DOROTHY FORSYTH

October 15, 2004

DOROTHY MAY FORSYTH (nee HICKS/IRELAND) December 13, 1918 - October 11, 2004 Peacefully with her family by her side, Dorothy passed away at home on October 11, 2004. Mother fought a courageous battle against the many health challenges she faced over the past several months. To the very end she displayed the strength and tenacity that were traits throughout her life. Dorothy is survived by her husband James of 23 years; three daughters, Patricia Sheluk (Walter) of Edmonton, Connie Gutierrez (Joe) of San Diego, and Janice Hicks (Ernie Friesen) of Winnipeg; three grandchildren, Joel and Jennifer of California and Kathleen of Edmonton; two sisters, Helen Kalinin and June Patrick; many nieces and nephews and extended family. Dorothy was predeceased in 1976 by her husband William Hicks; her brother Fredrick Ireland and sister Caroline Parker. Mom was a caring wife and mother. She was predeceased by her first husband Bill Hicks after 37 years of marriage. Then after five years of being on her own she met and married Jim. In her first marriage her focus was on raising her three daughters. She was always there as a strong supporter of Bill and her girls. Mom would always offer her help wherever she saw a need. She was involved in her children's activities at school and in the community and gave her full support to Bill as they built their life together and he built his plumbing business. Mom loved flowers, animals and the outdoors spending many seasons at the cottage in the Whiteshell. She worked at different crafts - sewing, crocheting, needle point, were just a few. She was an excellent cook (no one could match her yorkshire pudding or lemon meringue pie) and loved to entertain. When she met and married Jim they enjoyed their twilight years together travelling extensively including Australia, Europe, Mexico, USA and Canada. Health permitting, activities included golf, cross country skiing, and they were members of the Eastern Manitoba Square and Round Dance Association where they met many friends. Mom was a caring, loving and strong woman who would defend in what she believed and she will be sorely missed by all of us. Funeral service will be held on Monday, October 18 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main St. Interment to follow at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dorothy's memory to The Canadian Cancer Society Manitoba Division, 193 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7 or The Winnipeg Humane Society, 5 Kent St., Winnipeg, MB R2L 1X3.
