HARRY KUDLAK

HARRY KUDLAK July 30, 1910 - October 29, 2004 Peacefully on Friday, October 29, 2004, Harry aged 94 years, passed away at the Holy Family Nursing Home. Dad was predeceased in February 2002, by his wife of over 60 years Evelyn Olga, who would have been 88 on October 28. I'm sure Mom forgave Dad for being a day late to help her celebrate her birthday. He was also predeceased by his parents, two brothers and a sister. Dad leaves behind his daughter Judy Porter of White Rock, BC and his grandson Christopher Porter of Vancouver, BC. In Winnipeg he was fortunate to have a very caring family. His first cousin Joan (Lawrence) Fedowich was of great assistance to Mom and Dad as they aged, as was his nephews, Norman Kudlak and his family. Nephews, Gregory and Gordon Kudlak and his niece Joanne (Pierre) Daoust and their families also remembered their Uncle Harry and made him feel special. Dad throughout his life had many special friends, but none as special as the Frunchak family Nick and Anne and their daughter Linda (Russell) Smyrichinsky who have been family friends since Linda and Judy were babies. Lisa Smyrichinsky became an "adopted" grandchild to Mom and Dad. Thank you, dear friends. Harry's greatest joys in life were his wife Olga, daughter Judy, grandson Christopher and his church, St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church. He was very proud of the fact that he was one of the oldest surviving members of his church, as well as the oldest living Kudlak of all time. Harry spent most of his life living in north Winnipeg and working for CP Rail and then CN Rail after the war. He retired from CN Rail at the age of 65 years, after 30 years of service. He loved trains, especially the old steam engines and passed along his love of trains to anyone who would listen. Harry, Olga and Judy always travelled across Canada and the United States by train. But although Olga and Judy enjoyed the travelling, Harry would always look forward to returning to his garden and his home of 59 years in north Winnipeg. When he wasn't working or gardening, he collected rare coins, stamps and watched all sports. The family wishes to thank all the staff on the 3rd floor at the Holy Family Nursing Home, in particular nurses, Diane, Kathy, Tina, Nadia, and Viola and Dad's social worker Del, his friend Dr. Christopher Wolkenstein and all the wonderful nuns especially Sister Monica. Their kindness and care made his passing so very peaceful. Prayers will be said on Tuesday, November 2 at 8:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 3 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 737 Bannerman Ave. with Rev. Fr. Isidore Dziadyk, OSBM as celebrant. Interment to follow in Holy Family Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Harry's memory to CancerCare Manitoba, Box 2248, Stn Main, Winnipeg, MB R3C 9Z9. Dad was a quiet man, but when he did have something to say everyone listened. He was a good family man, loved his wife and daughter and especially loved his grandson Christopher. Dad will be greatly missed by all of us, who loved him, but now he's with God and with Mom and I know he's very happy. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044

MARGARETE TOEWS

MARGARETE ELISE TOEWS Our dear aunt and great-aunt, Margarete Toews ("Tante Margaretchen"), nee Hamm, died peacefully at Grace Hospital on Friday, October 29, 2004 at the age of 85. Her husband, Jacob Toews, went missing after the Second World War. She was also predeceased by her sister Irmgard Nass and brother Fritz Hamm. She is survived by her nephew Hans-Georg Nass and his wife Helene, of Charlottetown, PEI; great-nieces, Kathryn Nass of Vancouver, BC, and Monica Black (husband Steven Black); and great-great-nieces, Fiona and Klara of Halifax, NS. In addition, she is survived by her sister-in-law Ursula Toews, Germany. Her death is mourned by many friends and the extended family, consisting of her first cousins, their offspring, and respective families. Margarete Toews was born icon May 3, 1919 in Ladekopp, West Prussia, to Margarete Alice (nee Dueck) and Hans Hamm. She was baptized on Pentecost, 1935, and became a member of the Ladekopp Mennonite Church, the same year her father died due to cancer. She married Jacob Toews in 1940, when the war was already underway. He was drafted shortly thereafter. In 1945 she fled her homeland, surviving blood poisoning and typhoid fever. In 1946 she received two communications from her husband, Jacob, then in Russia, via the Red Cross. Thereafter, he went missing. Upon the untimely death of her sister Irmgard due to leukemia in 1951, Margarete assumed responsibility for her nephew Hans, raising him as her own son. After arranging care for handicapped brother Fritz, she immigrated to Canada during the winter of 1952, together with her mother and Hans. The family found a new spiritual home in the Sargent Avenue Mennonite Church. Margarete Toews worked eight years at Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home, and 20 years at Health Sciences Centre as a nurse's aide, purchasing her own house in 1960 and retiring in 1980. Tante Margaretchen remembered and acknowledged extended family members' birthdays. She enhanced celebrations such as weddings by authoring and reciting poems for the occasion. She remembered clearly her life's experiences and held the attention of listeners as she recounted those experiences with humour in a dramatic style. Opinions were expressed without reservations - she "told it like it is". Her church family and seniors' home family appreciated her many acts of volunteerism - teaching Sunday School and assisting with the meal program at Sunset House. Despite suffering many illnesses, including several types of cancer, congestive heart failure, and pulmonary fibrosis, her zest for life and faith in God did not waiver. At the time of her death our aunt was peaceful and was prepared to meet God. The Nass family lives at a distance and expresses thanks to caregivers Christine and Reinhard Penner. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, November 3 at 11:00 a.m. at Sargent Avenue Mennonite Church, corner of Sargent Avenue and Garfield Street. Viewing will occur prior to the service, as well as the previous evening, Tuesday, November 2, at 7:00 p.m. with a devotional service at 7:30 p.m. at Klassen Funeral Chapel, 1897 Henderson Hwy. In lieu of flowers, donations in the memory of Margarete Toews may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. KLASSEN FUNERAL HOME 1897 Henderson - North of McIvor - 925-1120
