ROLAND DUBE

June 23, 2004

ROLAND DUBE 1916 - 2004 (HAYWOOD TRANSFER) Peacefully, on Thursday, June 17, 2004, at the Boundary Trails Health Centre, Roland passed away at the age of 88. Roland leaves in loving memory, his wife of 64 years, Mary (Boucher); four children, Louis (Mary), Denis, Irene, Albert; ten grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Roland was predeceased by his son Raymond and his daughter-in-law Helene (Smith), his parents, Joseph and Marie (Lebel); his brothers, Oscar, Normand and Augustin; sisters, Eva Carriere, Laura Martel, Elmire Turcotte and Jeanne Gagne. He is also lovingly remembered by his nephews and nieces. Roland touched the lives of many. He taught us values of hard work and honesty, always having a smile and enjoying the simple things in life. Visits from family and friends were highly appreciated. Roland was born icon in Quebec. The Dube family were on their way to Alberta when a family illness caused them to homestead in Manitoba. Their first attempt was in St. Adolphe (where his mother is buried) and finally in St. Georges, MB. Roland was five when his mother died and was orphaned at the young age of 12. Roland stayed in a convent for a few years and then lived with his older sister in Otterburne for a short period. At the age of 14, he then started to work for local farmers paid only by room and board. He learned the value of hard work early in life, doing various types of work. He relocated closer to his brothers Gus and Oscar in Lac du Bonnet. There he met the love of his life Mary. He had been working in bush camps around the Pine Falls area until he was able to purchase a truck, from which he began his trucking career. Roland and Mary were married on June 29, 1940 and relocated to Haywood. There Roland purchased the Haywood transfer from his brother-in-law, Omer Gagne. It is in Haywood that Roland and Mary raised the five children and dedicated his lifelong service to the area. They were both very proud when Raymond took over the transfer business in 1967, growing it to a five truck, transfer and milk delivery operation. Roland was instrumental in bringing dairy farming to the area and many fondly remember him. Family, pets, fishing and hunting occupied his favourite times. This became an opportunity for his family and friends to enjoy Roland's company. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at the Notre Dame Foyer (Chez Nous ward) and all the personal home care staff. The care and compassion given to Roland by all the caregivers is greatly appreciated. Funeral service will be held on Friday, June 25 at 10:30 a.m. in Haywood Roman Catholic Church, prayers at 10:00 a.m. Fr. Jean-Jacques Serceau will preside in the celebration of Roland's life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba. Adam's Funeral Home of Notre Dame de Lourdes, Manitoba in care of arrangements.
