PAUL BERGER
August 21, 2004
PAUL BERGER January 6, 1923 - August 10, 2004 Our beloved husband, father and zaida passed away peacefully at the Sharon Home at the age of 81 years, after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife, Eva; daughters, Yvette Berger and Sharon (Charles) Eisbrenner; son Lindsay (Aileen) Berger and grandsons, Simon and Adam Eisbrenner. Paul was born
in Lvov, Poland (Lemberg). He was taken to a Russian work camp at the age of 16, when the Second World War started and joined the Red Army two years later. His mechanical inclination led to his occupations as a mechanic and a driver. He drove trucks, tanks and later a staff car for his colonel. Paul and Eva came to Winnipeg in 1950 and considered Winnipeg a paradise compared to war-ravaged Europe. He bought a truck as soon as he could, and quickly earned a living buying and selling scrap metal and later selling fruits and vegetables in rural Manitoba. His natural friendliness and gift for languages earned him many loyal customers amongst the farmers, as he could talk with them in their own language, whether English, Polish, Ukrainian, Russian, German, French or Yiddish. During the winters, he would cut leather in Winnipeg's bustling garment industry, and later he made this a full time career. He worked at Rice Sportswear and later as the building manager at the Monash Manor. He was active in the General Monash Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. Paul made friends easily, and up until a few months ago, he was still meeting and remembering friends from 25 or 30 years ago. He had an incredible joie de vivre, and was passionate about world affairs, politics and especially events in Israel. He was willing and able to argue with exuberant intelligence about almost any topic. Even though the Second World War cut his formal education short, he made up for it by always having his nose buried in a book, magazine or newspaper. He instilled a love of learning and intellectual pursuit in his children. He was kind, playful, passionate and fearless and had many other good qualities too numerous to mention. Paul's family would like to thank the kind and compassionate staff of the Sharon Home, who made a difficult time easier to bear. Flowers are gratefully declined, and we respectfully ask that you make a contribution to a charity of your choice. We love you and miss you, Dad.

LILLIAN FRIGHT
August 21, 2004
LILLIAN ELEANOR FRIGHT (nee DINNEY) It is with great sadness that our family announces the death of our sister, mother and grandmother Lillian Eleanor Fright. Lillian passed away in Winnipeg, on Thursday, August 19, 2004 with her family at her side. She was predeceased by her husband Bertrum (1977) and leaves to mourn her five children, Gay Anne, Bradley, Kelly (Leah), Cory, and Blair (Sandy); seven grandchildren, Todd, Lindsey, Shea, Kyle, Tyler, Trenton and Brett; beloved brother George Dinney (Nina) of Denver; sister-in-law Marge Dinney; as well as many nieces and nephews. Lillian retired in 1985 after 21 years of service for the Winnipeg Police Department, Training Division. She had two very special longtime friends in the Police Department, Don Wardrop and Lawrence Klippenstein who were there for her after her husband's death and for many years that followed. She was fondly known as "Inspector Fright" and developed many lasting friendships in the Police Department, one's that she treasured deeply. We tend to place value on the lives of those who have built great wealth or celebrity rather than the significant contributions of our world by ordinary people. Lillian was a ordinary person who led an extraordinary life. Wealth and celebrity she had none. Kindness, courage, hope, and most of all love are words that best describe the spirit of Lillian. Her greatest accomplishment was to raise her five children on her own after the early passing of her husband. She provided her children with the values of honesty, trust and compassion that have taken them from childhood to mature adult. Over the past many years Lillian was plagued with many chronic illnesses that had taken their toll on her health. At the end of her life she had no complaints or regrets but only thankfulness for her life's experience. She was never ordinary; to her family and friends she was always extraordinary and valued. Death is a passage at a point in time. It passes but memory lasts forever. We are left with wonderful memories and photos of a woman who was intelligent, funny, caring, dedicated to her family, strong, hard working and unselfish. In accordance with Lillian's wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial service will take place on Tuesday, August 24 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main St. Honourary pallbearers will be her seven grandchildren. In lieu of flowers those wishing to remember Lillian can make a contribution to a charity of choice. "We will love you forever." SUSAN HARRISON
August 21, 2004
SUSAN CATHERINE HARRISON (HORLEY) May 28, 1965 - August 16, 2004 It is with broken hearts and tear-filled eyes that we regretfully announce the death of Susan on August 16, 2004, in Winnipeg MB. Sue leaves to mourn and to celebrate her life, her beloved husband Bill; sons, Derek (nine) and Brock (seven); her mother Carol Horley; brothers, Rob (Lois) Horley, Will (Melaine) Horley and Peter Horley. Also her parents-in-law Wilma and Bill Harrison; sisters-in-law, Susan Harrison, Gail Harrison and Tanis (Grant) Kydd; brother-in-law David (Jennifer) Harrison and grandmother Marion Day (Illinois, USA), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. Susan was predeceased by her Dad, Robert W. Horley, in November 2003. Susan was born
May 28, 1965, in Kenora, ON. She was brought up in the town of Sioux Narrows, ON and on the family island at the Lake of the Woods. Her schooling took place in Sioux Narrows, Kenora, and the University of Manitoba where she earned her degree in Human Ecology with a minor in Commerce (1989). Susan also completed her degree in Adult Education through St. Francis Xavier (2002). Sue and Bill met in Sioux Narrows in the summer of 1985 and were married in December 1986. They settled in Kenora, for a few years and then moved to Winnipeg to complete their university. Sue worked for Manitoba Housing (Winnipeg, 1988 to 1990), Committee for Skill Development and Human Resources Canada (Kenora 1991 to 1997) and for the Manitoba Department of Education as a training co-ordinator and creator of training opportunities (Winnipeg 1997 to 2004). Sue loved her career and all the people she worked with. Sue always wanted to help people do better and was an inspiration to many over the years. Sue's greatest joys involved her family. She was a great supporter of her boys and was always encouraging, loving and proud of everything they did. She supported her husband Bill in all his business endeavours (A&W), she loved being involved with Derek and Brock in school, sports, travelling, fishing and during family time, especially at the family cottages (Coney Island and the Sanctuary Resort) on Lake of the Woods. Our happiest memories are of the love and the companionship we shared with each other and our boys, families, relatives, friends, neighbours and co-workers. We have been blessed to have so many special people in our lives. Sue's laughter, her love, her fighting spirit, and her infectious positive attitude will never be forgotten. Sue was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2002. After the initial shock, she became determined that we would all relate to her with love and happiness, not with sadness. She fought as hard as she could, wanting to be as much a part of life as possible. Sue faced her illness with strength, courage, determination and bravery, determined she would win. Sue never quit making sure she did everything she could to try to get things back to normal. Sue will be our hero and inspiration in the days and years to come. Special thanks to CancerCare Manitoba and all the people in all the medical communities that we encountered, especially the staffs at the oncology departments under CancerCare Manitoba, at St. Boniface General Hospital and the Lake of the Woods District Hospital. Very special thanks to Dave, my brother and business partner, who gave Sue and I the time together we needed to fight the war against cancer. A remembrance service and celebration of Sue's life will be held at the Charleswood United Church on Monday, August 23, at 10:00 a.m., with a light reception to follow at Vasa Lund Park, 5429 Roblin Blvd. In the afternoon, Sue will make her final journey to the Lake of the Woods to rest in peace.
