Margaret Ethier
MARGARET SCHWAB (nee MARGUERITE ETHIER; a.k.a. MARGARET HARRISON) On January 22, 2001, Marge passed away at the St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 75. She was predeceased by her loving husband Jack Schwab; parents, Telesphore and Stephanie Ethier; brother Patrick; and sister Rita Obelnicky. She will be sadly missed by surviving brothers, Xavier and Peter (Margaret) Ethier; stepson Jim Schwab; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. In keeping with Marge's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 3, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Parish, 510 River Ave., in Osborne Village. Flowers are gratefully declined. Should friends so desire, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

MARY FORTNAM On January 22, 2001, Mary Fortnam peacefully passed away at the Grace Hospital at the age of 78 years. She was born
in Ashington Northumberland, England, on March 25, 1922. She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her husband Sidney A. Fortnam; her two sons, Brian and Raymond Fortnam; daughter-in-law Joanne Fortnam; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews in Ashington, England, and Winnipeg; many family members in England; and special friend Joan Skelton. Mary and Sidney served in the English Army with the Heavy Anti-Aircraft Artillery during the Second World War. Mary loved gardening, especially her flower gardens, and knitting, which she gave to family. Mary's family was important to her, those here and in England, whom she missed very much. Many thanks to the staff at the Grace Hospital who took care of Mary Fortnam. Memorial services will take place Monday, January 29, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. at Hope Lutheran Church, 1400 Pembina Highway, with Reverend Karl Koslowsky officiating. FLORENTINE GAGNON (nee BOURCIER) Suddenly at her home, Thursday, January 25, 2001, we announce with sorrow the peaceful passing of our mother and memere at the age of 80 years young. Mom was predeceased by our dad, Antonio in February 1970; and two sons, Alexandre in August 1975, and Gerard in March 1997. She was also predeceased by her twin sister Yvette Gobeil in April of 1997, as well as three brothers and two other sisters. Florentine was born
in Vassar, MB in 1920 and lived her young life there until she met our dad, Antonio, and married at the age of 16. They started to build their family. They had a baker's dozen, seven boys and six girls: Rolande Nault (Armand), Marie-Jeanne Proulx (Arthur), Adele Ross (Raymond), Angele Patkau (Bill), Marcel (Pat), Henri, Denis (Sherli), Claude (Cindy), Lorraine Stuski (Patrick), Robert, Claudette Nault (Gabriel). They called St. Boniface their home. She is also survived by a multitude of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Mom has only one surviving sibling, Therese Beauchamp, and relatives too numerous to mention. She will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends at L'ACCUIEL Colombian, and a very special friend, Eva Backeland, Mom really loved you, Eva. Mom enjoyed her junkets to the Gambling Joints with her friends. She enjoyed her multitude of crafts and if you needed any wool, she has a bucket and a half. She loved her treasures and treasures she had in abundance. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, January 29 at 10:00 a.m. in the St. Boniface Cathedral, 190 ave de la cathedral, with Msgr. Albert Frechette presiding. Viewing will take place one half hour prior to the service. A private family interment will take place at a later date in the St. Boniface Cemetery, where she will rest with Dad. Adieu chers enfants cheris, Parents, et amis. Sol Gerb
SOL GERB It is with deep sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Sol Gerb, aged 79, on January 4, 2001, with his wife by his side. Sol will be sadly missed by Anne, his wife of 40 years; his son Jack and daughter-in-law Anita of Toronto; his daughter Darlene "Flynn" and son-in-law Michael; and his granddaughter Halley. Sol is survived by his sisters, Fanny Mock, Shirley Baron, and Marsha Garfinkel; sisters-in-law, Laurice Gerb, Theresa Maryk (Victor); brother-in-law Wally Muzylowski (Sheila); numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Sol was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Dora Gerb; brother Max; sister Clara Katz; two nephews; and four brothers-in-law. Born in Poland, Sol immigrated to Winnipeg in 1937. He was a businessman at heart and worked in the fur and garment industry most of his life. He co-founded Gerb Enterprises in 1974, where he spent almost every day until his retirement in 1984. Sol's first priority was taking care of his family. His hard work and dedication allowed his wife and children every opportunity to fulfill their dreams and enjoy a comfortable life. Upon retirement, Sol enjoyed time with his wife. They were most often together, travelling, shopping, and visiting. He became a member of Chevra Mishnayes Synagogue where he met with his friends for the morning minyan, and the Monash Legion where he played cards Friday afternoons. Sol was full of life, loved a good kibbitz and a good laugh. He took great pleasure in watching his family enjoy themselves. His granddaughter Halley was his pride and joy. He touched many people in his life without even realizing it, and he will be sadly missed. He wanted to live until he died. He did. Funeral services were held at the B'Nay Abraham Synagogue on January 8, with interment at the B'Nay Abraham Cemetery. Pallbearers were Al Katz, Harv Mock, Jack Solomon, Sid Ritter, Bobby Goldberg, and Bruce Kimelman. The Monash Legion provided an Honour Guard.
Helen Hay
HELEN MITCHELL HAY Peacefully on Tuesday, January 23, 2001, Helen (Nellie) Hay passed away at the Victoria General Hospital, at the age of 98 years. Helen was born
September 6, 1902 in Newmacher, Scotland, the eldest child of Thomas Davidson and Mary (Gray) Davidson. At the age of five she came to Canada with her parents where they farmed near Elie, MB. While visiting in Winnipeg, Helen met another transplanted Scot, George Winton Hay, and they married in 1931. Helen "retired" from the Health Sciences Centre Dietary Department in 1973 and then became a volunteer with the White Cross Guild at H.S.C. In 1989 she was recognized for her 1000 hours of volunteer work. She was also a Life Member of the Sons of Scotland, Melrose Camp No. 126. In her "Golden Years" Helen loved to travel. She made a memorable trip back to her birthplace in Scotland and visited with family there. Other adventures were trips to Alaska, California and twice she travelled by train to Churchill to see the polar bears. Helen is survived by her daughter Lilian (Charles) Cords of Grandview, MB; grandchildren, Bruce (Phebe) Christian of Lloydminster, AB, Suraya (Susan) Christian and partner Peter Marks of Thompson, MB, Mark Christian of Winnipeg; great-grandchildren Benjamin, Stephen, Daniel, Leanna and Cassandra Christian and Jasmin Maria Marks. Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband George in 1967 and her brother Charles Davidson and sister Lillian Leslie. A Service of Remembrance will be held in Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel, 1858 Portage Ave. for family and friends at a later date. The family would like to thank the staff at 285 Pembina, Home Care, especially Cheryl, the Charleswood Adult Day Club and the members of Melrose Camp No. 126 for their care and concern for Helen. LAWRENCE HERBERT (LARRY) NEWMAN At Sunnybrook Hospital, Toronto, on Friday, January 26, 2001, in his 58th year. Beloved husband of Donna (nee Graham), and dear father of Hilary and her husband Frank Lintzen. Loving son of Babs and the late Ted Newman. Much loved brother of Barbara and her husband Dennis Roberts and their children Sean, Shelley and Christopher; Lynne Newman and her daughter Kim Newman-Phelps; Joady and her husband Scott Cousineau and their children Kyle and Kendra. Larry was a graduate of Ridley College, St. Catharines, Ontario, and studied Architecture at the University of Manitoba. He worked with the family company, Newman Brothers Construction of St. Catharines, subsequently moving to Toronto where he worked as Project Design Manager for Tricon Global Restaurants. EDWARD JOHN HIGGS Edward went home to be with his Lord and Saviour, on Wednesday, January 24, 2001 at the age of 80 years. He was predeceased by his loving wife Marion in 1989. Edward will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his sons, Peter (Janet) and Bruce; his daughter Janet; grandchildren, Valerie Hill (Erron), Corey and Brent. He served in the armed forces during the Second World War and in the Army reserves for many years after. He was a longtime resident of Montreal, where he worked for the Department of National Defence for over 30 years. He was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 125 in Montreal North. The family wishes to thank the staff of Tuxedo Villa Nursing Home for their care and compassion during Edward's stay. A very special thank you to Pastor Mark Hughes for leading him to the Lord. ROBERT HULL Robert Hull best friend of Ethel Clarke passed away January 21, 2001. Bob was born
in Winnipeg, October 12, 1911 to Henry and Annie Lea. He was a giant of a man who loved people and was always cheerful. Bob drove Winnipeg Transit for 38 years. After he retired, he would often ride downtown, shop and walk Portage Ave. He enjoyed Bingo and would meet friends at the casino almost daily. Bob had good health until the past year. Although still active, he had to curtail most of his outside activities. He always greeted you with a smile and "I'm still breathing". Rest in peace Bob, we will all miss you.

BERNICE IWANICKI (nee GERAS) passed away peacefully, on January 25, 2001 at Riverview Health Centre, at the age of 81, after a brief illness. She was predeceased by her husband Bill in 1994. Bernice leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Nina Iwanicki, Christine Buchko (Glenn); and her beloved grandchildren, Michael, Tyler and Laura. She is also survived by her sisters, Frances, Adeline and Angela. Bernice was a lifelong member of St. John Cantius Church and an active member of the C.W.L. Her gardening, reading and tending to the wild birds filled her days with joy. The family wishes to thank the staff at Riverview Health Centre, especially Diane, Alina, Tony and Mardi for all their care and compassion. in Notre Dame de Lourdes, MB on January 8, 1930 and spent her young life in Flin Flon, MB. The family moved to Maillardville, BC in 1944. She then entered the novitiate of The Sisters of the Child Jesus in 1945. Remaining to forever cherish her memory are the Sisters of the Child Jesus in Canada, France, Belgium, Argentina, Chile, Ecquador, Vietnam, and Africa; her brother Max (Gloria); her sisters, Therese (Mel), Marguerite (Ernie), Monique, Lyn (Mike) and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Anna and Albert Jacquiard; her sister Anne Senecal, and many of her Religious Sisters. Prayers will be held on Sunday, January 28 at 7:00 p.m. in St. Paul the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, 2400 Portage Ave. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 29 at 10:00 a.m. also in the church with Rev.
