Lahti, Laila M.

Mrs. Laila M. Lahti age 77 years passed away in St. Joseph’s Hospital on Tuesday, October 1, 2002 with her children by her side. Born in Port Arthur, she had lived here most of her life. She was a longtime employee of Headway Builders and after retirement enjoyed camping at Mirror Lake and later weekly cribbage get–togethers with her close friends. She was predeceased by her husband Arthur W. Lahti in 1983.
Laila is survived by her daughter Nancy, Mrs. David Jokinen of Thunder Bay, son David and daughter-in-law Nan also of Thunder Bay, daughter Gayle, Mrs. Derek Tedder of Victoria, B.C., grandchildren Janis and Laura Jokinen, Arlene, John and Leia Lahti, Justene and Morgan Tedder, great grandchild Zoe Lahti, as well as other relatives and close friends.
Funeral services for the late Mrs. Laila M. Lahti will be held on Friday, October 4, 2002 at 1:30 PM in Faith Chapel, 193 Bruce Street with Pastor Gene Howard officiating. Private interment of cremated remains will take place at a later date in Riverside Cemetery.

MACDONALD
Mr. Donald Malcolm (Big Don) Macdonald, aged 90 years, resident of Thunder Bay, passed away peacefully in St. Joseph’s Hospice on Friday, September 27, 2002. Don was born
June 11, 1912 in Fort William. He attended Franklin Street Elementary School and Fort William Collegiate Institute. Don joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in June 1940. He was attached to the R.A.F. as a Wireless Operator and was one of a small number of Canadians to complete two tours of duty in World War II, flying 55 missions on Wellington, Halifax and Lancaster bombers. In 1943, Don was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal, which was presented to him by King George VI. On his return to Canada in 1944, Don married Irene Munro, his fiancée of 5 years, on October 9. He served an additional year with the Western Air Command in Winnipeg and was honourably discharged from active service in the fall of 1945, with the rank of Flight Lieutenant. Don rejoined the Reliance Elevator in Thunder Bay, working as a grain inspector and later joined the Government Grain Inspection staff, retiring from that work after 18 years of service. Don had a long association with the Pipes and Drums of Thunder Bay as a piper, Pipe Major and Instructor. After his retirement from active playing, Don was made Honourary Chieftain of the Band. In 1975, Don was honoured with a Citizen of the Year award by the City of Thunder Bay in recognition of 50 years of community involvement. Don composed hundreds of pipe tunes honouring family members and special occasions. He was also an accomplished violinist, playing on many special occasions throughout his life. As a teenager, he played violin with the Thunder Bay Philharmonic Society, under Gunton Smalley. Don was a Mason. He was an active and highly regarded member and officer in the following Lodges: Fort William Lodge 415, York Rite, Scottish Rite, Zohar Council, York Rite College, Holy Bay Conclave #19, and the Lakehead Shrine Club. He was an elder of First Presbyterian Church and a member of Branch 6 Royal Canadian Legion. Don will long be remembered by family and friends for his prolific vegetable garden, his ‘Highland Hospitality’, his gift as a water diviner, his generosity to neighbours with snow removal, his abilities as a weight lifter, his years of prospecting in Northern Ontario and his unsurpassed talents as a story teller. Don is survived by: Irene, his wife of 58 years; their children, Dr. John (Judy) of Langley, BC, Alec (Linda Bulmer) of Fredericton, NB, Donna (Aare Puhm) of Whitby, ON, Malcolm of Calgary, AB, and Mary (Mac Davies) and Hu (Mary Ann Unger) of Thunder Bay; his brother, Murray (Rose) of Thunder Bay; nineteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild and twelve nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by: his parents, John and Christina, from the Isle of Lewis, Scotland; his sister, Christina, in early childhood; his brother, Iain, in 1996; and his nephew, Thorcuill, in 2001. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 4, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church (corner of Grey & Walsh Streets), with the Reverend Mark McLennan officiating. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery, following the reception. There will be no visitation, in accordance with Don’s wishes. A separate Masonic memorial service will be held by the Fort William Lodge 415 on Thursday, October 3, 2002 at 7:30 p.m. in the Blake Funeral Chapel. If friends so desire, memorials may be made to St. Joseph’s Hospice Unit, First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund or The Pipes and Drums of Thunder Bay.
Nesbitt, David Edward (Jabber)

Mr. David Edward (Jabber) Nesbitt, age 66 years, a longtime resident of Schreiber passed away peacefully on October 1, 2002. Eddy was born
March 7, 1936 and worked at many different jobs and places tirelessly, most recently at G. Figliomeni and Sons. Eddy always had a wink and a smile for everyone that he met, usually on the way to and from his friend John's. Eddy is survived by his doting mother Margaret, sisters Lorraine (Leonard) and Muriel also his brother Russell (Liz) and sons Terry, Danny and Kenny and their families. His niece Tami (David) and nephews Cory and Jason (Erin). Eddy was predeceased by his father David and his brother Michael. At Eddy's request cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral service. Arrangements have been entrusted to King Funeral Home of Schreiber. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Northern Cancer Research Foundation or the McCausland Hospital Long Term Care Project would be appreciated.
Flucker, Marilyn June (Boots)

Peacefully, we lost Marilyn at S.M.M.H in Bracebridge, on September 28, 2002.
Beloved wife of David. Loving Mom to Leanne, Greg and son-in-law Michael. Daughter of Muriel and the late Stan Roots of King City.
Daughter-in-law of Elizabeth and Jim Flucker of Baysville. Sister of Peter (Chris) and Bob (Bev), sister-in-law of Joan (Doug), Doug (Bernadette) and Don (Patti). Proud Nanny to Emma and Elizabeth.
Marilyn will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Cremation has taken place and a private memorial service will be held at a later date.
DUCHARME
It is with great sadness that the family of Edward John Ducharme ("Fast Eddie"), age 65 years, a resident of Ontario Street announces his sudden passing. Eddie died early Monday morning, September 30th, at TBRH-McKellar site with his very special friend Penny and his family at his side.
Born in Port Arthur, September 3rd, 1937, son of Albert and Elma Ducharme, he attended Cornwall Public School, and Hillcrest High School. He was employed by Great Lakes, currently Bowater for 27 years taking early retirement in the spring of 1995.
Ed took great pleasure enjoying the summer at his trailer at Northern Lights Lake Resort. He had the camaraderie of friends from his working relationship at Bowater. Ed pretended to know the ways of wildlife and fishing ethics that he liked to share at campsite chats and ad-hoc discussions of his fishing and boating antics. Other great times were spent with life-long friends, Richard and Karen at their camp at Rudge Lake.
The Java Hut became a special place where he could consume gallons of coffee while chatting up the staff and visiting with friends he'd met during the coarse of his life. Ed was an avid CB'er in the hey-days where he got his handle "Fast Eddie". He was a member of the Lakehead Search and Rescue Squadron with whom he went on one or two search missions a year.
Eddie will be forever loved by his soul mate Penny, forever missed by life-long best friend Richard Kiiskila and wife Karen. Lovingly remembered by his brothers Ken (Jette) and Bob, nieces Jennifer and Adrienne, nephews Paul, Kent and Dale and Great Nephew Griffin Jenkins; dear cousins Shirley Herbst (Chicago) and Val Barton (St. Louis). His parents Elma and Albert Ducharme predeceased him.
Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held on Friday, October 4th at 2:00 PM in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 North Court Street, officiated by Rev. Canon John Jordan, Interment of the ashes in the family plot will follow at Riverside Cemetery. A gathering for family and friends to celebrate Eddie's life will be held after the services at 1447 Silver Harbour Drive. Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
Toivonen, Eino

Mr. Eino J. Toivonen age 99 years, died peacefully at Dawson Court on Tuesday, October 01, 2002 with family by his side. Eino was born
in Vuorijarven Kyla, Parkano, Finland, January 06, 1903 and came to Port Arthur in 1926. He married his beloved Aili Korhonen on August 22, 1930. In earlier years he was employed as a bushworker, then as a carpenter for 25 years prior to his retirement in 1978. Following this he was a crossing guard at Balsam Street School where he was loved by all the children. Eino was a long standing active member of Bethel Lutheran Church. His faith in Christ strengthened those around him. Our "Pappa" will be remembered for his generous love and devotion. He will be sadly missed by his family and all who were touched by him. Eino is survived by daughter Miriam, grandson Richard; granddaughter Pauline (Mike); great granddaughter Lisa (Eino), great- great grandson Mathew Eino; great grandson Bill (Diane), great-great granddaughter Mallory; great grandson John; numerous nephews and nieces in Canada and Finland. Eino was predeceased by his wife Aili and son William. Funeral services for the late Mr. Eino Toivonen will be held on Thursday, October 03, 2002 at 11:00 AM in Bethel Lutheran Church with Pastor Maunula officiating. Interment to follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time. Mrs. Paulina Darosa age 67 years of Regina Avenue passed away on Tuesday October 1, 2002. Born in Sao Miguel Azores, Portugal she came to Canada in 1965 and settled in Thunder Bay. Paulina enjoyed her family especially looking after her grandchildren and having her family over for Sunday dinners. Paulina was a member of St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church and the C.W.L. Paulina was survived by her children Louis (Nicole), Mario (Rose), Jimmy (Wendy) and Paul (Kim). Grandchildren Kimberly, Darian, Bailey, Victoria and Kaden. Brothers and sisters: Maria (Louis) Raposo of Kitchener, Fernanda(Gilberto) Sousa of Kitchener, Adelina (Ilidio) daSilva of Thunder Bay, Ernesto (Maria) Novo of Thunder Bay, Belmira (Jose) Pacheco of Portugal, Antonia (Antonio) Arrvda of Kitchener, Balbina Simoes of Fall River and Manuel (Maria) Novo of Portugal. Many nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. Paulina was predeceased by her husband Luis, and her parents Manuel and Maria Novo. Funeral services for the late Mrs. Paulina Darosa will be held on Friday October 4, 2002 leaving the EVEREST CHAPEL 299 Waverley Street at Algoma at 8:50 AM to St. Anthony's R. C. Church for The Funeral Mass at 9:30 AM. Interment to follow in St Andrews Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be on Thursday from 6:00 – 9:00 PM in the Everest Chapel with the Vigil Prayers at 7:00 PM. If friend so desire donations to the Northern Cancer Research Foundation or to Heart and Stroke Foundation would be greatly appreciated by the family.
Maling, James

Mr. James (Jim) Maling, age 82 years, passed away in hospital at Thunder Bay on Sunday, September 29, 2002.
Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Jim moved to Thunder Bay in 1990.
Jim is survived by three brothers: Andy of Windsor, Ontario, Gordon of Nova Scotia, and Ernest (Ellen) of Thunder Bay; nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was predeceased by his parents Henry and Ethel; sister Lillian Scably; twin brother and sister Hilda and Harry Maling.
In accordance with Jim’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and private interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery.
Mahan, Muriel

Mrs. Muriel Mahan, age 72 years a resident of Oliver Road, passed away peacefully in the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital, Port Arthur Site on Sunday, December 1st, 2002 with her daughters by her side. Muriel was born
in Port Arthur on December 15, 1929, the youngest daughter of nine children. Raised in Perce Quebec she moved back to Port Arthur with her husband Grant in February 1950. Her family, friends and home were main interests. Muriel will be fondly remembered for her fiesty spirit and her sense of humour. She will be especially remembered and respected for her strength and courage, particularly in the past several years when she was faced with family tragedy and personal health challenges. She is survived by her three daughters: Lorna Akervall, Beverly (Peter) Tomasevic and Heather (Cameron) Wyllie, grandchildren; Christopher (Patti Shubaly) Akervall, Kelli (Mark) Mlckovsky, Michael Mahan, and Vanessa Wyllie, brothers; Joseph (Ruth) Cahill of Thunder Bay, Lorne (Mona) Cahill, William Cahill, sisters; Lena (John-Arthur) Delhanty and Dora Blondin all of Quebec. Nieces, nephews and other family members also survive.
Muriel was predeceased by her parents Arthur and Eliza Cahill, husband Grant, brother Alton, sisters Vida and Freda, son-in-law Henry Akervall and cherished grandson Jordan Wyllie.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday December 5, 2002 at 12:10 pm when family and friends will gather in St. Agnes R.C. Church (1021 Brown Street) for funeral mass celebrated by Rev. Francis Pudicherry. Interment to follow in St. Andrew's Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held Wednesday December 4, 2002 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm in the Sargent & Son Funeral Home 21 N. Court Street where a Vigil Service will be held at 7:00 pm. Memorial donations to the Lung Association or charity of your choice would be appreciated.
Melnudris, Arthur

Mr. Arthur Melnudris, age 83 years, of 188 Market Street, passed away in St. Joseph’s Hospital on Saturday, November 30, 2002 following a brief illness.
Born in Kaceni, Latgali, Latvia, he came to Canada and Fort William in 1947. Art worked on Chapples Farm, then was employed by R.F. Welch Construction and latterly, by Lakehead Freightways, retiring in 1984. His garden and dogs were the center of interest during his retirement.
Art is survived by his step-daughters: Inga (Bill) Vantour, Ruth (George) Barrow, both of Thunder Bay; five grandchildren: Rick Vantour, Sandra Krupp, Janel (Andreas) Buchholz, Adriane (Bruce Forbes) Barrow, Leanne (Scott) Wilson; six great-grandchildren; his man’s best friend “Ginger”; sister-in-law Wilma Melnudris; nieces Gunta (Tom) Brace of St. Paul, MN and Ausma Durfey of Naples, FL. Also surviving are cousins in Latvia, U.S.A. and South America. He was predeceased by his wife Hilma in 1977; his parents; sister in Latvia and brother John in Minneapolis, MN.
Cremation has taken place and family and friends are asked to gather first at the main gate of Riverside Cemetery for a Graveside Service which will be held on Thursday, December 5th at 2:00 p.m. officiated by Rev. Matthew Diegel of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church. A Reception will follow at Branch #5 Royal Canadian Legion, 223 Van Norman Street. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made in Art’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the charity of your choice.
Gleeson, Zilpha Mildred "Zip"

After a long and happy life, Zip passed away peacefully in her sleep at Pioneer Ridge on November 28th, 2002. A very special day always in her life - American Thanksgiving - which she celebrated from a very early age as her parents Maude and Horace Robinson were born
in the U.S.A. Zip was born
on December 12th, 1910. She attended Fort William Collegiate then on to North Bay Normal Teachers College in 1928. She began teaching school at the age of 18 in the Hymer’s School and continued teaching until she retired at the age of 65. She was very active in First Church United - Teaching Sunday School, C.G.I.T. and the Couples Club. She was a founding member of the Happy Handicaps Club and was very active with the club for almost 50 years. Her family and friends played a big part of Zip’s life - she was always “doing” for everyone - including many strangers, who in turn became very cherished friends. She loved to travel but her most favourite place was Shebandowan. On July 9th, 1932 she married her childhood sweetheart, Lorne Gleeson, who predeceased her on March 25th, 1997. Zip will be lovingly remembered by sons: Rod and wife Marisa, Gary and wife Mila (Toronto), Dan and wife Ione; daughters: Fay and husband Rob Steadwell and Bryer and husband Sig Wanecki (Peace River), Jean (Jones) Arthurs; her grandchildren: Dan, Rob, Don and Kylis Gleeson, Ray Gillespie, Cindy Kennedy, Kelly Arnold, Lorne Gleeson, Carolyn Kellaway, Dana Mascarin, Lorna Lahde, Michael, Cameron and John Steadwell and Johanna Wanecki and 30 great grandchildren. Zip is survived by brother-in-law Ray Gleeson. Besides her husband, Lorne, she was predeceased by her parents Maude and Horace Robinson, sister Frances McCubbin and brother Dean Robinson, also grandsons Lee Wanecki and Derek Steadwell. A birthday celebration for Zip Gleeson will be held at the First Church United on Thursday, December 12th, 2002 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Covenant House, 70 Gerard St. East, Toronto, Ontario M5B 1G6, the First Church United Memorial Fund, or the Alzheimer Society or a charity of your choice.
DeLaronde, John Joseph L.

Mr. John Joseph L. DeLaronde age 82 years of Bethammi, formerly of Manion Street, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 30, 2002.
Born in Port Arthur in 1920, John moved to Nipigon shortly after with his family. John had served during the Second World War from 1939 to 1945 with the 7th Field Regiment 37th Field Battery in the Royal Canadian Artillery and after returning home moved to Terrace Bay and worked as a Woodroom Operator with Kimberly-Clark until his retirement in 1982. John, along with his wife Isabella had just celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in July. He was a member of both the Royal Canadian Legion, Port Arthur Branch #5 and St. Margaret Roman Catholic Church. John enjoyed hunting and fishing and in his younger days hockey and other sports.
John will be sadly missed by his loving wife Isabella, 1 sister Natalie Coates of Thunder Bay, 1 brother Bobby (Norma) of Paris, Ontario, numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
John was predeceased by his mother Daisy, father Joseph, stepfather Joe Suckett, brothers Anthony ("Tony"), Dale ("Si") and sisters Midline and Betty, one niece Joyce Kiiskila and one nephew Raymond DeLaronde.
Funeral services for the late Mr. John DeLaronde will be held on Thursday, December 5, 2002 with family and friends meeting at St. Margaret Roman Catholic Church for The Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in Cliffside Cemetery, Nipigon, Ont. Visitation for friends will be on Wednesday evening from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM with the Vigil Prayers at 7:00 PM in the EVEREST CHAPEL.
In lieu of flowers donations to the Alzheimer Society of the Royal Canadian Legion or the Port Arthur Branch #5 Building Fund would be greatly appreciated.
