EARLE ROGERS Peacefully, on Saturday, September 25, 2004 at the St. Boniface Hospital, Earle passed away. He was predeceased by his sister Fern Reeves and brother Bill. Earle is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Helen; son Randy; daughters, Fern (Grant) Wasney, Debbie (John) Shalagan, Lisa (Ray), Barbra (Jeff); grandchildren, Vaughan, Tristan, Trevor, Kyle, and Brodie. He will also be sadly missed by extended family and friends, especially his cousin Gladys Desjardins. Earle was born
in Winnipeg and grew up in Piney, MB. He was overseas during the war, after which he met Helen and they made their home in Winnipeg. Earle was a member of the Elevators Constructors No. 102 and the No. 1 Legion. He enjoyed music, especially playing the fiddle, gardening, bicycling and spending time with friends and family. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 30 at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., with interment and reception to follow. The family would like to thank Dr. Donald Duerksen and Dr. Arthur Blank for their special care. SHIRLEY SAVAGE (nee RUZYCKI) Peacefully on September 26, 2004, at 1:15 a.m., our loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother passed away comfortably at the St. Boniface Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Left to cherish many memories are her husband Stan, son Colin, daughter Carla (Brian), grandson Matthew, brother Michael (Marilyn), sister Alice (Frank), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and dear friends. Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Anastasia and Dmytro, sister in infancy; sister-in-law Betty; and many other aunts and uncles. Shirley was born
on October 3, 1938 in Portage La Prairie, resided in Winnipeg and was married to her husband Stan. She was blessed with her two children, Colin and Carla, and later on a son-in-law Brian and grandchild Matthew. Shirley retired in the year 2000, from St. Boniface Hospital as a senior ward clerk, a job she much loved, making many lasting friendships. She was a self-sacrificing person who gave up much of her own time to the benefits of others. She was very dedicated and lived according to her faith. In her leisure time, she enjoyed reading, music, the arts and most of all, the family gatherings and reunions. The family appreciates and thanks Dr. C. Olweny and staff of St. Boniface Hospital for their loving care of Shirley. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 29 at 10:00 a.m., at Blessed Sacrament Parish, 425 Rosseau Ave. E., Transcona with Rev. Fr. Gerry Ward officiating. OLIVIA FERNANDES SERPA December 29, 1915- September 26, 2004 With family at her side, Olivia passed away peacefully at the age of 88, at Bethania Personal Care Home. Olivia was predeceased by her parents, Joaquim and Rosalina Fernandes and her five other siblings. Olivia was born
in the village of Sao Bartolomeu, in the island of Terceira, Acores, Portugal. In 1940, she married Jose and raised five children together with love and devotion, Maria Irene Dutra (Bert Basarowich), Manuel Serpa, Joe Carlos (Filomena) Serpa, Maria Lourdes (Domingos) Borges and Arlindo (Chirstine) Serpa. Together with their children, they moved to Canada in 1966, where thy spent the rest of their lives watching their family grow to include grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jose (Karen) Dutra, Paulo (Sandra) Dutra, Elizabeth (Henrique), Dina, Elmiro, Paula (Corey, betrothed), Sandra (Steve, betrothed), Diane, Roger (Betty) Borges, Danny (Dawn) Borges, Elsie and Mike continue to cherish the memory of their Avo. Matthew, Tyler, James, Aaron, Christopher, Irene, Samantha and Bradley will also remember great-grandma with fondness. Olivia will also be missed by many nieces, nephews and friends. A special thanks to the staff at Bethania Personal Care Home and Dr. Duerksen for their loving care and continued support. Olivia was a part of the Sisterhood of Carmelita. MARY STASKA Peacefully on Saturday, September 25, 2004, at the Middlechurch Home, Mary Staska, at the age of 89, went to be with her Lord and Saviour and to be reunited with her husband Joseph, who passed away December 19, 1991. Mary was born
on September 6, 1915, in Brooksby, SK, the oldest of six children. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Lawrence (Karen), Fran (Ed) Kazuk, Margaret (Gerald) Monaster and Joe (Wilma); eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; brothers, Peter, Carl, Bruno (Mary) and Rev. Fr. Stanley Urbanoski; sister Valerie Bleakney; and numerous other relatives. Mary was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Sophie Urbanoski; daughter-in-law Linda Staska; and brother-in-law Roy Bleakney. Mary worked for many years at the City of Winnipeg Transit until her retirement at age 65. She enjoyed cooking and tending to her vegetable and flower gardens. She was also actively involved in her church. A heartfelt thanks to the staff of Middlechurch Home and others who blessed her with visits. LOUISE YAKIELASHEK Peacefully on September, 25, 2004, at St. Joseph's Residence, Louise passed away at the age of 85. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Andrew; three brothers, Lawrence, Stanley and Joseph Ryz; and her sister Rose. She leaves to mourn her daughter Andrea Dorratt (husband Bryan); grandchildren, Monique Smith (husband Dave) and Terry Dorratt (wife Laura); and three great-grandchildren, Danielle, Noelle and Bryan. Also her youngest brother Tony Ryz (wife Margaret); and sisters-in-law, Jean Ryz and Catherine Ryz; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Louise was affectionately known as "Mrs. Yak" and "Gram" to friends and family. She moved into Winnipeg from Sifton, MB, where she was proud of her farming heritage. She quickly became involved at St. John Cantius' Church in both the Polish and English choirs as she loved to sing. She was actively involved in the church and community and was a lifetime member of the Catholic Women's League. In 1950 she joined the Hudson's Bay Co. and was a career woman who enjoyed her 27 years at the Bay. Her outgoing personality and conscientious attitude made for a perfect fit as she thoroughly enjoyed working there. An early retirement was needed to care for her late husband Andrew, spending long hours by his side. Louise opened her home and heart throughout the years to family and friends that needed a place to stay or a shoulder to cry on. Her door was always open. In 1972 the cottage was built and was her second love, whether it was gardening or building, all tasks were a joy at the lake. Gram also loved escaping winter in Mazatlan and had many fun times and friends that still ask about her. Louise had a great sense of humour and enjoyed life and people. Her honesty and commitment were her strong traits and she never did things half way. This was demonstrated throughout her life in work, play, good times and bad, Louise would always be there. We will always miss you Louise (Gram). The family would like to thank the staff at St. Joseph's and home care who cared for her with kindness and respect. SOPHIE YARISH It is with deep regret and sorrow that the family announces the passing of Sophie Yarish on Sunday, September 26, 2004 at Seven Oaks Hospital with her family by her side. She was predeceased by her husband Steve in 1992; her parents, Mike and Anne Matiation; brothers, Andrew, Peter, Bill; and sister Phyllis. Left to mourn her loss are her children, Eugene (Judy), Murry (Judy), MaryAnn; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; sisters, Mary Ewanyshyn, Ollie Findlay, Elsie Siebert; and brother Zane Matiation. Sophie was born
and raised in Oakburn, MB on July 12, 1923 and was married to Steve Yarish in 1941. They moved their family to Winnipeg in 1958, joined St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church and were very active in the life of the parish. Sophie belonged to the UCWLC and recently received a 40 year pin. Her participation and support will be greatly missed. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Seven Oaks Hospital for their kindness and care. Also very special thanks to her very close friends for their unconditional love and support. GISLI BJORN GUDLAUGUR BJORNSON It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Bjorn Bjornson, aged 64 years, of Arborg on Wednesday, October 6, 2004 at the Arborg Hospital. He leaves to mourn his loss his beloved wife of 42 years, Alice (Boundy), his four sons, Rob and his wife Shelby, and precious grandchildren, Cassedi and Collby of Stony Plain, AB; Timothy; Rene and his wife Lisa; and Mark and his wife Sheri, all of Calgary, AB. He also leaves his sisters, Olena Palson of Kenora, ON; Steinunn Einarson of Hnausa; Johanna and her husband George Pickering of Winnipeg; his aunt Helga Jonasson of Arborg; father and mother-in-law, George and Maria Boundy, in-laws Kristine and Karl Bauernhuber of Winnipeg, Brian and Sharon Boundy, and Herbert Boundy of Arborg. He will be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Bjorn was predeceased by his parents Timi and Bjorg, and brother Ernest. He was born
in Riverton, MB on April 20, 1940, and was raised in Vidir. Bjorn married Alice Boundy in 1962. Three of their sons were born
in Arborg, and their youngest son was born
in Saskatoon. He was very proud of his sons, their families and their accomplishments. Bjorn worked for the Co-op for for many years starting in Arborg, and from 1974 managed Co-op stores in Delisle, Churchbridge and Lestock, SK before moving back to Manitoba in 1987. They lived at Moosehorn and Ashern before moving back to the Arborg area in 2002. At the time of his death he was helping a school friend with fall harvesting. Bjorn loved music, and played guitar from a very young age with his uncle Bjossi, and aunties Kristjana and Helga. He played with several bands throughout the years, and most recently entertained at many functions as Bjorn and Company. Bjorn was very proud of his Icelandic Heritage. A private family graveside service will be held at the Riverton Community Cemetery on Saturday, October 9 followed by a memorial service at the Hnausa Community Hall at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Trudy Thorarinson officiating. JEAN CARTWRIGHT C.D. On Wednesday, October 6, 2004, Jean Cartwright passed away at the Health Sciences Centre. She was born
on August 30, 1920 in Portage la Prairie and raised in Winnipeg. Jean was predeceased by her beloved husband Al; parents Alan O. and Amy Grant; brothers, George, Alan and Ken; sister Margaret; infant niece Lindsey Love; and brother-in-law Tom Robertson. She is survived by son David Davidson; sisters, Sheila Robertson of Calgary and Betty (Jim) Love; sisters-in-law, Enez and Margaret Grant; many nieces and nephews. Mom worked for Canadian John's Manville and U.G.G. for many years. She served from 1952 to 1965 in the Technical Regiment R.E.M.E. She enjoyed many years at her cottage in Spruce Sands, MB. She was a member of the #1 Legion for 29 years. She will be missed by all including her neighbours at 522 Sherbrook St. who have done so much. DAVID JAMES CROSS It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of Dave in Victoria, BC on October 5, 2004 at the age of 73. Dave was born
December 24, 1930 in Montreal, QC. He leaves behind his wife Yvette; son Larry; daughter Maureen Cross; daughter-in-law Grace-Ann; and grandsons, Adam, Steve, Kyle and Richard Cross. A journalist for 51 years, he retired to Victoria until diabetes. ultimately claimed his life. Dave moved west to work for Canadian Press in Winnipeg in 1950. He married Yvette Beauchamp in 1952. 1957 was the start of a 23 year love affair with the Winnipeg Tribune. He rose through the ranks until he held positions of responsibility such as assistant managing editor and ombudsman. Respected by his peers, Dave chaired numerous Western Canadian News Editor Conferences. The Tribune folded in 1980 so Dave and his wife moved to Ottawa continuing his career at the Ottawa Citizen in various capacities. Upon retirement, Dave served as President, for two, four year terms, of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Queen of Peace Conference. Ill health forced him to step down a year ago. Funeral services will be held in Victoria at the Queen of Peace Church, 851 Old Esquimalt Rd., at noon, Tuesday, October 12. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. - 30 -

KENNETH "ARCHIE" FRANK ERNEST DENNER It is with deep regret we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, brother and friend, Ken Denner, on Friday, October 1, 2004, at the Grace General Hospital at the age of 76 years. Dad leaves to mourn his children and grandchildren, Wayne, Ben (Karen) Brian, Donna (Ray) Jason, Michelle, Geoff (LeLaine); brothers, Bob (Mary) and Ron (Ruth); sisters, Patsy Holmes and Doreen Steen; close friend Anne; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Ken was predeceased by his first wife Ruby; second wife Sharon; father Frank; mother Helen; brother Jack; and sister Florence. Ken was born
and raised in Stony Mountain. He was employed by and retired from the City of Winnipeg, Parks and Rec Department. Ken met many important people while on this job, as he was involved in many park events in Winnipeg. One of them was Mayor Juba where there was a park opened in his name and Ken was a major player in that park. He was given a plaque in recognition for the work that he had done. Ken took pride in whatever he did. Dad became a member of the Stony Mountain Masonic Lodge # 134 in 1975. In 1981, Ken became Master of the Lodge and from 1984 to 1985, Ken was District Grand Master of the 10th Masonic District. He was involved in many events with the Lodge and was part of many people's lives during these years. Ken was very proud to be part of this family of men, and was always willing to do whatever had to be done. He also belonged to the Khartum Shriners and received his 25 year pin this year. Ken was a lifetime member of the Oriental Band and it was fun to watch him come down the road during the parades. He was so proud to be part of this family, and we were very proud of him. The fun part was when we would go to see the animals when the circus came to Winnipeg. Some of Dad's hobbies were hunting, fishing, camping, curling, football and hockey. Dad will be remembered for his booming voice, but had a gentle and kind heart. Remember the good times, forget the bad times, and live for today. In compliance with Ken's wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. At Ken's request, a private interment with his children only has taken place. Our family would like to thank the staff on the 3rd Floor at Extendicare for all the care and support given to Ken. We would want you to remember Ken for the smile on his face, the twinkle in his eyes and the wave and wink that he gave to everyone. Dear Dad: Every wish that's made for you Is a warm and loving one.
