DIANE FEDORCHUK (nee JOHNSON) After a courageous battle with cancer, Diane (Dee Dee) passed away on Sunday, June 15, 2003 at the St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 56. She is survived by her son Lee and granddaughter Brooke; brothers, Romeo, George, Jim, Willie; her mother Elizabeth, and her partner John. She was predeceased by her sister Denise and her Dad Willay in 2001. Cremation has taken place and her remains will be taken back to her beloved Thunder Bay for a service at a later date.

Jacob Froese
JACOB (JM) FROESE Mr. Jacob (JM) Froese of Winkler, MB passed away at his home on Saturday, June 14, 2003 at the age of 85 years. Mr. Froese was the Member of the Manitoba Legislature for the Constituency of Rhineland from 1958 to 1973. While representing the Social Credit Party of Manitoba as its only member, it didn't stop Mr. Froese from influencing votes and decisions with his relentless research without assistants, and principled stands. He also served the Credit Union movement in Manitoba, nationally and internationally, from 1950 to 1973, 23 years without fail. Education was a high priority for Mr. Froese chairing the local school board for 25 years, serving on the Manitoba School Trustee Association, 15 years as vice-chairman. He spent countless hours serving as a director on M.C.C. Canada, Eden Mental Health Centre, and Salem Personal Care Home in Winkler. He lived out his life long motto, "To serve and to be of service" without expecting or receiving anything in return. He is survived by his wife Mary (nee Peters), seven daughters, three sons, and their families. The funeral service will be held at the Winkler Mennonite Brethren Church on Thursday, June 19 at 3:00 p.m. A longer obituary to follow tomorrow. ERKKI FELIKS IKONEN With great sadness, we announce the passing of our father, grandfather (ukki) and husband after a courageous four year battle with myelodysplasia. Erkki passed away peacefully at the Deer Lodge Centre on June 14, 2003 with his family at his side. Family was first and foremost to Erkki and he leaves to mourn his passing his loving wife Hilkka; son Johnny (Sharon), grandchildren, Shauna (Mark) and Carson; daughter Liisa (Spencer), grandchildren, Merritt of Winnipeg and from Los Angeles Raina (Ryan) and Maija (Chris); daughter Tuula (Guy) of Vancouver, grandchildren, Tyson and Dana; and numerous nieces and nephews in Finland and Sweden. in Helsinki, Finland, on February 27, 1917. Entrepreneur, designer, inventor, metal machinist, carpenter, mechanic, master craftsman - Erkki was a man of numerous talents with an unassuming nature. Erkki's first business was designing and building aerial photography equipment in Helsinki. With family, he immigrated to Canada in 1953 settling first in Saskatoon, SK, before moving to Winnipeg. Here, in 1959, he began another business, General Gas Burners Co. on Princes St., manufacturing commercial gas conversion burners. Later he worked for Luke's Electric as a machinist and purchaser of lathes. While employed with Luke's, he also found the time to build saunas both commercial and residential, professional go-karts, as well as agricultural scientific equipment for Agriculture Canada and around the world. He designed automatic seeding machines for plant germination, stainless steel oat dehullers, micro presses for cytological preparations and barley malting machines. These inventions were published in the following journals: Crop Science 1977 and Plant Disease 1984. Sports were also of great interest to Erkki. He was a ski jumper, skier, long distance swimmer and first prize ballroom dancer. In Finland, Erkki built and raced speed boats. He also had a love of music and a keen sense of humour which remained with him even through sickness. With Hilkka, he enjoyed many trips to Finland, Florida and Mexico. Erkki's skillfully-crafted cottage (our cottage as he often reminded us) at Beaconia Beach provided many fun-filled holidays for all family members. A special thank you to Dr. Maxwell, Bonnie and Chris of the Oncology Unit at Victoria Hospital for their years of assistance, Unit 5A and 5E of the St. Boniface Hospital and South 2 of the Deer Lodge Centre for their compassionate care. A service celebrating Erkki's life will be held on Thursday, June 19 at 2:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Ave., Aubrey Street entrance. EBERHARD KAMPFF Eberhard Erich Kampff passed away on Saturday morning, June 14, 2003, at the age of 70 years, after being in declining health for the last several years. He is survived by his beloved Waltraud, who has been his rock and his shelter through the last challenging years. He is also survived by his children, Gudrun, her husband Gino Ceccarelli and their children, Vincent and Laura (nee Wiens); Mark, his wife Laura and their children, Paul, Brandon, Paige and Erick; Margaret, her husband Jim Woodman and their children, Anna and Frances; and Ingrid. Surviving him as well are his two sisters, Gisela and Ilse; and members of his extended family, in Germany; other close family members and friends, especially Waltraud's brothers and sisters and their families. Eberhard was born
in Platteinen, East Prussia (now Poland) on Sunday, July 17, 1932, to Johannes and Margarete (Goertz) Kampff. The youngest of the family, he was a brother to Dora (d.), Siegfried (d.), Ingeborg (d.), Hansgeorg (d.), Ilse, Gisela and Waltraud (d.). Eberhard immigrated to Canada in February of 1956 at the age of 24. He spent about ten years working at the Happy Vineyard, first as a potato peeler, then as a cook and lastly as a waiter. His time there always remained a source of pride and pleasure in his memory - it was a significant time in his life. He married Waltraud Lehmann in October of 1958, and moved to Grunthal in the winter of 1966 to fulfil his lifelong dream to own his own dairy farm. With the help of his family, "2+4 Dairy" grew into a successful operation. In 1990, he and Waltraud retired to Pansy. It was there that Eberhard spent many quiet hours on the deck of their cozy country home, which overlooked the Joubert Creek. Dad really enjoyed his family, music, political discussions, beer, listening to the radio, especially shortwave and keeping up on current events. In his younger years, he loved going to the beach, and is said to have done a mean Tango. Eberhard chose cremation, and requested he be returned to the land he so loved and respected. Our family wishes to express their sincere gratitude for the support and tender care received by the folks at the Stroke Recovery Association, Charleswood Adult Day Club, the Alzheimer Society, Tuxedo Villa, and a special lady, Lisa. Sally Knox
SALLY MARIE KNOX On June 14, 2003 at St. Boniface Hospital, Sally, wife of Keith Knox, mother of Allison and Douglas Guest, David Knox and James Knox and grandmother of two precious grandchildren, Sarah Marie and John David Guest. She is also survived by her brother Marshall Wansbrough, his wife Jane and niece Gillian, and by many supportive cousins in Canada and the United States. Sally was born
in Toronto on April 6, 1936 to Frederick and Elizabeth Wansbrough and spent her early years in Windsor, ON. During the war when her father was overseas, the family went to live with her maternal grandfather in Boulder, CO, where Sally grew to love the mountains. In 1948 the family moved to Winnipeg. Sally obtained her Arts degree from the University of Manitoba in 1957, a Bachelor of Pedagogy in 1958 and a Bachelor of Education in 1961. She began teaching at Silver Heights Collegiate in 1958, the year she and Keith were married. From 1962 to 1972 she became a "stay at home" mom, returning to teaching in 1972 at Golden Gate Junior High and subsequently at St. Mary's Academy. In 1976 she began teaching fitness classes for Winnipeg and St. James Departments of Recreation, which she continued to do until 1985. For a number of years Sally enjoyed being a volunteer interpreter in the school programs of the Manitoba Museum of Man and Nature, where she felt she grew in appreciation of our wonderful part of the world. She also volunteered in the E.S.L. program of Winnipeg School Division and delivering Meals on Wheels. Sally served her church in a number of capacities over the years, as a teacher and superintendent of the Sunday School, as a member of the vestry, as a member and president of the Altar Guild, as a member of St. Aidan's Quilters and latterly as a lay reader. Sally loved the outdoors; walking, hiking in the mountains, trekking in Nepal, looking for wildflowers around Churchill, camping in the Australian Outback, playing golf and tennis, cross-country skiing, gardening, bird-watching, just being at the Victoria Beach cottage. For this reason, should friends desire, instead of flowers, donations in her memory to the Manitoba Museum of Man and Nature, 190 Rupert St., R3B 0M8, or the Fort Whyte Centre, 1961 McCreary Rd., R3P 2K9, would be appreciated. Sally and her family wanted all her friends to know how much she appreciated their prayers and other support over the past five years and their companionship in the years prior to that. The family and Sally also wanted to thank those at Home Care and all those in the Oncology and Palliative Care Departments at St. Boniface General Hospital for their compassionate care over the years of her illness. "God of Pilgrims teach us to recognize your dwelling place in the love, generosity and support of those with whom we share our journey, and help us to worship you in our response to those who need our care; for all the world is your temple and every human heart is a sign of your presence, made known to us through Jesus Christ our Lord. ALEXANDER KUNCEWICZ At the age of 81, peacefully, after a brief illness, Alex passed away in his sleep on Sunday, June 15, 2003 at the Deer Lodge Hospital. Alex was born
in Poland on May 7, 1922. He served in the Polish Army before immigrating to Canada in 1950. Alex married his beautiful wife Susanne, of 47 years, on April 7, 1956. He was predeceased by his parents Alexsander and Olga Kuncewicz of Poland. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife Susanne; his son and daughter-in-law Ron and Phyllis and their children, Ashleigh, Nicholas, and Chelsea; his daughter Alexandera Stonoga and her husband David and their children, Graeme and Reid of Whiterock, BC and numerous relatives in Poland. Alex worked at the C.P.R. for 39 years until his retirement. He loved his family dearly. His most precious pastimes were relaxing at his cabin at Hillside Beach and visiting with his friends at Legion #246. A private family service will be held. IRENE MARGARET LEAR (nee WILLIAMS) Suddenly and peacefully on June 13, 2003 at approximately 1:30 in the afternoon Irene passed away at the Riverview Health Centre. January 19, 1909 to Herbert Edward Williams and Miriam May Gunstone. They emigrated from Whitechurch, England in 1906. Irene's individuality surfaced early. She was one of twins, but unfortunately her twin died at birth. Irene was predeceased by her three brothers, Harold Llewellyn Williams, her oldest brother, Beresford (Barry) Williams, the second oldest brother, and Charles Montague Williams, her youngest brother. A young woman at 14, her parents, May and Herbert separated with Herbert remaining in Winnipeg employed as a Stage Manager at the Walker Theatre. Irene and her mother May returned to England where May worked for her grandfather as his housekeeper. Irene's work ethic was developed during 7 years as an apprentice working in a pottery factory in Bristol, England. Irene returned to Canada at 21, financed by a Winnipeg writing competition, the prize being a trip back to her birthplace. Irene worked as a waitress in Toronto on her return to Canada. A short time later her mother and three brothers returned to Winnipeg. Her mother being employed as a milliner to support the family. Seven years later she met and married Walter Henry Lear in 1936. Walter and Irene resided in Winnipeg and St. Vital all their lives. Walter worked for the CNR Express for 45 years until his retirement. Irene worked in Winnipeg as a stenographer and clerk for various companies in the Winnipeg area up to her retirement. She had a passion for travelling and visited Australia, China, Russia, and Scandinavia. She leaves to mourn one son Clifford Walter Lear (Myrtle); two granddaughters, Kelly (Rudy) of Vancouver and Darcy (Kelly) of Fort St. John; three grandsons, Trevor (Jenny) of Thompson, Robin (Theresa) of Vancouver, and Jeff of Dundas. Irene also leaves to mourn many nieces and nephews. Irene had survived many friends, and was a devoted wife to Walter, whom she cared for during his battle with Alzheimer disease until he passed away in 1996. Wally was truly a very fine English gentleman. Irene played in the Harmonica band with Creative Retirement for 12 years along with her husband and they will be playing their own tunes, after having been reunited elsewhere. Her final reflection was that she had done the best she could, always under varying circumstances. She lived a challenging life and always rose to the challenge personally, privately, and professionally. She was admired by many. Anybody who met Irene, knew she was quite a character, who remained vibrant, alert and very opinionated...which was part of her charm. Irene was a woman ahead of her time, independent, savvy and smart. However, not a "typical" grandmother and mother in some ways. She was very funny, witty and entertaining. Luckily, this has rubbed off on her son and grandchildren. The Lear wit shall continue. Thanks to the nurses, nurses aids, and staff at Riverview Health Centre. You know who you are on ward CD2 without mentioning individual names. Memorial service, 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18 at Regents Park United Church, 613 St. Mary's Rd. (at St. Anne's). BRIAN MARTIN On Father's Day, June 15, 2003 Brian Martin (Marty), husband, dad and papa, passed away suddenly and peacefully with his family by his side. He is survived by his loving wife Carole; son Brian (Jackie); daughter Kristina and the apple of his eye, granddaughter Abigail. Dad also leaves behind two sisters, Lorraine (Tom) Muirhead; Myrtle (Bob) Downie; brother-in-law, Dave (Angela) VanTornhout and their families. As well as numerous friends and his special lifelong friend Lloyd Wachal. Dad had been a trucker since his late teens when he started working for the City of Winnipeg and later the Municipality of East St. Paul until his retirement a few years ago. Dad could always be found working on his truck in the backyard. Dad also loved hockey, spending countless hours watching Brian at his games and most recently, watching the N.H.L. playoffs. He enjoyed playing hockey himself as a young man and later with the East St. Paul old timers team. Dad was a kind and generous man. He had a terrific sense of humour and a dry wit that will be missed at family get-togethers. Dad also had a wonderful gift of talking with complete strangers he met anywhere, making you think they had been friends for years. Dad loved animals and was instrumental at helping to find homes for many homeless animals. But his absence will be especially missed by his best friend and companion, Kacey. We will miss you terribly Dad. Your physical presence will be sadly missed but your love and spirit will be with us forever. A special thank you to Aunty Angie and Uncle Dave for your continuing love and support and to everyone who showed our Dad kindness and compassion on his last day. DON McGILVRAY June 22, 1925 - June 15, 2003 Don McGilvray passed away on June 15, 2003 at the Victoria General Hospital. Don was predeceased by his mother and father and his three brothers, Norman, Andrew and Alec. Don leaves to cherish his beloved wife of 52 years, Wilma; his two sons, William, Robert (Laura Penner); his four grandchildren, Lisa, Colby, Alex and Taylor, as well as numerous friends, family, nieces and nephews. ANNE MAY PASSEY Peacefully at the Grace Hospital on June 10, 2003 Anne May Passey in her 87th year. She will be sadly missed by her beloved husband of 63 years James; her son Brian and daughter-in-law Annette (of Ottawa); grandchildren, Graham (San Francisco), Craig (Phoenix), Karen (Los Angeles); and her sister Margaret (Waylett) of Winnipeg. Anne was born
August 23, 1915 at Shoal Lake, the daughter of John and Ethel Lamont and was one of five sisters, Marion (Stratton), Louise (Martin), Evelyn (Stewart), Margaret (Waylett); and one brother Hector (Lamont). All of who have predeceased Anne with the exception of Margaret. The Lamont family moved to Winnipeg from Shoal Lake in the spring of 1919 where Anne resided until marrying James in 1940 and moving to the RCAF base in Trenton, ON. Over the next 23 years Anne and James moved numerous times with the RCAF residing in Ottawa, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Zweibrucken Germany, Marville and Metz France. Upon James retirement from the RCAF in 1963 they settled down in Winnipeg where they have resided for the past 40 years. While Anne worked briefly before her marriage she remained at home as a caring and loving wife and mother for James and Brian from 1940. At Anne's request cremation has taken place and a memorial service was held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home on Friday, June 13. In lieu of flowers, if family and friends desire, donations may be made in Anne's name to the Grace General Hospice Fund.
