KARL FINGAL HAGLUND "Papa Fingie" Karl Fingal Haglund passed away peacefully on September 17, 2004 at Victoria General Hospital. He is survived by Sarah Mae, his beloved wife of 59 years; son Robert; daughter-in-law Diane; granddaughter Jane; a sister Maj (Helmbrandt) of Sweden; and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Carl and Emma (nee Carlsson); and by brothers, Arthur, Arnold and Birger; and by sisters, Emma (Sandberg), Abela (Oscarson) and Gunda (Lindstrom) all of Sweden. Fingal was born
in Konga, Sweden on August 27, 1902. He immigrated to Manitoba in 1930. While working at Midwest Aircraft in Winnipeg he met Mae Wood. They were married April 28, 1945 at Mae's parents' home in Darlingford. Fingal had purchased 78 Home St. in late 1944 and this would remain the family home until 1992 when the couple moved to Lion's Place. Following his marriage Fingal worked with Canadian National Railway until his retirement in 1967. In 1962 he and Mae purchased a cottage at Red Rock Lake. The landscape of the Whiteshell is much like the area around Konga. Life at "Fingal's Cave", fishing, picking blueberries and walking in the bush, gave much joy to Fingal for 25 years. In late retirement he and Mae fell in love with Hawaii and spent seventeen winter vacations there. Fingal was blessed with remarkable health. He actively cycled and walked until his mid 90's. In recent years he accepted the rigours of advanced age with courage and grace. He is sadly missed. The family would like to thank the staff team of ward 4 North, Victoria General Hospital, for their compassionate care and caring for Fingal during this past month. In lieu of flowers friends who wish are invited to make donations to the Victoria General Hospital Foundation or the Nature Conservancy of Canada. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 25 at 1:30 p.m. at the Darlingford Cemetery, Karen Tjaden officiating. A reception will follow at Wiebe Funeral Chapel, Morden. EDITH ELVIRA JOHNSON 1911 - 2004 Edith Johnson passed away peacefully Monday, September 13, 2004 at the age of 92. She was predeceased by her parents, Hans and Ellen Johnson; sister and brother-in-law, Elsie and Tom Holmes; brothers, Ted Johnson and Allan Johnson; and nephew Leonard Johnson. Edith was born
in Minnedosa, MB. As a child she attended Hazelwood School. She was an active member of the Smoland Covenant Church where she played both piano and organ. Edith was a talented seamstress and worked for some time for the Singer Sewing Machine Company. She then completed the licensed practical nursing program. She made her home in Winnipeg and worked in various nursing positions until her retirement. Edith enjoyed family and friends. She enjoyed travelling and entertaining. She was an independent woman who enjoyed life. She is survived by her two sisters-in-law, Mabel Johnson and Marie Johnson; four nieces and their families, Margaret (Eldon) Kaufman, Norma (Roger) Huston, Ellen (Tony) Enns, and Ann (Al) Taylor; as well as other friends and relatives. A memorial service to celebrate Edith's life will be held Friday, September 24 at 10:30 a.m. at Klassen Funeral Home, 1897 Henderson Hwy., with Rev. Brian Stiller presiding. An interment service will follow at Minnedosa Smoland Cemetery at 4:00 p.m., with Rev. Dan Pearson presiding. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Edith's memory to a charity of your choice. JANE BARKER HAWKES KEAY (nee PATERSON) At her home on Sunday, September 19, 2004. Born January 30, 1915, to James and Alice Paterson of William Avenue, Jean grew up in Winnipeg. She was active in sports and especially enjoyed horseback riding. She worked for the T. Eaton Company in Winnipeg and rose to the position of Chief Copy Editor in the catalogue department. Jean married Hugh Keay in 1951 and they moved soon after to Toronto, returning to Winnipeg in 1960. She settled in Transcona and built a wide circle of friends through volunteer work as a longtime member of the Kiwanis Club. Most of her family and relatives lived nearby and they had many years of happy times together. Jean and her sisters were accomplished piano players and music was a large part of every family gathering. Through her retirement, Jean remained active in senior's clubs and continued to touch everyone with her wonderful attitude, celebrating the little things in life and proudly enjoying her independent lifestyle. Kind and gracious, she always considered others ahead of herself. Her love of animals was well known and Jean adopted many stray and injured pets and made them part of her family. Jean delighted in her son James' family and was especially proud of grandchildren, Lindsey and Michael, taking delight in their accomplishments and thinking of them constantly. She also admired and took inspiration from her brother Dave of Vancouver. Jean was predeceased by her parents, James and Alice Paterson; her great-aunt Louise; sisters, Mary (Gus) Bilodeau and Edna (Tony) Myska; her husband Hugh; and niece Anne Rand, all of Winnipeg. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James and Irene and their children, Lindsey and Michael of Texas. She is also survived by her brother David (Mary) Paterson; and niece Susan (Ken) Eberhardt and family of Vancouver; nephews, Robert (Barbara) Bilodeau, Dave (Brenda) Myska; niece Barbara Bilodeau and their families; in-laws, Koji and Shigeko Sato of Winnipeg, and Jane Keay and family in the Ottawa area. Jean will be dearly remembered for her wonderful spirit, compassion, and love of life. She found enjoyment in everything she did and everyone she met. Jean set a remarkable example for her family to celebrate and live by, and we are all very grateful for her time with us. ELIE KLYNE October 20, 1915 - September 19, 2004 It is with great sadness that the Klyne family announces the passing of our husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather on Sunday, September 19, 2004 at home with family at his side, at the age of 88. He leaves to mourn his wife Antoinette of 67 years; daughters, Evelyn Leclerc (Oscar) of Winnipeg, Louise Nault (Phillip) and Yvonne Nicholson (Robert) of Winnipeg; sons, Norman of Alberta, Willie of British Columbia, Eddie of Winnipeg; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren; sisters, Florence Lagimodiere of Winnipeg, Lynn Riel; and brother Melford of British Columbia. He was predeceased by his parents, Edouard and Eleanore Klyne; his infant daughter Lenore; brothers, Pete and Louie; sisters, Bibianne and Edna. Elie was born
and raised in Woodridge, MB. He spent most of his life working as a truck driver. He loved cars and enjoyed playing baseball as a young man. He took great pleasure in watching sports, reading and spending time with his family. Our memory of Dad will live forever in our hearts. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 23 at St. Emile Roman Catholic Church, 556 St. Anne's Rd. Interment of the cremated remains will be held at the P. W. ALBERT KOHANIK It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Albert Kohanik, on September 16, 2004, at the age of 99, at the Maples Personal Care Home in Winnipeg. Albert will be lovingly remembered by his children, son Karl (Martha), granddaughter Debbie (Don); son Alfred (Wanda), grandson Kevin (Erin) of Abbotsford, BC; daughter Alice (George), grandson Timothy; daughter Elaine (Bob), grandchildren, Mark, Chris, Brittany of Calgary, AB; son Arthur (Helen); and daughter Joanne (Brian), of Calgary, AB; great-grandchildren, Dylan, Delaney, Matthew, and Kassandra; sister Hilda, of Vancouver, BC; and many nieces and nephews. Albert was predeceased by his wife, Edith; daughter Margaret; parents, six brothers, and three sisters. Dad was born
in Neche, ND. At an early age, the family moved to a homestead in Hanson, SK and then moved to Renata, BC, on the Lower Arrow Lake. He received his education in Renata Public School and Nelson High School. Then the family moved to Manitoba, to the Interlake area at Faulkner. After he left home, he worked on farms during the summer months and fishing in winter. In 1930, he started farming on 320 acres of wild land, which became one of the best farms in the area. In 1940, he married Edith Gutknecht, from Ashern, MB, who passed away in 1992. Dad was an avid fisherman, took great interest in public affairs, was a school trustee for many years and was involved in the Farmers Union. He also supported and encouraged his children in the 4-H Club. After retiring, he travelled across Canada and the United States, and also took a trip to Europe. He spent many winters in Phoenix, AZ and would return to Winnipeg for the summer, where he lived at the Arms of the Cross. He attended the Lutheran Church of the Cross and enjoyed being part of the Senior Citizens Activities. Viewing will be held on Thursday, September 23, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Funeral service will be held on Friday, September 24, at 10:00 a.m., at Lutheran Church of the Cross, Arlington and Ellice. MARGARET (PEGGY) PARDOSKI (nee BROWN) December 14, 1922- September 18, 2004 It is with deep sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Margaret (Peggy) Pardoski aged 81 years old, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's. Peggy was predeceased by her loving husband Joseph in 1994; her brother Billy; sisters, Doris and Irene and her mother and father. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Janet (Richard); grandchildren, Rachel (Alain), Jolene, Richard Jr. (Courtney); great-grandchildren, Alex, Ashton and Rheanne; son Robert (Liane); foster daughter Rose (Tim); grandchildren, Sheena, Florence and Salena; great-grandchildren, Liam and Lucas; two sisters, Lillah Spence and Gay Stanton, both of England; sisters-in-law, Laura Paradoski and Helen Farber; brothers-in-law, Stan (Donalda) Paradoski, Tony Paradoski (Marge) all of St. Andrews; numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives. Peggy and Joe met and married in England during the war on April 17, 1945 and began their wonderful life together back in Canada. Mom was well known for her beautiful sweaters, mittens, etc. She knitted for all of her grandchildren and even her great-grandchildren. We would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Golden Links Lodge for their compassionate care of Mom and their tremendous support for us as a family. ELIZABETH PAYNE (nee SOLOMCHUK) Peacefully on Sunday, September 19, 2004 at the Concordia Hospital, cancer finally claimed the life of our beloved Elizabeth, after a very long and courageous battle with MS. Betty is survived by her loving husband Albert; brother Edward (Esther); sisters, Pearl and Sophie; brother-in-law Stan (Ivy); and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother Daniel (Mae), her sister Mary (Phillip) and nephew Robert. At Elizabeth's request, there will be no public service and a private family interment will be held at a later date. Flowers gratefully declined, but if friends so wish memorial donations may be made on her behalf, to MS Society, Manitoba Chapter or to a charity of one's choice. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. Alvi and the nurses and staff at the Concordia Hospital and home care for their kindness, care and understanding over the years. ANNA SIGRIDUR REYKDAL (nee GUDMUNDSON) Peacefully, on Sunday, September 19, 2004, with her family by her side, Anna passed away at the Lakeshore General Hospital in Ashern. Anna was born
April 9, 1911 in Hayland, MB. She attended Hayland School and furthered her education in Winnipeg. On June 4, 1940, she married Walter Reykdal. They spent their first few years of marriage farming on Birch Island until moving to Hayland where they continued to build their life together. Anna had a variety of interests and talents. She was an avid gardener and no one could keep up with her at berry picking time. Many people were blessed to be given a pair of mittens or a sweater that was knitted by her speedy hands, or a beautiful, handmade patchwork quilt. She loved playing cards and any kind of puzzle. A trip to Anna's always meant a taste of fresh bread, love-knots and vinatarta. She took great pride in her Icelandic heritage, travelling to Iceland to visit friends and family. She spoke the language fluently, and even shared an occasional Icelandic lullaby. Anna's greatest gift was in her love and devotion to her family. Her memory will be cherished by her children, Stephen and Treina, Donald and Yvonne, David and Gladys, Joyce and Larry, Dianne and Rod, Janet and Lindy; by her grandchildren, Michael, Jimmy, Alex, Becky, Charlene, Colleen, Bubby, Calvin, Tanis, Tracy, Laurel, Scott, Kristy, Damaen, Amanda, Tegan; 16 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Svava and Freda. She was predeceased by her daughter Pauline Dianne and her husband Walter, and by her brothers and sisters, Margaret, John, Laufey, Helga, Freda, Kristrun, Bjarni, Hjalmar, Runa and Soffia. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Lakeshore General Hospital and the Ashern Personal Care Home and all of Anna's homecare workers for their care and compassion.
