Dauk, Mary,
Dated: 12/09/2003
Regina, SK
DAUK - Sister Mary Verda (Frances Mary Dauk), born at Annaheim, Saskatchewan November 17, 1907, died in Regina on December 7, 2003. Sister was one of eleven children born to Frank Dauk and Elizabeth Scharback who immigrated to Canada from Mankato, Minnesota just before Frances was born. Frances (Fanny) attended Laurier Public School in Annaheim, the Ursuline Convent in Bruno, Saskatchewan and Sacred Heart College in Regina before joining the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions in 1931. Most of Sister's life was spent in teaching, 22 years in Regina, 7 in Wolseley, Saskatchewan, 7 in Brandon, Manitoba and 1 in Fort Frances, Ontario. For most of the time from 1952 until her retirement from teaching in 1972 Sister was also School Principal. In her "spare time" Sister Mary Verda was a tireless volunteer, training altar servers, Brownies and Girl Guides, running Red Cross activities, teaching catechism in the country during school holidays, and visiting the sick and the families of her students. Retirement from teaching freed her for pastoral work in Wolseley and two other missions; choir work, interfaith groups, teaching English to refugees, preparing parcels of clothing for the missions, and producing handicrafts for gifts and bazaars were among her other occupations. In all this activity the most important part of Sister's life was deepening her relationship with God, followed closely by her love for her family, who in turn showered her with affection, and by her loyalty to her religious congregation. In 1999 Sister moved into the "Sisters' Residence" at Santa Maria and there continued her life of cheerful generosity, visiting the patients upstairs, praying for the dying, and maintaining a large correspondence. One could scarcely believe the extent of this woman's activities even into the last month of her long life. Sister Verda was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Mary Doepker, Magdalena, Rose, Adelheid (Sister Aloysia, O.S.U) and Margaret (Sister Mary Mathilde, RNDM), and her brothers, Alois, Joseph, William, and Frank. Left to mourn her loss are her brother Anthony of Swift Current, numerous nieces and nephews and their children, and the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions. Prayers will be held on Tuesday, December 10 at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Santa Maria Senior Citizens Home, 4215 Regina Avenue. Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, December 11 at 10a.m. at Holy Rosary Cathedral. Friends who so wish may make a memorial donation to the Mission Fund of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions, 800 Adele Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0K6. Arrangements in care of Speers Funeral Chapel and Crematorium Services.
