Daryl Dennis Hennessy
Daryl Dennis Hennessy of Carnduff and Griffin passed away in his sleep on March 9, 1999 in Weyburn. Daryl was born in Radville on December 6, 1950. Daryl was a voracious reader. His well known eclectic interests ranged through carpentry, gardening, landscaping, geography, social justice, health care and many creative endeavours. His family will forever be grateful to him for the wonderful care he gave to his mother. He was predeceased by his father, Dennis, his mother, Joyce McNaughton, one brother, Timothy, one sister, Marylee, grandparents, uncles and special friends. Left to remember the good times are: four brothers Terry of Griffin, Brian (Kim) and daughters (Deanna, Elizabeth, Rae Ann) of Calgary, Mike (Susan) and son (Austyn), Tom and sons (Justice, Tanner), and one sister Sharon Preston (Ken) and children (Jody, Dana) of Fort Francis, ON; uncles, aunts and cousins. A graveside service will be held at Fairlight in the summer. May he rest in peace.
Walter Stanley Bailey
Walter Stanley Bailey, born March 26, 1927, passed away suddenly March 12, 1999. He was predeceased by an older brother Norman and his mother Mrytle Bailey of Weyburn. He is survived by his loving wife Beverley of Burlington, ON, his father J.C. Bailey, Weyburn, three brothers: Roy (Helen), Bengough, Ray (Ruth), Weyburn, John (Rose), Bedford, Texas; five sisters: Marie (Les) Nixon, Weyburn, Mavis (Kohzoh) Stonefield, Guelph, ON, Carol (Mark) Berger, Edmond, OK, Debbie (Bill) Vandermeer, London, ON, Margo (Don) Maxwell, Elbow, SK. Born at Wardsville, ON, spent most of his youth in Radville. Taught school at North Gladmar, Ceylon and Radville. Most of his career was spent medical textbook publications. Retired as Pres. of W.B. Saunders Medical Publications. Funeral service was held in Vineland, ON Tuesday, March 16. A memorial service will be held in the Church of Christ, Weyburn, Friday, March 19 at 2 p.m. Flowers gratefully declined. Arthur Oliver Arneson
Arthur Oliver Arneson passed away March 3, 1999 in Hudson Bay, SK at the age of 88 years. Art was born October 26, 1910 at Parry, SK to John and Bertha Arneson. He was the fifth of nine children. Art married Winnie Sambrook December 21, 1935. They moved north in 1937 where Art held various jobs in the Carragana area including logging, farming and working at the Co-op. Art and Winnie had two children, Shirley and Marvin. Another daughter, Deanne, joined the family in 1960. Art and Winnie moved to Hudson Bay in 1970 where Art worked for MacMillan Bloedel until his retirement in 1982. Art had a great love of music: both playing music and dancing. He shared his love for music with many people over the years through square dancing, old time dancing, playing for dances and teaching dance lessons. His violin and other musical instruments were his prized possessions and brought many hours of enjoyment. Art was predeceased by his parents in 1947, one brother and three sisters, and his son, Marvin in 1993. He is survived by his wife, Winnie; daughters Shirley (Jay) Hitchcock and Deanne Cairns; daughter-in-law, Gale Arneson; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. A service of remembrance was held Saturday, March 6 at 2 p.m. in St. Stephen's United Church, Hudson Bay, with pastor Jack Bylsma officiating. The memorial guest book was attended by Vivian Shepherd and Cindy Kuzek. Edna Whitrow gave a touching tribute to Art's life. The Community Choir, accompanied by Cheryl Palko on the piano, led the congregation in a selection of favorite hymns. Lunch and fellowship followed. A committal service was held at the Carragana Presbyterian Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons: Blaine and Darryl Hitchcock and Chris Arneson, nephew Stan Doughty, and family friends Ron Shepherd and Russell Kuzek. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Blair's Funeral Home.
Betsy Cullen
On Friday, March 12, 1999, Betsy Cullen, late of Weyburn, passed away at the Weyburn General Hospital. Predeceased by her parents, Carl and Philomene Rainville; her first husband, Clement Carruthers; her son, Charles Carruthers; four brothers: Alfred, Jules, Roland and Marcellin Rainville; four sisters: Mary Joyal, Alice Picard, Estelle Rainville and Lucy Walsh. Betsy is survived by her husband, Terry Cullen of Weyburn; one niece, Florida Bekar of Gravelbourg; one nephew, Martin (Liliane) Joyal of Willowbunch; one sister-in-law, Mary Glen and one niece, Jane Simons, both of England; as well as several great nieces and nephews. Betsy was born in Willowbunch, where she grew up with four brothers and four sisters and received her education. She took nursing at the Grey Nuns Hospital in Regina and received her Nursing Diploma there. She then took her Psychiatric Nursing at the Saskatchewan Hospital in Weyburn. On August 22, 1959 she married Terry Cullen in Weyburn. She was employed at the Saskatchewan Hospital for many years. Betsy belonged to the Legion Ladies Auxiliary, St. Vincent de Paul Parish, Catholic Women's League, Registered Nurses Association and the Grey Nuns Alumni. She enjoyed cards, spending time at Kenosee Lake and being with friends and family. All family functions were special to her. The Grey Nuns reunions also meant a lot to Betsy. Prayers were said Monday, March 15 at 8:00 p.m. from Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn. The Memorial Mass was held Tuesday, March 16, 2:00 p.m. from St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Weyburn, with Father John Mock celebrant. A private family interment will be held at a later date. For friends so wishing, donations may be made to a charity of choice, in her memory. Arrangements were entrusted to Fletcher Funeral Chapels Ltd., Weyburn.
Gerard Edward Garritty
Gerard Edward Garritty of St. Albert, AB passed away in Phoenix, Arizona at the age of 77 years. Gerard is survived by his wife Helen of 60 years, four sons, six daughters, 31 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, two sisters Patricia Beard of Weyburn, and Gwen Guthiel of Estevan. Predeceased by his parents May and Charles Garritty, brothers Gordon, Bud and Bernie. A memorial service was held in Edmonton on January 2, 1999.
Edward Owen Thomas
On Thursday, March 11, 1999, Edward Owen Thomas, late of Weyburn, passed away at the age of 83 years. Predeceased by his father and mother, Edward and Julie Thomas; his wife, "Winnie" on January 15, 1999; granddaughter, Sheila Thomas; son-in-law, Paul Picard; four brothers: John, Norman, Joe and George; three sisters: Gwen Brooks, Velma Kilpatrick and Bernice Scott. Owen is survived by his three children: Charlie (Alice) Thomas of Tantallon, SK; Mary Picard of Moose Jaw; and Bev Thomas of Regina; grandchildren: Lorraine (Allen) Kentz of Regina; Lynda (Kevin) Simpson of Weyburn; Terry Dahlman of Moose Jaw; Paula Tolley (Bob) of Moose Jaw; Candace Picard (Greg) of Moose Jaw; Randy (Brenda) Cheater of Regina; Naomi Magdaline (Robert) of Regina; eleven great grandchildren; two sisters: Elsie Moran of Moosomin and Verna Dube of Ottawa, ON; two brothers: Lloyd of Lethbridge and Griffith of Regina; and several nieces and nephews. Owen Thomas was born at Beausjeris, MB in 1915 to Edward and Julie Thomas. He was born into a large family. He received his education at Green Bay, MB, moving to Moosomin in 1926, and finishing his education there. Owen married Winnie Demorest in 1936 at Moosomin. In the early years he farmed at various places around Moosomin and Tantallon, during this time three children were born: Charlie, Mary and Beverly. He started working at the Grain Growers Elevator in 1955 in Rocanville, moving to Handsworth in 1959 to run the elevator there until 1981. He retired to Weyburn and worked for 4 1/2 years at Lightning Lube. During his younger years, Owen enjoyed playing ball and broom ball, curling and bowling. After retirement he became an avid TV sports fan. He enjoyed playing cards with his family and neighbours, and visiting with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral service was held Tuesday, March 16 at 11:00 a.m. from Grace United Church, Weyburn, with Bill Corkum officiating minister. Interment followed in South Cemetery, Moosomin, with Grace Armstrong officiating. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers. The active pallbearers were: Bob Rice, Kevin Simpson, Allen Kentz, Randy Cheater, Gordon Gurney and Robert Chabot. Those wishing to express their sympathy may donate to the Alzheimer Association. Frances Gertrude May Hill
On Monday, March 15, 1999, Frances Gertrude May Hill, late of Regina, and formerly of Regina Beach and Weyburn, passed away at the age of 66 years. Born April 27, 1932 in Ratcliffe, SK, Frances was predeceased by her parents: Ernest and Bertha Franklin and numerous aunts and uncles. Frances is survived by her loving husband and companion of 46 years, Clifford George Hill; sons: Mervin and Calvin (Bev); daughter, Janice and granddaughter Ronna; brother, Benjamin (Carolyn) Franklin; sisters: Hazel (Ken) Tripp and Charlotte (Art) Dament; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Frances and Cliff resided in Weyburn from 1952 until they retired in 1986 and moved to Regina Beach. They moved to Regina in 1997. While living in Weyburn, Frances enjoyed playing softball in her younger days and was an avid bowler until they moved to Regina Beach. She also loved gardening, both vegetables and flowers, enjoyed camping with friends and family and knitted many sweaters, afghans and other items for family and friends. Frances fought a long and courageous battle with emphysema. She was admitted to the Pasqua Hospital ICU in Regina on March 11 and died peacefully surrounded by love on the early morning of March 15, 1999. A memorial service was held Thursday, March 18 at 2:00 p.m. from Grace United Church, Weyburn, with Marilyn Anderson Corkum officiating. Cremation. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers. Donations can be made in her memory to the Lung Association of Saskatchewan. Arrangements were entrusted to Fletcher Funeral Chapels Ltd., Weyburn.
Opal Kittelson
On Saturday, March 20, 1999, Opal Kittelson, late of Weyburn, passed away at the age of 82 years. Predeceased by her parents Henry and Tressa Pelzl; her first husband, Edwin Kressin, one brother Daniel Pelzl; and one son, Darrel Kressin. Opal leaves to mourn, her husband Thomas Kittelson of Weyburn; one daughter Shirley (Wayne) Springer of Henning, MN; one son, Dennis (Leone) Kressin of Fountain Valley, CA; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Mary Kressin of Larimore, N.D., one step-daughter, Shirley Culbertson of Weyburn; four step-sons: Ron (Yvonne) Kittelson of Weyburn; Larry (Dorothy) Kittelson of Saskatoon; Dennis (Irma) Kittelson of Saskatoon; and Marv (Mary) Kittelson of Weyburn; numerous step grandchildren and great grandchildren. Opal was born on August 6, 1916 in Barney, North Dakota and spent most of her life farming in the area. She and her first husband, Ed Kressin raised their family on the farm. Opal was active in the Ladies Aid at church and enjoyed her abundant garden. When Edwin retired from farming in 1976 they moved to Mooreton, ND where they lived until Edwin's death in 1978. In 1982 she came to Canada after meeting Tom, and they were married in St. Luke's Lutheran church in Midale, in 1983. Tom retired from his Watkins business when Opal had her first stroke in 1987, and cared for her through two more strokes until a fourth stroke forced her into the nursing home, where she resided these past four years. Opal and Tom loved to travel together, visiting Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, Scandanavia, and many places in the US, Mexico and Canada. Funeral service was held Wednesday, March 24 at 11:00 a.m. from Zion Lutheran church, Weyburn with Pastor Ron Bestvater officiating. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers. A second funeral service was held Friday, March 26 at 10:30 a.m. from Peace Lutheran Church, Barney, ND with Rev. Tim Schiller officiating. Interment followed in Peace Lutheran Cemetery, Barne. Arrangements were in care of Hastings-Dionne Funeral Home Inc., Weyburn, and Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, ND.
Isabella Stals (Tharp) nee Haswell
Nov. 6, 1920-March 25, 1999
On March 25, 1999, Mrs. Isabella Stals passed away at the age of 78 years. Isabella is survived by her brother, Robert Haswell (Margaret); her son, David (Dianne) Tharp of Rainbow Lake; their daughter, Corinne (Allan), and their son Matthew; her daughter, Mary Tharp of Edmonton, and her son, James Tharp. Isabella was predeceased by her sister Mary MacArthur. Memorial service will be held at St. Timothy's Anglican Church, 8420-145 Street, Edmonton, Wednesday, March 31, at 3:00 p.m. Reverend Paul Robinson will officiate. In lieu of floral tributes, donations in memory of Isabella may be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation or Alzheimer Society of Edmonton. Arrangements in care of Westlawn Funeral Chapel.
Ralph Struble
On Sunday, March 28, 1999, Ralph Struble, late of Weyburn, passed away at the age of 83 years. Predeceased by his parents, Frank and Adeline Struble; his wife, Rose Struble; daughter, Pauline Struble; sisters: Anny Hutt and Margaret Shauf; brother, Joe Struble; and son-in-law, Tommy Supple. Ralph leaves to mourn his three sons: Donald (May) Struble of Weyburn; Dennis (Marlene) Struble of Estevan; and Richard (Ellen) Struble of Saskatoon; four daughters: Lorraine Supple of Estevan; Edith (Mike) Erhardt of Steelman; Yvonne (Ed) Garton of Estevan; and Maryann (August) Hochstein of Estevan; one sister, Phyllis Shauf of Estevan; two brothers: Frank Struble of Assiniboia; and John (Margaret) Struble of Estevan; he also leaves 15 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Ralph was born November 27, 1915 at Sec. 7, Tp1, Range 13 W2nd. He lived in the Bromhead-Tribune area and loved the farm. After retiring he moved to Weyburn and spent time with his family, grandchildren and many friends around town. Ralph then became a resident of Weyburn Special Care Home, where he lived at the time of his passing. Prayers were said Tuesday, March 30 at 7:30 p.m. from Hastings-Dionne Funeral Home, Weyburn, with Mary Ann Seitz presiding. The funeral mass was held Wednesday, March 31 at 10:30 a.m. from St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Weyburn with Father Francis Hengen celebrant. Interment followed in Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers. The active pallbearers were: Dennis Struble, Glen Hochstein, Dallas Struble, Bobby Koller, Darrell Garton, Robert Struble and Jessie Koller. Walter Melvin Norman
On Sunday, March 28, 1999 Walter Melvin Norman, late of Radville, passed away at the age of 91 years. Walter was born July 8, 1907 at Kerkhoven, Minnesota, USA. Predeceased by his parents, John and Christie Norman; three brothers: Albert, George and Leonard Norman; and five sisters: Mabel, Ella, Emma, Blanche and Lille. Walter leaves to mourn numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held Thursday, April 1 at 1:00 p.m. from Gladmar Lutheran Church, Gladmar with Pastor Martin Olson officiating. Interment will be at a later date. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers.
