French, Muriel Marie
December 06, 2002
Mrs. Muriel Marie French [nee Coutts], age 85 years, of 1421 Cuthbertson Place, passed away at St. Joseph's Hospice December 3, 2002. She was born
in Unity, Saskatchewan, September 27, 1917. Muriel graduated from Saskatoon Normal School in 1936 and began teaching at Tousley School, Eyre, Saskatchewan. She then moved to Sudbury in 1939 and began working for the T. Eaton Company till 1943 when she married John E. French. Muriel and John moved their family to the Fort William area in 1946. She often spoke of the hard times they first encountered and the great people of Rosslyn . In 1949, Muriel and John opened the Einarson and French Block Plant on Syndicate Avenue. In 1963 they had a vision to build the Airlane Motor Hotel. Muriel's slogan "A Guest When You Enter A Friend When You Leave" became the basis for doing business at the Airlane. Muriel managed the Gift Shop and quietly assisted John with every change or improvement at the Airlane. It is true that behind every good man there is a great woman!
Her love for the game of curling sparked conversation at the dinner table, where John could be heard saying "Couttsie, you should have seen the shot last night" and from there the discussion would begin with the salt and pepper shakers, sugar bowl and any other dishes becoming "rocks" to clarify the play. Muriel even kept a close watch on the recent ladies skins game on TV.
Baseball, especially her favourite Blue Jays provided many evenings of entertainment and she could tell anyone the most up-to-date stats for the players. Muriel was an awesome duplicate bridge player and along with her partner were well-liked for their easy-going attitude to a game that is often taken too seriously. She loved to dance and recently became an avid square dancer, reserving Monday and Friday evenings for dancing with old and new friends.
Muriel and her friends were always travelling the world looking for new adventures from hot air ballooning to white water rafting. She kept in close touch with her roots and in 1985 provided information about her old school for a production of the film "Don't Shoot the Teacher".
All of these interests and the many friendships she cultivated were important to Muriel but the single most valued aspect of her life was her family.
Muriel is survived by daughters Heather French and Susan French; son Bill French and wife Diana, son-in-law Blake Haverluck and wife Pat; grandchildren Meredith Malloch, Kevin and Christopher Woit, Michael French, Patrick French (Marni) Sarah Gerry (Jason), Suzanne Marshall (Allan), Kim Haverluck; great grandchildren Jillian and Carmen Marshall; brothers Jim Coutts, Art Coutts (Connie); brother-in-law Glenn French (Elsie) and many nieces and nephews.
Muriel was predeceased by her husband John, daughter Donna Haverluck, mother and father Mary and James Coutts, and brother Frank Coutts.
A celebration of Muriel's life will be held on Monday, December 23, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at Wesley United Church. Inurnment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to The Thunder Bay Regional Hospital Foundation, St. Joseph's Foundation - Hospice Unit or the charity of your choice would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to the Sargent & Son Funeral Home.
