SARAH DURWARD (nee BOTHAM) August 9, 1916 - November 20, 2004 It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, sister and grandmother Sarah at the Luther Home in West Kildonan. Sarah was predeceased by her husband William (1971); parents Charles and Annie Botham; brother Charlie and grandson
Blair. Surviving mom are her children Ann, Betty, Bill (Catherine); sister Mae Nicolson of Winnipeg, grandchildren, great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews. "Sadie" will be lovingly remembered by her cousin Nora Gould and the Botham families in Ashbourne, England. Mom was born
and resided in West Kildonan, attending Centennial School as a young girl. Mom was a self-taught woman with many interests in her younger years. She belonged to the West Kildonan Legion, Ladies Auxiliary, Women's Skating Club, was an avid bowler and loved to play Bingo and cards. She had an intelligent wit, a deep love for all animals and birds and could nuture a single leaf into a flowering shrub. Her family and friends will miss her wonderful cooking and the beautiful hand knit gifts for which she won numerous first prize ribbons that we were all so proud of. Sarah was a strong willed and confident woman until her late fifties when she lost all of her hearing and began her struggle with diabetes. which eventually confined her to a wheel chair. At Sarah's request, cremation has taken place and no service will be held. A private family gathering will take place at a later date. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the nurses on the 5th Floor, of the Seven Oaks Hospital and the staff at Luther Home for the care and respect bestowed upon our mother at all times. ROBERT NELS ELLISON It is with incredible sadness that we announce the passing of our father Bob Ellison on November 20, 2004. Dad suffered in the recent months with chronic lung disease, we are comforted in knowing that he is now with our mother, Audrey, whom he has missed beyond words since she left us on August 29, 1999. Although a life long resident of Teulon, MB, most recently due to ill health, he had been living with his children in Winnipeg. Dad was born
to Roy and Anne Ellison (Patterson) on February 17, 1934. Dad took great pride in being the eldest son and older brother to Merlin who predeceased him in September 2003. Dad, Papa, Grandpa, Homer - he was many things to us, most importantly he was our mentor, our strength and the man we always knew would be there for us. He was an incredible hockey player and coach, a wonderful son, a devoted husband, a loyal friend, and a solid member of the community in many roles including business man, town councillor, member of the Teulon Hockey Association, and committed father to children in community sports. He was a business partner to his father, his wife and his son and the life partner to our mother. We wish to celebrate his life - a life that was filled with the passion for family, sport, play time, travel and hard work. Mom and Dad took great pride in their children and grandchildren. Dad leaves to mourn in passing his three children, Neil and his child-ren, Lauren and Evan, and their mother Karen (Morin); Gary and Tanya (Tetgrade), their son Andre and Gary's daughter Shereka; Lori and Gerry (Berard), their children, Bobbi, Kristin and Jason, Dad also leaves three sisters-in-law, Alice Ellison, her children, Blair and Maureen and their families; Lorraine and Richard Lewko; Linda and Kris Jagassar and children, Terry, Shauna and Gregory; and his brother-in-law Ray Olekson, Shirley and their children, Candace, Amanda and Andrew. Uncle Bob held a special place in the hearts of all the nieces and nephews - not to mention the McDermid Kids. Earlier this year in March - dad lost his best friend - his dog Buttons. He had suffered many losses in the past five years - but we believe he died of a broken heart and is now at peace with our mother. While beautiful for the family, flowers are gratefully declined. Please honour our dad with donations to either Children's Wish Foundation or Ronald McDonald House. Memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 25, at 1:00 p.m. at the Teulon Rockwood Centennial Centre, (at the corner of Beach Road/Hwy. 17 and Main Street, Teulon) with lunch to follow. DOROTHY (DOTTI) FRANKLIN (nee OLIVER) Peacefully, on Saturday, November 20, 2004, Dorothy, beloved mother of Gayle and Lynn passed away at Vista Park Lodge at age 87 years. Mom was born
February 6, 1917 to Mr. and Mrs. T.K. Oliver. She is survived by daughters, Gayle Lester (Ollie) and Lynn Paton (Vern); grandchildren, Pat Doyle, Kathy Lester and Sheree Cektovski (Norm); great-grandchildren, Mark, Jenna and Matthew; brother George Oliver (Mary); special niece Joy Cumbers (Al); sisters-in-law, Joyce MacPherson and Bev Tinney; as well as by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Mom was predeceased by her husband Lloyd; brothers, Tommy, Jack and Bob; sisters, Tillie Christie, Jen Evans and Margaret Smith; and friend Jack Marshall. Dorothy was a faithful employee for the D.V.A. for 25 years. CORNELIA "CORRIE" GILLIS (nee GRIFT) passed away at the Baldur Personal Care Home on Saturday, November 20, 2004 at the age of 92 years, Cornelia "Corrie" Gillis (nee Grift) of Baldur, MB. Corrie leaves to mourn her passing her loving family, daughters, Joan (Odoric) Beaulieu of Grande Prairie, AB, Mary (Emile) Decosse of Grandview, MB; sons, Harold (Georgette) of Nanaimo, BC, Raymond (Noreen) of Baldur, Leonard (Cecile) of Baldur; 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. MARTHA GOOSSEN 1923 - 2004 Martha Toews Goossen peacefully left this world at Maplewood Manor, Steinbach, MB on November 20, 2004 at the age of 81. She is survived by her husband Abe, two daughters, three sons, six sisters, two brothers, seven brothers-in-law, two sisters-in-law, 20 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was predeceased by two grandchildren, two sisters, nine brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law. JAMES ALAN HAMILTON It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of James Alan Hamilton on November 19, 2004 at the age of 77 years with his family by his side. Alan's family was blessed to have cared for him in the comfort of his own home during the remaining months of his life. Alan was born
on October 1, 1927 in Winnipeg where he resided his entire life. He married the love of his life, Marjorie, in 1952 and was blessed to celebrate 50 wonderful years of marriage prior to her predeceasing him December 2002. He was a very proud member of Knox United Church for over 70 years where he served in many capacities including President and Superintendent of the Sunday School, Clerk of Session, Chairman of the Office Boards Planning Commission and was appointed to the Board of Trustees. He was also Chair of the Core Area Liaison Committee which lead to the formation of the Knox International Corporation and ultimately the construction of the Knox Centre. Alan was employed in the industrial cleaning supply business for over 50 years where he held marketing and senior management positions. He was deeply devoted and loyal to his family and friends and always took an active interest in helping others in the community. He played a very active role in coaching his children's football, hockey, soccer and baseball teams at both River Heights and Crescentwood Community Centres and was a past-member of the Granite Curling Club, the Winnipeg Winter Club and an avid Blue Bomber fan. Left to honour his memory is his daughter Tannis Tapley (Mark); his son Jeff (Angela) and grandchildren, Holly and Jason, as well as many nieces, nephews and close friends. Alan was also predeceased by his parents James and Ethel Hamilton and brother Hugh. Alan had a remarkable zest for life and a wonderful sense of humour that touched everyone around him. He always lived by the motto "Live, Love, Laugh". A service of celebration of life in memory of Alan will be held on Thursday, November 25 at 11:00 a.m. at Knox United Church, 400 Edmonton Street. DR. ROBERT A. HEDLIN Robert Hedlin, the second child of Frans and Margery Hedlin, was born
on January 5, 1921, at Saskatoon, SK. On Saturday, November 20, 2004, at the Riverview Health Centre at the age of 83 years, Robert was called home to be with the Lord. Bob had a good life: as a young man growing up on the farm near Watrous, SK, as a university student, as a professor of Soil Science at the University of Manitoba, and in his retirement in 1986. Jesus Christ became his personal Friend and Saviour when, as a young teenager, Bob took confirmation classes from Rev. J. T. Dahle, a godly Lutheran pastor, who was pastoring several churches in the district. For three years Bob worked full time with his father on the farm. Starting in 1941 the next phase of Bob's life was occupied with university studies in Saskatoon (B.S.A.), Edmonton (M.Sc.), and Madison, WI (Ph.D.). After completing his studies in February 1950, he moved to Winnipeg to take up an assistant professorship in Soil Science at the University of Manitoba. While in Madison, Bob met Alice Pearson, a nurse from Moline, IL. They were married in Winnipeg on June 17, 1950. The Lord blessed this union with three children. On May 19, 1974, at the age of 50, Alice passed away suddenly from a heart-related ailment. On October 11, 1975 Bob married Irene Artes. They met when they were both attending a faculty Bible study at the University of Manitoba. Bob's career in agriculture was spent at the University of Manitoba in the Department of Soil Science. He was head for 27 years. Bob was the first agriculturist to recognize that fallowing land was not essential in cropping systems in Manitoba. He introduced the concept of continuous cropping, which was the foundation for a doubling in agricultural production in the period between 1970 and 1980. Bob initiated and fostered research in soil testing. The tests developed under his leadership are widely used for agronomic recommendations as well as for environmental assessments and monitoring. Bob supported teaching and research in soil science locally and internationally, with departmental staff being part of teaching and research programs in developing countries. In August 2004, Bob was diagnosed with a blood disorder. During his illness his loving wife Irene was his most faithful nurse. On November 20, in the presence of Irene and several family members, he went home to be with the Lord. Besides his wife Irene, Bob leaves three children who will miss him greatly, son Karl and daughter-in law Devrah of Thorsby, AB, son Hugh and daughter-in law Jody of Winnipeg, MB, and daughter Nancy Waldie and son-in-law David of Winnipeg; his three grandchildren, Jonathan and wife Jen, Andrew, and Laura; brothers, Alan, Hugh, Charles and Ed; and sister Anne. Bob's funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 24 at 10:00 a.m., in the Bethesda Church, 1350 Grant Ave., with Pastor Bill Ehlers officiating. HARVEY WILLIAM HENDERSON 1936 - 2004 Peacefully on Friday, November 19, 2004, Harvey William Henderson passed away at Riverview Health Centre. Harvey is survived by his daughter Marion Henderson-Lane (Keith) of Nova Scotia; and his son Gregory Henderson (Tina) of Mississauga; his three grandsons, Brett and Ryan Lane and Aaron Henderson. Also his sisters, Doreen Forbes and Marion Fox and many nieces and nephews and their families. He was predeceased by his older brother James Henderson in 1993. Harvey was born
July 29, 1936 in Winnipeg to Beatrice and Walter Henderson. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy as an ERA. He left the Navy in 1965 working as Chief Maintenance Engineer for Calverts in Gimli and later the Municipal Hospitals in Winnipeg, retiring in 1994. Harvey resided at Jocelyn House for the past few months and the family would like to thank the staff for the care and comfort given him. Cremation has taken place and at his request his cremated remains will be sent to his children in Nova Scotia to be cast to the sea. JOHN FRANK HERTZ 1931 - 2004 With heavy hearts we announce the untimely passing of our incredibly special, loving and caring Husband, Dad and Poppa. On November 20, 2004 Dad passed away with his loving family by his side. He leaves behind the love of his life, his eternal soulmate, Phyllis, with whom he celebrated 50 wonderful years of marriage on July 3, 2004. Dad also leaves to mourn his loving children, Diane Nimik, Charlene Hertz (Jake Tremblay), Marianne (Jim) Petaski, John (Debby) Hertz. His grandchildren who were his pride and joy, Kyle, Cory, Deanna, Jadine and Blake. John was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Apolonia; his sister Josephine; his stepsisters, Mary and Julia and his stepbrothers, Frank, Rudolph and Walter. He will remain close to the hearts of all his family and friends. Dad was born
in a community outside of Barrie, ON. The family moved to Renwer, MB and then to East Selkirk. Mom and Dad married in 1954 and made their home in Selkirk. Dad was a longstanding and dedicated employee of the Manitoba Rolling Mills where he became an electrical supervisor and retired after 43 years of service. His loving, caring and gentle demeanor towards others was extraordinary. He loved being with his family and friends. He enjoyed travelling, camping, curling, reading and helping others. His love for life was contagious. He will always be lovingly remembered and sadly missed. GLORIA JANSEN On Friday, November 19, 2004 with dignity and grace, Gloria June Jansen aged 60, departed this earth to become one of God's special angels. Left to mourn her passing are Gloria's husband and soul mate Jack; son Duane; daughter-in-law Karin; grandchildren, Kurtis, Derek and Amy; mother Mary Korol; sisters, Shirley (Len) and Darlene; sister-in-law Susan; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. Gloria was predeceased by her brother George and father Marion. Gloria was a wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend but most of all she was an inspiration. Gloria never focused on her health problems despite living with diabetes. for 57 years, followed by a bout with cancer. Instead, her concern was always for others, which has left an imprint on all our hearts. Special thanks to Dr. Cramer and the incredible nurses and doctors at Grace Hospital ICU who tried so valiantly to save Gloria. MURIEL KIRKLAND (nee CARPENTER) 1932 - 2004 Peacefully on November 20, 2004 at the Grace Hospital, Muriel passed away at the age of 72 years. Muriel had a zest for life and brought smiles to the faces of everyone who knew her. She worked for many years at Avenue Pharmacy at Portage and Valour Road. She was known to all the neighborhood people as Mrs "C". Her infectious laughter and sense of humour touched everyone. Some of her favourite pastimes were playing cards and games with family and friends. She loved to play bingo, of which she was very lucky at. Later she took up darts and won the championship. Muriel enjoyed many summers at Miami Beach Campground with family and friends. She is loved and will be greatly missed.
