Helen Routly
HELEN ISOBEL ROUTLY March 1, 1915 - February 4, 2001 Suddenly, as the result of a fall, Helen Isobel Routly, widow of William Routly, passed away at the age of 85. Mom will be remembered with great love by her children, Lawrence and Sherri and their children, Elliott, Breanne, and Myles; Joan and Gary Swaffer and their children, Jill and Mark; Gay and Dwight Stewart and their children, Jonathan and Elizabeth; and Heather Mousseau. Mom was born
and raised in Bird's Hill, later moving to Edmonton with her father. She attended Normal School and worked as a teacher in the North and at the Shrine Hospital in Winnipeg. In 1944 she and Dad married, moving back to Bird's Hill when he left the Air Force at the end of the war. Mom was always active in the community -- as a Girl Guide Commissioner, Sunday School teacher at Bird's Hill United Church, member of the East St. Paul Home and School Association, and a substitute teacher. Upon Dad's retirement, they moved to Winnipeg, enjoying winters in Mesa and summers at West Hawk Lake. Mom was an active, outgoing person who could, as one niece observed, "talk to anyone about anything". She was a member of the seniors' club at her apartment block, took part in the aqua-fit program, and liked to get out for walks in good weather, particularly down at the lake. She was an avid reader and, as her eyesight began to make that difficult, began knitting the afghans that will be treasured by all her children and grandchildren. The family would like to thank the caring and compassionate staff at the Concordia Hospital. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at John Black United Church, 898 Henderson Hwy., on Thursday, February 8 at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Manitoba Cancer Society. Arrangements entrusted to Klassen Funeral Chapel, 338-0331.
