Doug Findlay
DOUG FINDLAY September 18, 1913 - December 12, 2001 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Doug Findlay, predeceased by his wife Mac in 1987. Left to remember him are his daughter Gail (Arne) Doucette and his son David (Pat) Findlay, as well as numerous grand-children, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Dad spent his working years in Winnipeg, later enjoying his retirement years at the lake (Kenora) and winters in Florida. He could often been seen quietly reading a book or working on some project at the lake. He took pride in his carpentry skills and the work he did. Dad was also a loyal and active member of the Elks Lodge in Kenora for a number of years, and served as Master of the Masonic Dormer Lodge. Dad's sense of humour grew as the years passed as he enjoyed gatherings with his family. Dad's unassuming strength provided us with support in our endeavours. He will be sadly missed. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Concordia Place for their kindness and excellent care. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. Friends may call to pay their respects Thursday evening (tonight) between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at the Transcona Funeral Chapel, 1800 Day Street. Left to enjoy wonderful memories are his wife Helen; son Robert; daughter Nikol Wendy and his granddaughter Mickenzie; brother Norman and his wife Donna; many nieces and nephews, especially Norma and Sharon who were filled with love for their uncle "Harvey" and many close friends. Roy was a William Avenue boy, brought up with a barn in the backyard and teams of his dad's horses. Roy started to work in the fish sheds when trains of fish would go to Chicago and New York. This was when he met the love of his life, Helen. Roy would phone in the order to the C.P.R. telegraphs, Helen was a phone operator. They were married in 1961 in Winnipeg. Roy's next venture was the moving industry. Roy and two friends became partners in Portage Cartage & Storage. How proud Roy was, along with Victor, John and Beven, as it grew and became successful. What comical memories of the three being "jack of all trades" as they booked, packed and moved the furniture themselves. Family was so important to Roy. The joining of older members of the family to his beloved son and daughter around the table at holiday times were fun times. Roy was member of Ancient Landmark Lodge # 3 A.F.& A.M., Prince Rupert Chapter, R.A.M. #1 and the Khartum Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S. In the spring of 2000, Roy was given the honor of receiving a medal for 50 years as a Mason. Roy and Helen loved to travel and were happiest when planning a trip. The white caddy took them to sunny places. Then they became family members of McPhail Travel who Barbara and Muriel guided them through the wonders of Australia. Roy would advise people to travel now not wait till they retired. Travelling with the Flag Patrol brought more memories with trips to Hawaii, Mexico but most of all, to the Icelandic Festivals at Gimli. To the angels of 3E at Riverview, the family give heartfelt thanks for their compassionate care. They sang, danced, told him funny stories and gave him such loving care. As they entered the room he always had a broad smile and "how are you". You will always have a special place in our hearts. Our thanks also for their concern over Helen. Hubert Mayes
HUBERT GRAHAM MAYES (BERT) Bert passed away peacefully at the age of 74 on Monday, December 10, 2001, at St. Boniface Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents, Ralph and Jean Mayes, and his dear brother Carlyle. He is survived by his beloved wife Gerry; children, Valerie (Gary), Alison (Stephen) and Brian (Alison); and cherished grandchildren, Nicole, Andrea and Graham. He is also survived by his sisters, Ardyce (Korky) Koroluk and Marian (late Martin) Balint, as well as cousins, nieces and nephews. Bert was born
in Deloraine and never lost touch with his rural Manitoba roots. He always enjoyed trips to the country, especially in his retirement years when he presented Centennial Farm plaques on behalf of the Manitoba Historical Society. Bert was a distinguished graduate of United College, now University of Winnipeg (B.A.), University of Manitoba (M.A.) and Laval University (Ph.D.). After teaching high school briefly, he worked as a CBC Radio announcer and producer for eight years. He then returned to the University of Winnipeg, where he was a dedicated and respected Professor of French for 25 years. His life-long passion for French language and culture was reflected in his 17 trips to France and his keen interest in the Franco-Manitoban community. History was another of Bert's loves. He enjoyed researching and writing historical articles, many of which were published in The Beaver magazine. His article about Lord Selkirk's grave helped to bring about its restoration, and in 1978 he was honoured to represent Manitoba at a ceremony rededicating the grave in Orthez, France. Bert's care and patience as a photographer produced many sets of beautiful travel slides, which he enjoyed showing to friends, students and seniors' groups. Bert's retirement years were very happy - trips to Europe with Gerry, family visits, coffee chats with old CBC friends, and making music as a fiddler in the band Scotch Measure, which accompanies the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society. In the last seven years of his life, he amazed and impressed us all by becoming an accomplished violin maker. In 1997, Bert was honoured to be made a Fellow of United College. He was a true gentleman, a learned person of great integrity and humility. He was devoted to his wife and family, loved his home, his garden, music and conversation. He bore his final illnesses with great dignity. He will be sadly missed by all those who knew him. The family wishes to thank Bert's endlessly supportive "brother", Lorne Wallace, and dear friends, Adam and Rena Laird. Heartfelt thanks to the wonderful, caring staff of the Palliative Care and Peritoneal Dialysis units of the St. Boniface Hospital. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 16 at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., (south of the Royal Canadian Mint).
