Louis Charles Ernest Jesse
On Friday, February 26, 1999, Louis Charles Ernest Jesse, late of Pangman, SK passed away at the age of 88 years. Predeceased by his father Charles Albert Edward and mother Nora Kathleen; sister Winnifred Muriel; and brother Harold George. He leaves to mourn his loving wife of 56 years, Edith of Pangman; three sons: Charles (Myra) Jesse of Pangman and her children: Kelly (Lynn), and Aeron (Tracy); George (Barb) Jesse of Drinkwater, SK. and their children: Twyla and Jinnel; Lloyd (Donna) Jesse of Medicine Hat, AB, and their children: Christopher, Angela and Andrea; brother-in-law Oscar (Runey) Mangel of Ashern, MB; sisters-in-law: Hilda (Jim) Clark of Moosehorn, MB; Frieda Clark of Grahamdale, MB; and Irma Miller of Caledonia, ON; and many nieces and nephews. Louis Jesse was born in Southampton, England on September 1, 1910. He emigrated to Canada with his parents and brother on March 13, 1914. He helped his father on the farm where they homesteaded near Amulet. He walked to town to attend Amulet school with classmates Joe and Francis Bond. He dreyed coal and water to the local schools and businesses in the community. Louis continued these jobs from 1930 to 1954 and often relayed tales of unloading a rail car for two days before delivering it. Louis married Edith Mangel on April 30, 1943 at Winnipeg. They lived in the local agriculture community of Amulet while taking up residence in three separate farm sites at different times of his life. Louis was on many community boards; Sask. Agriculture, secretary of the Sheep Association for Khedive, Amulet Wheat Pool secretary for 14 years and secretary of the Amulet Co-op from 1940-1963. He maintained positions on the Ogema telephone Board and Weyburn Home Care Board for five years. He held a membership on the Anglican Church Vestry and Peoples Warden. He had strong important values and high morals, which he carried with him until his death. Louis was totally dedicated to nature, animals and farming. He also had a very strong commitment to his family. He loved gardening and worked the soil at every opportunity. He enjoyed celebrating family functions, including celebrating their 35th and 50th wedding anniversaries. Funeral service was held Wednesday, March 3 at 3:00 p.m. from Ogema United Church with Rev. Tom Collings officiating. Interment followed in Amulet Cemetery, Amulet, SK. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers. The active pallbearers were: Keith Warren, Tom Webb, George Murray, Albert Webb, Michel Madigan, and Parry Johnson. Carl Reinhold Dechant
On Friday, February 26, 1999 Carl Reinhold Dechant, late of Weyburn, passed away at the age of 72 years. Predeceased by his father and mother, Reinhold and Hilda Dechant; one brother, Walter and one sister-in-law, Polly Dechant. Carl is survived by his brothers and sister: Arthur Dechant, Ralph Dechant, Ernest Dechant, Clifford Dechant and Grace Dechant, all of Weyburn. Carl was born to Reinhold and Hilda nee Wuttke on November 24, 1926 on the family farm. He was the youngest of the brothers, and was soon followed by sister Grace. He grew up in the Colfax District, attending Diamond School through grade 8, and completing grade 12 at Colfax High School with Mr. Bob Plummer as principal. Carl joined father and brother Art back on the farm, but soon moved to Regina to train under Joe Andrews for the CPR Police Service. He loved this work, but was injured when struck by a car while in the line of duty. Carl worked for the Francis Co-op for many years, and then with Canada Wire and Cable for the last 15 years of his career. Along with the rest of his family, Carl was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church in Francis. He was baptized and confirmed there by Pastor Birr, and worshipped regularly until moving to Weyburn. Carl also belonged to the Royal Canadian Legion, and was active in hockey, curling, baseball and softball. After his knee injury, he took up coaching the girl's softball team, which he enjoyed for many years. Except for the difficulties from his injured knee, Carl was always healthy and strong. This changed about four years ago when his hip broke in a fall. Though he recovered, he was never completely well again and was diagnosed recently with extensive cancer in the bones. He calmly received the news from his doctor of his condition, and made final arrangements with his family members before passing away peacefully later that same evening. A memorial service was held Wednesday, March 3 at 2:00 p.m. from Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, with Pastor Ron Bestvater officiating. Interment at a later date in Regina Memorial Gardens. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion served as an honor guard. Dorothy Muriel Westling
On Thursday, February 25, 1999 Dorothy "Dorie" Muriel Westling, late of Yellow Grass, passed away at the age of 71 years. Predeceased by her parents, Charles and Annabella Blackburn; and two sisters: Jean Blackburn and Phoebe Erickson. Dorothy will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Archie Westling of Weyburn; one son, Terry (Karen) Westling of Yellow Grass; one daughter, Donna (Blair) Johnstone of Yellow Grass; grandchildren
: Jason (Z), Julie (Jason), Shauna, Erin, Curtis and Brady; great grandchildren: Cassie, Brody, Brett, Maggie, Burke and Bayley Alexis; one brother-in-law, Eldon (Verna) Westling of Lethbridge, AB; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dorie was born and raised in the Creelman area, and took all her schooling at Creelman. She lived on the farm with her two sisters, then moved to Regina where she worked as a cook. On October 24, 1946 she married Archie Westling at Creelman. They lived on a farm near Forward, SK then at Brooking, SK and then moved to Yellow Grass in 1959. Dorie was a member of the Legion Ladies Auxiliary and was secretary-treasurer for several years. She belonged to the Yellow Grass United Church and was a member of the Lily Circle. Dorie enjoyed knitting and crocheting, she maintained an immaculate house and yard, and loved her flower garden. She liked playing bingo and cribbage, and enjoyed going to the Golden Harvest Center. She also enjoyed travelling about on her scooter these last two years. She and Archie were married 52 years, and the family had a lovely celebration on their 50th wedding anniversary in 1996. Funeral service was held Tuesday, March 2, at 2:00 p.m. from the Yellow Grass United Church with Rev. Lynda Harrison officiating. Interment followed in Yellow Grass cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Legion and the Legion Ladies Auxiliary. The active pallbearers were: Ken Balzer, Doug Hennie, Barry Johnstone, Grant Palmer, Dale Wallin and Ronald Westling. Russell George Middleton
Russell George Lawrence Middleton, of Souris Valley Extended Care Centre, Weyburn, formerly of Lang, passed away on March 2, 1999 in his 87th year. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Nellie Middleton; sisters: Velma Middleton and Ella Harris; brothers: Bob (Helen) and Harold Middleton. He leaves to mourn his sisters: Irene (Stuart) Carson of Bowmannville, ON and sister-in-law, Ethel Middleton of Regina. He will be lovingly remembered by his niece, Lorraine (Ernest) Elder of Weyburn; nephew, Bob (Valerie) Middleton; niece, Connie Middleton, all of Regina; niece, Carol (Brian) O'Byrne of Prince George, BC; as well as many other nieces and nephews. He lived all his life in the Lang district occupied in the farming industry. In later years, he moved to Weyburn. A memorial service was held Saturday, March 6 at 2:00 p.m. from Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn with Marilyn Anderson Corkum officiating. Cremation with interment to follow at a later date. Elizabeth J. Mirwald
Elizabeth J. Mirwald (Kyle, Betty) passed away February 19, 1999 at London, England, at the age of 77. She was predeceased by her husband Frank Mirwald in March 1998 and her parents Earn (1971) and Minnie (1982) Kyle. Betty will be fondly remembered by her children Albert (Lisa) Mirwald and children Samantha, Amy and Kyle of Cranfield Beds, England, and Noreen (Vaughn) Schneider and children Kurt and Andrea of Portland, Oregon, brother Jack (Eloise) Kyle, Victoria, BC and sister Lois (Lynn) Karst of Estevan and several nieces and nephews. Betty received her schooling at South Weyburn School and Weyburn Collegiate, going on to nurse's training at City Hospital, Saskatoon, graduating in 1944. She nursed at the old Weyburn General Hospital and Regina General before moving to Portland, Oregon in 1950. Betty and Frank were married in 1950 and Betty continued nursing and raising a family until retiring in 1987. Betty will be greatly missed by her family and extended family in Oregon, BC and SK, and by her many friends and co-workers.
David Howard Libin
On Monday, March 8, 1999 David Howard Libin, late of Calgary, AB passed away at the age of 54 years. Predeceased by his father, David "Pat" Libin, and his stepfather, Leonard Stower. David is survived by his mother, Pearl Stower of Weyburn; one brother, Jack Libin of Weyburn; one sister, Judi (Doug) Erickson of Regina; two nieces: Sheila Erickson of Regina and Patti (Duane) Jungwirth of Saskatoon; three great nephews: Morgan, Christopher and Alexander; as well as numerous uncles, aunts, cousins and other relatives. David was born September 7, 1944 at Weyburn. He worked for the Weyburn Review for two years before joining the R.C.A.F. He took his firefighting training from 1962-1965 with the R.C.A.F. He worked in Calgary as a firefighter for several years, and also held various other jobs. A memorial service was held Thursday, March 11 at 2:00 p.m. from Fletcher Funeral Chapel with Pastor Ron Bestvater officiating. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers. Interment will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, for friends so wishing, donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice in his memory. Ingmar Olaf Hofseth
Ingmar Olaf Hofseth, 76 years, passed away peacefully at Weyburn General Hospital. He is survived by his wife Julie of Weyburn, and sons: Garry (Jean), three grandchildren: Corey (Melanie) of Regina, Jeremy, and Cindee of Ceylon; Neil (Donna), five grandchildren: Candace (Ian), Kyle, Andrew, Evan, and Jenna of Sundre, AB; Wade (Phyllis), one grandchild Tyler, of Regina. Born April 10, 1922 on the farm in Beaubier, SK delivered by Dr. Brown. He was an only child to Carl and Esther Hofseth. In 1924, his mother died when Ingmar was 2-1/2 years old. Then, Ingmar left with his grandmother, Selma Anderson, for the States and lived in Souris, North Dakota. In 1935 he came back to live with his dad, Carl Hofseth, at Beaubier. At Beaubier he was involved with farming for 52 years. In 1942 Ingmar was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses and later married in 1948 to Julianna Illes. He drove the bombardier and school bus for some 37 years. His first school bus was a 1953 panel wagon which he had made and painted pink and white. When driving the bombardier Ingmar would perform mercy missions for people and take them to the doctor; he would do night runs to help people. He drove two generations of children and their children. He took an interest in these children. Ingmar's interests: motorcycles such as Indian, Harley Davidson and Honda later on; then automobiles such as Studebakers; John Deere tractors (even painting one red, the dealer purchased it back from him giving him another green John Deere, he again repainted the red one back to green). During the 60's he also did custom combining for neighbours. He was noted for his fondness for ice cream milkshakes. He enjoyed travelling with family and friends for most of his life seeing sites from Alaska to Guatemala, New York to Hawaii. Ingmar was loved by all his family and friends and will be sadly missed. A memorial service was held Tuesday, March 9 at 2:00 p.m. from the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Weyburn, with Mr. Arnold Kozak officiating. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers. Interment will follow at a later date in Beaubier cemetery. Arthur "Art" Lloyd Braaten
On Tuesday, March 2, 1999, Arthur "Art" Lloyd Braaten, late of Weyburn, passed away at the age of 75 years. Predeceased by his parents, Knut and Ella Braaten; brothers: Richard, Elmer, Harry, Fred, Roy, Herbert and Andrew Braaten; and one sister, Alice Rumbold. Art leaves to mourn his wife, Grace Overland Braaten of Weyburn; children: Donald (Lucy) Braaten and their children: Eric, Lana, Caleb of Forget, SK; Colleen (Merv) Mooney and their children: Shawn of Yellow Grass; Jody of Regina; Maureen (Ron) Loos and their children: Cody, Evan of Saskatoon; brothers: Eddy (Anne) Braaten of Margo, SK; Raymond (Mabel) Braaten of Swan River, MB; sisters: Edna Elliot of Saskatoon; and Eileen Evans of Boisie, Idaho; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Art was born March 7, 1923 to parents Knut and Ella, nee Wangen, at the old log house on the homestead at Kuroki, SK in the Margo district where they had settled from South Dakota. He was baptized at Moe Concordia Lutheran Church there. All together Art had nine brothers and three sisters, with Eddy remaining on the family farm. Art completed Grade 8 at the country school, and then worked for SaskPower. He was close friends with the Overlands, and married Grace in 1957 after she had been suddenly widowed and her two young children left fatherless. Don and Colleen received Art as father in every way, and soon another sister, Maureen was born, completing the family. Art and Grace farmed for a few years at Lintlaw, moving into town to operate the restaurant there as well. Art also drove a school bus route and sublet another. In 1968 the family moved to Weyburn where Art worked with Cockshutt Implements and then Canada Wire and Cable until retirement. In preparing for retirement, Art and Grace had moved out to Yellow Grass. Now from their retirement home they produced crafts for all the flea markets and craft shows around: garden markets, bird houses, whirlygigs, farmers fannys, tulips and more - with Art doing the woodwork and Grace the painting. Art was a real people person and loved the visiting at all the sales. They travelled, not only for fishing trips up to Fishing Lake, and to visit relatives in BC, Idaho, and Ontario, as they had done with the children, but also to see Las Vegas, Texas and Mexico. They loved to go out dancing or to coffee with neighbors. About three years ago, Art was diagnosed with cancer of the colon. With surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatments, Art's condition stabilized and he enjoyed a year of reasonable health. During this time, Art and Grace reached their 40th wedding anniversary and celebrated with the reaffirmation of marriage vows and a big gathering of family and friends. When the cancer invaded Art's liver they moved back into Weyburn to be closer to hospital services. But even though Art was very sick, they had the whole family into their new place for Christmas. He stayed home as long as possible, passing away after only 2-1/2 weeks in hospital. Art loved having his family around him, visiting with his friends, learning from people. He was a patient and gentle man with a good sense of humour, who rarely lost his temper and loved to tell a story or play a practical joke. Art was always appreciated for his calm, relaxed ways and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him. Funeral service was held Saturday, March 6, at 11:00 a.m. from Zion Lutheran Church, Weyburn with Pastor Ron Bestvater officiating. Interment followed in Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers. The active pallbearers were Terry Braaten, Ron Kuiper, Stanley Braaten, Jerald Schmidt, Don Gallinger and Steve Sayeau. Ruth Evelyn Hunstad
On Monday, March 8, 1999, Ruth Evelyn Hunstad, late of Weyburn, passed away at the age of 83 years. Predeceased by her parents, Bill and Augusta Waddle; two brothers: Ralph and Jimmy Waddle; one sister Lena Whitteron; adopted parents, Mary and Elling Ellingson; adopted brothers: Joseph and Edwin Ellingson; and two grandsons: Bradley Herlick and Allan Thompson. Ruth leaves to mourn her husband of 62 years, Leroy Hunstad of Weyburn; her children: Lionel (Karen) Hunstad of Lake Alma, and their children: Curtis (Cathy) Hunstad, Wendy (Lorne) Ereth, Lynn (Brennan) Zackrisson, Coreen (Jason) Uytterhagen and 11 great grandchildren; Jean (Al) Thompson of Weyburn, and their children: Marty (Bernice) Thompson, Marlin (Jeannette) Thompson, Kenny (Karen) Thompson, Cary Thompson and five great grandchildren; Betty Ann (Joe) Herlick of Tribune, and their children: Ron (Deb) Herlick, Lorrie (Doug) Ashworth, Donna (Bill) Axten, Don (Donalda) Herlick, Dianne Herlick, Darcy Herlick and 13 great grandchildren; one brother, Roy (Annie) Ellingson of Estevan; one sister, Alma Lindgen of Estevan; two half sisters: Bernice and Florence; one half brother, Allan Waddle; as well as many nieces and nephews. Ruth was born August 26, 1915 northeast of Tribune on the family farm. Her mother died in 1918 giving birth to twins. She then went to Kramer, North Dakota to live with her uncle and aunt. After a short while she came back to Saskatchewan and was adopted by Mary and Elling Ellingson at an early age. Her adopted family consisted of two brothers, Joseph and Edwin. She took her schooling at Temple school, walking to and from school most of the time but occasionally she would catch a ride with the Douds on their buggy. At home she was a real chore girl, hauling grain and hay, milking cows and caring for other livestock. She went to work for Harry and Alma Hunstad where she met Leroy. They were married on November 13, 1936 and together they worked for several different farmers. In 1937 they moved to the Carlson farm where they lived and worked very hard for years. Never did you see one without the other. Ruth always had a fresh baked cake for all birthdays and was always ready to lend a helping hand whenever needed. Her winters were spent quilting, making several from her own design. Company was always frequent at the farm and they never left unfed. A meal was hussled up in no time and there was always enough for extras. The coffee pot was always on and everyone knew it. Ladies Aid was always special and the Emmanuel church yard was high on her volunteer list, so it was always kept trim. Ruth loved gardening and any outdoor work, but once the grandchildren came along, they became a priority. She kept track of anything that went on in the community, like weddings, funerals, birthdays and anniversaries. Her health started failing and this required a move to town. In October 1996, Ruth was moved to Souris Valley Extended Care Centre where she was content and comfortable. Funeral service was held Friday, March 12 at 2:00 p.m. from Lake Alma Lutheran Church, with Pastor Martin Olson officiating. Interment followed in Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Maxim, SK. All those in attendance were considered to be honorary pallbearers. The active pallbearers were her eight grandsons: Curtis Hunstad, Marty Thompson, Marlin Thompson, Kenny Thompson, Cary Thompson, Ron Herlick, Don Herlick and Darcy Herlick. Francis "Frank" Xavier Dufour
It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Francis "Frank" Xavier Dufour, on Wednesday, March 10, 1999 at Weyburn General Hospital, Weyburn. Predeceased by his father and mother, Walter and Kathleen Dufour. Frank leaves to mourn his loving wife, Patricia Dufour of Weyburn, and his children: Dr. Don (Bernie) Dufour of Weyburn, and their children: Laura (Jason) Hudson, Debra, Sarah, Anita and Frances; Paul (Pattie) Dufour of Winnipeg and their children: Dennis, James and Danielle; Sandra (Mike) Forsythe of Winnipeg and their children: Rachelle, Ryan and Jennifer; his brothers and sisters: Edward (Searle) Dufour of Regina; Lorena Tuepah of Regina; Bernice Dunsmoor of Calgary; Larry (Helen) Dufour of Saskatoon; and Joseph (Marg) Dufour of Regina Beach; as well as many nieces and nephews. Frank was born to Walter and Kathleen Dufour in Stenen, SK on July 29, 1925. He lived briefly in Fife Lake, then moved to Regina in 1938. He received his education at the Holy Rosary School in Regina, then on to Campion College. In WW II Frank served in the R.C.N.V.R. He was a salesman for Dufour Wilson Motors and was employed by the Province of Saskatchewan with Weights and Measures. On June 11, 1949 Frank married Patricia Shevon at the Holy Rosary Cathedral in Regina. In 1952 Frank and Pat moved to Weyburn where Frank operated a Texaco Bulk Station for 30 years then owned and operated Four Corner Tire Service. Frank was very involved in community service. He was the president of the Young Fellows Club, served on the separate school boards - charter member, United Appeal executive, Toastmasters Club and Lions Club, member of the Rotary and Elks. Frank was alderman for seven years for the City of Weyburn. He was president of the Royal Canadian Legion until 1979, secretary manager of Weyburn Branch #47 for five years, Zone Commander for six years. Frank's involvement in the St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church included Grand Knight in 1959, 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus and Faithful Navigator of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. His hobbies were boating, snowmobiling and walking. Prayers were said Friday, March 12 at 8:00 p.m. from St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Weyburn. The funeral mass was held Saturday, March 13 at 10:30 a.m. from St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church with Father Francis Hengen celebrant. Interment followed in Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn. Active pallbearers were Dan Dufour, Dennis Dufour, James Dufour, Dr. Warren Dufour, Geoff Dufour and Terry Tuepah. The Knights of Columbus formed an honor guard and members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #47 held a Last Post Service.
