PHILLIPS - Frank 1917 - 2004 Frank Alan Phillips, beloved husband of Gay Phillips of Calgary, passed away from prolonged Alzheimer's disease at the Colonel Belcher Care Centre, August 6, 2004 at the grand old age of 87 years. Frank was born in Hazelton, BC in 1917 and was educated at UBC, graduating in Commerce in 1947. In 1939, while studying at UBC, he joined the Royal Officer Training Corps. and was called into service in 1940. Frank served three years overseas with the B.C. Regiment in the tank corps. until 1945. He was twice wounded, once in France and once in Germany where he lost his left leg. Upon graduation Frank was employed by Shell Canada Limited. At the time of his retirement in 1978, Frank was Comptroller, Treasurer and Director of Shell Canada. Frank served as director of the Easter Seals Society (1972), President of United Way of Calgary (1977 to 1979) and the Third President of Financial Executives. Frank was a member of The War Amps of Canada, Calgary West Rotary Club, Earl Grey Golf Club and attended St. Laurence Anglican Church. Frank enjoyed extensive off shore traveling, books, music, golf and conversation with his many friends. For the past twenty years he lived between Calgary, Yakima WA, and Maui. He is survived by his wife Gay, his children and their spouses, Alice (Mike) Campbell of Adelaide, Australia, Frances (Stephen) Pickett of Vancouver, BC, Tom (Susan) Phillips, Robert (Melissa) Phillips of Brookfield, MA, Doug (Paula) Dawley of Portland, OR, and Gregg (Kris) Dawley of Ross, CA; fourteen grandchildren, Robert (Tina) Campbell, Mary (Kevin) Levere, Patrick and Laura McKnight, Rachel and Blair Phillips, Martha, Ian, and Graham Phillips, Lia, Ella and Clara Dawley, and Will and Emma Dawley. Frank was predeceased by his first wife Myrtle of forty-one years and mother of his children; sister Grace and brother Bob. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Colonel Belcher Care Centre for their loving care to Frank. REDINGER - Kevin Scott Kevin Scott, 33, passed away peacefully in the hospital in Trail, BC, on August 6, 2004, due to complications from ALS. Kevin will be missed by parents Joe and Sharna Redinger; sisters, Bev Conklin and Kim Lapsley and husband Drew; and his nieces and nephews. Born in Taber, AB, Kevin grew up overseas, spent time as an adult in Calgary, and finally settled in Rossland, BC, where he had made many friends. Many thanks to the residents of Rossland, who made him feel so welcome, and special thanks to Judy, Michelle, Mariah, Scott and Irene, who were his caretakers. An open house was held at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 10, at 1787 Columbia Avenue in Rossland. A Graveside Service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 12 at St. Thomas Cemetery

STRATHERN - George 1934 - 2004 George Strathern passed away at the age of 70, on Sunday, August 8, 2004 at his home, following a brief battle with cancer. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife Emily (Garbler); and his three children, John (Sylvia) Strathern, Cheryl Irwin (John Galloway), and Tom Strathern. Also survived by his four grandchildren, Luci, Jessica, Robert and Nicole; and his siblings, Joe (Betty) Strathern, and Ann (Art) Sullivan. TANTON - Eileen O. Eileen passed away on August 7, 2004 after an acute but short battle. Her life began in southern England on January 6, 1923. Her early years were spent primarily in Leysdown, on the Isle of Sheppy in Kent with her family, including her surviving twin brother Den Arnold. There, she met and married her beloved late husband Bob during the Second World War. This joyful union lasted some sixty years. After she moved to Canada, she raised three children, John, Barbara and Steve, who survive her today, along with four grandchildren, Lesley, Michelle, Jessica and Krista, and one great-grandchild, Justin. First settling in Penticton, they moved to Edmonton in 1952 and on to retirement in Calgary during the mid-seventies. Eileen was an individual who showed an all-embracing care and compassion for not only her family, but all she came to know. She worked for many years with the elderly in facilities in both Edmonton and Calgary. She was greatly loved and will be dearly missed by all who knew her. The family wishes to thank the staff at FMC, Unit 36, along with others, who provided her with heartfelt care and compassion during the last days of her life. HOLLINSHEAD - Ellen G. 1904 - 2004 Ellen Hollinshead of Calgary passed away in her sleep on Wednesday, September 8, 2004 at the age of 100 years. Ellen was born on May 26, 1904 in Johannesburg, South Africa to Nell and James Pender. She was schooled in South Africa and immigrated with her parents to England in 1922. Ellen earned her R.N. degree in 1927 at the Royal Victoria and West Hants Hospital in Bournemouth, England. She married Ernest William Wood on March 16, 1929 and they immigrated to Canada with their infant son in 1930. Ernest joined the staff of the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and Art where in the early 1950s he became Principal and later the President. He passed away in July of 1962 and five years later Ellen married Guy F. Hollinshead, a former school inspector, who passed away later that year. Ellen was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church and a resident of Trinity Lodge for twenty-five years. She had a special talent for knitting baby outfits and donated hundreds of them to various causes. Ellen is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Des and Shirley Wood and Dr. John and Christena Wood; three grandchildren and their spouses, Dr. Donna Wood and Brian Krausert, Jeffrey and Barbara Wood, and Carolyn and Reginald McLaughlin; as well as ten great-grandchildren. JONES - Thelma Beryl - Sister Mary Clare Thelma Beryl Jones - Sister Mary Clare, Sister Adorers of the Precious Blood. Peacefully in hospital on Tuesday, September 7, 2004. Daughter of the late John and Alice Jones. Sister is survived by her brother Kenneth and his wife Betty of Calgary; and a brother-in-law, Bernard O'Farrell of Edmonton. Predeceased by her brother Clifford and her sisters, Myrtle, Phyllis and Gwen; and survived by several nieces and nephews. Sister has served in general and local administration positions in many monasteries of the Precious Blood. JUSTICE - Erle Andrew "EJ" Erle "EJ" passed away Monday, September 6, 2004 at the age of 81, at the Brentwood Care Centre where he resided. Erle served as a Cannon in Anglican churches for many years, and after his retirement he taught school in the Calgary Catholic school division. Many knew him for the countless hours he spent over twenty-five years organizing what has become the "EJ" Justice golf tournament for children at the Lakeview golf course. He was also well known at the arenas where he attended many hockey games over the years. Although Erle had no immediate family, he is survived by his chosen grandson, Ross Manering and his family who became Erle's care givers over the past few years. At Erle's request donations may be made in his name to the music program at St. James School, 2227 - 58 Avenue S.W., Calgary T3E 1N6.
