ANNE FYDIRCHUK On Tuesday, November 23, 2004 at the Health Sciences Centre, Anne Fydirchuk passed away at the age of 76 years. Anne was predeceased by her father Sam. She leaves to cherish her memory her mother Pauline, brother Maurice and wife Margaret, numerous nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. Cremated remains will be forwarded to Jenkins Funeral Home in Thunder Bay, ON, for a memorial service to be held at a later date. PEARL HAZEL GAIR (nee CHRISTIE) October 30, 1920 - November 24, 2004 passed away after a lengthy illness at Grace Hospital with her loving family at her side. Pearl was married 60 years to the late Patrick Gair (1999) and was predeceased by her daughter Patricia, son Bradford and her brother Jesse. She leaves to mourn her passing with such great sorrow her sister Myrtle Doreen and brother-in-law Boyd Herity, her son Bob and wife Dorothy, son Johnny and wife Brenda, son David and wife France from Ottawa, sons, Alex, Billy, Cameron and Gregg and daughter Pamela and husband Fred English from Vancouver, daughter Cathie and husband Laurie Fischer, nephews, Doug and Ross Herity, 15 grandchildren
, two great-grandchildren and many relatives and friends. We will all miss you Pearl with your loving and giving ways and willingness to help everyone. Born in Winnipeg, graduated from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate, married in 1939, worked for many years at Sharon Nursing Home, Upjohn Services and Amway. LOUIS J. GAREAU 1930 - 2004 Louis est decede paisiblement a l'hopital Seven Oaks le 24 novembre, a l'age de 74 ans apres une longue bataille avec LEWY BODY DEMENTIA. Louis est ne a Winnipeg le 4 septembre 1930. If a fait ses etudes a l'ecole Sacre-Coeur de Winnipeg, au College St-Paul et l'Universite du Manitoba. Louis a rencontre Denise (sa cherie) durant l'ete de 1955. Ce fut le coup de foudre et se sont maries le 14 janvier 1956. Il laisse dans le deuil sa cherie Denise, son fils Gilles, ses 2 petits fils Noel et Tristan et (Chaser) la chatte a Noel et Tristan qui etait devenue la compagne a Louis sa derniere annee a la maison. Il laisse aussi dans le deuil sa soeur Constance (Laurent) et sa soeur Flora et ses 3 freres Treffle (Irene), Leopold (Donna) et Denis (Susan) et son beau-frere Leo (Diane) de Montreal. Il laisse aussi plusieurs neveux et nieces qui appreciaient le sens d'humour de mom oncle Louis, specialement son filleul Marc de Montreal qui aimait beaucoup savourer la biere et le vin de son mon oncle Louis. Louis a consacre sa vie a chanter commencant au Sacre-Coeur, pour continuer a Elliot Lake, Ont. Apres notre demenagement a St. Boniface en 1969, Louis s'est joint a la chorale du Precieux-Sang, et en 1972 il s'est joint a la Chorale des Intrepides. Quand on s'est retires a St-Malo, il a chante dans la chorale de St-Malo. Louis chantait avec tout son coeur et toute son ame. Louis adorait ses petits-fils et Pepere jouait et inventait des jeux pour eux. Avant le coucher, Pepere chantait pour eux plusieurs chansons et specialement (ferme tes jolis yeux). Un gros merci au personnel exceptionnel de Seven Oaks pour les bons soins pendant un long sejour. Les funerailles auront lieu a l'eglise Precieux-Sang, rue Kenny le lundi 29 novembre a 14h. Au lieu des fleurs, vous pouvez faire un don a l'Association Alzheimer. Louis died peacefully at Seven Oaks Hospital on November 24th at the age of 74 after a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia. Louis was born
in Winnipeg on September 4, 1930. He studied at Ecole Sacre-Coeur in Winnipeg, St. Paul's College and University of Manitoba. Louis met Denise during the summer of 1955. They married January 14, 1956. He leaves to mourn his death his wife (sa cherie) Denise; his son Gilles; his two grandsons, Noel and Tristan and (Chaser) the grandsons' cat who had become Louis' companion in his last year at home. He also leaves his sister Constance (Laurent); his sister Flora and his three brothers, Treffle (Irene), Leopold (Donna) and Denis (Susan) and his brother-in-law Leo (Diane) from Montreal. He also leaves many nieces and nephews who appreciated their uncle Louis' sense of humour, especially his godchild Marc from Montreal who would always enjoy uncle Louis' homemade beer and wine. Louis dedicated his life to singing and joined a choir wherever we moved to. Louis sang with his heart and soul. Louis cherished his two grandsons and Pepere played and invented games for them. He would also sing to them before bedtime. A big thankyou to the exceptional personnel at Seven Oaks who gave him such loving care during his long stay at the hospital. The funeral will be held at eglise Precieux-Sang, 200 Kenny St. in St. Boniface on Monday, November 29 at 2:00 p.m. The service will terminate at the church. HELEN GEORGINA GARNEYS (nee RILEY) After a battle with Leukemia Georgina passed away November 24, 2004 at Riverview Health Centre. She accepted her fate with grace and dignity. Georgina leaves her two sons, Russell (Susan) of Kenora, Ontario and Dr. Glenn (Pearl) of Peterborough, Ontario; and her precious grandchildren, Jeff of Winnipeg, Scott of Ottawa and Ellen and Riley of Peterborough, Ontario. She also leaves her siblings, Ruth Rusk, John Riley (Monica), Joan Wilson (Don); and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband and best friend Ernie on March 2, 2004, sister Beth in 2001 as well as her mother and father. Georgina was born
February 15, 1925 on a farm in Mair, Saskatchewan and spent her childhood years enjoying country life with her siblings during the Great Depression. After high school she went on to Normal School and taught in a one-room school before moving to Winnipeg. Ernie and Georgie were married October 10, 1952 and in July 1956 were blessed with the birth of Russell followed by Glenn in 1958. Georgie became a full time mother and homemaker. She returned to accounting work after the children were in school and worked for Carelton Hatchery for the next 23 years. Our mother and father bought a cottage at Trout Lake, Ontario and became very special friends of Ken and Marg Page. Together they enjoyed fishing trips, exploring, berry picking, golf, card games and socializing with such wonderful friends. Thank you Ken and Marg for such great memories. Retirement years were spent at Trout Lake, Ontario with family and friends and many winters in Lake Havasu, Arizona. Special thanks go to Dr. Hayward, Dr. Jeyakumar and Dr. Garcia, the oncology staff at Victoria Hospital, her palliative care workers and the caring staff at 3E River Health Centre. A memorial service celebrating Georgina's life will be held on Saturday, December 18, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. in Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. followed by a reception. CORNELIA "CORRIE" GILLIS (nee GRIFT) Peacefully with family by her side, Cornelia "Corrie" Gillis (nee Grift), passed away at the Baldur Personal Care Home on Saturday, November 20, 2004, at the age of 92 years. Cornelia was predeceased by her husband John in 1983; sisters, Mary Claeys and Katherine Verniest and by a brother Jack Grift; also by brothers-in-law, Gerard Claeys, Henri Verniest, Fred DeBacker, Tony Gillis, Alphonse Gillis and sisters-in-law, Madeleine Gillis, Martha Gillis and Georgina Gillis. Cornelia was the oldest daughter of Evert and Johanna Grift. She was born
on January 15, 1912 at Bruxelles, MB. Cornelia married John Gillis on November 21, 1940. They settled on the farm at Altamont, MB where they started their family. In 1946, they moved to a farm south of Baldur, MB, where they continued to raise their family. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. In later years, they retired to the town of Baldur, MB. Cornelia became a resident of the Baldur Personal Care Home in January of 1993. The family wish to express their sincere appreciation and thanks to all the staff at the Baldur Personal Care Home and at the Baldur Hospital for all the excellent care and kindness shown to our mother over the years. May God bless you all! Prayers were held on Wednesday evening, November 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Willmor Chapel, 415 Broadway St., Glenboro, MB. Mass of the Christian Burial took place on Thursday, November 25 at 2:00 p.m. in the St. James Catholic Church, Baldur, MB with Father E. Samson as celebrant. THEODORE GOLDBERG
THEODORE (TEDDY) GOLDBERG It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Theodore Goldberg on Sunday, November 21, 2004 at 96 years of age. He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by Clara, his wife of 64 years; son Jerry (Shelley); grandson Darren; nephew Norman and niece Trudy and their families. He was predeceased by his parents and several siblings who perished in the Holocaust, and by his brother Aaron and sister-in-law Clara of Winnipeg. Teddy was born
in Pinsk, Russia and moved to Canada in 1930. He established himself in Winnipeg's thriving garment industry, where he quickly rose to assume supervisory and management positions. In July 1940 he married Clara and in 1952 they were blessed with their son Jerry. Teddy was a devoted husband, father and zaida who gave his love and support unconditionally. Teddy's Talmudic education gave him an appreciation for and love of both Chasidic and operatic music. One of the highlights of his life was his trip to Israel. He maintained a keen interest in Israeli politics until the end of his life. A skilled craftsman, Teddy could make just about anything. A bolt of canvas became a tent for his son. Discarded leather became a gym bag or a calculator case. His children's house is adorned with furniture made with his own hands, to be cherished as family heirlooms. Together, Ted and Clara spent many winters travelling south to Hawaii, Florida, California and Arizona. The family thanks Dr. C. Ogarenko and the Unit 5 staff at the Victoria General Hospital for the compassionate care shown Ted during his final days. A graveside service was held on Tuesday, November 23, at the Shaarey Zedek Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Ernie Chisick, Auby Gertenstein, Sheldon Muttner, Ivor Berman, David Levene and Adam Levene.
DAVID GRIERSON
DAVID ALAN GRIERSON Loving son, brother, husband, father, partner and uncle. We mourn the sudden death of David on November 20, 2004, three months short of his 50th birthday, February 19, 2005. David Grierson, Broadcaster with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, summed our remembrances for us in a recent print interview; "They can say that David Grierson loved his real family and his radio family. He was a blessed but sleep deprived man and now, at last, he is sleeping in." David suffered a massive heart attack on assignment in Tofino. Honouring his memory are his parents, Marjorie and Charles Grierson; sister Maureen (Richard) Jones; brother Peter (Julie); sons, Patrick and Graeme, their mother Sheri Grierson; and cherished love Kathryn Mulders. Fondly remembered by aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins. A private family gathering has been held and a public recognition is planed by the C.B.C. MAX GUSLITS
MAX GUSLITS On Monday, November 22, 2004, we all lost a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend - Max (Gussie) Guslits. The previous night he had talked to his kids and complained that the Bombers should have been in the Grey Cup that day. The next morning after a few words with Shirley, his wife of 63 years, Max went back to bed and slipped away quietly, with no fuss and no muss - it was just like him. He had, a month earlier, on October 22 celebrated his 89th birthday with his whole family who were in town for the event. The family ate, joked, reminisced, played scrabble, watched TV and Max occasionally slipped away for a few puffs on one of his favourite cigars. He loved his family and friends and they loved him. He still drove his immaculately kept Cadillac up till the last day. He was a man of humour, commitment, strength, stoicism and tenderness when it was called for. His loves ranged from golf to bridge, and from shopping to opera. Max was born
in 1915 in Winnipeg of Russian immigrant parents, Ben and Bella. He grew up with a sister, Lillian and a brother Izzy who both predeceased him, and leaves behind a brother Syd. The family owned a small general store in Elmwood for many years where Max grew up and attended St. John's Tech. After serving in the Air Force radio technician's unit during the Second World War, he returned to Winnipeg and soon joined his father-in-law, George Shapera, in the wholesale luggage business. The two of them made U.N. Luggage on Albert Street into one of the largest and busiest wholesale luggage operations in Western Canada. After George's death, Max went on to own and operate the business himself until his retirement in 1990. After that Max devoted his time to enjoying life with his wife and family. He and Shirley travelled to Hawaii every winter where they became part of a large, loyal, connected group of Canadians and Americans enjoying the warm breezes and white sand beaches. His children and granddaughter visited there often. They had a ball together. This past year saw Max slowing with age. He didn't like to be any less than at his best and seemed to decide that it was time to go. For all of us who thought Max would live for ever it came as an enormous shock. But he wouldn't have wanted to go any other way. At the end he was as strong and stubborn as ever. The end was made easier for his wife and family by the kind and gentle ministrations of Major Gordon Jarvis of the Grace General Hospital, and by Rabbi Pinsker of the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue in whose cemetery Max now rests. He leaves behind a family who loved him enormously. His beloved wife Shirley; his children Mark and Barbara, their partners Carolyn and Ken; and his most loved granddaughter Danielle. He will be missed.
JACK GUTKIN
JACK (ISADORE) GUTKIN May 29, 1919 - November 11, 2004 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Jack was predeceased by his parents, Max and Celia. Jack is survived by Ruth, his devoted wife of 61 years, his children, Terry Gutkin (Carole) and Donald Gutkin (Belva); his brother Danny Gutkin (Dorothy); his sister Shirley Hendin (Sid); his grandchildren, Hedy Gutkin, Shaun Gutkin (fiancee Kathy), Beth Gutkin and Meghan Gutkin; his great granddaughter Angelica as well as his family and many close friends. The primary focus of Jack's life was his wife and family who meant everything to him. Before commencing a very successful career in business, Jack served his country during the Second World War as a member of the Canadian Air Force in London England. When the war ended, Jack initially took up a career with Silpit Industries in the garment industry. When the opportunity presented itself, he became the general manager of Brown & Rutherford Lumber Company, a position, which he held for 25 years until his retirement at age 68. The successes enjoyed by this company over the years were highly influenced by Jack's efforts and talent. Jack's knowledge of the lumber business, his integrity, humanity and his overriding quality as a gentleman were attributes highly valued by his many customers, many of whom counted him as a close friend. These qualities have had an impact on every person who was fortunate enough to have known Jack. Jack always found time to give back to his community. He served as the president of the B'nai Brith Central Lodge and was actively involved in his younger years both with Hillel and The B'nai Brith Youth Organization. During his retirement years, he loved to spend his winters down south in Phoenix and Palm Springs. Spending time with his many friends and family was more important than anything else to Jack. Jack's passing leaves a deep void in the hearts of all who loved him. He will live forever in the memory of all who were fortunate enough to have known him. He will be greatly missed by his wife Ruth who was not only his partner but also his great love. Jack's family wish to thank the caring doctors and nurses of The Grace Hospital and especially, the Home-Care nurses that attended to him before he was hospitalized. Their wonderful and compassionate care was greatly appreciated. Funeral services were held at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue on November 14 with interment at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery. Pallbearers were Shaun Gutkin, Dr. Calvin Gutkin, Marvin Hendin, Sam Steindel, Art Frankel and Martin Strauss. Honorary pallbearers were Jack Dudeck and Oscar Antel. ROBERT HARLAND
ROBERT THOMPSON HARLAND Peacefully, at home, on Thursday, November 25, 2004, Robert Thompson Harland passed away at the age of 87 years. He was predeceased by his wife Mary; son Tommy; and daughter Heather; and is survived by his sister Joan Harland; sister-in-law Barb Chernick; daughter Diana Chance, son-in-law Gordon and their family Jennifer, Jeremey and Liam, and Jeremy and Jodie; and his daughter Katherine Kennedy and her family Arthur, Robert and Cecily. After graduating with a gold medal from the University of Manitoba in 1928, he completed a further degree in science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From 1942 to 1945 he served with the RCAF as a member of the joint allied Radar Research team in Washington, DC. He worked in various positions in the City Hydro, attaining the position of General Manager in 1969. He served as President of the Association of Professional Engineers of Manitoba, on the Board of Directors of the Manitoba Electrical Association and on the executive of the Civics Bureau of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce. The family would like to thank the Palliative Care Health Services for allowing Dad the dignity of remaining at home to fulfil his final wishes. No formal service will be held.
