SMITH - Emma 1910 - 2004 Emma Smith passed away at the Willow Creek Continuing Care Centre, Claresholm on October 10, 2004 at the age of 94. Emma will be lovingly remembered by her three daughters, Linda (Bob) Masters of Red Deer, Susan (Francis) Somerville of Nanton and Jean Lachner of Calgary; six grandchildren, Marianne, Jason (Mel), Rob (Ena), Karen, Carla, Michelle (Dustin); and one great-granddaughter Chloe. Emma was predeceased by her husband Bruce Smith in 1960. Her early years were spent in rural Saskatchewan, then in Hanna, where she met and married her husband. Together they farmed near Hanna, then later at Nanton. In 1987, Emma moved to Calgary, then a year ago, returned to Nanton. She enjoyed bingo and scrabble, writing poetry and family gatherings. Emma will be remembered for the hundreds of Alberta Wild Rose magnets that she painted. A Memorial Service to celebrate her life will be held on Friday, October 15, 2004 at the Nanton United Church at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at the Nanton Cemetery. TAKEYASU - Stacey Stacey Takeyasu, beloved son of Reiko, passed away suddenly on October 7, 2004, at his home in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 41 years, due to complications arising from diabetes.. Stacey (Stacks) was born on September 2, 1963 to George and Reiko Takeyasu in Lethbridge. He was the youngest of three boys and grew up with his two brothers, Lloyd and Trent. He attended Galbraith Elementary, Wilson Jr. High and Winston Churchill High. Football was Stacey's sport of choice and he played it with great enthusiasm. In Jr. High, he received the Linebacker of the Year award. During is high school years, he continued to play as part of a championship winning team. Stacey was accepted into the Law Enforcement program at the Lethbridge Community College. Upon graduating he applied to police forces across Canada. Although it was his dream to be a police officer he accepted a position as a Correctional Officer at the Lethbridge Correctional Institute where he worked for over ten years until he left for reasons of health. He started work as a Blackjack dealer at the Lethbridge Cash Casino. Later Stacey transferred to Calgary to work at the Cash Casino there. He expanded his repertoire so that he could work as a dealer, pit boss or supervisor; however, he particularly enjoyed working as a dealer, because it allowed him to interact with the patrons. In fact, he gained a reputation as a scrupulously honest dealer who was trusted by all. Stacey will be missed dearly by his friends and family. He is survived by his mother Reiko; brothers, Lloyd (Cynthia), Trent (ex-Patricia); nieces, Reanna, Cassidy and Sara-Jane; as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins, including Dr. Kathy Yamashita of Lethbridge, who was like an older sister to Stacey. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, October 16 at 10:00 a.m. at the Lethbridge Buddhist Church (1303 - 13 Street North) with Reverend Y. Izumi officiating. Cremation will follow. VAN LAAR - Jozeph November 1, 1915 - October 11, 2004 Joe Van Laar passed away peacefully at Peter Lougheed Hospital at the age of 88. WALKER - Derek Nicholas 1924 - 2004 Derek Nicholas Walker was born October 25, 1924 in Cheshire, England and died peacefully with his family at his side on Sunday evening, October 10, 2004. He is survived by his wife of forty-eight years, Shirley; his sons, Frank and Mark; daughter-in-law Terry; and his granddaughter Danielle. Derek attended Rugby School until 1942 and after a year at Peterhouse, Cambridge University, joined the British Royal Navy and served during World War II attaining the rank of Lieutenant. From 1947 to 1953 he worked in London, and earned his Chartered Accountant designation from The Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales. Derek immigrated to Canada in 1952 where he worked with Clarkson Gordon in Toronto and Calgary. Derek worked in the earlier days of the Calgary oil patch with Canadian Export Gas & Oil, which later became Placer CEGO until his retirement in 1988. In 2002, he was recognized by the Alberta Institute of Chartered Accountants for his fifty years as a C.A. In his retirement, Derek and Shirley enjoyed Aprils in Victoria and holidays in Maui. He enjoyed woodworking in his workshop at home, creating beautiful pieces of art. His priority was spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed camping, fishing, reading, cryptic crosswords, bridge and entertaining friends at home. WILLIAMS - Donald (Don) Arthur 1909 - 2004 Donald Williams of Calgary passed away at the Foothills Medical Centre on Sunday, October 10, 2004 at the age of 94 years. Don had a long career with C.P. Hotels. He was the past manager of the Empress Hotel in Victoria, Banff Springs Hotel, Chateau Lake Louise, Royal Alexandra Hotel in Winnipeg, and the Algonquin Hotel in St. Andrews, NB. He retired from the position of General Manager of the Palliser Hotel in Calgary in 1979. Don was a member of the Calgary Golf and Country Club, a life member of the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede, honorary life member of the Calgary Hotel Association, member of the Shrine Al Azhar Temple Greeters, Past Director of the Royal Order of Jesters, Past President of the Skal Club of Calgary, and former member of the Calgary Downtown Rotary Club. Don is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Joanne Williams of Kanata, ON, and Jim and Marnie Williams of Calgary; three grandchildren, Stephen and Kelly Anne Williams of Moncton, NB, Kelly and Steve Roslinsky of Red Deer, and Scott Williams of Victoria, BC; three great-grandchildren, Bradley Roslinsky, Nicholas Williams, and Paige Roslinsky; and a sister Bea Chatwin of Winnipeg, MB. He was predeceased by his first wife Jean in 1970, and his second wife Mary in 1991. WILLIAMS - Rosemary On Saturday, October 9, 2004 Rosemary Williams (nee Lloyd) of Calgary passed away peacefully at the Agape Manor Hospice. She leaves behind to remember her with great love and affection, her husband Frank; son Michael (Twila); daughter Linda (Mick); son Steven (Lori); her five beautiful granddaughters, Jessica, Meagan, Emily, Georgia and Lauren; her mum Christine; brother David (Bernadette); sister Christine; sister Sandra (Jim); brother Glyn (Christine); numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews, both in Canada and Great Britain, as well as many wonderful dear friends. Rosemary was born in Prestatyn, North Wales on December 4, 1949. She emigrated with her family in 1982 and made her home in Carstairs for many years before moving to Calgary. ROSENBERG - Amikam September 19, 1945 - September 7, 2004 Surrounded by his family, on his Rocky Mountain ranch near Golden, B.C. Amikam was predeceased by his parents, Zrubavel and Masha, his wife Sheila and his sister, Liora. He will be sadly missed by his life partner Madge Jeffery; his son Michael; his brother Danny; and Liora's children, Selina, Melissa and Kasey. A very kind and generous human being has passed away. SCHAYER - Chaim Chaim Schayer, surrounded by loving family in death, as he was in life, passed away September 8, 2004 (22 Elul, 5764). His was a life lived with compassionate kindness and we mourn his passing as we remember and cherish his life. He was married for fifty-eight years to his besheret, Rose (Pilc) and was the father of Norman (Evelyn Lieberman) and Hanna (Carl Cuneo) and adoring Zaydee to Michael, Cara and Joshua Schayer and Sara and Nomi Cuneo. Cecilia Guilas was his primary care giver for the last year and such was her devotion to Chaim that she endeared herself forever in his heart. SMITH - Harold "Alan" It is with great sadness that we share in the passing of "Alan" Smith. On September 8, 2004, the Lord took him home after a long battle with cancer at the age of 49 years. STECKLE - Kay Marie 1943 - 2004 Kay Marie Steckle passed away at the Foothills Medical Centre on Monday, September 6, 2004. STONEWALL - Grace 1922 - 2004 Grace Mary Stonewall (nee Little), beloved wife for sixty-four years of Mr. Oscar Stonewall, passed away at the Agape Manor Hospice, surrounded by her family, on September 7, 2004. Grace was a proud Calgarian, born and raised in Calgary to parents, David and Dorothy Little, early Calgary homesteaders and business people. A lifetime member of North Hill United Church (now Wild Rose United Church), she attended Balmoral and Crescent Heights Schools. Besides her loving husband Oscar (Oog), Grace will be greatly missed by her family, her three daughters, Bonnae (John) Anderson, April (Brent) Tilson, Merrilie Stonewall; and her six grandchildren, Cinnamon, Amber (Wade), Luke, Lane, Tiffany and Noel. Grace was very active in Community Service. An honorary life member of the National Council of Women and president (1959 to 1963) of the Local Council of Women, she was influential in the preservation and protection of Prince's Island as a park, in the formation of the Native Indian Rest and Friendship Center, and the preservation of James Short Cupola. Her longest commitment was to the acquisition of land for Nose Hill Park. She was an active participant in politics, served as president of Mount Royal College Auxiliary, served five years on the City of Calgary Library Board and served two terms as a member of the inaugural University of Calgary Senate. After her husband retired from the Calgary Herald, they became very active members of the Calgary Outdoor Hiking and Skiing Club, and the Calgary Senior Skaters. A Celebration of her Life will be held at Wild Rose United Church, 1317 - 1 Street N.W. on Friday, September 10 at 3:00 p.m., with Reverend Linda Hunter officiating. This will be followed by a Reception in the church (Christian Education Building). A tree will be planted in our mother's memory by McInnis and Holloway Funeral Homes. We wish to thank the Agape Manor caregivers for their very professional and compassionate care, allowing mother to pass with Grace and Dignity.
