HUGHES - James Hughes Sr. James Hughes Sr., has lived a century, and passed away December 9, 2003 as a result of the effects of old age and a life well-lived. As was often the case, he was surrounded by family. James Allen Hughes was born at the Wintercott farm near Leominister, Herefordshire, England, September 13, 1903, the eldest son of Allen E. and Lizzie Hughes. His family raised purebred Herefords that originated from a purebred herd founded by his great-uncle in 1845. Some documentation indicates the family was in the cattle business as early as 1761. In 1928, seeking greater opportunity and good cattle country, Jim took advantage of the CPR immigration program, and landed in Alberta, working for a short time at Crossfield before coming to the High River area. In 1930 he was joined by his brother Tom. In 1932, Jim and Tom bought a purebred Hereford herd and a property on Pekisko Creek, with a down payment and ten years to pay the balance to Sam Mace. They showed their cattle from Calgary to Montana to Toronto, bringing home several Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion ribbons. Jim and Tom were joined by their sister Nancy in 1931, and their mother in 1936. The 1930's was a tough time for nearly everyone on the prairies, but they made it through with the determination and creativity characteristic of their generation. In 1936, they could not make their payments, so Mr. Mace lived with them for the year. In 1939 Jim married Mary Gardner, member of a pioneer family from Pekisko, and they continued to live at the Mace place until they moved to the Hanson place, known as Chinook Ranch in 1953. In 1950, Jim had focussed on building a commercial herd, and sold his purebred herd. Located four miles southwest of Longview, he bought the ranch and some adjacent range from the old Bar U Ranch because it is where chinooks often come earlier and clear the fescue covered hills of snow for easier grazing. Cattle, and to be specific, Hereford cattle, were a prime interest in Jim's whole life. The spring bull sales and fall calf sales became a much anticipated social outing to visit with friends from throughout the cattle industry. He also always enjoyed the occasional political discussion. In 1984, Jim proudly received an award from the Alberta Hereford Association as an Outstanding Commercial Hereford Breeder. Jim enjoyed and was dedicated to his family. He and Mary raised six children, Jim (Barbara) of Longview, Bob (Mary) of Calgary, Don (Margaret) of Courtenay, BC, Charlie (Muriel) of Longview, Irene Leeds (Doug) of Claresholm, and Ken (Denise) of Springbank. He was the patriarch of an expanding family that extends to twenty grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Jim and Mary were fortunate to be able to live on the ranch until four years ago. Over the years Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening, and taking his friends and guests across the foothills to share his good fortune of being able to live and raise cattle in some of the best cattle country in the world. Jim's ambitions included building a life and a good reputation in a new land, raising a family, enjoying life, raising good cattle, always paying his bills, and living to be 100. He did all that and more, and he did it well. The family is particularly grateful to the caring team at the High River Hospital and Nursing Home, and encourage donations in lieu of flowers to support programs at the nursing home (High River Hospital Foundation, for Second Floor, 560 - 9 Avenue West, High River, T1V 1B3). They made a great contribution to Jim's quality of life over the past few years. Jim possessed the gift to be able to tell and enjoy good stories. The family invites friends and neighbours to join in a celebration of his life on Saturday, December 13 at 2:00 p.m. at the SNODGRASS FUNERAL CHAPEL in High River, followed by a reception where we can all share a few good stories.
