Gary Mammel, former bank chief, dies at 53
Gary Mammel, a former local banker known for his accessibility and wit, died Thursday in Denver after a battle with colon cancer. He was 53.
Mammel headed the Colorado Springs operations of what is now Wells Fargo Bank from 1991 to 1994, helping the bank through a merger of its holding company with Minneapolis-based Norwest Corp.
Despite heading the city's largest bank, he kept his office in the lobby where he could greet and meet customers.
"He was the kind of guy that made everyone feel important, " said Mike Edgar, who now heads Well Fargo's consumer operations in the Springs. "He had a nickname for everyone. Mine was Roy of the Ranchettes because I lived on a small ranch in Ellicott."
Mammel also was instrumental in the 1995 founding of the Center for Christian-Jewish Dialogue, where he served as a member of the group's board of directors until his death. He is the only recipient of the center's Torch of Faith Award, given to him in October. The group encourages understanding and respect of the faith, culture and history Jews and Christians share.
"The center certainly would not exist without him, " said Rabbi Howard Hirsch, president of the Colorado Springs-based center. "He could see through the clouds when no one else could. He was able to see the success of the center when a lot of people were casting doubt on it."
A Colorado native, Mammel grew up in Denver and graduated from Colorado College. He earned master's and doctor's degrees in economics from the University of Kentucky, where he did his thesis on affordable housing. He married Susan Brinkerhoff of Denver in August 1972.
Mammel began his 30-year banking career with the Federal Home Loan Bank in Cincinnati and came to Colorado in 1974 as a vice president of First National Bank of Denver. He held several executive posts with successor banks, IntraWest Financial Corp. and United Banks of Colorado Inc. He also headed the company's banks in Boulder, Colorado Springs and Sterling.
He left Norwest in 1994 to head the Bank of Cherry Creek and Sturm Financial Group, the banking organization owned by Denver billionaire Donald Sturm that includes Western National Bank in Colorado Springs.
"His death is a tremendous loss for not only my organization, but all Colorado communities, " Sturm said. "He was a best friend, business partner and a dedicated, hard-working and charismatic leader and motivator."
Mammel resigned his banking posts earlier this year when he learned of his terminal illness.
"In the last year, when he knew what he had, he produced one of the most positive statements of life I have ever read. I keep it in a safe place in my home, " Hirsch said. "The last time I visited him, I went to comfort him and he ended up comforting me."
Mammel served on the boards of the Colorado Springs Symphony, the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce and the Urban League of the Pikes Peak Region. He also served on numerous boards in the Denver area, including the Denver branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.
He is survived by his wife, Susan; two daughters, Jordan Mammel of Estes Park and Lindsey Mammel of Houston; a sister, Kay Mammel Sellers of Denver; and his parents, Dr. Clayton and Jeanne Mammel of Denver.
Mammel planned his memorial service, which will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1820 Broadway, Denver. Interment will be in Leoti, Kan.
Donald and Susan Sturm have established the $1 million Gary Mammel Fund to promote home ownership for low- and moderate-income families. The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City has established a scholarship fund for Colorado school teachers to attend graduate-level economic education programs.
