BRIAN YOUNG

BRIAN CAMERON YOUNG It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brian Cameron Young, aged 68, on August 22, 2004, at the Health Sciences Centre. Left to cherish his memory are his son Glen (Cheryl); his daughter Terry; and grandchildren, Trevor, Keenan and Blake. Brian worked at the Health Sciences Centre as an electrician for 26 years until he retired at age 65. He enjoyed hunting and the outdoors. As requested by Dad no funeral service will be held. Cremation has taken place. A private family interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery at a later date. We would like to thank Dr. Unruh, Health Sciences Centre Emergency staff and the 4H wing staff for their excellent care and compassion. PAUL BERNIER

PAUL EDOUARD BERNIER Our beloved husband, father, grandpa and pepere passed away peacefully at home on August 21, 2004 surrounded by family and friends after a lengthy illness, at the age of 82. He is survived by Delia, his wife of 59 years; and three siblings, Roger (Eva), Alma (Maurice - deceased) Meilleur, and Simonne (Auray) Meilleur; also in-laws, Lea Raymond, Amanda and Leo Lagasse, Jeanne, Jeanne, Leontine, and Therese Meilleur; 15 children, Gerald (Sue), Andre (Lynne), Lionel (Pat), Claude (Evonne), David (Darlene), Paulette (Jack) Mann, Jocelyne (Jon) Slough, Carmelle (Clifford) Stodgell, Noella (Brian) Rudge, Marc (Joyce), Nicole (Ron) Gagaluk, Paul Jr. (Helen), Laurent (Linda), Richard (Diane) and Michelle (Terry) Truthwaite; 32 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Corinne,his young sister Florence and an infant daughter Marie. Paul was born icon in St. Jean Baptiste, MB on December 18, 1921. He began his journey to his current home in Fisher Branch at the age of 10 years driving a team of horses. From a young age he knew great responsibilities and developed a strong work ethic. He began his service in the Army at the age of 21 years, until his medical discharge in 1946. He followed in his dad's footsteps and took up the challenge of farming, which became his livelihood. However, to support his growing family he began work as a miner at the gold mines in Red Lake, ON for several months. To supplement his income he built several houses, including his own home. His skills as a carpenter was learned at the age of 14 as a logger with his father. He never shied away from helping others. His generosity of time and money knew no limits. Paul was involved in various committees that helped construct several local buildings; such as the Fisher Branch Elementary School, the community complex, as well as the major renovations to the Roman Catholic Church. He played an executive role in many local organizations such as the Royal Canadian Legion, Hodgson Branch #158, the Fisher Branch School Board and the Knights of Columbus. Despite his many achievements, one of his greatest gifts was his ability to create. He held two patents for farm equipment. His many hobbies included playing the violin, singing in the church choir, playing hardball and hockey. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and curling. In later years he enjoyed trips with Delia, travelling to Australia, New Zealand, the South Pacific, Europe, Yukon and Alaska, Palm Springs for 14 winters, and his last trip was to Mazatlan, Mexico in 1999. But his greatest love was his enjoyment of family and friends. Everyone was welcome at the Bernier household. He will be dearly missed. Many thanks to all those who performed such acts of kindness with a visit, a hug or a kind word. Your donations of food, money or homes are so greatly appreciated. Thanks to all of dad's support services in the community such as Percy E. Moore Hospital. Fisher Branch Clinic and Fisher Branch Personal Care Home. Many of these staff members became a part of our family. Special thanks to Adele Plishka whose endless support to Mom and Dad can never be measured. Pallbearers are his grandchildren, Christopher, Michael, Aaron and Claude Jr. Bernier, Kyle Stodgell, Steven Gagaluk. LYNN BLAKEY

LYNN GAIL BLAKEY (nee ZARICHNEY) April 10, 1945 - August 23, 2004 After a short battle with cancer, Lynn Gail Blakey passed away at the Concordia Hospital, with her family be her side, at the age of 59. Lynn will be missed by her three children, Coreen (Tom), Ginger (Terry), Brent (Jasmine); and grandchildren, Anthony, Jennifer, Michael, Shaun, Drew, Marcus, Reese and Evan. She is also survived by her sister Peggy (Odis) Waters. She was predeceased by her mother Mildred Chercoe, father Mike Zarichney, brother Robert Zarichney, and by her nephew Stacey Durie. Lynn was a very loving mother and grandmother and will be loved and missed forever. At Lynn's request, cremation has taken place and there will be no formal service. A private gathering of family and friends will be held at the graveside. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 5 Kent St., Winnipeg, MB R2L 1X3. VERA KATHLEEN CARNE (nee Setter) June 4, 1919 - August 20, 2004 The very much loved wife of Bill (W.B.) passed away at her home in Chilliwack, BC. Only sister of Ruth Toal, five children and their families. Predeceased parents, Allec (Sandy) & Elsie Setter and brother-in-law Jimmy Toal. Vera grew up in Elmwood and attended George V, Lord Selkirk and St. John's Tech. Over the years, she dedicated her time to Guides and Brownies. She also participated in many sports. A memorial service will be held on August 25, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Anglican Church, Chilliwack.

VIOLET HILDEGARDE EVANS (nee THORELL- ANDERSON) September 10, 1915 - August 23, 2004 Peacefully on Monday, August 23, 2004 Violet passed away at the Victoria Hospital. Predeceased by her husband Ray, sister Mildred, mother Emma Christina Anderson, stepfather Oscar Anderson. Vi is survived by her sister Elvy Foubert (Ray); nephew Randall Foubert (Marie) daughter Renee (Joel); niece Alison Dery (Bob) sons, Vince (Jaimie) daughter Jayden, Roger (Brandie), Curtis (Tanya) daughter Kyarra along with many other nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. Vi spent almost 30 years working with the Manitoba Queens Printers. After retirement Vi devoted much of her time volunteering for many organizations and very generously donated to many charities. Vi had a wonderful sense of humour and was a very warm, caring and loving person with everyone she knew. Many enjoyable and entertaining years were spent at the cottage in Berens Lake. In accordance with Vi's wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial service will take place at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway, on Friday, August 27 at 11:00 a.m. A private family interment will take place at St. Vital Cemetery. JAMES HANTON Peacefully on Friday, August 20, 2004, James Hanton, aged 81, passed away at the Deer Lodge Centre. He was predeceased by his wife Marion in 2001; his sister and brother-in-law, Aina and Elof Sandstrom of Kenora, ON; and brother-in-law Harry Isaacson of Thunder Bay, ON. James will be lovingly remembered by his son David (Violet) of Grand Prairie, AB; grandchildren, Lisa of Calgary, AB and Billy of Grand Prairie; great-granddaughter Kayden Lyne of Grand Prairie; nephew Ken Sandstrom of Kenora; as well as other family and friends. James' career with the Canadian Pacific Railway took him from Kenora to Winnipeg, where he retired from the Weston Shops in 1983. Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 25 at 3:00 p.m. at the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. James will be laid to rest with his wife Marion in the Lake of the Woods Cemetery at a later date. MARGARET KEELAN

MARGARET MARY KEELAN (nee HEWITT) It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mother. On August 22, 2004 with her family by her side, Mary joined God in Heaven. Mary was born icon in Toronto, ON, the eldest daughter of Jack and Gertrude Hewitt. The family moved to Winnipeg where she attended St. Mary's Academy. She graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree. She married John Patrick Keelan and together they raised five children in their family home on Borebank Street. Mary is now reunited with her parents and her husband Pat. She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her sisters, Patricia Bean and Joan Sutherland; her children, Joanne, Mike, Patrick, Maureen (Bujar) and Ron; daughter-in-law Kathy; grandchildren, Dave (Laura) Danny, and Alyson; and great-grandson Chase; as well as many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbours. Mary was a devout Catholic and longtime member of St. John Brebeuf parish. She was a tireless volunteer, always willing to help those in need. Benefitting from her efforts were Meals on Wheels, Agape Table, Sisters of Mother Teresa, St. John Brebeuf school and parish, St. Ignatius Refugee Committee, League for Life, Canadian Cancer Society, and many other charities and worthy causes. She enjoyed travelling and spending time with her family. One of her favourite places was her cottage at Victoria Beach. She loved animals, especially her dogs Dutchy and Bruin and granddogs Bugsy and Annie. Mary lived her life for others and was especially devoted to her dear family. Her children never doubted her love for them and could always count on her support. Though we know she is now with God, she will be dearly missed. We love you Mom and Nanna. RUTH McNairnay

RUTH McNAIRNAY Ruth McNairnay (nee McDonald), at Vernon Jubilee Hospital on August 21, 2004. Born to John McLeod McDonald and Flora Ann (MacAskill), in St. Boniface, MB, on September 24, 1917, Ruth was the youngest of six children. She spent her formative years in Winnipeg and was employed with the T. Eaton Co. She married Hugh Cavell McNairnay in Winnipeg November 30, 1940. They had four children, Ian Donald (Gail) of Armstrong, Hugh Roderick (Georgina) of Salmon Arm, Marion Jean Ottmann (Lawrence) of Cochrane, AB and Neil Gordon (Beverly) of Red Deer, AB. Ruth and Hugh raised their family in Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon and Ponoka. Ruth devoted her life to her husband and children and developed many lifelong friendships along the way. She was extremely proud of her Scottish heritage. She was a member of the Masonic Family and was Worthy Matron of Battle River Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, in Ponoka, AB in 1974. Following Hugh's retirement, they lived in Chilliwack, Qualicum Beach, Kelowna and Armstrong. Ruth was a resident of Pleasant Valley Manor, Armstrong, for the last six years. She is survived by her children, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Special thanks go to the staff at Pleasant Valley Manor, ICU Dr. B. Chi and the nursing staff at Vernon Jubilee Hospital, for Ruth's care. In memory of Ruth, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. MABLE DOROTHY McRAE May 8, 1920 - August 22, 2004 Passed peacefully away surrounded by family and friends on August 22, 2004. Mable is survived by her children, Lawrence Monkman (Shirley), Charlotte Campbell (Ed), Dee Slater (Alan), Alan McRae (Leslie) and David McRae. She leaves 18 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews and relatives in the Fisher River area. She was predeceased by her parents, Margaret and James Crate; husbands, William Monkman, Burnette McRae and George Mason; also by sons, Richard and Ross McRae and George Mason Jr. She was also predeceased by 12 brothers and three sisters. BARICA (BARBARA) MEDVEN In the loving circle of her family Barica left to join her saviour on August 23, 2004 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Barica is now at peace. Barica was predeceased by her parents, Dragica and Janko Bendekovic; her sisters, Katica and Karmen and Valerija and nephew Dubravko. Left to cherish Barica forever in their hearts is her loving husband Mijo; her son Michael, daughter-in-law Laura and granddaughter Ashley; sister, Marica, brother-in-law Steve and nephews, Dennis and Bryan. She also leaves to mourn her brothers and sisters in Croatia, Zlatko (Jelica); Mijo (Dragica); Ljubica (Ivica) and Verica; nephews, Andjelko and Kresimir and niece Karmena (Josip). Barica was born icon in Medven-Draga, Croatia. She came to Canada in 1962 where she wed her husband Mijo of 42 years. In 1964 she gave birth to their son Michael. She worked for many years with the Creamette Company till she retired in 1992. In 1994 her granddaughter Ashley was born icon who she loved more than life itself. She loved her family, home, garden, and church and was happiest doing her hobbies of needle points, crocheting, knitting and many other crafts, as well as cooking and baking. She also loved being involved with the church community and activities. HELEN MIKALKO

HELEN MIKALKO Peacefully at home in her residence at The Portsmouth, Helen Mikalko passed away on August 22, 2004. She is lovingly remembered by her many friends and family members, who will dearly miss her quick wit, her spirit, her kindness and her compassion. Helen was predeceased by her parents and her seven sisters and her brother, and is survived by many nieces and nephews. Helen was born icon on November 16, 1905, and was raised in Mikado, SK. She later moved to Regina and from there, went to Toronto in the late 1930s where she became involved in efforts for the Second World War. After the war, she became employed in the fur industry, first in Toronto and later in San Diego, CA. In 1988, Helen relocated to Canada, settling in Winnipeg where she became reacquainted with her family, and where she quickly made many friends in her residence on Boulton Bay. She brought to family gatherings many stories of her youth, and through the sharing of her memories, (almost a century of them), and her many cherished photographs, she gave her family's younger generation a greater sense and understanding of their own heritage. "Aunt Helen" was truly admired and respected by four generations of nieces and nephews who became her family. Many thanks to the staff at The Portsmouth for their kindness and compassion. Graveside service will be held on Friday, August 27 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Ave. Reception will follow at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home. FREDERICK WILLIAM JAMES NEALE January 4, 1927 - August 23, 2004 The family wishes to announce the sudden passing of their father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Fred will be deeply missed by his children Donna (Ken), Robbie, Kevin (Heather), Kelly (Kerrin), Tod (Carol), and all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Fred was predeceased by his wife Marie (1995) and his son Fred Jr. (1998). Fred retired as a staff sergeant after 35 years of service with the Winnipeg Police Service. As a long-time Shriner Fred was a proud member of the Shrine Pipe Band of which he was a past-president. During his retirement, Fred enjoyed curling with his friends in the Senators and Sportmans league at the Granite Curling Club. In his younger years Fred was very involved with Norberry Community Club where his children played sports. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 27 at Thomson Funeral Chapel 669 Broadway.
