WING - Joan Marjorie Taunton 1918 - 2004 Joan, dearly loved mother of Marje and Daff, mother-in-law of Barry, grandmother of Daniel and Tess and loved by so many other family members and friends, died peacefully at the Foothills Hospital on Monday, August 9, 2004. Joan was born on 18 September 1918 in Essex, England, the youngest of five children of Marjorie and Alexander Jamieson. She married her darling George in December 1945 in Naples, Italy. Together they traveled the world, living in England, Iran, Ghana and Kenya before moving to Calgary in 1968. Joan dedicated her life to the welfare and comfort of others. She was trained as a social worker at Bedford College, London. She served in the Red Cross from 1941 to 1946, first in North Africa, and then in Italy, where she became Area Director for Southern Italy and was awarded an MBE for her work. She made many contributions, including teaching ESL, while living in Persia and Africa. As a volunteer in Calgary she was President of Alberta UNICEF, worked the book cart at Foothills Hospital and gave more than twenty years of service to the Calgary Inter-Faith Food Bank. But family and friends were always her first concern and the numbers who grieve her death are testament to that. Joan's spirit was courageous, adventurous, and strong as reflected by the richness and variety of her life. Some of her happiest times were riding her pony Sally, alone across the New Forest, golfing and gardening in all her various homes, hiking and skiing in the Rockies and doing yoga. Joan and George had been married for fifty-three years when he died in 1998. In many ways, it was an attraction of opposites and their strengths complemented each other so that together they formed a powerful team. Joan carried on with her usual courage and strength after George's death but there is no doubt that her life was never the same without him. Joan is also survived by her sister Rosemary Howes and George's brother, Martin Wing. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Andrew's Anglican Church (1611 St. Andrew's Place N.W.) on Friday, August 13, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. with reception to follow at the church hall.
