Helen DeVries - - 1921 - 2004

Helen Margaret DeVries a lifelong resident of Olathe, died on Thursday, July 1, 2004, at her residence. She was 83.

Mrs. DeVries was born on June 4, 1921, in Olathe, to Arthur Kennedy and Lydia (Sanders) Elicker.

She married Thurlow DeVries on Dec. 12, 1943, in Olathe. He survives.

Mrs. DeVries was actively involved in the care of the livestock and crops on the family farm. She worked side by side with her husband, who had a matching tractor.

She was a member of Olathe Methodist Church, involving herself in weekly Bible study and helping with various youth groups and teenage work trips. She enjoyed reading, needlework, her family and tending the roses in her garden.

Mrs. DeVries is survived by her husband, Thurlow DeVries of Olathe; a son and his wife, Charles and Trudy DeVries of Craig; two daughters and their husbands, Janet and Kirk Smith of Delta, and Roxanne and Rodney Brockelman of Strasburg; six grandchildren, Travis Smith of Nashville, Tenn., Jason Smith of Fort Collins, Garrett Brockelman and Julian Brockelman, both of Strausburg, Justin DeVries of Provo, Utah, and Rachel DeVries of London, Ky.; two great - grandchildren; and a sister, Alice Sanburg of Montrose.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Elicher; a sister, Esther Atkinson; and a son, Donald Lee DeVries.

A funeral service was held July 6, at Olathe Methodist Church with Pastor Doug Hill officiating. Interment followed at the Valley Lawns Cemetery in Montrose.

Howard Wilson - - 1923 - 2004

Howard Brance Wilson of Hotchkiss died on Thursday, July 8, 2004, Delta County Memorial Hospital. He was 80.

A funeral service was held on July 12 at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Hotchkiss, with Reverend Ross Blackstock officiating. Interment followed at Riverside Cemetery in Hotchkiss.

Mr. Wilson was born on Nov. 17, 1923, in Seneca, Mo., to Brance and Lillie (Snow) Wilson. He and his family moved to Rogers Mesa when he was six months old. He attended school in Lazear and graduated from Hotchkiss High School in 1941. He attended Mesa Junior College until he enlisted in the Army during World War II.

He married Charlotte Ann Keough on Sept. 28, 1948, in Delta. She survives.

Mr. Wilson was a fruit grower and a horticulturist. The fruit industry was very important to him and he worked with many fruit growers in Delta, Montrose and Mesa counties. He was a charter member of Hotchkiss Elks Lodge #1807, past president of Hotchkiss Kiwanis Club, a member of the Horticulture Society of Colorado and the Disabled American Veterans. He was a former 4 - H leader and was active in the Republican Party, serving as precinct committee chairman for many years.

He is survived by his wife of over 55 years, Charlotte Ann Wilson of Hotchkiss; a daughter and her husband, Beverley and Bruce Dwire of Grand Junction; a son, Edwin Wilson of Delta; and four grandchildren, Teresa Dwire, Karen Dwire, Justin Wilson and Audrey Wilson.

Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack Wilson and R.D. Wilson; and a sister, Leila.

Mary Magenta - - 1945 - 2004

Mary Jane Magenta of Santa Maria, Calif., died after major surgery for lung cancer on Saturday, July 3, 2004, at her residence. She was 59.

Mrs. Magenta was born on June 20, 1945, in Reading, Pa., to Commander Sergeant Donald M. and Florence M. Wood. She graduated from Itazuki AFB High School in Japan in 1963. She moved with her family to Dover, Del.

She married George S. Magenta Jr. on Oct. 9, 1965, at Dover AFB. He survives.

Mrs. Magenta was a United States Air Force Civil Service employee for 38 years. She began her career in 1966 as a clerk typist in Fort Hood, Texas. She was chief of manpower and organization at Vandenberg AFB.

She is survived by her husband of 38 years, George Magenta of Santa Maria, Calif.; her mother, Florence Wood of Dover, Del.; two brothers and their wives, Michael and Lorrie Wood of Dover, Del., and Donald and Sheryl Wood of Solvang, Calif.; her mother - in - law, Rita Magenta of Santa Barbara, Calif.; a sister - in - law and her husband, Pam and Joe Cocker of Crawford; a brother - in - law and his wife, Jeff and Val Magenta of Baltimore, Md.; two nieces, Libby Wood and Chelsey Wood, both of Solvang, Calif.; and two nephews, Graham Wood and his wife Mary of Anchorage, Alaska, and Justin Wood of Dover, Del.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 15, at the Santa Maria Country Club in Santa Maria Calif.

Nelson McFarland - - 1932 - 2004

Arthur Nelson McFarland of Cedaredge died on Saturday, July 10, 2004, at his residence on Cedar Mesa. He was 72.

No services are planned.

Mr. McFarland was born on March 13, 1932, in Sedalia, Mo., to John and Edith (Cable) McFarland. He spent his childhood in Denver and graduated from East High School. He attended Denver University. He lived in Alameda, Calif., for several years before moving to Cedaredge 11 years ago.

He married Jayne Black on May 2, 1951, in Raton, N.M. They celebrated their 53rd anniversary. She survives.

Mr. McFarland served in the Unites States Coast Guard during World War II. He was a manager for a transportation company. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and tinkering around the house.

He is survived by his wife, Jayne McFarland of Cedaredge; a son, Van McFarland of Torrance, Calif.; a brother and his wife, John and Billie McFarland of Auburndale, Fla.; two grandchildren, Jessie McFarland and Doug McFarland, both of Torrance, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. McFarland was preceded in death by two brothers, Stanley McFarland and Clayton McFarland.

Norman Abshire - - 1934 - 2004

Norman L. "Norm" Abshire of Boulder died of a stroke on Friday, July 9, 2004, at Boulder Community Hospital. He was 70.

Mr. Abshire was born on March 16, 1934, in Salida, to Ruric Tyree and Ann Myrtle (Maag) Abshire. He graduated from Colorado Springs High School. He graduated from Western State College in Gunnison in 1959, with a bachelor of arts degree in physics and math.

He was a paratrooper in the U.S. Army and a sergeant in the U.S. Army Airborne Division from 1953 to 1956.

Mr. Abshire married Mable Littlefield on Oct. 26, 1957, in Montrose. She survives.

Mr. Abshire was a physicist for the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration in Boulder. He was a member of Foothills Kiwanis, Boulder Elks, University of Colorado Buff Club and Kappa Delta Mu fraternity at Western State in Gunnison.

He enjoyed golfing, traveling, making new friends and cultivating old friendships.

Mr. Abshire is survived by his wife, Mable Abshire of Boulder; a son, Allen Abshire of Arvada; three daughters, Amy Abshire of Blackhawk, Amanda Pearson of Crestone and Angela Teegardin of Louisville; and eight grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, July 17, at 10 a.m. at the Abshire family residence, 7391 Brockway Drive, in Boulder.

Roberta McCracken - - 1914 - 2004

Roberta J. McCracken of Grand Junction, formerly of Delta, died on Friday, July 9, 2004, at her home. She was 89.

Mrs. McCracken was born on Dec. 24, 1914, in Belaire, Ohio, to Alford Earl and Margaret (Marling) Jewell. She was raised in Fort Collins by her aunt and uncle, Richard Irl and Isabel Mawson. She graduated from Colorado A & M College in Fort Collins.

She married Edwin S. McCracken on Sept. 9, 1939, in Castle Rock. He preceded her in death. She lived in many places prior to moving to Austin in 1959. She moved to Grand Junction in 1990.

Mrs. McCracken was a teacher for 12 years for the Delta County School District. She volunteered with the school for many years following her retirement. She was a 50 - year member of the Tri - Delta Sorority. She served as secretary and bookkeeper for the Delta Teacher's Credit Union for many years. She enjoyed her family and served in leadership roles for her children's activities.

She is survived by four daughters, Cheryl McCracken of Montrose, Serena Powell and her husband Jim of Grand Junction, Marla Cinnamon and her husband Jim of Delta, and Coy J. Cornforth of Casa Grande, Ariz.; four sons and their wives, Luther and Wanda McCracken of Delta, Richard and Kim McCracken of Grand Junction, Vernon and Jan McCracken of Delta, and Edwin Irl and Debbie McCracken of Austin; 23 grandchildren; 39 great - grandchildren; three great - great - grandchildren; and her long - time caregiver, Matt Charlevoix.

Mrs. McCracken was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin McCracken; a brother, James Jewell; a stepbrother, Wally Mawson; and a half - sister, Jean Bramer.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 16, at 10 a.m. at Mesa View Cemetery in Delta.

Alice Young - - 1925 - 2004

Alice G. Young of Paonia died on Thursday, July 22, 2004, at her residence. She was 79.

A memorial service was held on July 26 at Paonia United Methodist Church with Reverend John Nadasi and James Gall officiating.

Mrs. Young was born on March 4, 1925, in Winterset, Iowa, to Harry F. and Winnie A. (Haines) Anderson. She spent her childhood in Winterset, Iowa, graduating from high school in 1943. She attended the American Institute of Business in Des Moines, Iowa.

She married George A. Young on June 5, 1949, in Winterset, Iowa. He survives. They moved from Iowa to Paonia 47 years ago.

Mrs. Young was a member of Paonia United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and Pitkin Mesa Club. She enjoyed crocheting, traveling, playing cards and spending her winters in Arizona.

She is survived by her husband of over 55 years, George A. Young of Paonia; four daughters, Mary Shipley and her husband Ward, Gwen Bulla and her husband Bob, and Judy Young, all of Grand Junction, and Jill Emmons and her husband Roger of Paonia; six grandchildren; and five great - grandchildren.

Mrs. Young was preceded in death by a brother, Willis Anderson.
