SUZANNE G. LAFRENIERE (nee COUTURE) Suddenly on November 16, 2002, Suzanne passed away at the age of 73 years. She is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Jean B. (John) LaFreniere; four children, Gisele and Jaro Drexler, George and Nicole LaFreniere, Leo LaFreniere and Shelly Wiebe, Roland and Corinne LaFreniere; 11 grandchildren; siblings, Germaine LaFleur, Evariste Couture (Angele), and Rita Ryckenboer (Al); a very dear friend Ruby; brothers and sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents, eight brothers and sisters. Suzanne was loved and respected by her family and many friends who will miss her dearly. Prayers will be said on Wednesday, November 20, at 7:00 p.m. at l'eglise du Precieux Sang, 200, rue Kenny. Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated on Thursday, November 21, at 10:30 a.m. also at l'eglise du Precieux Sang with l'abbe Marcel Chaput et Pere Albert LaFreniere O.M.I. officiating. FREDERICK JOHN JAMES LANG It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father Frederick John James Lang, at the Grace Hospital on November 15, 2002. He was predeceased by his wife Laura Lang and his grandson Ronnie Sigouin. Fred is survived by four children, Frederick (Joyce) Lang of Victoria, BC, Kathleen (Sam) Zaik of Winnipeg, Audrey Sigouin of Winnipeg, and Jean (Allan) Glougie of Nanaimo, BC; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister Kathleen Thorsteinson; and his niece Joyce Gray. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Fred prided himself on living independently for as long as he was able. Fred enjoyed deep discussions on history and current affairs of the world. Many of these discussions were held with the gang in the lobby at the Eastern Star, where he resided until January of 2002, when ill health forced him to move to Tuxedo Villa. Viewing will be held at 1:30 p.m. and funeral service will take place at 2:00 p.m. at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 637 Buckingham Rd., on Thursday, November 21. PAMELA LEW (nee LAI PENG CHAN) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Pamela Lew on Friday, November 15, 2002 at the age of 57 years. She will be deeply missed by her husband Paul; daughter Brenda (Ingmar); son Darryl; mother Lao Kuai Ng; sister-in-law Lun Yun Chin; nephews, Sammy (Tammy and Laura), Albert (Samantha), James; brothers, Si Chan (Chun Ling and Irene) and Soi Chan. She also leaves much family in Macau, Hong Kong and Burma, including her mother-in-law, two sisters, a brother-in-law and their families. Pam was born
in Rangoon, Burma, third eldest of eight children. She married Paul in 1971 and immigrated to Canada in the same year. They started a family and had two children, and also raised three nephews. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Pam was a fashion design enthusiast and a skilled sewer. She made clothes for the entire family. Pam worked for Perth's, Sears, Modern Headwear, Durapack, Visions Draperies, Creative Windows and Interior Touch. She enjoyed and took great pride in her work. A special thank you goes to all the staff of 3E at Riverview for the kindness and compassion that was extended to both Pam and her family. Thank you goes to homecare for allowing Pam to spend most of her last months at home. The family would also like to thank the staff of the fifth floor of Women's Hospital and at CancerCare Manitoba. LESLIE (LES) LOEWEN passed away on Sunday, November 17, 2002 at St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care Unit, aged 68. He is survived by his wife Margaret (nee Derksen), son Gord, grandchildren, Nicholas, Brenden, and Madison; and their mother Saneeta; three sisters, six brothers, one foster sister, and two sisters-in-law, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Les was predeceased by his parents, two brothers and one brother-in-law. Employed as a proofreader with Sanford Evans for 26 years, until 1991. He volunteered with C.N.I.B. and Deer Lodge Centre. He was a member of Manitoba Christian Writers Association and had several of his articles published. Les was devoted to his Saviour, family and church (St. James Gospel Chapel). Singing was very important to him - his deep low bass was always enjoyed and appreciated in quartets and congregational singing. Funeral service will be Friday, November 22 at 10:30 a.m. at Westwood Community Church, 401 Westwood Dr., Winnipeg. Interment at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. in Ukraine and came to Canada in 1950. He was a fur dresser by trade, employed at D. Cohn/Trans-Canada for 25 years. Mike was a past member of Institute Prosvita where he spent many hours volunteering his time at Friday night bingo. He enjoyed fishing with his family and close buddies and spent many hours of his retired life puttering around his house and yard. Stanley Mickall
STANLEY THOMAS MICKALL Peacefully on Friday, November 15, 2002, at the Grace General Hospital, Stanley Mickall passed away at the age of 87 years. Stanley was predeceased by his parents, John and Annie; and his sister Jean. Stanley is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years Kathryn; his two daughters, Diana Whiting (Richard) of Toronto and Jo-Anne Mickall; grandsons, Jason, Jared and Scott; granddaughter Morgan; his sister Kathleen; and brother William. Dad was born
in Winnipeg and moved with his family to Sidney, MB and later to Carberry, MB. He served in the Naval Branch of the Canadian Armed Forces during the Second World War, and upon discharge, he entered the trade field of plumbing. He worked for different companies and lastly as a troubleshooter for the federal government on many Northern Manitoba communities. Upon retirement, Dad continued to do the things he loved best, gardening, the summer cottage at Betula Lake for the last 45 years, seeing his grandchildren grow up and travelling on winter holidays with Kathryn. SAMUEL THOMAS RHYNARD September 05, 1911 - November 15, 2002 As peacefully and quietly as he lived, Dad passed away at his home in Ferndale on November 15, 2002, at the age of 91 years. Predeceased by his wife Jean, in 1995 and an infant daughter Debra in 1960, he is survived by his four loving daughters and their husbands, Shirley and Herman Troster of Ferndale, Elaine and Dave Fisher of Petawawa, ON, Jude and Vick Dusik of Calgary and Sandi and Roydon Rodgers of Domain; and his grandchildren, Darcy (Murray), Paul (Debbie) Julie, Jeff (Marcy), Leanne, Chris, Trevor, Evan, Derek and Greg; and great-grandson Griffin. Also surviving, two sisters, Mary Hampson of Winnipeg and Gladys Mellow of Sanford. Born in Ferndale on September 05, 1911, Dad spent his entire life in the Ferndale and Starbuck areas, farming and enjoying his community of friends and neighbours. His faith, his friends and his black lab, Fly were of utmost importance throughout his life. MARION RUSSELL (nee BOOTH) On Wednesday, November 13, 2002 at Oakview Personal Care Home, Marion Hazel Russell, most precious and dearly loved wife of John S. Russell. Born on June 7, 1924, in Winnipeg, the only daughter of Charles Henry Booth and Violet Mildred (Whitley) Booth, Mrs. Russell was a lifelong resident of Winnipeg. She was educated at Riverbend School for Girls (now Balmoral Hall), the University of Manitoba (Bachelor of Arts), and the University of Toronto (Bachelor of Library Science). Prior to her marriage she was a Reference Librarian at the University of Manitoba and later at St. James-Assiniboia Public Library. Mrs. Russell was active for a number of years at the University Women's Club and was a devoted member of St. John's Cathedral (Anglican) for 25 years serving on the Chancel Guild, in the Anglican Church Women, on many committees and as a regular reader at the Services of the Church. Of recent years, until prevented by ill health, she attended St. Luke's Parish. Marion will be remembered by all who knew her for her elegance, gracious manner and kindly ways, but especially for her service to others unstintingly given. Ever patient under difficulties, she waged her long struggle with Alzheimer's disease to the end with courage and fortitude never losing the pleasant smile she had for everyone. She is survived by her loving and sorrowing husband Jack; and by her brother Glenn (Phyllis) of Edmonton; sisters-in-law, Mrs. John R. Morton (Dolores) of Winnipeg, and Mrs. G. Harold Sharp (Mary) of Montreal; brothers-in-law, Ronald (Carol) and Gerald (Mary Ann) Russell of Winnipeg; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins; and by many close and dear friends who were so supportive and helpful throughout her illness. Thanks is also expressed to the staff of the second floor of Oakview Place who were always so kind and caring of Marion. SHEILA SHAW Peacefully at the Riverview Health Centre, Sheila passed away at the age of 74. Predeceased by her husband, Clifton (1984), Sheila will be sadly missed by her sister Claire Hutchinson; her children, Mike (Theresa) Shaw of Scottsdale, AZ; Deb (Ron) Jantzen of Abbotsford, BC; Robert (Chris Krawchenko) Shaw; and Clifton Bruce (Miriam Unruh) Shaw of Winnipeg; and by the grandchildren she adored, Erin, David, Zoe, Douglas, Mike (Miranda), Andrew, Benjamin and Liam; and remembered by many nephews, nieces and friends. Sheila was smart, gracious, classy and always had great style. She was a voracious reader, loved a good crossword and had a wicked wit. She liked to travel, to garden and spent many good times at the family cottage at Royal Lake.
