GRAY - James Douglas James Douglas (Doug) Gray passed away peacefully at home, December 6, 2003 at the age of 85 years. The eldest child of Ruth and Leonard, Doug was born on the family ranch at Cabin Lake, Alberta on August 12, 1918. He is survived by Ardis, his loving wife of fifty-nine years; twin daughters, Jane Hantos (Zoltan) of Vancouver and Judy Gray (Bob Mah) of Calgary; and one adoring granddaughter Joanna Hantos, also of Vancouver. He additionally leaves to mourn his loss, sister Mabel Rooke (Bill) and brother David (Verda) as well as an extended family of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents as well as two sisters, Jean and Marjorie. Doug's early years were spent on the ranch. Following their marriage in 1944, Doug and Ardis relocated to Toronto where he attended the Radio College of Canada. A return to Alberta in 1948 saw Doug assume employment with Canadian Exploration Company. The nomadic lifestyle of the seismic industry suited Doug to a "t", but in 1950 reality struck with the arrival of twin daughters! The family settled briefly in Hanna and then moved to Calgary. Work in the electronics field was stimulating to Doug and the Calgary experience proved rich in friendships and fine times. The next leg of the journey represented a move to Edmonton with Doug's new career at NAIT. A sabbatical leave to the U of A earned Doug his education certificate and upon its completion he assumed administrative opportunities as Department Head of Food Services. Retirement in 1981 had Doug and Ardis "on the road again" ... this time to a decade of wonderful, warm winters in Arizona. In 1988 they re-established their current permanent residence in Calgary. A well-read intellectual, Doug possessed an acerbic wit and an appreciation for the "finer things in life". In the mid 1950's while living in Hanna, Doug joined the Fraternal Order of Masons, and at the time of his move to Calgary, also became a Shriner. He was deeply committed to the philanthropic work of the Shrine, as well as a true believer in higher education. He will be sorely missed by all. In Doug's memory the family welcomes donations to the Shriner's Hospital for Children, 1529 Cedar Avenue, Montreal, Quebec H3G 1A6 or floral tributes. A gathering in honour of Doug's life is planned for Sunday, December 14, 2003 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Edgemont Room of the Best Western Village Park Inn, 1804 Crowchild Trail N.W., Calgary. HUGHES - James Hughes Sr. James Hughes Sr., has lived a century, and passed away December 9, 2003 as a result of the effects of old age and a life well-lived. As was often the case, he was surrounded by family. James Allen Hughes was born at the Wintercott farm near Leominister, Herefordshire, England, September 13, 1903, the eldest son of Allen E. and Lizzie Hughes. His family raised purebred Herefords that originated from a purebred herd founded by his great-uncle in 1845. Some documentation indicates the family was in the cattle business as early as 1761. In 1928, seeking greater opportunity and good cattle country, Jim took advantage of the CPR immigration program, and landed in Alberta, working for a short time at Crossfield before coming to the High River area. In 1930 he was joined by his brother Tom. In 1932, Jim and Tom bought a purebred Hereford herd and a property on Pekisko Creek, with a down payment and ten years to pay the balance to Sam Mace. They showed their cattle from Calgary to Montana to Toronto, bringing home several Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion ribbons. Jim and Tom were joined by their sister Nancy in 1931, and their mother in 1936. The 1930's was a tough time for nearly everyone on the prairies, but they made it through with the determination and creativity characteristic of their generation. In 1936, they could not make their payments, so Mr. Mace lived with them for the year. In 1939 Jim married Mary Gardner, member of a pioneer family from Pekisko, and they continued to live at the Mace place until they moved to the Hanson place, known as Chinook Ranch in 1953. In 1950, Jim had focussed on building a commercial herd, and sold his purebred herd. Located four miles southwest of Longview, he bought the ranch and some adjacent range from the old Bar U Ranch because it is where chinooks often come earlier and clear the fescue covered hills of snow for easier grazing. Cattle, and to be specific, Hereford cattle, were a prime interest in Jim's whole life. The spring bull sales and fall calf sales became a much anticipated social outing to visit with friends from throughout the cattle industry. He also always enjoyed the occasional political discussion. In 1984, Jim proudly received an award from the Alberta Hereford Association as an Outstanding Commercial Hereford Breeder. Jim enjoyed and was dedicated to his family. He and Mary raised six children, Jim (Barbara) of Longview, Bob (Mary) of Calgary, Don (Margaret) of Courtenay, BC, Charlie (Muriel) of Longview, Irene Leeds (Doug) of Claresholm, and Ken (Denise) of Springbank. He was the patriarch of an expanding family that extends to twenty grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Jim and Mary were fortunate to be able to live on the ranch until four years ago. Over the years Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening, and taking his friends and guests across the foothills to share his good fortune of being able to live and raise cattle in some of the best cattle country in the world. Jim's ambitions included building a life and a good reputation in a new land, raising a family, enjoying life, raising good cattle, always paying his bills, and living to be 100. He did all that and more, and he did it well. The family is particularly grateful to the caring team at the High River Hospital and Nursing Home, and encourage donations in lieu of flowers to support programs at the nursing home (High River Hospital Foundation, for Second Floor, 560 - 9 Avenue West, High River, T1V 1B3). They made a great contribution to Jim's quality of life over the past few years. Jim possessed the gift to be able to tell and enjoy good stories. The family invites friends and neighbours to join in a celebration of his life on Saturday, December 13 at 2:00 p.m. at the SNODGRASS FUNERAL CHAPEL in High River, followed by a reception where we can all share a few good stories.
