HARCHAND KAUR GREWAL Our beloved Harchand Kaur Grewal ("Bibiji") was born
in Dakha, District Ludhiana, Punjab, India on July 1, 1916. The daughter of a well known family in the district, Bibiji was predeceased by: her father, Jaildhar Bakhtawer Singh Sekhon and her mother, Punjab Kaur Sekhon; her sister Harbant Kaur Claire; her brothers Harbant Singh Sekhon and Ajmail Singh Sekhon; her husband Harchand Singh Grewal; and her son-in-law Inderjit Singh Claire. Bibiji is survived by her daughter Baljit Kaur Claire; grandchildren: Harinderjit Kaur Cheema and husband Dr. Gulzar Singh Cheema, Jatinderpal (J.P.) Singh Claire and wife Loretta Marie Claire, Jagjit Kaur Claire and Mohinderpal (Paul) Singh Claire and wife Kiranjit Kaur Claire; great-grandchildren: Anuraj Singh Cheema, Kiranjit Kaur Cheema, Haley Jordan Kaur Claire and Jared Paul Singh Claire; and Bibiji's sister's children, and families: Satwant Singh Claire and wife Manjit Kaur Claire and children, Sukhjit and Rita, Balwinder Singh Claire and wife Sukhminder Kaur Claire and sons, Justin and Jimmy, Manjit Kaur Brar and husband Kulwant Singh Brar and sons, Jasminder and Harry, and Tejinder Singh Claire and wife Balwinder Kaur Claire and sons, Tejvinder and Jaspinder. A strong-willed and outstanding woman in every way, Bibiji lived her life with dignity, humility and great determination. Her strength borne out of her deep religious beliefs and conviction and the sacrifices she made throughout the course of her life. Born in an age when most young women were trained only in sewing, cooking and homemaking, Bibiji finished both middle school and later Giani (religious) studies. Growing up in her father's home, Bibiji had a grand childhood. As the daughter of an educated and distinguished family, Bibiji had the best things that life had to offer. She was a fun-loving child, full of humour and intelligence. Bibiji grew to become a strong, respected and responsible young woman. Happily married in 1934, she gave birth to her only child, Baljit, two years later. Shortly thereafter, life struck its first blow as her husband, Harchand Singh, died suddenly, leaving her alone to raise her infant daughter. With the help of her maternal family and her faith in God, Bibiji persevered and faced this challenge. The second blow came six years later when Bibiji lost both her brothers within a very short time period. Gone were the remaining males in her immediate family and Bibiji was left to face life's challenges alone with her daughter in a country where being a young widow is difficult in every way. As it always was in crisis, we find the true character of a person, so it was with Bibiji. With great faith she took the grief and pain and transformed it into strong determination and positive will power to overcome her losses and to succeed. She faced life head on in her no-nonsense way, ever ready to do what was required of her. She raised her daughter in Dakha, sent her to boarding school and supported her through Sidhwa Girls College, ensuring that her child received a full education. Bibiji worked hard to give her daughter everything possible in life. During these difficult years she never lost sight of her faith or determination. She gained the love and respect of all of her family, friends and village neighbours. Even with her own pain and difficulties, Bibiji was always there with a helping hand and a caring heart, a sharp wit and wisdom, ever ready to help wherever she could. She was a source of light to those who knew her. In 1956, Bibiji celebrated the marriage of her daughter to Sardar Inderjit Singh Claire and thus began the next chapter in her life. When her grandchildren arrived, Bibiji continued her devotion to her daughter's family. In 1964, the family moved to Scotland.When Bibiji joined us in 1966 with her youngest granddaughter her family and neighbours in Dakha wept at their great loss. In 1969, the family moved to Canada. For the next twenty years we all lived in Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan. In 1989, Bibiji along with her daughter and her son-in-law settled in Winnipeg. These last 35 years of life in Canada, Bibiji devoted to her family. She took care of all of us never thinking of herself. Our family will never forget all the love and care she gave us. Our memories are forever branded with images of our beloved Naniji, our Bibiji. Her hands always full... holding us, cooking for us, gardening and pulling weeds, watering the vegetables, sewing, baking, washing and putting clothes on the line, picking flowers in the fields, praying everyday, making prashad on Sundays, giving us hugs and wiping our tears. She was a great storyteller as well and her bedtime stories about life in Punjab, acting out all the characters, would make us laugh so much our stomachs would hurt. Bibiji you were a wonderful mother and grandmother and a great and spirited person. You touched us to the very core of our beings. You modelled us and made us better for having had you in our life. You taught us about love, faith, dignity, strength, pride and humility. You showed us how to have fun and laugh; you put faith before superstition, reason before anger and character before desire. Wherever we go and whatever we do Bibiji, you will be with us in our minds, our bodies and our spirits. The Claire family would like to express our deepest gratitude to the nurses, staff and doctors at both the Health Sciences Centre (4th Floor) and the Seven Oaks General Hospital (5th Floor - Units 4 and 1) for your care and compassion in making Bibiji's last few weeks as comfortable as you did. LENA LUCAS (nee WERBICKI) Peacefully on Friday, July 2, 2004 at the Riverview Health Centre with her family at her side, Lena lost her battle with cancer. Lena leaves to cherish her memory, and she will be sadly missed by her son, Jim; daughter-in-law Jackie; grandchildren, Cory, Ryan and Cindy; loving niece Dolores Tesluk and many nieces and nephews. Lena also leaves behind two loving brothers, Joe (Sophie) Werbicki, Walter (Victoria) Werbicki and sister Mary Kushner. She was predeceased by her loving husband James; parents, Andrew and Anna Werbicki; brother Michael Werbicki; sisters, Evelyn Klym, Stella Krapko and Olga Kuzik. Our dear Lena was always there for anyone who needed help. She spent many years as caregiver for her late sister Olga, as well as the numerous residents of the German Society Manor, where she resided for many years. Lena was a lifetime and faithful member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, as well as the Apostleship of Prayer and attended St. Nicholas School. Lena's delicious holupchi and perogies will be missed by everyone. Prayers will be sung, with Divine Liturgy to follow on Tuesday, July 6 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 737 Bannerman Ave. and Arlington Street. Rev. Fr. ELSIE LYSY (nee STECH) Peacefully, on Thursday, July 1, 2004, Elsie Lysy passed away at Holy Family Nursing Home into the loving arms of the Lord after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Peter in 1984; her mother Catherine Stech (nee Zajac) 1956; her father John Stech 1978; her sisters and brothers, Rosie Stadnyk 1946, Mike Stech 1975, Sam Stech 1989 and Helen Ewanyshyn 2001. Elsie leaves to celebrate her memory her only son, Joseph (Helen) with stepsons, Peter, Kelly and Matthew; her niece Sylvia Todaschuk (Ernest); grand nieces, Rosemarie and Charlene Todaschuk (Andrij Czerny); great grand nephew Peter Czerny and great grand niece Tatiana Czerny of Montreal; her sisters and brothers, Annie Shwaluke, Stella Yaskiw, Joe Stech, all of Shoal Lake, MB and Bill (Stella) Stech of Windsor, ON; sister-in-law Rosie Stech of Shoal Lake, MB, many nieces, nephews and numerous friends. Elsie was born
in Rossburn Municipality, Vista District, MB on October 24, 1919 where her parents farmed and were parishioners of the Ukrainian Catholic Rossburn Farms Church. Then, in 1928, her parents and siblings moved to Birtle Municipality, Kelloe District, farming there until moving to Shoal Lake in 1944. Around 1950, Elsie moved to Winnipeg, MB where she met Peter who immigrated to Canada from Darachiw, Ukraine. They married July 12, 1952 in Shoal Lake at St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Church. They were blessed with one son, Joseph. Elsie was very devoted to her Catholic faith, the Church and community. They were members of Christ The King Ukrainian Catholic Church and then Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church. They were also members of Ukrainian Canadian Institute Prosvita. Elsie was a very active member of the Church Senior Club. She was actively involved in the Ladies Auxiliary and well known for her work in the kitchen for numerous functions at the church. If you couldn't find her at home, she was probably making pyrohy and holubtsi in the church auditorium. Elsie also enjoyed making pyrohy at home for her family and friends. Her holubtsi and perizhky were very tasty, and she made the best tisto for noodle soup. Some family members are fortunate enough to have learned her magical ingredients for her delicious dill pickles as well. For over 20 years, Elsie was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at Holy Family Nursing Home, her final resting place, and was a devoted volunteer with the patients, with pyrohy making, teas, fundraisers and various other activities. Elsie was very proud and honoured to volunteer for Winnipeg's Folklorama, Ukrainian New Year's Levees at the Manitoba Legislature and to attend and support many fundraisers throughout the city. During the International Year of Volunteers (2001), Elsie was recognized by the Honourable Dr. Rey Pagtakhan, P.C., M.P. for her outstanding service and contribution as a volunteer in the community. On June 2, 1999, the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League of Canada awarded a Certificate of Merit to Elsie for her long service and dedication to the organization. On June 15, 1994, His Grace Most Reverend Michael Bzdel, C.Cs.R., Metropolitan for Ukrainian Catholics graciously bestowed the implored Apostolic Blessings on Elsie Lysy in acknowledgement of her services to the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League of Canada on the occasion of its 50th Anniversary. Elsie enjoyed the company of her dog Rebel for many years and was fond of gardening. She delighted in sharing the fruits of her harvest with family and friends. Elsie also enjoyed spending time at the beach. Whether it was with her husband in Hawaii and Barbados or with family and friends at Ukrainian Park, Balsam Bay and Grand Beach, she loved the sun, sand and water! Elsie will be remembered as a devoted, caring, loving and hard-working person who put family and friends first. She will be deeply missed by those who knew her and loved her. The family is grateful to the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate and clergy and all the nurses and staff at Holy Family Nursing Home, especially in St. Paul's ward, for their compassionate care as well as the nursing staff at Oakview Place and St. Boniface Hospital. A special thank you is extended to Sister Zoe and Dr. Gorski. PETER LYTWYN August 22, 1911 - July 2, 2004 Peter Lytwyn born, August 22, 1911 in Ukraine, died July 2, 2004 at River East Personal Care Home, at the age of 92. Peter is survived by his wife Rose; daughters, Adeline Armstrong (Glen) and Shirley Bomak; grandson Bobby Bomak (Stacey); granddaughter Connie Gale (Darren), and great-granddaughter Madison Gale. He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers John and Nick, and his son-in-law Bob Bomak. Peter was born
in the Ukraine and emigrated to Canada in 1929 where he worked on his brother John's farm till he came to Winnipeg and worked at Oglivie Flour Mills until his retirement in 1976. Dad loved to garden and his yard. Dad was stricken with Parkinson's and he was no longer able to get around on his own. Dad spent the last four years at the River East Personal Care Home. Dad fought a brave fight and seldom complained. Our thanks to the staff at River East for their kindness and compassion for Peter. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 6, 2004 at Klassen Funeral Chapel, 1897 Henderson Hwy. with a reception to follow. JOHN DOUGLAS MacFARLANE 1920 - 2004 On June 28, 2004 Douglas MacFarlane passed quietly away at the age of 83 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy; son Keith (Nila); daughter Audrey Owens (Thompson); and grandchildren, Laurel and Graham MacFarlane and Kyle and Neil Owens. Doug was predeceased by his son Lorne in 1959. Douglas faced life's challenges with unwavering integrity, humility, and quiet courage. He was an intensely rational man who enjoyed treating experiences as complex puzzles whether it be a Saturday crossword or a financial prospectus. Doug was assiduous in matters of finance, but generous in spirit. In December 2002 Doug and Dorothy took all three generations of the family to Hawaii, including Nila's mother Bernice Dennis. Doug was a man of simple pleasures: serving on church committees, curling, playing bridge, searching for blueberries in the woods by his cottage, and travelling. He and Dorothy saw much of the world in the years after his retirement. Doug's life was fulfilled by Dorothy. They were companions in life and love. It was because of Dorothy's unselfish and sustained care that Doug was able to enjoy quality of life in his last few years. Soft spoken and mild mannered, Doug was a man of uncommon courage. During the war he was wounded while a gun position officer in the Royal Canadian Artillery 2nd Division. Later, as a forward observation officer, he received the military Cross for courage under fire. In peacetime he became a Chemistry teacher, and later principal of Sisler High School before retiring in 1979. Doug was a magnificent grandfather to Laurel, Graham, Kyle, and Neil. Doug and Dorothy took all four of them to Normandy for the 50th anniversary of the D-Day invasion in 1994. Doug took interest in their activities, pride in their achievements, and often expressed wondrous awe at each of their talents. Above all else, Doug was a good man. His life will provide happy memories and inspiration for his family in the years ahead. A service celebrating Doug's life will be held at Churchill Park United Church, 525 Beresford Ave. on Wednesday, July 7, at 2:00 p.m. Flowers are gratefully declined. NELLIE MILLER September 3, 1914 - June 28, 2004 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother on Monday, June 28, 2004 at the Grace Hospital, beloved wife of the late Ludvic Miller. She was predeceased by her husband, Ludvic in 1993; brothers, Peter and Johnny Patrick and sisters, Jessie Skolny and Jean Flatt. Left to cherish her memory is daughter Dorothy, husband Harvey Koch; son Edward and June of Sandy Hook; five grandchildren, Colin and Darryl Koch, Janice (Barry) Watt of Calgary, Glenn (Theresa) Miller of Oakbank, Douglas (Pamela) Miller of Dauphin; eight great-grandchildren, Brandon and Spencer Koch, Patrick and Andrew Watt, Emily and Kristina Miller, Brody and Benjamin Miller and many nieces and nephews. Mom was born
and raised in the R.M. of Springfield. In 1935, she married Ludvic and moved to Winnipeg. In 1954, Mom and Dad moved to their home on St. John's Avenue, where she lived until she went into Oakview Nursing Home in March 2001. Mom loved to play bingo. Her hobbies were knitting and making beautiful pettipoint pictures, which she proudly displayed throughout her home. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the nursing staff on the third floor of Oakview Nursing Home for their loving and tender care. At Mom's request, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 8 at 11:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. with Pastor Rod Buck officiating.
