Anderson, William

Mr. William James (Bill) Anderson, age 69 years, a resident of 303 Southgate Court, passed away unexpectedly in Dryden District Hospital on Friday, November 29, 2002.
He was born
and educated in Sudbury; and also attended Sioux Tech in Sault Ste. Marie. Bill started his mining career as a student, joing INCO in 1956 at the Copper Cliff Smelter. Later he transferred to the Levack Mine in the efficiency office. In 1958 he went to work at Panel Mine, Elliott Lake, as a shift boss. In 1960, Bill returned to INCO in Thompson MB, where he advanced to the level of General Foreman. He was transferred to Shebandowan in 1975 as Superintendent, and later became Manager. In 1986, his next transfer was to Garson and Little Stobie Mines in Sudbury. Bill retired from Inco in 1989; and he joined MacIsaac Mining and Tunneling Co. as Manager, until retirement.
Left to mourn is his wife Marie; three daughters: Sherry (Mike) Iwaszkiw of Winnipeg, MB; Cindy (Seppo) Lamppu and Cathy (Rob) Marchese; all of Thunder Bay; six grandchildren: Ryan, James, Chelsey, Darryll, Alex and Shane. Also surviving are three brothers; one sister; three aunts; and numerous cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Norm and Eva Anderson.
According to Bill’s wishes, cremation has taken place; and a Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, December 3rd at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, officiated by Canon John Jordan. Visitation for family and friends will commence one hour prior to the time of Service. Interment will take place at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, donations my be made in Bill’s memory to the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital.
William (Bill) Swan
Swan- Mr. William (Bill) Swan a resident of Dawson Road, passed away peacefully in St. Joseph's Care Group on November 30, 2002 at the age of 91 years. Born in Poland on September 20, 1911, he immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1925, settling in Kipling, Saskatchewan. Leaving home at an early age, Bill worked at various jobs during the depression until becoming grounds-keeper for many years at the home of the late D.A. Clark. In 1947, Bill met his wife Winnifred L. Adams and they were married in August of 1947. By this time Bill was into dabbling and experimenting with new flowers and shrubs and propagating some. In the spring of 1967, his dream came true when Winnifred, who was very instrumental in forming the business and Bill opened Swan's Acres Nurseries and Florists, which Bill operated until illness forced him to retire in 2001. Bill was a life member of the Thunder Bay Horticultural Society. He is survived by his daughter Carol Lynn (Bob Tuomi) in Mississauga, grandchildren Jordon and Maggi. He also leaves to mourn his brothers Steve, Thunder Bay, Philip, Toronto and George, Longlac, sisters Helen Baryla , Vernon, B.C. and Kathaleen, Thunder Bay as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his wife Winnifred in July of 1970, a son in infancy, father Peter in Kipling in October of 1946 and his mother Caroline in Thunder Bay in December of 1972. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 4th when family and friends will gather at St. Paul's United Church for services at 11:00 a.m. conducted by Kathy McMillan. A private interment will take place in the Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call at the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 North Court Street, Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Flowers gratefully declined as expressions of sympathy the family respectfully requests memorials to the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital Foundation or to a charity of one's choice.
DIDYK
With great sorrow, the family of Mrs. Sonia Didyk announces her sudden passing. Sonia, age 77, died on November 29, in Thunder Bay Regional Hospital-McKellar Site.
Born in the Ukrainian village of Tarnopol, she was taken from her family as a young teenager and forced to work in Germany during WWII. Little did she know, but she would never see them again. After a few years, she married Roman Kostrakewich and together they immigrated to Canada in 1949. In July of that year, their daughter Luba was born. Soon Roman’s health began to fail, so Sonia worked at various jobs until she found permanent employment at Canada Car (Bombardier). Sonia was very proud of the fact that even though she could barely speak English then, she progressed from office cleaning to electrical assembly in her 37 years at the plant.
At this time, she also managed to run a small farm, as well as take care of her family. Sonia’s second husband was Ivan Rosil, who unfortunately died soon after their marriage. She then married a wonderful man in 1972, Andrew Didyk.
"Baba" will always be remembered for her wonderful cooking, generous heart and avid gardening. Her love for animals was passionate, especially for her two dogs, Penka and Smarty. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
Sonia is survived by her husband Andrew, her daughter Luba Chyril and her son-in-law Steve Chyril and their children Michael and Sonia (en route). Also surviving are her stepchildren Lizanne (Betty) Bienvenue (Gary) and family, and Andy Didyk Jr. (Mary Kate) and family.
Funeral services for the late Mrs. Sonia Didyk will be held on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 at 10:00 A.M. in the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 W. Gore Street at James with Fr. Vasyl Maluzynsky officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, December 2, 2002 (tonight) from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. in the chapel. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Northern Cancer Research Foundation.
Englund, John Henry

Englund- Mr. John Henry Englund, age 73 years a resident of Thunder Bay, passed away in Westmount Hospital on Friday, November 29, 2002.
Born in Port Arthur, Ontario on December 12, 1928, he was the son of the late Godfrey and Elsa Englund. John worked as a sheet metal worker with local companies throughout the city. He especially enjoyed times spent in the out-of-doors fishing and hunting. He will be lovingly remembered by his sister Violet Bliss, his nieces and nephews and by his special dog- buddy Cole. Predeceased by his parents, brother Edward, sisters Signe Shepherd and Anita Maydanski and by brothers-in-law Bert Bliss, Jim Shepherd and Mike Maydanski. At John's request, cremation has taken place and a service will be held at a later date with inurnment at the Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Cade, Melburn (Mel)

Mr. Melburn (Mel) Cade, age 71 years a resident of Thunder Bay, passed away at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital (McKellar Site) on Friday, November 29th, 2002. Born December 29th, 1930 in St. James, Manitoba, he moved to the Lakehead in 1945. Mel was employed as a broker with Lakehead Freightways Limited until his retirement. Mel received the Million Mile Club Award with Mac Trucks in 1979. His home and family were the main focus of his life and he took great enjoyment in teaching his children and grandchildren to hunt and fish.
He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters Lee Frost (Don), Melva Cade, Tracy Robins (Alan) and son Victor (Norma), grandchildren Cindy, Joanne, Crystal, Sheldon, Carmela, and Donald Jr., great grandchildren and nieces and nephews also survive. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret in 2001, daughter Joanne, his parents as well as by his sister Pauline Mokoman. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, December 3rd at 11:00 a.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 North Court Street with Canon David Bradford of St. Michael & All Angels Anglican Church officiating. Inurnment will take place in the spring of 2003 at the Sunset Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers donations to the Canadian Institute For The Blind or to the Northern Cancer Research Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
Kroff, Howard

Mr. Howard Edwin Kroff, age 77 years, resident of Thunder Bay, died peacefully in his sleep on his birthday, Wednesday, October 02, 2002 in Thunder Bay Regional Hospital, Port Arthur site. Howard was born
in Winnipeg, Manitoba. While still a young boy, Howard moved with his family to Sioux Lookout, then Armstrong and finally settling in Fort William. Howard started work at Mahon’s as an apprentice electrician and worked there for 50 years, the last twenty-seven years as the Manager of the motor shop. He was a member of the I.B.E.W. Local #339. He was a Mason and member and past Master of the Connaught Lodge 511 A.F.&A.M., the Scottish Rite, Lakehead Shrine Club, Family Motor Coach Association and Thunder Bay Branch of SAMS Club. For many years Howard was a member of the East Loon Campers Association where the family enjoyed their camp for 38 years. Howard was always a family man and his family always came first. He and Kay enjoyed travelling, especially to visit their children and grandchildren, whom he was very proud of. Howard also enjoyed square dancing, here in Thunder Bay and also while they traveled. He is survived by his wife Katherine, children Lauretta Miller and husband Allan, St. Thomas, ON, Brian and wife Nancy, Kingston, ON, Kathy Fisher and husband Steve, Upland, California, 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Other relatives also survive. Howard was predeceased by his parents, Edwin and Lauretta. Funeral services will by held on Monday, October 7, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. in the Blake Funeral Chapel with Rev. Carl Triskle officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. Visitation with family will be on Sunday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 in the Blake Funeral Chapel. Memorials to the First Church United Memorial Fund or Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.

Cousins, Frederick

Fred Cousins, aged 73 years, much beloved husband of Vivian of Bissett, MB., and dear father of Connie (Patricia), David (Jeannette), Roger (Iréna) and Glenn (Monica); and grandfather of Scott, Jana, Richard, Colleen, Alexia, Zachary and Maxwell, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday October 2, 2002 at his residence. He is also survived by his sisters, Jo Humphrey of Thunder Bay, Ont., Emilie Martin of Merrickville, Ont., Jean Rawlings of Victoria, B.C., Marie Law of Waterloo, Ont., Carol Vinni of Thunder Bay, Ont., and his brother Earl Cousins of Quesnel, B.C., He was predeceased by his parents Mabel and Fred Cousins and his brother Gerry. Fred worked as a machinist and in mechanical maintenance in various mines across Canada. He was very community minded. He served as a councilor for the Town of Bissett, was on the Advisory Council to Pine Falls Paper and was involved with the Model Forest for many years. He was also a volunteer fireman in many of the communities in which he lived. Fred was an ardent fisherman and camper. He loved the land and the bounty of the land. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, October 6 at 2:00 p.m. in the Bissett Community Centre, Bissett, MB with Rev. Peter Cain officiating. In lieu of flowers, if family and friends so desire, donations in Fred's memory may be made to the Canadian Institute for the Blind, 1080 Portage Ave. Winnipeg, MB. R3G 9Z9
KRYS
Mrs Anna Krys, age 80 years, resident of Thunder Bay died in Thunder Bay Regional Hospital McKellar site, on Tuesday, October 1, 2002. Anna is survived by her sons Richard, Zbigniew “Paul” and Leslie and her daughter Elizabeth. Seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive. She was predeceased by her husband Pawel on April 9, 1998. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 4, 2002 when friends and family will gather for Funeral Mass at 1:00 p.m. in St. Casimir’s’ Church celebrated by Rev. George Zebrowski ofm. Interment will follow in St. Andrew’s Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be on Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Blake Funeral Chapel. If friends desire memorials to the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.

Gribben, Thomas

Mr. Thomas (Scotty) Gribben, age 82 years, resident of Thunder Bay, died at his residence on Wednesday October 2, 2002. Born in Paisley Scotland, he grew up there and served with the Seaforth Highlanders in World War II from 1939 until 1945. He married the former Helen Rankin in 1950 and together with their two sons, they emigrated to Canada settling in Fort William. He was employed at Husky Oil for ten years and then Canada Car until his retirement in 1984. He was a Warrant Officer in the Lake Superior Scottish Regiment for many years and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #6. After his retirement he served with the Commissionaires. Thomas was a champion dart player and in his later years bred and raised racing pigeons. Thomas was a die-hard Blue Jay and Maple Leaf fan, his main interest was his family and watching his grandson play hockey. Thomas is survived by his wife Helen; son Archie (Suzanne); grandchildren Jillian and Joshua; daughter Cathie (Jim); granddaughters McKenna and Katelyn all of Thunder Bay; brothers John, Alistair and sister Mary all of Paisley, Scotland. Thomas was predeceased by his parents John and Ann; sister Helen; brothers Peter Willie and James; son Johnny and granddaughter Sara. Cremation has taken place and Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Rev. Francis Pudicherry on Saturday October 5, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Agnes’ Church. Final interment will take place in Sunset Memorial Gardens at a later date. If friends desire, in lieu of flowers, memorials to the Northern Heart Research Foundation would be appreciated.

King, Allen

Mr. Allen Paul King age 78 years, passed away unexpectedly October 1, 2002 at Thunder Bay Regional Hospital. Allen was born
June 1, 1928 on Jackfish Island, Lake Nipigon. He was a life long resident of Gull Bay, ON, Allen was educated at St. Joseph's Boarding school, Fort William, Ontario. Following his education, he worked along side his father and brothers on the "Bobby Allen" as a commercial fisherman on Lake Nipigon. As a self-employed commercial fisherman, Allen fished numerous Lakes, but Lake Nipigon and Black Sturgeon Lake were his preference.
In his earlier years, Allen worked as a trapper, lumberjack, and prospector. He also delivered the mail by dog team from MacDiarmid to Gull Bay. He was also available day or night to provide medical transportation for the people of Gull Bay.
Allen loved animals and always had pets. He trained dog sled teams when it was the main mode of transportation. His home was the focal point for his family, friends and community. He loved children and believed in "more the merrier", thus he was often chosen to be a godparent to numerous children. Allen was a natural teacher who enjoyed sharing his wisdom and Ojibway language; he valued education as a means of becoming self-sufficient. Allen was admired for his strong work ethic and beliefs; he was an active member of the Sacred Heart Church. Allen was well known for his great sense of humour and will be remembered for it. He loved to travel and had a lust for life. During his past time, Allen would watch NHL hockey, attend to his boat and work on puzzle books.
Allen is predeceased by his wife Angela (Wilson), parents; Margaret and Michel, brothers; Jack and Sam, and son Roger Maxwell.
He is survived by his step-mother Susan, brothers; Stanley and Peter Sr. Allen is also survived by his son Wayne (Patsy), daughters; Margaret (Gordon), Juliette, Annie (Gordon), Audrey (David), Rita (Bob), Gail (Albert). Grandchildren; Richard, Angela, Matthew, Gary, Solstice, Lisa, Ryan, Amy, Harley, Tessa and great grandchildren Jayden and Tala and numerous nieces and nephews. Allen will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Funeral services for the late Allen King will be held on Friday, October 4th when family and friends will gather at St. Andrew's R.C. Church for Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. celebrated by Rev. Larry Kroker, S.J.
ANNIE HUNTER
Miss Annie Hunter, aged 98 years, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at Roseview Manor, Thunder Bay. Annie was born
in St. Andrew’s Scotland on December 19, 1903 and came to Canada in 1914 directly to Fort William. She was educated in local schools and began employment with the Great Lakes Paper Co., as a shipping clerk in 1923, later retiring in 1964 after over 40 years of service. Annie was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and the Church Choir for many years. She was a world traveler and was greatly loved by her family. She will be lovingly remembered by her sister Isabella Hunter of Thunder Bay, her nieces, nephews and other relatives. Annie was predeceased by her parents David and Mary Hunter and her brothers John and David. Funeral Services for Miss Hunter will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, October 9, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. Interment in Mountain View Cemetery to follow. Visitation with the family will be held on Tuesday evening from 7 - 9 p.m. at Jenkens Funeral Home, 226 S. Syndicate Avenue.
Lahti, Laila M.

Mrs. Laila M. Lahti age 77 years passed away in St. Joseph’s Hospital on Tuesday, October 1, 2002 with her children by her side. Born in Port Arthur, she had lived here most of her life. She was a longtime employee of Headway Builders and after retirement enjoyed camping at Mirror Lake and later weekly cribbage get–togethers with her close friends. She was predeceased by her husband Arthur W. Lahti in 1983.
Laila is survived by her daughter Nancy, Mrs. David Jokinen of Thunder Bay, son David and daughter-in-law Nan also of Thunder Bay, daughter Gayle, Mrs. Derek Tedder of Victoria, B.C., grandchildren Janis and Laura Jokinen, Arlene, John and Leia Lahti, Justene and Morgan Tedder, great grandchild Zoe Lahti, as well as other relatives and close friends.
Funeral services for the late Mrs. Laila M. Lahti will be held on Friday, October 4, 2002 at 1:30 PM in Faith Chapel, 193 Bruce Street with Pastor Gene Howard officiating. Private interment of cremated remains will take place at a later date in Riverside Cemetery.
