MANUEL HELPER

MANUEL "MANDY" HELPER Manuel "Mandy" Helper, born icon May 20, 1913, gently passed away on October 10, 2004 at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. Married to Yetta (Orenstein) his beloved wife of 65 years. Father of Michael (Bonnie), Barbara (Rodney Slonim), Margo (Gregory Forrest); grandfather of Jeffrey, Cara and Steven Helper, Mark and Todd Slonim; great-grandfather of Melanie Cohn and Jaxson Helper. Mandy was much loved and will be truly missed by all his family including his nephews, nieces and close family friends. He will remain in our hearts and be a part of us, forever! Services were officiated on October 12 by Sid Halter at Shaarey Shomayim Synagogue. Pallbearers were Dr. Rodney Slonim, Todd Slonim, Dr. Steven Helper, Terry Hurtig, Don Devereaux and Dino Devuono. Honorary pallbearers were Saul Laskin, Paul Cooper, Bill Shaen, Dr. Jerry Stitt and Stan Segal. As a younger man, Mandy worked in the hotel industry and was manager of the Empire Hotel in Fort William. In November 1939 Mandy enlisted in the Royal Canadian Active Air Force which he served for more than five years. He ranked as Pilot Officer and Flight Lieutenant in the RCAF Special Reserve. Mandy spent the majority of his business career working diligently in the furniture business. Beyond work, Mandy displayed a wide range of interests throughout his life. As a sportsman, he began a highly successful career in running and football. These were replaced by handball and golf as he grew older. He participated in many other sports as well. Mandy shared his passion for chess, bridge and cribbage with his friends, children and grandchildren. Mandy was a 32nd degree Mason and lifetime member of B'nai Brith Lodge. The essence of Mandy was captured by all who honoured him - mainly his "joie de vivre" and his love and loyalty to family and close friends. Mandy's deep passion and devotion for Yetta influenced all his lifetime decisions and made a lasting impression on everyone. Flowers gratefully declined. JEAN LEVIS HINCE October 19, 1961 - October 11, 2004 It is with great sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of their beloved son, husband, brother, father and friend Jean. Jean's passion touched every aspect of his life, especially when it came to family. Jean was ambitious and relentless in his work. He shared his Joie de Vivre with one and all. Jean's humour and laughter were infectious and will be cherished. Jean's dedication, generosity, good will and pride remain an inspiration to us. DAVID KAFKA It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of David Kafka unexpectedly on October 12, 2004. He leaves to mourn him his loving wife and best friend, Susan; his mother, Doris Orton; four daughters and two step daughters; sons-in-law; eight grandchildren; three sisters-in-law; five brothers-in-law; two sisters and five nieces and nephews; business associates and numerous friends; his father, Ed and brother Brian predecease him. Dave lived his life with zest and speed. He always enjoyed living life to the fullest. He loved his tools, machinery, the Dominican Republic, making new friends and golf. He had a big heart and you could always count on him when you needed him for anything. Next to his wife, family and friends, his business Kafka Enterprises, was his life. BETTY CATHERINE LAING (nee KOTCHAPAW) Betty Laing, of Verner, ON, passed away suddenly on Friday, October 8, 2004, while on vacation in Delta, BC. She is survived by her beloved husband of 54 years, Alan; and five children, Catherine, Claude, Jenny, Ken and Mary; her grandchildren and two sisters. A private family service was held.

ALBERT LYNCH

ALBERT (BUD) WILLIAM LYNCH Suddenly, on Thursday, October 7, 2004, Bud Lynch of Winnipeg passed away at the age of 74 years. Bud is survived by his children, Carl (Eileen), Bill (Helen), Barry, Gail Zarichanski (Harry) and Mareen Korasil (Glen); grandchildren, Sherri (Dwayne), Shawn, Shannon, Jocelyn, Melissa and Willie; his special great-grandchildren, Cody, Katelin, Riley and Andrew; sister Beatrice Barry; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. Bud was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Evelyn Lynch; brother Frank Lynch; and his daughter Alyn Houghton. In compliance with Bud's wishes, a private family interment will take place at a later date. MARY ANN MARTIN (nee MacDONALD) With great sadness, the family of Mary Ann Martin announces her passing at the Victoria General Hospital on Tuesday, October 12, 2004 at the age of 80 years. EDNA MAXON

EDNA ROSE MAXON (nee PARK) Peacefully, with her family by her side, Edna passed away on October 13, 2004 at the Betel Home, Selkirk, MB. Edna was predeceased by her first husband Martin Moore and second husband Raymond Maxon; parents, Isabelle and John Park; brothers, Howard and James; sisters, Ethel, Lillian, Margaret, Audrey and Evelyn; and stepfather George Knight. She is survived by her children, Ruth (Ray), George (Judy), Percy (Jackie), Glen (Yvonne), Keith and Donna (Kerry). She was blessed with nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She also leaves surviving numerous nieces and nephews. Edna was born icon on June 6, 1915, residing in Lockport where she lived until taking up residence at the Betel Home on January 7, 1994. Mom was a gentle lady who possessed a great sense of humour, loved to dance and appreciated a good joke. She was well known for her lemon pies at the church bake sales. She was a longtime member of the St. Thomas A.C.W. Edna was a devoted to her extended family and always ready to lend a helping hand or a shoulder to cry on. Edna's children were her pride and joy and she guided them to trust in God's way and to love one another. Prayers will be said on Friday, October 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 16 at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Thomas Anglican Church, Lockport with Rev. Stephen Sharman officiating. Interment to follow in the St. Andrew's On The Red Anglican Churchyard. The family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to the staff at the Betel Home, Selkirk, who showed great care and compassion towards Mom over the years. MARGARET McMAHON It is with great sadness and deep sorrow that the family announces the sudden passing of their mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Margaret McMahon at the Goodwin Lodge, Teulon, MB on October 11, 2004. MITCHELL MURRAY

MITCHELL ANTHONY MURRAY 1961 - 2004 Suddenly at his residence in London, ON, on October 6, 2004 at the age of 42. He was the beloved son of John and Morna Murray of Ancaster, ON and brother of Pamela O'Leary of Winnipeg, MB. Mitch was a very loving son and brother and he will be dearly missed. Mitchell was born icon in Winnipeg and attended John Pritchard school in North Kildonan. After moving to Oakville, ON Mitch attended Gordon Purdue Collegiate and then graduated from Sheridan College. He was employed with various transportation companies including Canadian Pacific Intermodal Services where he became disabled as a result of a work related injury in 1984. Mitch has lived in Toronto, Hamilton, Owen Sound and London, ON since his accident. His life was difficult and often lonely after his injury, but he was always a loving and compassionate man who cared a great deal for all his family. He is also survived by his grandmother Clara Frantz of Selkirk, MB; his aunt Mary Ellen Wilks (Ken) of Winnipeg Beach, MB; his uncles, Verne Frantz (Maria) of Sardis, BC, William Murray (Denyse) of Birds Hill, MB and many cousins. Arrangements for a memorial service in Selkirk, MB will be announced at a later date. GEORGE OYSTRECK December 1, 1927 - October 12, 2004 And Then All of a sudden the sun sets and day is gone. All of a sudden the heart stops and life is done. All of a sudden - and then heaven's begun. Author unknown He lived his life for those he loved and those he loved remember. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 53 years, Dolaine; children, Vionne, Randy (Diane), and Estelle Hart (Robert); grandchildren, Jennie, Adam, Jaclyn, Jonathan and Devin; sister Jane Chypyha; and brother John; plus numerous nieces, nephews and friends. A special thank you goes to the doctors, nurses and staff at Seven Oaks General Hospital for their care and a heartfelt thanks to Susan and Margaret who seemed to know when they were needed. ERNEST PARKER

ERNEST LLOYD PARKER Surrounded by his loving family, Ernest Lloyd Parker peacefully passed into the arms of his Saviour on Monday, October 11, 2004. Predeceased by his parents; three sisters, Mary, Myrtle and Margaret; and seven brothers, Warren, Richard, Walter, James, Jeffrey, Wilfred and Russell. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 59 years, Peggy; children, David, Terry (Suzanne), Susan (Scott) Lougheed and William (Ardith); grandchildren, Graham, Laura, Darryl, Paige, Kelly, Sydney and Emma. Also surviving are his sister Eva Day; brother Tom (Ivy); and many nieces and nephews. Dad was born icon in the Qu'Appelle Valley on December 31, 1918, where he worked the family farm until the outbreak of the Second World War. He enlisted in the Army, being stationed in England and received his commission as a First Lieutenant from Sandhurst military College. While in England, he met and married his wife Peggy and returned to Canada at the end of the war. Shortly after returning to Canada, he joined Massey Ferguson where he started off as a Block Man, taking various posts throughout Western Canada. He and Peggy moved their family to Winnipeg in 1966, when he became the Western District Sales Manager, retiring in 1979. Dad enjoyed many happy times at his hobby farm outside Marquette. He also enjoyed travelling with Peggy, golf, curling and playing bridge with friends. The family would like to thank the care givers at the Deer Lodge Centre, for the compassion shown to our Dad. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 16 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. A reception will follow. SCOTT RICHARD PIANA March 15, 1984 - October 11, 2004 It is with great sadness that we announce the tragic, accidental passing of Scott. Scott will be deeply missed by his parents, Rick and Darlene; sister Kristina; grandparents, Hollis Kinsey and Frank and Elda Piana; special friend Heather; aunts, uncles, cousins and countless friends. Scott was predeceased by his grandmother Teena Kinsey. Scott will be fondly remembered as the boy in red who loved camping, fishing, playing with and walking Sadie, the family dog. His absolute passion was cars. He could be found regularly polishing his pride and joy. He enjoyed talking about and comparing cars with anyone, especially other car enthusiasts. Scott was enrolled in the Metals and Aerospace program at Murdoch MacKay Collegiate and attended classes at the Adult Education Centre in Transcona. He worked part time in the produce department at Superstore. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating Scott's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 16 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. (across from the Mint). Flowers gratefully declined. ERNEST JAMES SMITH January 12, 1912 - October 13, 2004 On October 13, 2004 at Vista Park Lodge, Ernest passed away. He leaves behind his wife Kay; children, Doreen (Thomas), Irene (Garry), Eric; stepchildren, Herb (Candice), Sylvia (Ike); 11 grandchildren, Tammy (John), Michelle (John), Barbara, Jason, Catherine (Ian), Charlene (Ian), Thomas, Shelley (Dan), Angela, Quin and Zunne; five great-grandchildren, Megan, Cody, Jessica, Kylee, Natalie. Ernest was predeceased by his first wife Barbara; daughter Lorraine; daughter-in-law Yvonne; sister Eva; brother Richard; and his parents, Susan and Henry Smith. He was born icon on Ellesmere Avenue in St. Vital on January 12, 1912. Dad spent from 1939 to 1945 overseas. During the Second World War with The Royal Canadian Core of Engineers, Worked at C.P.R., St. Vital School Division as a Stationary Engineer until retirement. Dad delivered Meals on Wheels with Kay from 1995 to 2003. He resided at lot 191 St. Mary's Road from 1949 until the flood of 1997, when he moved back to St. Vital where he resided until January 11, 2004 when he moved to Vista Park Lodge until his passing on October 13, 2004. Special thanks to nurses and staff at Vista Park Lodge for their care. A celebration of Ernest's life will be held on Saturday, October 16 at 3:00 p.m. at World Wide Church of God, 50 Barnes St. Flowers gratefully declined.
