RAYMOND (RAY) FREDERICK THOMAS STAPLES It is with deep sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Ray Staples, aged 76 years, in Mahnomen, MN on Sunday, July 11, 2004. Left to mourn are his loving wife of 49 years, Evelyn; son Clint (Penny); daughter Jana Stratford (Howard); grandchildren, Victoria, Thomas, Brenna and Shayla; sister Shirley Geddie; many in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends. Ray was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Lena Staples; sisters, Marjorie Chisholm, and Phyllis and his son-in-law Spencer Stratford. Born on Sunday, July 1, 1928 in Winnipeg, Ray made many friends wherever he went. He was a lifelong athlete of great dedication, and accomplishment. In his school years he took part in many Track and Field activities with Cecil Rhodes and Daniel MacIntyre Schools, excelling in the half mile. In 1946 he won the Manitoba Men's half mile, and one mile races. He was the only man to compete in both races, which were only a few hours apart. Ray was also very involved in soccer. He was a founding member of the Weston Bred, and later moved to the Luxton Royals, where he played until 1969. When Ray wasn't playing soccer, he coached it. Ray guided the North Kildonan Cobra Hockey, and Soccer teams from 1967-77, leading the Boys Soccer Team to a number of Provincial, and Western Canada Championships, and to one Canadian Championship (1971). After starting with MTS after High School, Ray joined the W.F.D., as a firefighter. He retired as Captain, after 35 years of service. Ray met Evelyn Rerick in 1953. The two married in 1955, and were seldom apart. They shared their lives with their two children, Clint, Jana and their grandchildren, Victoria, Thomas, Brenna and Shayla. Ray was an outgoing and energetic man, a devoted husband, father and grandfather and a good friend, one who believed in, and actively supported the community. "We will all miss him" A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 20 at 11:00 a.m. at Knysh Funeral Chapel, 1020 Main St. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations in Ray's memory be made to the Firefighters Burn Fund (envelopes will be available at the memorial service).
