Palmena M. DiCarlo

Jan. 16, 1933 - June 5, 2006

Palmena M. DiCarlo, a lifelong resident of Louisville, died of natural causes Monday, June 5, 2006, at Boulder Community Hospital. She was 73.

The daughter of Onorio Ferrera and Lucia Norci Ferrera, she was born Jan. 16, 1933, in Louisville. She married Eugene Anthony DiCarlo on Dec. 1, 1951, in Louisville.

A 1950 graduate of Louisville High School, Mrs. DiCarlo worked at Storage Technology Inc. for 14 years.

She enjoyed playing softball, baseball and football and spending time with her grandchildren.

"We love you, and will miss you, " her family said. "Although you may be gone, you will always be in our hearts."

Survivors include her husband, of Louisville; two sons, Gene Allan DiCarlo and Dino Anthony DiCarlo, both of Louisville; two daughters, Paula Ann Elrod and Karen Marie DiCarlo, both of Louisville; and four grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday at Avalon Funeral Home, 1320 Centaur Village Drive, Lafayette.

A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Louis Catholic Church, 902 Grant Ave., Louisville.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, with interment to follow at Louisville Cemetery, Colo. 42 and Empire Road, Louisville.

BYRON ARTHUR BOVILLE

Dr. Byron Arthur Boville, of Louisville, died Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at his residence. He was 52. Funeral arrangements are pending under the direction of M.P. Murphy and Associates Funeral Directors.

ANNABEL HUSTVEDT

Annabel Hustvedt, of Boulder, died of natural causes Tuesday, June 6, 2006, in Boulder. She was 87. Services are pending under the direction of Crist Mortuary in Boulder.

Dennis Lee Ludwig

July 3, 1946 - June 4, 2006

Dennis Lee Ludwig, of Boulder, died of internal bleeding Sunday, June 4, 2006, in Boulder. He was 59.

The son of Lenard Ludwig and Gladys Marie Johnson Ludwig, he was born July 3, 1946, in Yankton, S.D.

Mr. Ludwig moved to Boulder in 1979.

He earned a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from South Dakota State University and owned Ludwig Pharmacy in Boulder for 25 years. He recently worked for Walgreens pharmacy in Boulder.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1970 to 1973 as a captain and earned an Accommodation Medal from the Army.

An active member and former president of National Community Pharmacists Association, Mr. Ludwig was a member of Rx Plus, Colorado Pharmacists Association and Atonement Lutheran Church. He earned the Bowl of Hygeia and a Distinguished Coloradoan Award.

He enjoyed golf, skiing, politics, storytelling, sports, car-collecting and being with his family.

"He loved his Ford Bronco, " the family said.

Survivors include three daughters, Christina Ludwig and Sonja Ludwig, both of Denver, and Jennifer Hufford, of Windsor; two sons, Jon Ludwig, of Federal Heights, and Eric Ludwig, of Westminster; a brother, Robert Ludwig, of Iowa; and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Crist Mortuary, 3395 Penrose Place, Boulder.

A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Atonement Lutheran Church, 685 Inca Parkway, Boulder. Interment will follow at Mountain View Memorial Park, 3016 Kalmia Ave., Boulder.

Charlotte Elaine Cox Haynes

Jan. 28, 1918 - June 3, 2006

Charlotte Elaine Cox Haynes, of Boulder, died of congestive heart failure Saturday, June 3, 2006, in Boulder. She was 88.

The daughter of Warren E. Cox and Floy May Davidson Cox, she was born Jan. 28, 1918, in Winamac, Ind. She married Robert L. Haynes on June 2, 1945, in Indianapolis. He died in 1988.

Mrs. Haynes moved to Boulder in 1961.

A 1938 graduate of Butler University in Indianapolis, she earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry and was a homemaker.

She was a member of First Christian Church in Boulder, a charter member of the Boulder Chorale, past president of Church Women United in Boulder and past president of The Woman's Club of Boulder.

She enjoyed church activities, singing, gardening, reading and hiking.

Survivors include one son, Paul Haynes, of Boulder, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Atonement Lutheran Church, 685 Inca Parkway, Boulder. The Rev. Terry L. Zimmerman will officiate.

Contributions in memory of Mrs. Haynes may be sent to First Christian Church, 950 28th St., Boulder, CO 80302.

William Hurson Bennett
Jan. 23, 1916 - May 31, 2006

William Hurson Bennett, formerly of Rollinsville, died of natural causes Wednesday, May 31, 2006, in Boulder. He was 90.

He was born Jan. 23, 1916, in Manchester, N.H. A marriage ended in divorce.

Mr. Bennett served as a medic in the South Pacific during World War II.

He lived in Rollinsville for more than 30 years as a cook and caretaker at Camp Shoshoni. He later cooked for an art school in Black Hawk.

Survivors include two sons, Richard Bennett and Jeffery Bennett.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Judith Bennett.

No services are planned. Mr. Bennett donated his body to science at the University of Colorado.

Crist Mortuary in Boulder is handling arrangements.

Karmen Aline Thompson

Nov. 11, 1939 - May 31, 2006

Karmen Aline Thompson, formerly of Boulder, died of a brain tumor Wednesday, May 31, 2006, in Lake Oswego, Ore. She was 66.

The daughter of Pent Everett and Helen Waisanen Everett, she was born Nov. 11, 1939, in Aberdeen, Wash. She married Lewis Effenberger in 1961. They divorced, and she married architect Bari Thompson in 1977.

Mrs. Thompson lived in Boulder for 27 years before moving to Oregon in 1993. She attended the University of Washington and earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Colorado in 1974.

"Karmen was a well-known and gifted artist and illustrator whose lifelong passion for drawing and painting began in childhood, " her family said. "Karmen will be greatly missed by all who knew her."

She created posters for the Denver Center Theater Company, Colorado Shakespeare Festival and Boulder Parks and Recreation Department. She illustrated numerous books for children, including collaborations with Ann Hayes, Boulder poet Aileen Fisher and Yoko Tamaki Brandt. She also enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Keith Effenberger, of Lafayette; two daughters, Pauline Chapman, of Lafayette, and Riva Sweetrocket, of Denver; a twin sister, Karen Springer, of Bellevue, Wash.; and a brother, Laurie Jarvela, of Kingston, Wash.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Avery Chapman.

A memorial service is planned in Oregon on June 25. A service in Boulder will be announced later.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the family to help erect a memorial bench. Questions may be directed to Pauline Chapman at (303) 604-9652.

Sol Brautigam

May 5, 1915 - June 4, 2006

Sol Brautigam, of Aurora, formerly of Boulder, died of pneumonia Sunday, June 4, 2006, in Greenwood Village. He was 91.

The son of George Brautigam and Katherine Brungardt Brautigam, he was born May 5, 1915, in McCook, Neb. He married Amelia Jane Schlothauer on Dec. 15, 1940, in Fort Morgan. She died in 2004.

Mr. Brautigam lived in Boulder from 1959 to 1978.

A graduate of George Washington University, he served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II and earned a Purple Heart.

He worked as an administrative officer at the National Bureau of Standards, now the National Institute of Standards and Technology, in Boulder.

Mr. Brautigam was a member of Elks Club, Eastern Star and the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include one daughter, Karen Mandry, of Sylmar, Calif.; one son, Alan R. Brautigam, of Aurora; two brothers, George Brautigam, of Loveland, and Adam Brautigam, of Pueblo West; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Baumgartner; and three brothers, Paul Brautigam, Henry Brautigam and Fred Brautigam.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Mountain View United Methodist Church, 355 Ponca Place, Boulder.

A funeral servic ewill follow at 11 a.m. at the church. The Rev. Walter Strickland will officiate. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Fort Logan National Cemetery, 3698 S. Sheridan Blvd., Denver.

Jack Oden Robinson

March 28, 1921 - June 1, 2006

Jack Oden Robinson, of Boulder, died of natural causes Thursday, June 1, 2006, in Lafayette. He was 85.

The son of Lyle Allen Robinson and Lillian Oden Robinson, he was born March 28, 1921, in Livingston, Mont. He married Betty Studebaker in 1941 in Walla Walla, Wash. They divorced. He married WeeLaNee Hayden Ford in 1946 in Las Vegas. She died in 1986. He married Trudy Krutsche in 1998 in Las Vegas.

Mr. Robinson moved to Boulder in 1946.

He served as a flight officer in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1941 to 1946, flying C-46s over "The Hump" from India and Burma over the Himalayan Mountains to China. He received a European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, an American Campaign Medal and a World War II Victory Medal.

After moving to Boulder, Mr. Robinson worked as a shoe salesman, a radio station announcer for KBOL and an insurance agent. He graduated from the University of Colorado in 1948 and worked as an insurance executive until earning a juris doctorate at the University of Connecticut Law School in 1971. He practiced law in Boulder until retiring in 2002.

Mr. Robinson served on the board of the Mental Health Center of Boulder County for nine years, and volunteered for Dental Aid, RSVP, Boulder County Legal Services and Boulder Senior Foundation. He was named the Boulder County Senior Volunteer of the Year for 2000.

He enjoyed traveling, reading, playing cards with his friends and sharing his sense of humor.

Survivors include his wife, of Boulder; one daughter Gale Skala, of Las Vegas; three sons, Kim Robinson, of Whiteriver, Ariz., Scott Robinson, of Mexico City, and Jack Ford, of Boulder; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held.

Contributions in Mr. Robinson's name may be sent to the Mental Health Center of Boulder County, 1333 Iris Ave., Boulder, CO 80304.

Leigh Welles

July 29, 1932 - June 8, 2006

Leigh Welles, of Boulder, died of natural causes Thursday, June 8, 2006, at her home. She was 73.

The daughter of George L. Stemmler and Elda Buddecke, she was born July 29, 1932, in St. Louis, Mo. She married Boyce Meyer in 1954 in St. Louis. They divorced.

Mrs. Welles moved to Boulder in 2004.

She owned Madison Ballet School in New York City, where she taught thousands of students, including Mikhail Baryshnikov.

Mrs. Welles was trained by Madame Cassan, who was the only teacher trained by Anna Pavlova, her family said. She was a soloist in Ballet Rousse in London from 1950 to 1952.

Also an author and spokeswoman, Mrs. Welles enjoyed writing, gardening, cooking and the Enneagram.

"She inspired everyone with her eagerness and willingness to evolve and grow, " the family said. "She always said, 'You are never too old, and it is never too late to unfold the true essence of your person within.'"

Survivors include one son, Eric Meyer, of New Canaan, Conn.; one daughter, Hope Welles Meyer, of Boulder; and four grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the family home, 4154 Pleasant Ridge Road, Boulder.
