MARY MERRICK (nee BUCHKO) Peacefully, on Friday, July 2, 2004, at the age of 86 years, Mary Merrick, our cherished Aunt, sister and friend left this earth to meet her Lord. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Lou; parents, John and Anne Buchko; and sisters, Anne, Olga and Katherine (Kay). Left to cherish her memory is her devoted sister Tina Liska. She will also be lovingly remembered by her nephews, Max, Tim, George and John; nieces, Maryanne, Joyce and Janice; and their families. Mary was born
and resided in Winnipeg her entire life. She was a longtime member of Holy Eucharist Parish. Mary lived her life by always serving others. She was a devoted and loving wife to Lou whom she loved with all her heart. She was also a devoted daughter and sister. She cared for her nieces and nephews as if they were her own. Everyone that met Mary was touched by her gentle nature and kind heart. Special thanks is extended to the 3rd floor nursing staff at Holy Family Nursing Home, especially these last few months when Mary desperately missed her sister Kay. Your understanding, compassion and care has been comforting to her family and is deeply appreciated. LAURA JANE PREISLER On Friday, July 2, 2004 Laura Preisler passed away at the age of 25 years. She leaves to cherish her memory her mother Karen; father Conrad and stepmother Linda; son Payton in Minneapolis; sister Corinne in Montreal; brother Gordon in Toronto; aunt Alice; and special friends, Brandy, Sara and Joanne. She was predeceased by her brother Ron in 1993 and son Morgan in 1996. The love Laura felt for her family and friends will always be remembered. BERTHA PROTASIEWICH On Saturday, July 3, 2004, Bertha Protasiewich, aged 91 years passed away. Bertha was predeceased by her mother, Emilia in 1965 and her father Karl in 1970. She was also predeceased by her brother Walter and her sister Anne. She is survived by her brother Michael (Mickey); her niece Donna McVety; her nephews, Carl and Danny Protasiewich, Wayne Jackiew; and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. Bertha was born
on January 22, 1913 in Winnipeg. She completed her high school education as well as receiving her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education from the University of Manitoba. Bertha then taught for six years after graduating and then began working in the Social Work Department of the Winnipeg School Division for 22 years. After completing her work with the Social Work Department she began substitute teaching for five years prior to her retirement in 1981. Bertha was originally a member of the St. Vladimir and Olga Parish, where she participated in choir and drama. Bertha then became and was a member of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish since its inception. At the Blessed Virgin Mary she was also a choir member as well as being the resident organist for over 35 years. In addition, Bertha also taught Sunday school and Catechism at Blessed Virgin Mary as well. Bertha was also a wedding organist and soloist and wedding instructor for over 35 years in the City of Winnipeg. Bertha was also a member of the Institute Prosvita, where she was a choir member as well as a member of the Drama Department. Prayers will be said on Thursday, July 8 at 7:00 p.m. at Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, 965 Boyd Ave. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Friday, July 9 at 10:00 a.m. also at the Church with Rt. Rev. Mitrat Gregory Oucharyk officiating. Interment to follow in All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bertha's memory to a charity of one's choice. HELEN RIBBLE (nee MARAK) It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Helen Ribble on Saturday, July 3, 2004, at the Grace General Hospital at the age of 80 years. STANLEY SCARR August 24, 1911 - July 4, 2004 After a short illness, Stanley Scarr passed away at Oakview Place Personal Care Home. Stan was born
in Barrow-on-Furness, Walney Island, England and immigrated to Canada in 1912 with his parents and brothers. Stan was predeceased by his beloved wife of 73 years, Ivy, in April 2004; his mother Elizabeth Scarr; his father Robert Scarr; and two brothers, Leonard and Cyril. He is survived by his son Stanley R. (Lorraine); daughters, Bernice Parbery (Gordon), Barbara Picken (Robert), Diane (Becker) Brown (Jack); eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law. Prior to his retirement in 1976, Stan was employed as a street car and bus operator with The Winnipeg Transit Commission for 30 years. He was an excellent handyman, enjoyed doing his crossword puzzles, motoring trips with his wife Ivy, and many years of 5 pin bowling in a mixed bowling league, and golf with "The Dun Workin Duffers". His bowling and golf continued until his late 80s. Cremation has taken place and in accordance with Dad's wishes there will be no funeral service; however a private interment service will be held at a later date. If desired, donations in Stan's memory may be made to a charity of one's choice. Many thanks to the nurses and staff of the third floor north, Oakview Place for the care and compassion shown to Stan during his short stay there. "Rest in Peace, Dad. We love you." NOREEN SLOAN Peacefully on July 4, 2004 at the Riverview Health Centre, after a battle with cancer, Noreen Sloan (aged 78) went to her eternal home. She was predeceased by her son Christopher. WILLIAM "BILL" GEORGE SMEE We celebrate the life of William George Smee who passed away after a brief illness on July 2, 2004 in his 87th year. Bill was born
in Brandon, Manitoba on September 27, 1917 to Leonard Robert and Lilian Cecilia of London, England. He grew up in Brandon and lived in Prince Albert, SK, North Battleford, SK, and Edmonton, AB before settling in Winnipeg in the mid-fifties. In 1958, he married (Margaret) Wilhelmina Conquergood and they had two children, Douglas and Frances. He served in England in the RCAF during the Second World War and had a lifelong love of sports and music. In his youth he excelled in both tennis and badminton winning a shelf full of trophies. Bill played the piano, saxophone and clarinet and performed with several dance bands in his younger years. Bill had a full and varied working life and spent many years in the insurance industry. He was with A.W. Talbot Agency and with Milnco Insurance up until his retirement in 1987. Bill found his greatest joy in life with his family and friends and, in particular, with his two grandchildren. His Wednesday lunches with Bill and Max were a source of much enjoyment, as were the weekly family dinners at Sorrentos. Thanks to all our friends at Sorrentos for their kind support. Bill was predeceased by his brother Douglas Leonard, his brothers-in-law, Tim Sumida, Don MacKay, Ross Conquergood, Wally Kerr, Tom Patterson, Harold Green, sister-in-law Flora Green and nephew Grant Smee. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Wilhelmina, son Douglas (Karen), daughter Frances, grandson Calum, granddaughter Moira, sister Mona MacKay, sisters-in law, Daphne Smee, Jean Patterson, Murdena Kerr, Shirley White (Walter) and many relatives and friends in Canada, the States and overseas. MARY ANNE SMITH (nee BOHM) March 25, 1938 - June 22, 2004 Anne was predeceased by her father Thomas Bohm in 1963; by her mother Mary in 1970 and her good friend Mike Robert. She is survived by her brother Tom Bohm (Louise), nephews, Tom (Marci), Glen (Buntha) and grandnieces, Malia and Malika, all of Winnipeg, MB; brother Jim Bohm (Maureen) of Langruth, MB, nephews, Ryan of White Rock, BC, Kevin of Winnipeg, niece Cheryl Rosling (Bruce) and grandniece Lauren of Gladstone, MB. She is also survived by aunts, Fina Lasson of Langruth and Alice Lasson of Portage la Prairie, MB. Anne was a member for 25 years of the Ladies Auxiliary of Comox Legion No. 160. She was employed by CIBC for many years. Anne enjoyed doing cross-stitch, crocheting and travelling - especially to Manitoba to visit her family. Anne was a very giving and loving person who will be ever remembered and sadly missed by all who knew her. According to Anne's wishes, cremation has taken place. DOROTHY BEATRICE STEVENSON Dorothy Beatrice Stevenson, widow of the late David Alexander Stevenson, passed away quietly after a brief illness at Deer Lodge Centre on July 2, 2004 at the age of 103, with family by her side. Dorothy was born
in Canning Town, London, England on September 22, 1900, daughter of Edward and Alice Duce. At the age of six, her family immigrated to Canada and settled in Wawanesa, MB. There she grew up along with her four brothers and two sisters. Upon graduating from high school she took a secretarial course in Brandon and then returned to Wawanesa where she was a secretary with the Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company for 12 years. On February 5, 1930, she married her late husband, Alex and together they lived in Lauder, Moore Park, Arborg and Morris where Alex was a grain buyer for Manitoba Pool Elevators. In 1948, Alex was transferred to Winnipeg. They lived for a short time on Home Street before moving to their home on Windermere Avenue where she lived for 48 years. Over the years, Dorothy was very active in the various communities in which she lived, singing in the church choir and participating in the local community events and women's associations. She particularly enjoyed curling and curled at the Pembina Curling Club for many years. Dorothy and Alex were involved in the formation of Windermere United Church. When that congregation was disbanded, they became active members of Fort Garry United Church. Dorothy is survived by her children, Margaret (John) Mundie, Jack (Velma), Myrna Sharpe, and Ken (June); eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Left to cherish her memory are sisters, Eleanor Duce and Jean (Art) Snuggs; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her four brothers (Charles, Fred, Arthur and George), daughter-in-law Ina Stevenson and son-in-law Sigurd Sharpe. The family wishes to express their appreciation for the care given to Dorothy by the staff at Fort Garry Care Centre and 3 East at Deer Lodge Centre. A celebration service of Dorothy's remarkable life will be held on Saturday, July 10 at 11:00 a.m. at Fort Garry United Church, 800 Point Rd., with Cathy Kinsman officiating. ISAAC UNRAU Isaac F. (Ike) Unrau, born
June 9, 1921 in southern Manitoba, went to be with the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on July 3, 2004 in Calgary, AB at the age of 83 years, with Diane and Rick by his side. Ike leaves to mourn, his wife Diane of 40 years; son Richard (Tanya); and grandsons, Kyle and Luke, who were the apples of his eye. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Gladys (Ron), Linda, Shirley (Gordon), Bev (Lawrence); sons, Brian (Eleanor) and Cecil (Christine); as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son Ted in 1987. He will be sadly missed by all that looked to him as "Dad". Ike served his country in the Second World War. A special thanks to all the nurses at the Rockyview General Hospital, ward 57, who were like part of the family, especially Connie, Susan and Rebecca who stayed with him to the end.
