Cancer Support Group in Greeley. She is survived by her children, Ryan and Ashley Staats; her mother, Ena R. Dodson-Kermode; sisters, Sandy Morrison and Debra Dodson-Randall; brother, Paul A. Dodson; niece, Kelli McAllister; nephew, Sheldon Randall; and many aunts and uncles.

Her father, Paul Miles Dodson, preceded her in death.

A memorial fund for the benefit of Donna’s children has been set up at Vectra Bank, Cortez.

Winnie Sparra

Memorial services for longtime Cortez resident, Winnie B. Sparra, will be held Monday, March 20, at the Ute Mountain American Legion Hall beginning at 7 p.m. A reminiscing period was held at Ertel Funeral Home Friday afternoon so that friends could come and sign the register book and reminisce their friendship with Winnie.

Winnie was born in Hoover, Texas, on Sept. 29, 1914. She was the daughter of Michael Weldon Cornett and Ruby (Shelton) Cornett. She passed away at the Vista Grande Nursing Home on Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at the age of 85.

Serving as president at one time of the American Legion Auxiliary, Winnie was always very active within the Auxiliary. Winnie acted as the Bingo Caller at the Vista Grande Nursing Home.

Winnie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sharon N. and Lewis Reams, of Borger, Texas; two grandsons, Michael Jack Reams, of Amarillo, Texas, and Ivan Scott Reams, of Fritch, Texas; a great granddaughter, Breanna Reams, of Fritch, Texas; and a great grandson, Weston Reams, also of Fritch.

Winnie's husband, Walter Leigh Sparra, preceded her in death in 1974.

Memorial contributions may be made in Winnie Sparra's name with the Ute Mountain American Legion Post #75 to benefit their building fund.

Ertel Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Jessie A. Kidd

Jessie A. Kidd of Mesa Ariz., passed away on March 14, 200, in Mesa. Services are set for 1 p.m. Friday, March 17 at the First Southern Baptist Church, 851 B. Stapley Drive. Interment will take place in the Mesa City Cemetery.

Jessie Kidd was born in Globe, Ariz., and worked in agriculture as a bookkeeper.

She is survived by her son, James Kidd of Cortez; daughter, Gloria L. Dixon of Pinetop; sisters, Mary Riggs, of Mesa; Edna Shueler, also of Mesa; and Ruth Trevellkn, of Show Low, Ariz.; her brother, Thomas Malone, also of Show Low; 14 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

Bobby Joe Daves

Funeral services for lifelong Dove Creek resident, Bobby Joe Daves, will be held Thursday, March 16, at the Dolores County High School Memorial Hall beginning at 1 p.m. Rev. Jonathan Bland of the New Hope Christian Ministries will officiate.

Bobby Joe was born Feb. 23, 1959, in Cortez, the son of James Floyd Daves and Glennis Ardena (Atkinson) Daves. He passed away in rural Dolores County on Thursday March 9, 2000. He was 41 years old.

Bobby Joe leaves behind a large and loving family to mourn his death. He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Johns) Daves, of Dove Creek; and three daughters, Amber Daves, Autumn Daves, and Ashley Daves, all of Dove Creek. Also surviving are his brothers and sisters and their spouses; his mother-in-law; a brother-in-law and his wife; two sisters-in-law and their spouses; an aunt; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Bobby Joe was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Sue Dunagan; and his father-in-law, Adolph Johns.

Memorial contributions can be made in Bobby Joe Daves memory to the Dove Creek State Bank for the Margaret Daves account. A memorial fund in his name has also been one set up at Vectra Bank, main branch. Ertel Funeral Home will be conducting the services.

Lem Duncan

Lem Duncan, a resident of the Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango, passed away March 12, 2000. He was 92 years old. He was born in Cortez Dec. 30, 1907 to Cortez pioneers John T. and Catherine J. Duncan.

He graduated from Cortez High School and married Harriet Kirk in 1926.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a son, Harold; infant son, Charles; granddaughter, Gayle Duncan; sisters, Marguerite, Lottie and Edna; and brother, Charles.

Survivors include two daughters, Connie Christenson, of Aurora, Colo.; Jody Armstrong of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Thelma of Lakeside, Calif.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Cremation has been arranged, with private services at a later date. Memorials may be sent to the charity of your choice,

Evelyn Ethyl Johnson

Graveside services for Evelyn Ethyl Johnson, a longtime resident of this area, will be held Friday, March 17, at the Cortez Cemetery beginning at 10 a.m. Visitation will be held at the Ertel Memorial Chapel on Thursday afternoon between the hours of noon and 5 p.m.

Evelyn was born in Barnes, Kans., on July 10, 1913, to Eugene Orval and Grace Pearl (Finley) Johnson. She passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Monday, March 13, 2000, at the age of 86.

Surviving Evelyn are two sisters, Eugenia Fosnot, of Cahone, and Helen Guynes, of Dove Creek;and her brother, Eugene E. Johnson, also of Cahone. Ertel Funeral Home is in charge of the services.

Herman H. Turner

Herman H. Turner, a lifelong resident of this area, passed away in the Albuquerque Heart Hospital in Albuquerque, N.M. He was 68.

Herman was born on Aug. 14, 1931 in Dublin, Texas, to Hirschel and Margaret Chamblee Turner. He graduated from McPhee Elementary School.

Herman married Marie Zittle on Dec. 29, 1991 in Las Vegas, Nev. He was the former owner of the Dolores Shell station in the late 1960s. Herman also worked as a mechanic for several garages in our area. Before his retirement, he drove trucks across the country. In his earlier years, he enjoyed fishing and hunting. Herman also enjoyed telling jokes.

Mr. Turner was a member of Mason Lodge #133 of Cortez, a member of the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, S.J. USA Colorado Springs-Pueblo; a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter #87, Cortez; a former captain of the VFD in Dolores, and a former town board member in Dolores.

Herman Turner is survived by his mother, Margaret of Cortez; wife, Marie of Cortez; sons Terry (Cathy) of Cortez; Skip Glassel (Tracy) of Fruita, Colo.; and Mike Glassel of Grand Junction, Colo.; daughters Jennifer (Patrick) Martinez of Albuquerque and Daisy Zittle of Abbeville, Ala. He is also survived by brothers, Bill Turner of Lewis and John (Roberta) Sturdevant of Dolores; sisters, Charley (Bob) Miller of Lewis and Colleen Turner of Mt. Pleasant, Texas; five grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and many friends.

Cremation has taken place, with a memorial service on March 15.
