LOTTIE ARMSTRONG
LOTTIE JEAN ISABEL ARMSTRONG On July 30, 2004, Lottie Jean Isabel Armstrong "Lod" - our Sister, Aunt, Great-Aunt, Friend, Parent and Champion, went to sleep peacefully with sister Dorothy Faris and nephew Scott Faris at her side. Left behind to rejoice that she has finally found rest and to celebrate a memorable and meaningful life are: Nephews, Brian (Bev) Armstrong, Frank (Hilda) Armstrong, Scott Faris, and Bob McClintock; Nieces, Sandy (Don) Chiupka, Shirley Gardner, Marilyn (John) Wade, and Carol (Gerry) Irving; Daughter-in-law Carol Faris, and all their children and grandchildren
that she cherished so much. Missing her especially will be those who grew up with the help of her guiding hand: Shaun Aston, Rob and Katya McClintock, Curran, Brenna, and Evan Faris, Debbie and Todd Armstrong, Heather Irving, and now Bree-Ann Carruthers. On July 13, 1914, bagpipes were played up and down Hetherington Avenue as the first daughter after eight boys was born
to William and Carlotta Armstrong in the house, built by her father, where Lottie would live her entire life. She outlived her nine brothers. Her beloved sister Dorothy remains to remember them all. Her father died in the 1918 flu epidemic. Lottie left school early to help support the family and went to work at Eaton's, eventually rising to become a Signature in the ladies' Suits & Coats on the 4th floor. She did buying, marketing and forecasting, became involved in designing clothing in consultation with Jacob & Crowley, and took courses in Economics and Merchandising. Lottie took a leave of absence from Eaton's during the Second World War to work at McDonald Aircraft, repairing damaged airplanes. She wanted to honour her brother Bill who served in the First World War, and Sandy (Ross) who, along with her brother-in-law Archie, made the ultimate sacrifice. She was instrumental in setting up a branch of the Airmen's Club in Riverview Church, organizing dances, and arranging billeting in homes to help young airmen trainees who came to Winnipeg from all parts of the Commonwealth feel less lonely. Lottie left Eaton's to become the first female insurance agent in Manitoba, then joined Ash Temple Limited and there found kindred spirits in Al Hunter and his wife Jean. Al and Lottie formed a team that made their branch an example across the country. She earned honours as Western Canadian Employee of the year. She received the President's Award for Distinguished Service in 1986, recognition previously given only to former Presidents. The following year she received another award for 20 years of Faithful and Dedicated Service. She traveled to head office and to several branches to implement the procedures she had developed. She officially retired at age 65 but worked well in her 70s as Al's right hand. She never lost her love of learning. At 90 she could still recite poetry that she learned in school. She learned furniture making and upholstery, which led to, among other things, the comfortable lounge in her favourite spot, the sunroom. Lottie became a competent carpenter, building the unique carport behind the house, and the rec room that became the "hangout" for Bob and Scott's friends as they grew up. She was active in the Young Liberals, meeting with many notables of the era and was many times encouraged to go into law or politics. "Kids" was a watchword for Lottie. She had none of her own, but helping children was her passion. She volunteered at Shriner's Hospital, singing, telling stories, and handing out "sleeping pills" - Smarties. She even accompanied one particular little girl back to her home in Vancouver. She sang in the choir at Riverview Church, was Superintendent of the Junior High C's, and decorated the choir loft for Christmas Pageants. She constructed and wired the Christmas window decoration at home that to this day draws people to pass by and even knock on the door. In the summer, her garden also brought many visitors to admire the carefully planned beauty. Lottie led an imaginative campaign to save the fire hall at Osborne and Arnold, and always took an interest in local affairs. She loved to cook and bake, and her trays were eagerly awaited by friends and family. In the early years of the Children's Hospital Book Market, Lottie organized the moving of books, drafting into service nephews Brian, Bob and Scott, and Scott's friends from the Churchill Bulldogs, most of whom showed up on Lottie's 90th birthday to pay their respects. She was a member and Treasurer of the Annie A. Bond Guild at Children's Hospital, and was Teddy Box Chairman until her failing health and declining vision forced her to pass on the torch. On her 90th birthday as many of her "kids" as could attend played a final game of Tin-Can baseball. She struck out Scott, then amazed everyone by hitting the ball three times in a row! This was followed by a party at which people whose lives she touched came to tell her how much she was loved and respected: family, neighbours and friends. At her request, there will be no funeral service. Those wishing to remember Lottie may do so by making a contribution to the playroom established in her name at Childen's Hospital. The staff at St. Boniface Hospital, with kindness and compassion helped Lottie to her final rest, especially Julia Ann Purcha, who was gentle with Lottie and comforted Dorothy and Scott. GERTRUDE BARTEL (nee GUENTHER) Gertrude Bartel passed away on Wednesday, August 4, 2004, at the Salvation Army Hospice, Winnipeg, where she was for a brief stay, following being cared for by her daughters, Viola and Ella, at Viola's home. Gertrude was born
to Abram and Katharina Guenther on May 12, 1912, at Edinburg near Gretna, MB, the youngest and last to survive of 12 children. On October 29, 1935, she married her beloved Wilhelm Bartel, with whom she shared 67 years. He predeceased her in 2002. They lived a few months in Manitoba after their marriage, before moving to Drake, SK, where they farmed for 35 years. They retired first to Calgary, AB, for 10 years, and then to Winnipeg, MB, where they lived until their deaths. Gertrude and Wilhelm were the parents of seven children, Helmut (Carolyn Tate) of Honey Brook, PA, Wesley (deceased), Lillian (Jacob) Elias of Kokomo, IN; Ella Pankratz of Winnipeg, Walter (Delphie, deceased) of Winnipeg; Viola (Brian) Hood of Winnipeg and Arny of Okotoks, AB; 21 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Gertrude loved her family and was faithful and active in the church, contributing as a Sunday school teacher and in practical acts of service, hospitality, and visiting shut-ins. Gertrude loved the farm. She enjoyed gardening both vegetables and flowers. She was dearly loved and will be missed by her family and by many relatives and friends in the church and in the neighbourhood. Funeral service in memory of Gertrude will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 9 at Sargent Avenue Mennonite Church, 926 Garfield St. N., with a luncheon to follow. SANDRA BIRNIE It is with love and heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of our wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend, Sandra Birnie. Left to cherish her memory is her devoted husband George, daughters, Llisa and Kyla, mother Anne, sister Carol and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters-in-law. She will also be greatly missed by her many friends. Sandra was predeceased by her father Carl, who passed away in 1993. She will be remembered as a warm, caring and generous soul who always thought of others first. She loved spending time with her family and friends. Sandra and George were married in January 1972. In the years that followed they had two daughters, Llisa and Kyla. Sandra devoted her life to her family. She will be dearly missed. THE REVEREND CANON JOHN DORAN CAIRD November 26, 1939- August 5, 2004 Peacefully on Thursday morning, in the arms of his family, John passed away at the Riverview Health Centre after a heroic battle with cancer. John is survived and will be deeply mourned by his loving wife of 42 years, Anne Veronica; his son Robin; his daughter Meredith; his son-in-law Jeff McLeod; his two beloved granddaughters, Morgann and Mallory; his sister Margaret of Edinburgh; and his two nieces, Susan (Stewart and Katie) and Laura. John was born
in Edinburgh on November 26, 1939, and grew up in the borders of Scotland. He returned to Edinburgh to attend Heriot-Watt University where he obtained his Bachelor of Science in organic chemistry. He was employed at the Department of Clinical Endocrinology and later at the Department of Bacteriology at the University of Edinburgh, where he met Anne. They were married in September 1961. John and Anne immigrated to Canada in 1965 where he became a research assistant at the Department of Medical Microbiology at the University of Manitoba Medical School. Feeling the call to the Anglican ministry, John attended St. John's College from 1975 to 1978 and obtained his Master of Divinity. He was deaconed at St. Michael and All Angels church in 1977 and was priested at St. John's Cathedral in 1978. He subsequently served as curate at St. Mary Charleswood from 1977 to 1980 and as Rector of Stonewall area parishes from 1980 to 1983 where he became rural Dean. He was called as Rector to St. James the Assiniboine, Winnipeg, in 1983 and remained there until his early retirement in December 2002. He was honoured to be made a Canon of St. John's Cathedral in 1994. John was involved in many organizations and activities. He was a member of the St. Andrews Society of Winnipeg where he served as the Bard for many years until his death as well as President of the Society in 1997 to 1998. John's lifelong love of poetry led him to create his own works. As the Bard of the St. Andrew's Society, each November he wrote a new poem for the Society's annual dinner menu, and he wrote many other verses that will be treasured by the family. He was proud to be a Councillor for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba where he served in many capacities from 1989 until June 2004. John was Padre of the Army Navy and Air Force Unit 283, who honoured him with a life membership in August 2002 for his dedicated service. He served in many diocesan capacities and was Editor of the Rupertsland News for many years. John's passion for the high and wild places led him to climb most of the larger mountains in Scotland and Wales. He was a dedicated member of the Junior Mountaineering Club of Scotland until he left Scotland for his future in Canada. John was a wonderful storyteller who liked to share jokes and his love of good scotch. The family cottage was a source of great pride and joy in John's life as was "the little white dog" Chloe. For their compassion and support, the family wishes to thank Dr. A. Leylek, Dr. M. McConnell, Dr. G. Crawford, Dr. M. Garcia and the staff of the St. Boniface Palliative Care Unit and the Riverview Health Centre 3 East. Our deepest thanks go to Chris Carlyle, nurse in the community, who went the extra mile to keep John comfortable while he was at home. John touched the lives of so many. So much of himself he gave to others. He will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. John is greatly loved and will never be forgotten. The void that has been left will never be filled. A Requiem will be held on Tuesday, August 10, 2004, at 1:30 p.m. at St. John's Cathedral, 135 Anderson Ave., Winnipeg. ROSE HOLMES Peacefully, with family at her side, Rose Holmes, 81, passed away on Saturday, the 24th of July, 2004. Rose was the personification of goodness, a quality acknowledged and appreciated by the people who were privileged to know her in work environments or social settings. Her sewing and culinary skills were outstanding, as was her energy, strength of character, tenacity of spirit, sense of humour and commitment to family. Her memory will be cherished, as she was cherished, by her children Linda Carman (Ron), Joanne Tabor (Richard), Susan Howery (Terry), Gerry Holmes (Debbie Russell), and by her grandsons, Christopher (Michelle), Scott (Trevor), Adam, Graham (Tara) and Michael. Her family circle was completed and complemented by Debbie's daughters, Erin (Dominic) and Jennifer (Ryan and their children) and by her nieces, Elizabeth Wilson and Diana Wendt. Mom lived with diabetes. for many years and was fortunate to be in the care of Dr. Angus McGowan, who saw her through many medical issues and crises. Our family will always be grateful to both Angus and his wife Barbara for their kindnesses and appreciative of the staff at Victoria General Hospital and Deer Lodge Centre whose care, attention and humour eased or brightened Mom's days. We feel blessed that our family was able to be with Mom before she passed away and further blessed that our subsequent gathering resulted in a remarkable and tangible testament to her life, her love for us and to our love for one another. She was a unique, amazing lady whose ideals, principles and values will continue to guide us and whose love for us will live on in our hearts. MYRTLE INGRAM (nee McLEAN) It is with great sorrow that the family announces the passing of Myrtle Harriet Ingram at the age of 72 on August 3, 2004 at her residence in Selkirk, MB. She was predeceased by her daughter Cindy Marie in August 1974; her parents, Norman and Dorothy McLean. Mom will be lovingly remembered by her children and grandchildren: Marilyn Ingram and son Aaron; Charlene and Ron Pruse and son Matthew; Patricia and Tom Williams and daughter Tina-Marie; Kevin and Valerie Ingram and son Anthony and daughter Tamara; and her husband Lloyd Ingram. Myrtle's interests included fishing, bowling, curling and bingo, which kept her active and involved in the community. She will be sadly missed by family and friends in the Winnipeg and Selkirk area. The family would like to extend their warmest thanks to Sharon Hoffman and Margaret Oliver, and also Myrtle's neighbours and homecare workers for their helpfulness and friendship to our mom. RICHARD (DICK) JARMOC Suddenly, but peacefully, Richard Jarmoc passed away in his sleep at Seven Oaks Hospital, Thursday, August 5, 2004 at the age of 72 years. Richard is survived by his beloved wife of 24 years, Ruth; six step-children, Bill, Gwen (Phil), Haroldene (Kevin), Sharon (Don), Kim (Harv) and Val; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and his sister Toni (Bernie) and her family. Richard was employed with Canada Post for over 30 years. After he retired, he resided in Gimli for 16 years, before returning to Winnipeg. CHARLES (CHARLIE) KARL KAHLER It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of Charlie Kahler at the age of 73 on August 4, 2004 at the Health Sciences Centre. He is survived and mourned by his wife of 49 years, Betty; daughter Janice and granddaughter Amanda Haras; daughter Lori Kahler-Papakae; and son Greg (Mary) of Calgary, AB. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Christina; brother Peter; sister Rose Taras; granddaughter Leanne Haras; sister-in-law Irene Fonso; mother-in-law Martha and father-in-law Edward. He also leaves to mourn sisters, Pauline Robinson (Doug), Margaret Hersley (Ray), Kay Lyn (Ken) of Sicamous BC; brothers, Edward, Brian (Louise) of Fort Frances, ON; sisters-in-law, Ann Kahler and Linda Lake (Allan); as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Charlie was born
on December 21, 1930 in Camper, MB. He and his brother Ed partnered to operate Petro Canada Stations in Charleswood and the Maples for over 25 years. He truly enjoyed fixing cars and socializing with his regular customers. He also enjoyed the following years driving his truck for United Rentals. After retiring he spent hours catching up on his reading and just plain relaxing. The family sends their thanks to Dr. Drachenberg and the nurses and staff of Ward GH3 at the Health Sciences Centre for their diligence, care and compassion. Following his wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service will take place at a later date. BETTY KEICHER Peacefully, on Friday, July 30, 2004 Betty Keicher, aged 74 years, passed away at the Charleswood Care Centre. Betty will be sadly missed by her daughters, Carla (Jerry) Droznak and Carrie Keicher; grandson Darryl (Kristy) and great-grandson Christopher. She was predeceased by Frank, her husband of 42 years. Betty (nee Hertrich) was born
in Bridgeport (now Waterloo), ON, the ninth of ten children. In 1951, she married Frank Keicher and moved to Winnipeg. Throughout her marriage, she supported her husband's ministerial work with the New Apostolic Church and was a faithful member until her death. She also worked as receptionist at Bruno's Hairstyling for over 25 years. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Unit 1 at the Charleswood Care Centre for their compassionate care of Betty during her short stay there.
