Yoshio "Mochi" Mochizuki
Jan. 25, 1943 - March 28, 2006
Yoshio "Mochi" Mochizuki, of Boulder, died of cancer Tuesday, March 28, 2006, in Boulder. He was 63.
Born Jan. 25, 1943, in Tokyo, he moved to the United States in the early 1970s. He lived in Denver from the 1970s to 2000, when he moved to Boulder.
Mr. Mochizuki was a pioneer of Japanese cuisine in the Denver/Boulder area. Working at such restaurants as Kyoto, Zen and Sonoda's, his last position was as head chef at Sushi Zanmai/Amu Sake Bar in Boulder from 2000 to 2006.
"Mr. Mochizuki shared his passion for cuisine with co-workers and friends alike, " his colleagues said. "He was known to frequent local restaurants with his adoring 'daughters' and 'granddaughters, ' and will be deeply missed."
A memorial service will be at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday at Fairmount Mortuary Chapel, 430 S. Quebec St., Denver.

Jessica Louise Hogendorn
Feb. 23, 1967 - March 6, 2006
Jessica Louise Hogendorn, of Superior, died Monday, March 6, 2006, in Northglenn. She was 39.
The daughter of Tom Mohn and Mary Ellen Keenan Mohn, she was born Feb. 23, 1967, in La Crosse, Wis. She married Dominic Hogendorn on Dec. 12, 1987, in Lansing, Iowa.
Mrs. Hogendorn moved to Superior in 1999.
She earned an associate's degree in computer information systems from Western Wisconsin Technical College, and a bachelor's degree with high honors from Viterbo University in La Crosse. She was working on a master's degree at the University of Phoenix.
Mrs. Hogendorn worked at Intuit Eclipse in Boulder, and was a corporate executive manager in the software industry in La Crosse.
She enjoyed music and singing.
"A highly spiritual person who adored her beautiful children and was a wonderful daughter and friend, Jessica left a legacy of love for all who knew her, " her family said. "Her smile lit up the room."
Survivors include her parents, of Lansing; her husband, of Superior; two daughters, Nastazia Hogendorn and Makasha Hogendorn, both of Superior; and a son, Mikhail Hogendorn, of Superior.
Services have been held.

Hannah Nicole Bauer Boemker
June 15, 1989 - May 1, 2006
Hannah Nicole Bauer Boemker, of Lafayette, died in an automobile accident Monday, May 1, 2006, in Boulder. She was 16.
The daughter of Dennis R. Boemker and Cynde A. Bauer, she was born June 15, 1989, in Boulder.
She was a lifelong resident of Lafayette.
A junior at Boulder High School, Hannah worked at Golden West Assisted Living. She enjoyed pottery, photography, music, poetry, writing, psychology, spending time with friends and family, and the television program "Everwood."
"Hannah was an intense, passionate, caring and unique individual who loved people and learning, " her family said. "She gave all she had to everyone and everything. She could light up a room with her smile and spread joy with her laughter. She will be greatly missed by her loving extended family, her multitude of friends, and her soul mate, Mike Makowski."
Survivors include her parents, of Lafayette; a sister, Caitlin Boemker, of Lafayette; a brother, Ethan Boemker, of Lafayette; a grandmother, Pauline Boemker, of Thornton; and grandparents, Billie Bauer and Herm Bauer, of Morrison.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Robert. B. Boemker.
A celebration of life will be from noon to 4 p.m. at Chautauqua Park, 900 Baseline Road, Boulder.

Eloise M. 'Ellie' Allen
March 13, 1921 - April 29, 2006
Eloise M. "Ellie" Allen, of Boulder, died of natural causes Saturday, April 29, 2006, in Boulder. She was 85.
The daughter of James H. McCabe and Bertha Brown McCabe, she was born March 13, 1921, in Coke County, Texas. She married Fraser H. Allen on Dec. 23, 1943, in Sterling City, Texas. He died Jan. 18, 1997.
Mrs. Allen moved to Boulder in 1993.
She earned a bachelor's degree in liberal arts and a master's degree in bacteriology from the University of Texas.
She worked in the State Health Department in Austin, Texas, and as a laboratory instructor in the Bacteriology Department of the University of Texas. She also worked as a librarian in the Naval Research Laboratory in Anacostia, Md., during World War II.
Mrs. Allen was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, the Boulder Stamp Club and the First Presbyterian Sewing Circle.
Survivors include a daughter, Joanne Allen, of Boulder; two sons, Douglas Allen, of Steamboat Springs, and Stephen Allen, of Fort Collins; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Frasier Meadows Phillips Chapel, 350 Ponca Place, Boulder. A reception will follow.

Byron Arthur Boville
Aug. 25, 1953 - June 6, 2006
Byron Arthur Boville, of Louisville, died of cancer Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at his home. He was 52.
The son of Byron Walter Boville and Grace Mary Jolly, he was born Aug. 25, 1953, in Montréal, Québec, Canada. He married Barbara A. Bintliff in 1977 in Ellensburg, Wash. They divorced in 1992.
Mr. Boville moved to Boulder in 1979 and to Louisville in 1993.
After completing his bachelor's degree in meteorology with first-class honors at McGill University in Montréal, Mr. Boville completed his Ph.D. in atmospheric science at the University of Washington in Seattle.
He was a senior scientist in the climate modeling section at the National Center for Atmospheric Research.
Mr. Boville was a member of the American Geophysical Union, the American Meteorological Society and the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society. He served on national and international committees on climate and climate modeling and was winner of the 2005 Community Climate System Model Distinguished Achievement Award. Mr. Boville served as editor of the Journal of Geophysical Research.
An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Boville enjoyed white-water kayaking, camping, skiing, biking, hiking and playing Scrabble, and he loved to tango.
"After a valiant battle against cancer, he was taken from us too soon, " his family said.
Survivors include his partner, Marilyn Raphael, of Louisville; two sons, Bradley Boville and Bruce Boville, both of Boulder; two sisters, Susan Smylie and Jo-Anne Boville, both of Ontario, Canada; and his former wife, Barbara Bintliff, of Boulder.
A memorial servicewill be at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Tree Plaza, Mesa Lab, NCAR, 1850 Table Mesa Drive, Boulder. A reception will follow.

Grace I. Spier
Dec. 18, 1918 - June 2, 2006
Grace I. Spier, of Broomfield, died of natural causes Friday, June 2, 2006, at HospiceCare of Boulder and Broomfield Counties in Louisville. She was 87.
The daughter of Walter W. Giggey and Cynthia Shearer Giggey, she was born Dec. 18, 1918, in Boulder. She married Willard H. Spier on Sept. 26, 1940, in Sterling.
Mrs. Spier lived in Boulder until 1995, when she moved to Broomfield.
A 1937 graduate of State Preparatory High School in Boulder, she worked for the Boulder County Assessor's Office and Transamerica Title Insurance.
She was a member of the Elks and several card clubs.
She enjoyed exploring the mountains of Colorado, identifying wildflowers, sewing, drawing, traveling in the western United States, playing cards and spending time with her family.
Survivors include a son, Mark Spier, of Big Bend National Park, Texas; and three granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Rick Spier; a brother, Harry Giggey; and two sisters, Helen Jacobson and Thelma Seitzinger.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Gate-N-Green Community Clubhouse, 13405 Main St., Broomfield.

Evert V. Pierson
Nov. 8, 1909 - March 17, 2006
Evert V. Pierson, of Boulder, died of natural causes Friday, March 17, 2006, in Boulder. He was 96.
The son of Edward Pierson and Matilda Johnson Pierson, he was born Nov. 8, 1909, in Lafayette. He married Florence Yarberry on April 30, 1938, at First Christian Church in Boulder.
Mr. Pierson lived in Erie from birth until 1925, when he moved to Boulder.
A high school graduate, he served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945, in an anti-aircraft gunnery unit that participated in the invasion of Italy.
He was a postman in north Boulder from 1945 to 1972, when he retired.
A member of the Boulder Fish and Game Club and of the Boulder Elks Club for more than 50 years, Mr. Pierson was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer. The kids' ponds at Ninth Street and Canyon Boulevard in Boulder were named the Evert V. Pierson Kids Ponds in July 1999, in recognition of his service to the ponds and the community.
"He taught all of his nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces the meaning of giving back to the sports that have given you pleasure, " his family said.
Survivors include three nephews, George Hoos, of Boulder, Allen Hoos, of Oklahoma City, and David Hodge, of Loveland; three nieces, Jeanette Egan, of Northglenn, Beverly Dorfler, of Burgettstown, Pa., and Linda Bilyeu, of Meeteetse, Wyo.; 15 great-nephews and nieces; and 16 great-great-nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his wife; a brother, Carl Pierson; and two sisters, Edna Hoos and Elsa Brack.
A celebration of life will be at 10:30 a.m. June 17 at the home of George Hoos, 6053 Baseline Road, Boulder. Pastor Margot Wright will officiate. Interment will be at 9 a.m. June 19 at Green Mountain Cemetery, 290 20th St., Boulder.

Mary Kathryn Mathews
Sept. 2, 1918 - May 31, 2006
Mary Kathryn Mathews, of Boulder, died of natural causes Wednesday, May 31, 2006, in Boulder. She was 87.
The daughter of Millard Lawson and Marie Starnes Lawson, she was born Sept. 2, 1918, in Owen County, Ind. She married Atlee Mathews on Jan. 30, 1938, in Anderson, Ind.
Mrs. Mathews moved to Boulder in September 2000.
She and her husband owned and operated a grocery store in Castleton, Ind., for 23 years.
A member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Rebekahs, she enjoyed bowling, films and bingo.
"Mary was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, " her family said.
Survivors include one daughter, Sandra Rush, of Boulder; a sister, Betty Sue Lawson Lobraico, of Indianapolis; two grandsons; and two great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and two sisters.
Services will be held in Indianapolis.
