Touchburn (Huber), Catherine Eugenie

Catherine Eugenie Touchburn, of Grandview Nursing Home, Thunder Bay, Ontario, passed away quietly in her sleep at McKellar Hospital in Thunder Bay, Ontario on Thursday, April 10, 2003, following a brief illness. Born 1914 in Edmonton, Alberta, to Mabel Anderson and Arthur Touchburn, the founders of Tichborne's Agency, Catherine grew up in Fort Frances. After completing business college, she worked in Fort Frances and Winnipeg, until her marriage to Albert George Huber of Lydiatt Manitoba in 1940. They resided in Winnipeg until 1944, when they moved to Fort Frances. In 1970, she moved to Thunder Bay where she became involved with many groups such as the Canadian Consumers groups, Amnesty International, Canadian Hearing Society, and women’s advocacy groups. She worked as a caregiver for the Red Cross, the CNIB, and Central Park Lodge. Catherine never tired of learning, and continued to take college and university courses in history, political science, women’s issues, and martial arts. An ardent supporter of the arts at all levels, she had been involved with Little Theatre in Fort Frances. A fervent reader, she was an astute observer of national and international affairs. Her heart lay with oppressed peoples of the world and the struggle for rights and benefits of all workers. Catherine's irrepressible memory of names and events fuelled extensive works in genealogy by her family members. She will be forever remembered in the hearts and minds of her son Cliff Huber (Shelley) of Kakabeka Falls, grandsons Brian Huber (Leanne) of Thunder Bay, and Brad Huber (Brandy) Calgary, great grandsons Tyler and Tanner of Calgary, her sister, Donna Norell of St. Catherines, ON, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Patricia Pleimling, of International Falls in 1999. Cremation and private family memorials have taken place. Remembrances of her may be kindly donated to a charity of one’s choice.

Axelson, Daisy Florence

Daisy passed away peacefully at Bethammi Nursing Home, her residence for the past 2 1/2 years. She was surrounded by the love of those who were with her and those who were there in spirit. As we celebrate the life of our Mom and our friend, we will remember a beautiful lady who deeply loved our Dad, Wilfred Axelson. Mom and Dad are together again. Daisy is survived by her children; Terry Axelson (Judy), Thorine Goodall, Judith Allen (Norm). Mom was a multi-talented person who developed these talents over many years volunteering with the Salvation Army during the war, as a Cub Leader; a very active member of Knox United Church. She worked alongside Wilf and special friends building a road to Hawkeye Lake and developing a cottage there. We, her children and grandchildren, Kristan Miclash (Randy), Dale Axelson (Elisabeth), Lorne Goodall (Debbie), Sophia Kelly, Alan Goodall, Erik Allen, Curt Allen, Jake Allen have many special memories of our times together at the yellow camp on the point at Hawkeye Lake. Their legacy remains forever in the naming of Axelson Road. Daisy was active for many years with the Mount Baldy Ski Area and together with Wilf they operated The Mount Baldy Ski Shop starting with their home on Shuniah Street and ending at Grenville Avenue where together they owned and operated Axelson's Plumbing and Heating until retirement. Daisy made many friends through her interests in painting, golf, playing bridge, travel and just socializing. She is also survived by seven great grandchildren; Kyle Miclash, twins Sofia and Linnea Axelson, Liam, Aidan, and Garrett Goodall and Sophie Allen; her sister Bessie Symington, and numerous nieces and nephews. Daisy was predeceased by her daughter Doreen, husband Wilf, her twin brother Jimmie and her sisters Nellie, Lily, Lucy and Violet.

Mildred Elsie, passed away peacefully at home in White Rock, B.C. in her 96th year, April 8, 2003. Born in Winnipeg, moved to Fort William in 1927, married Edmund MacKinnon in 1929, who predeceased her in 1993. Also predeceased by her brother James in 1995, daughter Mary in 1930; sons Donald in 1996, Edmund in 1998; daughter-in-law Cathie in 1975. Fondly remembered by her surviving family, John in White Rock, B.C., Robert (Lorraine) in Red Rock, ON; Ernest in Kitchener; daughter Elizabeth (Tom Charlton) in Ottawa; daughter-in-law Audrey in Chilliwack, B.C; 11 grandchildren (Mary in Thunder Bay); 15 great-grandchildren (Liam in Thunder Bay); nieces and nephews. While in Thunder Bay Mil worked for several years as a Financial Secretary for Lawyer Bernard Black. She was active in the community - in the CWL as secretary for presidents Badanni, Carrol, Hinsperger and Seppola - in the Hospital Auxilaries, especially Westmount where she was a volunteer care-giver. Mil and Ed moved to White Rock in 1975 where she was a founding member of the Judy La Marsh Club as well as being active in the CWL, Council of Canadians, Liberal Party and Osteoporosis Society. Always a happy person, she loved flowers, birds, jokes, her family. She will be missed. Funeral has taken place and interment is in the Garden of Gethsemani Cemetery, Surrey, B.C.
Varga (nee Perry), Barbara Bernice

Mrs. Barbara Bernice Varga (nee Perry), age 58 years, resident of R.R.#15 Onion Lake Road, passed away unexpectedly following a courageous battle with a heart condition, in Thunder Bay Regional Hospital - McKellar on Sunday, April 13, 2003 with her loving husband Oscar by her side.
Born in St. Thomas, Ontario, she had been employed by Zegil’s Floor Mart in sales, as a bookkeeper for Trueline Value and later by Walmart in the Customer Service Department. She loved working with the public and always had a smile for everyone she met. Barb had a vibrant personality and enjoyed her life with Oscar to the fullest. She enjoyed her hobbies especially making wine and crafts. Barb spent many wonderful times with her husband Oscar camping, fishing and hunting. Everything they did, Barb and Oscar seemed to do together, including Street-Rodding and traveling back to the 50’s in their 1931 Essex. She was a very devoted wife, and mother throughout her life. Barb had two very special cats, “Mickey and Minnie” which were an important part of her life. Barbara’s main pleasures in life were her home and especially her family and friends.
Barbara is survived by her husband Oscar; two daughters: Joyce Stafford, Christina (Dean) Stafford, both of Aylmer, ON; two brothers: Carl (Louise) Perry of Aylmer, ON, Larry (Sandy) Perry of London, ON; two sisters: Ruth (Aurele) Gallant of Aylmer, ON and Linda (James) Grace of London, ON. She was predeceased by her parents Cora and Elmore Perry.
According to Barbara’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and a Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, April 17th at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, officiated by Rev. Lloyd Ivany. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday evening (TONIGHT) from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made in Barbara’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Alice Irene (nee Clarke), passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Saturday, May 24, 2003, at the Guelph General Hospital. Loving and devoted wife of Dr. Otto Salonen. She will be sadly missed by her children, Jane and David Ruttan of Markham, David and Kim Salonen of Mississauga, Mark and Carolyn Salonen of New Hamburg and Lisa Salonen MacKay and Dan MacKay of Markham. Loving grandmother of Amanda Ruttan, Dana and Erin Salonen, Eric and Natasha Salonen, and Megan and Matthew MacKay. Dear sister of Lois (Len) Walker and Donna (Don) Craig. Marc Marcino passed away peacefully at his residence in Birchwood Terrace Nursing Home on Friday May 23, 2003. He was born
in Crocus, Manitoba on January 21, 1924. He was predeceased by his wife Phyl, parents Mike and Catherine Marcino, brothers Frank, John and Steve. Marc is survived by his brother Peter and wife Shirley of Kenora, his two sons Murray (Bernice) of Cornwall, Ontario and Wayne (Debbie) of Kenora; four grandchildren Mark, Debbie and Randy of British Columbia and Allin of Dryden; two sisters-in-law Dora of Thunder Bay and Shirley of Vancouver B.C. and numerous nieces and nephews. Marc served in the military during the Second World War. He also served as a Councillor for the Town of Kenora. Marc was a Life Member of the Kenora Lions Club and also was a Past District Governor of the Lions Clubs. He also was one of the founding directors of the Canadian Lions Foundation. He also served as President of the Kenora District Chamber of Commerce and the Northwestern Associated Chambers of Commerce. Marc was an active volunteer for a variety of events in Kenora over many years. A Memorial service was held at the Kenora Community Funeral Home on Wednesday May 28, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday June 2, 2003 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Cemetery, Oliver Road, Thunder Bay.

Mr. Mitchell (Smokey) Wyrozub passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 27, 2003. Born May 1, 1919 in Fort William, Mitchell was a life long resident of this area, receiving his education in local schools and working on his father's farm in Blake Township until 1939. During World War II Mitchell enlisted in the L.S.R. Regiment. In 1948 he married Alma Hoben. After the war, Mitchell drove trucks for 39 years, retiring in 1981 at the age of 62. Mitchell loved spending time with his family and working in his garden. The family was particularly proud of an incident that took place March 1963. While driving home from the city he noticed a large dog mauling a 7 year old boy. He chased the dog off, then rushed the boy 11 1/2 miles to the hospital where he recovered. Mitchell is survived by his wife Alma, son David (Marilyn), grandchildren Jodi (Randy) Zyla and Jason, great-grandchildren Kaylie, Kimberly, and Keana, brothers Ben (Dorothy) and Albert (Olive), sisters Lillie and Rita, as well as many nieces, nephews and other relatives. Mitchell was predeceased by his parents Karl and Mary, brothers Edward and Gordon, and sister Anne Reid. Funeral Services for Mitchell will be held Friday, May 30, 2003 in the Jenkens Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Carl Triskle officiating. Interment following in Stanley Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 29th, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00p.m. at Jenkens Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers donations to the Lung Association would be greatly appreciated.

Linda Dale Larocque, age 54 years, passed away peacefully with family and friends at her side in Thunder Bay Regional Hospital-Port Arthur General on Wednesday May 28, 2003 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Linda was born
in Port Arthur on October 18, 1948 and was a lifetime resident. She worked for many years at the Port Arthur Clinic. She was an avid golfer who enjoyed reading and spending time with family and friends. She especially loved the time spent with her daughter Cindy who was her pride and joy. She will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by her daughter Cindy, sisters Brenda (Louis) Almquist and Debbie (Stan Carmichael) Turner Broad, brothers: Eddie Broad, Gordie Broad and Gary (Bev) Broad; dear friends Vickie Brigo and Iris LeBlanc as well as by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and close friends. She was predeceased by her parents Helmer and Regina Broad. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 31st at 11:00 a.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street, with Rev. Lloyd Ivany officiating. Services will be complete in the chapel. As expressions of sympathy memorials to the Northern Cancer Research Foundation would be appreciated.
Agnes Rose (Kelly) Potan

Born in Onigaming First Nations in 1957 to parents Marie and Paul Kelly. She grew up in Onigaming and attended school in Fort Frances, Ontario. She worked at Indian Affairs, Native Women’s Association and The Thunder Bay Aboriginal Headstart Nursery School until her illness. She was very gifted in making wreaths and dream catchers. Agnes had a smile of gold. She enjoyed living life and her laughter filled the rooms with happiness. You can always count on her, and her gentle voice was soothing to everyone she talked to. Agnes is survived by her loving husband Don, children Stanley, Sophie and Samantha; mother Marie, sisters Lorna, Gloria (Mattie) and Lorraine; brothers Billy (Liza), Richard (Bonita) and Buffalo (Karen); numerous aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Agnes is predeceased by her son Elliot, a sister, a brother and her Dad Paul. You are in our thoughts and prayers. You always understood and listened. You showed unconditional love, trust and cared for us. We thank you Mom. We love you with all our hearts. We want to let you know we’re so grateful to have someone so special like you in our lives and will cherish you forever. As our lives go on our memories of you will be in our hearts forever. Your loving sisters will always remember “Sleeping Beauty”,Rest in Peace. Visitatation will be held on Friday (tonight) May 30, 2003 from 7-9 pm in the Blake Funeral Chapel. Removal will then be made to Onigaming First Nation (Nestor Falls, Ont.) for visitation on Sunday and funeral services on Monday June 2, 2003. Jane Elsann (neé Chase), passed away peacefully with her mother and sisters by her side on Thursday, May 22, 2003 at LaVerendrye Hospital Fort Frances, after a courageous battle with cancer. Jane was born
March 24, 1940 in Fort Frances and lived most of her life in Northwestern Ontario. She had a varied and interesting working life that exemplified her ability to adapt to all that she encountered. Jane worked for Bell Canada, Port Arthur Motors, Fairweathers and the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital Her most recent career was as a hairstylist. Growing up in a musical family in Fort Frances, Jane became an accomplished violinist. In her teens she won the prestigious gold medal from the Royal Conservatory of Music, two years in a row. Jane was a member of Beta Sigma Fi and enjoyed staying active. In the past year, she was embraced by pastor Sandy McEvoy and The Joy of Life Fellowship who have hope and the will to “fight the good fight”. Jane was an avid reader and enjoyed the outdoors, but treasured anytime, spent with her mother, children, grandchildren and sisters. She was very proud of her children but developed a special bond with her daughter, and very best friend, Wendy. She will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by her daughter Wendy (Bob), son Guy (Maria), grandchildren Sarah and Matthew, son Todd (Clara), grandchild Chloe, mother Geraldine Chase, sisters Gerrine Mott, Marlene (Harold) Armstrong, Joanne (Doug) McCaig, numerous nieces and nephews and Aunt Elsann (Rod) MacLeod. Jane was predeceased by her father Norman Chase. A celebration of Jane's life took place on Tuesday, May 27, 2003 at the Joy of Life Fellowship in Fort Frances. Many thanks to the doctors, nurses and caregivers, at The Thunder Bay Regional Hospital, Port Arthur Site and at the LaVerendrye Hospital in Fort Frances. Specials thanks to Grandma Chase, Joanne, Doug, Patti-Jo and many close friends for their support. Assunta Louise Jackow died peacefully, after a long and active life, at her place of residence the Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg, Winnipeg, Manitoba on March 19th, 2003. This is St. Joseph’s Day Patron Saint of a happy death. Sue, the name we all knew and loved her by was born
to Emilio & Theresa Marino on March 26th, 1923 in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Sue was preceded in death by her husband Gene Jackow, parents Emilio & Theresa Marino, her sister Filomena DeLevachio (Miami, FL), and Mary Marino (Hallendale, FL), her brothers James (Cleveland, OH), Frank (Santa Barbara, CA), Angelo (Canoga Park, CA), Emilio Jr. (Windsor, ON), and Mario (Miama, FL). Her sister Gloria and brother Val Marino survive her. A memorial service is planned for late July or early August in Thunder Bay with a Burial in St. Patrick's Cemetery. A notice of the exact date will be published at that time.

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend. Born in New Westminster, B.C. on June 22, 1956, son of Irmgard and the late Neil Campbell. Moved to Kenora in 1958, Doug grew up in Keewatin and attended Keewatin Public School, continuing on to Lakewood Secondary School. Doug was employed by the Department of Highways for over 10 years and guided on the Grace Anne for approximately 8 years. After fulfilling his dream of building his own log home, Doug followed his passion and created Campbell Log Art Industries. His talent for story telling and love for the great outdoors was known by everyone whose life he touched. His love for country music, sled dogs, fishing, and hunting were enjoyed to the end, but most of all, his dedication to his wife and family will live in the hearts and memories of all his loved ones forever. Doug was a man of many words, but his appreciation for the simple things in life was truly an inspiration. Doug was predeceased by his father, Neil, his grandparents Herman and Wanda Plohman, grandparents Dave and Elise Campbell and Father In-law Howard Dowswell. Doug will be sorely missed by his wife Sandra (nee Dowswell), daughter Heather, son Neil, and their mother Lisa Cameron, Brothers Stewart (Karen), Jim (Donna) and Ian (Marci), Mother in-law Jean Doswell, Brother in-laws Rob Dowswell (Deb), Rick Dowswell (Gerry), Don Dowswell (Natalie), Sister in-law Susan Poulin (Paul) all of Thunder Bay. David John George Halstead, age 35 years, of 323 Leslie Avenue, passed away unexpectedly in Thunder Bay Regional Hospital - General on Friday, May 30th, 2003. David was born
in Port Arthur on February 7th, 1968, the eldest son of Carson and Isabel Halstead.
He enjoyed fishing with his father and they also shared an affinity for all living creatures. In his younger years, Dave was an excellent downhill skier, swimmer and enjoyed cross-country skiing. He spent a lot of time reading and also enjoyed gardening and yard work. David had a unique sense of humour, but only if you knew him well did you have the opportunity to share it.
David is survived by and will be forever missed by his parents Carson and Isabel Halstead; younger brother Ryan Halstead (Toronto) presently here; his special “gram” Minnie Halstead; uncles: Lance (Patti) Halstead, Rodney (Allison) Halstead, Bill Pringle (Nancy); aunts: Joanne Pringle, Catriona Christiansen Pringle, Heather Cumming, Debbie Hoyle and special great aunt, Isobel Comeau. Also surviving are numerous cousins: Kim, Doug, Doreen and Steven Pringle, Billy Pringle, Gary and Michelle Halstead, Allison Christiansen-Pringle, Tiffany and Christopher Halstead, Kelly and Robert Cumming and numerous other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his brother Andrew, in March of 1999; uncle Doug Pringle; two grandfathers: George Halstead and Douglas Pringle; grandmother Agnes Pringle; aunt Cheryl Pringle and cousin Kyle Cumming.
Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, June 4th at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, officiated by Rev. Lloyd Ivany. Interment will take place at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made in David’s memory to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada, Thunder Bay Chapter as David suffered with this disease since he was a teenager.

Lillian (June) Gilbert age 80 years, resident of Little Lepreau, New Brunswick (formally resided on Hwy 61, Thunder Bay) passed away on May 31, 2003. She is survived by her daughter Florence (Dale) Gushulak, sister Terry Pengelly, brothers Pat (Janet) Gilbert, Jack (Betty) Gilbert, grandchildren Terry Dawn (Wim) Tenhave, Gilbert Hollingsworth, Edward Gushulak. Great grandchildren Ashley, Steven and William Tenhave. Heather and Courtney Gushulak. She enjoyed the outdoors particularly fishing, guiding, hunting and trapping. In 1962 she was awarded the Trappers’ Trophy for all of Ontario. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Cremation has taken place.

Mr. Harold Poyhola, age 67 years, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 30th, 2003 with his family at his side. Harold was born
in Port Arthur on September 30, 1935 and was a lifetime resident.
Harold was employed by Good Year Tire (Bay Street) for thirty years, and retired early to enjoy fishing and to spend time in Graham at the family camp until his illness, where he spend the last eight months in hospital. He was a member of the Lion’s Club, Thunder Bay Metro.
Harold is survived by his wife Eeva; son Kevin (Liisa) Poyhola, grandchild Mike Poyhola; son Gary Poyhola; step-daughter Eunice (Curtis) Selagi; step-grandchildren Kristy, Chelsea, Braelyn Selagi; step-son Hal Heinaaho and step-grand Kyle Heinaaho of Chatham. Also surviving are numerous relatives in Finland. He was predeceased by his parents Sanni and Toimi Poyhola.
According to Harold’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, June 3rd at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, officiated by Rev. W. Lawrence Maunula. Visitaiton for family and friends will be held one hour prior to time of service. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made in Harold’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Society of Thunder Bay.

on May 28, 1915 in Port Arthur, ON where he was raised and educated. In 1963 he moved with his family to Calgary. After spending twelve years in Winnipeg, he returned to Calgary in 1979 to retire. Howard worked for Canadian Westinghouse for many years. He was a long-time member of the Rotary Club of Calgary South. Howard was very active enjoying many activities in the outdoors including fishing, boating, swimming, and cycling. Howard is survived by three daughters and two sons-in law, Diane Walker, Barb and Norman Myden, and Pam and Dave Rogers, all of Calgary; seven grandchildren, Jason and Lisa Walker, Garet (Michelle), Curtis (Lisa), and Steven Myden, and Sean and Evan Rogers. Howard was predeceased by his beloved wife Priscilla in 1992 and son-in-law Jim Walker in 2000. A celebration of Howard’s Life will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church (703 Heritage Drive SW) on Wednesday, June 4, 2003 at 1:00 P.M. with the Rev. Peter Coutts officiating.
